It's a certified Best Seat Tradition now to have Alex's group of straw hat buddies join him over the holidays to talk about Eiichiro Oda's legendary anime series ONE PIECE, at 1123 episodes released at the time of recording with still more content on the way. We've got Katy, Lony, Owen, and newcomer Ayana joining Alex today, and even though the series is on a minor hiatus mid-Egghead arc, the gang is chomping at the bit to see Luffy and co. enter Elbaph, home of the giants, starting April 2025. Ayana introduces their own personal One Piece lore with their favorite characters and moments, and then the gang jumps into a discussion about the Five Elders, expected hype on Elbaph (introduced all the way back in the Little Garden arc!), and we even get a psuedo-Theory Wall to close out the episode—are people gonna die? why are we talking about Loki? Loki's in ONE PIECE? As the nameless author of these blurbs it's mighty confusing. Content warning: SPOILERS, strong language.

Discussion Points for One Piece 1126 (Spoilers!): Are we officially at Elbaf? Is the lego house a kid giant's toy house? Why is the missing crew the first six members, A.K.A the Alabasta crew? Is there any significance with that and Vivi possibly reuniting with the Straw Hats soon? Did Kuzan really intend to kill Garp? Why are we getting a flashback to a month ago with Bartolomeo and Shanks? Extra Credits: Our intro music is a remix version of “Overtaken” from the One Piece anime, cut together by Jon Negroni. Jon still thinks Elbaf won't happen so easily...is he right? Will we see the Cross Guild and/or the man marked by flames soon? We now have some confirmations about the Gorosei and how old they must really be...does it change anything? How satisfying was Saturn's [REDACTED]? This week on the show, Jon Negroni and Travis Hymas discuss the latest chapter of the One Piece manga, titled “Time is Right,” and let's be fair. When is the time ever wrong to talk about One Piece? One Piece 1122 is currently available to read for free on Viz. We want your feedback! If you have any questions, corrections, or your own theories and speculation, you can either email us (rookiepirateradio@gmail.com) or join our Discord, where we have a special channel devoted to all things One Piece spoilers! Discussion Points for One Piece 1122 (Spoilers!): Are you feeling nostalgic about the My Hero Academia tribute on the cover? Will Koby come around on trying to "stop" Luffy from claiming the One Piece? What can we confirm about Joy Boy from that silhouette?? Do we now have a better idea of how the Gorosei summoning works and what their weakness is? How does tying haki into a knot connect to Weatheria? After Elbaf, could be possibly get a God Valley part two, in which the four emperors all clash on the same island? Will Blackbeard go to Fishman Island and/or Wano to get the Ancient Weapons per Caribou's tip, or will he focus on the last road poneglyph first? Why does Emmet look sort of like a viking/giant in the flashback? Is Egghead Island the best arc post-timeskip? What will it take for Luffy to master conqueror's haki the same way Joy Boy apparently did? This week on the show, Jon Negroni and Travis Hymas discuss the latest chapter of the One Piece manga, titled “The Upheaval of the Era,” and the last thing we want to do now is throw up or heave after reading what Oda has in store for the final saga! If you have any questions, corrections, or your own theories and speculation, you can either email us (rookiepirateradio@gmail.com) or join our Discord, where we have a special channel devoted to all things One Piece spoilers! Discussion Points for One Piece 1121 (Spoilers!): Ok, so where is the final road poneglyph? Probably not Elbaf, so what about Vira? Is the Man Marked by Flames Deuce's or Shanks' theoretical evil holy knight twin? Who has which road poneglyphs at this point? Will the Cross Guild go after Luffy while Shanks goes after Blackbeard? Will Zoro's next major opponent be Mihawk? What if Sabo/Dragon and the various marines like Koby and Akainu will be more like kingmakers, while the four emperors will be the true contenders for the one piece? Could there be a Marine King?? One Piece 1120 is here, and we're ready to talk about it on Rookie Pirate Radio, a podcast dedicated to the world of anime and manga. This week, Jon Negroni (me) and Travis Hymas discuss the latest chapter of the One Piece manga, titled “Atlas,” a character we end up only barely talking about because the Will of D is just too dang mysterious. Discussion Points for One Piece 1120 (Spoilers!): Is Edison really dead? Will Lilith join the Straw Hats? Emet is a funny character?! Could Toki have sent Emet (and Joyboy) forward into the future? What is Emet's "it" ? Why would the World Government hunt down people with "D" in their names 26 years ago, but not as much now? Why didn't the Gorosei move the One Piece after Roger found it? Or did they? Extra Credits: Our intro music is a remix version of “Overtaken” from the One Piece anime, cut together by Jon Negroni. Our podcast artwork is by Jon Negroni. This week, Jon Negroni and Travis Hymas discuss the latest chapter of the One Piece manga, titled “Stalemate.” Though based on that stellar color spread, maybe it should be called Checkmate...One Piece 1113 is currently available to read for free on Viz. We want your feedback! If you have any questions, corrections, or your own theories and speculation, please leave us a comment below. You can also email us (rookipirateradio@gmail.com) or join our Discord! We'll be back to discuss One Piece 1114 after it comes out, but in the meantime, be sure to subscribe to Rookie Pirate Radio on your favorite podcast app, so you can stay up to date on all our releases. Discussion Points for One Piece 1113 (Spoilers!): We were right about Vegapunk's brain! Good job, us. Vegapunk is a centrist fence-sitter and that's that. Saturn and Robin and tension. One Piece is an adaptation of Titanic?! The prophecy of Luffy destroying Fishman Island continues to look bright. A worldwide flood, ancient weapons, and artificial clouds... Fishman Island's exclusion from the broadcast might be intentional. The world will probably assume Luffy killed Vegapunk which would be major. Luffy's dream of becoming the Pirate King could represent his desire to be the last pirate and create a world that doesn't need pirates anymore. Luffy's ideology as a pirate is unique and deeply ingrained in his character. Each member of the Straw Hat Pirates has a unique dream that contributes to his dream. We need to know how injured Robin really is. Understanding different perspectives can help avoid misunderstandings and conflicts with Sanji's behavior toward women evolving over the course of the story. The theory of the ancient kingdom being Impel Down is interesting. Climate change and increasing marine presence can be forms of enforcement The concept of a floating island or a kingdom of pirates that can move around is fascinating and adds depth to the One Piece world. Everyone's theories about the world of One Piece are about to be put to the test. Moving islands? Floating islands? The ancient kingdom and the Void Century are of course connected to the mystery behind the Poneglyphs, but also the weird navigation an other climate events that might be key to finding Laugh Tale. Momo may already have a general idea of the world sinking and that is why he wanted to wait to open the borders of Wano. The theory of a big party where all the islands are connected is...nice. The rising ocean tides could have led to the creation of islands and underwater places. And the sky islands and the ancient kingdom could have been methods of escaping the growing ocean waters. The weapons, such as Pluton and Uranus, may have had the power to drain the world or separate the islands. The possibility of Kuzan joining Blackbeard's crew as a mole is discussed We question the logic behind Kuzan leaving the Marines if he is a valuable asset Leaving a rating on Apple Podcasts helps support the podcast and provides valuable feedback. On this special episode of The One Piece Podcast, we celebrate the life and legacy of the author, artist, character designer and mangaka Akira Toriyama. We speak about his immense legacy — from the one-shots featured in Akira Toriyama's Manga Theater, to Dr. Slump, to Dragon Ball, to Dragon Quest to Sandland and beyond. We discuss his relationship to each of our lives, his relationship with Eiichiro Oda, and the legacy he leaves behind. 0:00:00 Akira Toriyama 1:16:08 Voice Messages & Outro We want to extend our deepest condolences to Toriyama-sensei's family and friends. May he rest in peace. It's just too soon. The hole that he's left is just too big.A wave of sadness washes over me at the thought that I'll never see him again. I idolized him from childhood, and I still remember the day he first called me by my name. I fondly recall positively jumping for joy with Kishimoto-san on the way home the day he first used the word “friends” to describe us. I also remember the last conversation we ever had.He was one of those who was passed the baton in an era where it was thought you'd rot your brain if you read comics, and created an era where children and adults alike could enjoy reading them. So, this is what you can do with comics. So you can get into that world. That's the dream he gave us. It was like watching a hero bravely charging ahead.I think the excitement and the emotion at the time of Dragon Ball‘s original serialization must have really taken root in not just cartoonists, but also creators active in all sorts of industries, when they were young boys. His presence was like a great, sheltering tree. For the cartoonists of our generation, who got to stand on the same stage, the closer we got to the Toriyama oeuvre, the more we became aware of just how large that presence was. To a frightening degree. But even so, it was simply a pleasure to get to meet the carefree man himself. After all, our love for Toriyama-sensei is in our very blood. With respect and gratitude for the world filled with creativity that Toriyama-sensei left us, I express my sincere condolences. Rest in peace.May Heaven be the kind of joyful world you envisioned, Sensei.Eiichiro Oda Music: Shunsuke Kikuchi Source: https://www.kanzenshuu.com/2024/03/08/akira-toriyama-passes-away/
One Piece 1109 is here, and we're ready to talk about it on Rookie Pirate Radio, a podcast dedicated to the world of anime and manga. This week, Jon Negroni (me) and Travis Hymas discuss the latest chapter of the One Piece manga, titled “Interception.” But you don't have to wait 10 whole minutes to start listening because the episode is out right now! One Piece 1109 is currently available to read for free on Viz. We want your feedback! If you have any questions, corrections, or your own theories and speculation, you can email us (rookipirateradio@gmail.com) and/or join our Discord! Discussion Points (Spoilers!): The new cover story! Looks like it'll focus on Wano/Onigashima and tie up loose ends from the previous arc. Vegapunk's message about the "truth of the world" is delayed (10 minutes or 10 CHAPTERS?!) Luffy's attacks are ineffective against Saturn, indicating a potential power resistance or familiarity with Nika. Kizaru's seems down for the count and his fate is uncertain, so Jon theorizes he may join the Cross Guild. Vegapunk's upcoming speech indicates that this may be his last hurrah in the story. The cover story suggests a connection between giants and Wano, adding to the world-building of the arc. The skull/sword of Onigashima raises questions about the history and origins of the island and Kaidou's Oni race. The artwork and dynamic action scenes in the chapter are a real high point since Oda's eye surgery. We speculate on the communication abilities of the five elders and Jon theorizes Luffy's potential battle with them could lead to his possible capture and being summoned to Marijoa by Imu. Extra Credits Our intro music is a remix version of “Overtaken” from the One Piece anime, cut together by Jon Negroni. Our podcast artwork is by Jon Negroni. One Piece 1108 is here, and we're ready to talk about it on Rookie Pirate Radio, a podcast dedicated to the world of anime and manga. This week, Jon Negroni (me) and Travis Hymas discuss the latest chapter of the One Piece manga, titled “Come In, World." So you should come on in and listen along as we reveal the truth of this podcast. One Piece 1108 is currently available to read for free on Viz. We want your feedback! If you have any questions, corrections, or your own theories and speculation, you can email us (rookipirateradio@gmail.com) and/or join our Discord! Discussion Points: The color spread featuring Reiju and Tashigi is a little early for Pride Month. Caribou successfully persuades Van Augur and Catarina Devon to take him to Blackbeard, potentially revealing crucial information about Shirahoshi/Poseidon and Pluton. The battle between the navy and Bonney-controlled pacifistas escalates, leading to the vice admirals' decision to eliminate Bonney. Giant Luffy confronts Kizaru while Vegapunk's message beams out of the island, teasing the revelation of the truth of the world. This upcoming, highly-anticipated revelation in One Piece is could have a seriously significant impact on the story. The Giants, Elbaf, and/or Buccaneers may play a crucial role in what Vegapunk reveals next. Are we about to get another flashback and/or return to Wano and Fishman Island? Bonney joining the Straw Hats feels inevitable at this point, supported by Vegapunk's dying wish and the huge threat she faces. Extra Credits Our intro music is a remix version of “Overtaken” from the One Piece anime, cut together by Jon Negroni. Our podcast artwork is by Jon Negroni. Animator KDA gets attacked on Twitter/X over a scene he animated for One Piece. Why? The bathhouse scene featured Jewelry Bonney, a character from the series who is canonically 12 but can change her age to look like she's in her 20s. ➡️ Tip Jar and Fan Support: http://ClownfishSupport.com ➡️ Official Merch Store: http://ShopClownfish.com ➡️ Official Website: http://ClownfishTV.com Additional Context: An animator for the anime "One Piece" faced backlash on social media for their depiction of the character Jewelry Bonney in a bath scene in episode 1090. The controversy stems from Bonney's abilities, derived from the Toshi Toshi no Mi (Age-Age Fruit), which allow her to change her age. While she appears as a woman in her early 20s, she is canonically only 12 years old. This led to criticisms and harassment of the animator, as some fans felt that the scene sexualized a minor character, despite the character's adult appearance being a result of her powers. The animator, known as KDA on social media, received a range of negative comments, with some people accusing them of sexualizing a child. However, many fans defended the animator, pointing out that they were simply following the character design and direction set by "One Piece" creator Eiichiro Oda. The animator responded to the controversy by stating that they were unaware of Bonney's actual age while working on the episode and apologized for any misunderstanding, but not for how Bonney was depicted. This incident highlights the complexity of depicting characters in anime who can transform their bodies and ages, as well as the challenges animators face in interpreting such characters. It also reflects the growing concern over the harassment of artists and animators by online communities over their work. Join the crew as we brave the seas of Netflixs' Live Action One Piece and give our thoughts on the adaptation of the famous manga by Eiichiro Oda!
One Piece is one of the biggest franchises in the world. The manga and anime have broken records in sales and viewership. The live action adaptation on Netflix was a hit. And the series holds a special place among fans who feel like they're part of the Straw Hat pirate crew. But it may be the tragic backstories of the characters which tie it all together. I talk with co-host of the One Piece podcast Shannon Strucci, YouTuber Jordan Silva, artist Steve Yurko and Crunchyroll writer Daniel Dockery about how One Piece's creator Eiichiro Oda is able to combine zany humor with emotional gut punches, and why so many fans identify with aspects of the characters' backstories, even when the storylines are completely fantastical.
