Getting BIBLACHOL

Thanksgiving is upon us yet again folks! Usually thought of as a simply secular holiday to be enjoyed by Americans regardless of faith, however I thought I'd dive into a bit of a history of the holiday and discuss my own crackpot theory: Was Thanksgiving a Jewish Holiday?? We also eat some Haagen-Dazs Spirit flavored Ice Cream - of course I grabbed the Bourbon flavored one! It's really great stuff, and you might want to grab a pint before having to see your in-laws for the big meal! Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Today we introduce the character of Joshua! Looking at Numbers 13, Joshua was in the group of spies that Moses hand picked to go into Canaan and spy out their promised land. On their spy mission they found that the land was pretty awesome, with one major drawback: Canaan was inhabited by giants!!  We also drink a very smooth and mellow blended Irish whiskey called The Quiet Man! Cheers! 

Today we drop a special episode here on the one year anniversary of the passing of an legend that has impacted countless lives around the world. Of course we're talking about none other than Stan Lee! Stan is really the only celebrity death that has ever had an impact on me personally, and the one year anniversary of his passing has left me missing him. So, in a slightly therapeutic episode which is both fairly sober and somber, we talk about some aspects of his life, including his Jewish upbringing and my own hot take on how the Judeo-Christian Bible is the great grandfather of all western comic books! Rest in Peace Stan! We miss you! #Loveyou3000

In celebration of the spooky season we take a look at my favorite stories involving Zombies in the Bible! Technically not actual walking dead shambling hoard type zombies, but people who died and were raised from the dead! Coming back to life - even if no brains are being eaten is still pretty neat! On today's episode (which just so happens to be our most buzzed recording yet) we discuss the story of Jonah! One of the most popular stories in the Bible, Jonah gets a book named after him even though he's actually a massive jerk! Seriously, this guy is NOT a role model! Storms of the century, giant fish, and magic vines all abound in the story of Jonah! To tie in with the episode we snag a bottle of budget rum from our local Total Wine called Jonah's Curse Black Spiced Rum which turned out to be a sleeper hit! 

On today's episode we do our best to speed run through all of the book of Leviticus and some of Numbers quickly touching on such topics as building the Tabernacle, what to do with poop from animal sacrifices, incest porn, and finally finish with a story about Moses and his sister's accidentally showing her racism against his interracial marriage!  We also try, for my very first time, Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey! It combines two of my favorite things into one bottle, sounds weird, but it's pretty great! 10/10 would recommend!

Getting Biblachol is back! We took a bit of a hiatus over the summer, but we're starting fresh now for the next year! In today's episode we used Google autocomplete to find out the internet's most searched about Bible questions! Port, tattoos, and rolling joints are just some of the topics we cover! We also #TOASTtheTREES with Angel's Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey for National Bourbon Heritage month, and discuss how bourbon is different than other types of whiskeys! Cheers!  

In today's episode we cover the epic story of Moses receiving the 10 commandments found from Exodus chapter 18 all the way through chapter 34! Most people know the general story of the 10 commandments, but often don't realize all that's left out normally. The full story has a massive rager, people dying, righteous indignation, and Moses being caught up in God's version of "you break it, you buy it" policy. We also drink and give thoughts on Legacy brand Canadian small batch whiskey!

In today's episode we see catch up with Moses and the Israelites from Exodus 15-17 in the wilderness where God magically delivers them clean drinking water, and sustenance by causing Chick-Fil-A and Panera Bread to fall from the sky! Also they get into their first full fledged war after being freed from slavery for, like, 37 minutes. It's a quick but packed episode as we set the stage for future stories of Moses!    

On today's episode we dive into the traditions surrounding Easter Sunday from some kinky pagan fertility roots, to modern day chocolate overloads while sipping one of our favorite day drinking beers perfect for sitting outside watching kids hunt for plastic eggs! 

In today's episode we revisit the story of Moses freeing the Hebrew people from Egyptian slavery and delve deeper into the magic walking stick turned snake Pokemon battle, and discuss the fascinating theories of how the plagues were direct attacks on so many of the ancient Egyptian's animal headed deities!  We also drink not 1, but 2 bottles (not the whole bottles!) of value scotch whiskey from Costco!

On this very special episode of Getting Biblachol, we have our first ever guest on the show as we play our quote game "Is it Game of Thrones or the Bible" and do a silly exercise on comparing the major houses of Westeros and the 12 tribes of Israel, and then we top things off with a little discussion comparing John Snow and Jesus.  We also drink a couple different versions of the Ommegang brand Game of Thrones beers!

In today's episode we cover the story of Esther! One of only two women to get a book of the Bible named after them, Esther goes from winning the ancient Persian version of The Bachelor to saving her entire people from certain genocide! She even has a whole Jewish holiday surrounding her story! And we also drink a Bordeaux wine that is particularly hard to google!  

In today's episode we continue on with the story of Moses covering Exodus chapters 5-15 as we recount how God inflicted Egypt with plague after plague in order to free the Hebrew people from slavery! Come for the turning of the country's main water source into blood, and stay for the skin boils and pestilence! We also break down my own favorite Bloody Mary recipe as we re-use the previously showcased Moses brand Vodka! Cheers!

In today's episode we go outside the normal realm of what the show is about and decide to celebrate Saint Patrick's day by regaling legendary tales of the man himself as he rids Ireland of snakes and faces off in magic battles with Druids! He may not actually be a Bible story, but arriving on the scene just a few hundred years after Jesus we see some of his feats aren't too far off from those we find in the good book itself. We also drink some Jameson Caskmates Stout edition to further get us in the mood for the holiday! Cheers!

In this week's episode we take a look at what the Bible has to say about Birthday parties! Spoiler alert: two thirds of the time someone DIES! Personally, I'm just happy if someone buys me a beer, but apparently back then your birthday wasn't lit unless someone gets decapitated.  Also, we drink some Kosher for Passover Manischewitz wine which I was very much looking forward to trying since I haven't had it for about 20 years. Let's just say, some memories should stay in the past. Hear all about it in this week's show!

In today's episode we continue with the story of Moses covering Exodus chapters 3 and 4. God decides that Moses is his best bet to free his people from slavery, so he sets a bush on mystical fire and teaches Moses some cool party magic to hopefully scare the Pharaoh into releasing all his free labor workers!  We also revisit Bushmill's Irish Whiskey and try a different version of their mainline product that is aged in bourbon barrels for a different taste: Bushmill's Red Bush!

On today's episode we venture into the book of Exodus to talk about the origin story of one of the most important figures in the Bible! None other than Moses himself! And we also sorta kinda talk about Superman as well. Find out why in today's episode! To go along with the episode we're drinking Moses brand Vodka! A Kosher, sugar cane based Vodka from Finland, and it's pretty great!

Due to some technical difficulties, our today's originally planned episode was not meant to be (yet), so we decided to take this time to give you some updates on the future plans for the show, and also ramble on about random musings like the Colorado jogger who was attacked by a mountain lion, and celebrity religious affiliations!  

On today's episode we finish up the story of Joseph, and how he saves his whole family from starvation all the while getting a little bit of revenge and punking his brothers that wanted to kill him 20 years prior! We also try out some budget scotch whisky in the form of Walmart brand, or rather Sam's Club Member's Mark $20 bottle. Usually cheap booze is horrible and makes you wish for a quick death, so we'll see how this stuff measures up!

Joseph, now sold into slavery finds himself in Egypt and under a new master. He makes the best of a bad situation until his new master’s wife realizes how much of a snack Joseph is! In an premise that’s been replicated in pornos (those not involving pizza delivery boys) for years, will Joseph give into her sexual advances and bang the boss’s wife? Find out the epic conclusion in this week’s episode! Also, I drink some mini "pony" bottles of Corona, called Coronitas which make my hand look huge!

Today we continue on with our journey through the Old Testament. Covering Genesis chapters 37-40 it's a story of favoritism, gaudy clothes, and fratricide!  Also, we drink some Leinenkugel brand Shandy that I got on discount! 

We’re back from our holiday hiatus and ready to get rolling here in 2019! And to tie in with this season of New Year’s resolutions we take a look through the book of Acts in the New Testament to follow the story of Saul of Tarsus as he switches teams and becomes the Apostle Paul - which is one of the best “New Year, New You” stories we’ve ever heard! The demon possession stories are my personal favorites! We also are recovering from overspending during the holidays, so we’re getting the job done today with Aldi store's exclusive wine brand Winking Owl. This budget $3 bottle of Merlot is an amazing deal! Happy 2019!

Today, in honor of the upcoming holiday, we switch things up a bit! No drinking, no paraphrasing, no singing Disney songs badly...just a good old fashioned reading of the Story of Jesus' Birth! We've taken our favorite parts of the accounts of Jesus' birth found in the books of Matthew and Luke to create one cohesive "Getting Biblachol" story time version - don't worry it's a quick episode! Merry Christmas everyone! and on earth, peace and goodwill towards men!  

Today we cover the story of Genesis chapter 34 where Jacob's sons defend their only sister Dinah's honor with some extremely strategic use of...circumcision! Also I drink American Born brand of Bourbon Whiskey! Don't tread on me!  

Today we finish the 20 year long story of Jacob and his brother Esau found in Genesis Chapters 32-36. Join us on the journey as Jacob leaves his life of unfair labor practices with his uncle Laban, and heads towards his brother Esau who had sworn to kill him! It's a tale of family, wrestling mysterious strangers, and a whole bunch of milking camels - whatever those are!

Today we cover Genesis Chapters 28-32 and catch up with Jacob as he's fleeing for his life from his brother Esau's murderous intent! In the safe haven under his uncle Laban's protection, he meets his two female first cousins, one of whom, Rachel is so beautiful he will do anything to be with! In a story that's somehow a cross between The Hangover and something written by Nicholas Sparks, follow through to see if Jacob ends up with the beautiful Rachel! Also, we drink a red wine blend  "Midnight" by wine brand Menage e trois to help get us in the mood for this romantic story!

Today's episode covers Genesis Chapters 25-28 where we tell the story of Isaac's two sons, Esau the hairy masculine hunter, and Jacob the cunning intellectual and their life long feud over inheritance, legacy, and soup! Also, we drink Jim Beam's black cherry flavored bourbon Red Stag to get us in the mood!

In this week’s episode we go through Genesis chapters 18-22 with the story of Abraham and his douchey nephew Lot! The story is both spicy and salty as God rains down armageddon on a horrible rape city, and we meet literally the saltiest person ever! All the while I drink Patron tequila and try to subvert common misconceptions of the liquor by attempting to keep my clothes on!

In today's episode we cover Genesis Chapters 12-17 and take our first look the great grandfather of the Israelite lineage! A tale of circumcision, cuckolding, and prophetic dreams! It's the artist formerly known as Abram's Origin Story!

Halloween is my favorite time of the year, and to help get us into the "spirit" of the season, we pulled together our favorite spookier themed subject matter! From all over the four gospels we cover stories of ghosts, zombies, demon possession, and of course Jesus! We also impulse bought a 6-pack of a Florida brewery, Coppertail, whose trippel style beer named "Unholy" was just too appropriate for the show that we couldn't pass it up! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

In this episode we cover Genesis chapters 5-9 which includes the famous story of Noah's ark which you've heard a thousand times before, but we also cover the less popular story of what happened the first time Noah got drunk AFTER the flood!  Also I cover a new offering from the company that started my love of scotch (the water of life) all those years ago, Glenlivet Founder's Reserve!  

In our 10th show, and first official scheduled episode since we launched, we decided to go back to where it all started! Literally, the creation of the universe! Join us as we review the first 7 days of creation, immortality trees, and more fire swords! We also explore how Adam royally screwed things up for all of us! Super fun stuff! We continue on with the story of Daniel where he continues to rank up the King's corporate ladder by interpreting more dreams, deciphering a phrase written in an illegible celestial language, and committing apparently the worst ancient Babylon white collar felony imaginable: praying in public! We also explore the world of Gin with the newly released Beefeater PINK, a strawberry infused Gin that is as tasty to drink as it is pretty to look at!

As Jerusalem is sieged by Babylon, King Nebuchadnezzer rounds up the most handsome and smartest of the Israelites to be his personal cream of the crop slaves! Among this freshman class of servants are Daniel and his bet buds who routinely outshine everyone else in their class! It's a tale of standing by your convictions, interpreting dreams, and climbing the ranks of job promotions! Also, we divert from our normally whisk(e)y loving ways and delve into some wine! Apothic Inferno is on the menu tonight, a red blend aged in whiskey barrels that create a really smooth finish.

So many of the Bible's stories teach us how to live moral, humble, sin-free lives with guidance like the beatitudes, and other teachings of Jesus. These are NOT those stories. Join in as we go over two back to back stories showcasing individuals doing badass (albeit murdery) things in the name of their people and their freedom. Also listen as I discuss one of my favorite new Irish Whiskeys named Hell-Cat Maggie based on a supposed real life criminal and Dead Rabbits gang member who, as folklore goes, filed her teeth down to fangs and wore sharp metal finger blades for her fights! Exciting stuff!

The children of Israel, who had recently been freed from their slavery in Egypt, were on their 40 year journey to the promised land when they decided to set up camp near the kingdom of Moab. Unfortunately, The Moabite King, Balaak, went all old man and wanted these dang kids to get off his lawn and attempts to hire a wizard Balaam (similar names, no relation!). Follow the adventure as Balaam, in a desperate attempt to get those dolla dolla bills y’all, tries to get God's permission to curse the same people that had already been declared as under his protection! Also listen as I drink Ezra Brooks Bourbon....by mistake! (But it's still pretty good!)

As what happens all too much when drinking, Matt goes on a rant of his Top 5 favorite random verses taken out of context! While these passages aren't big enough to make full stories out of all by themselves, they are incredibly entertaining (or atleast potetinal tattoo ideas), ridiculous, and sometimes poignant.  We would list them all here, but that would literally spoil the whole show! Guess you'll have to listen to see if your favorite verse made the cut!! Also Matt drink's a bottle he's newly discovered! An Irish Whiskey with stellar bottle design and labeling: The Sexton!

Tamar, a Canaanite woman given to marriage into the line of Judah found herself among a people that were not her own. In a series of unfortunate events that started when God killed her husband, and spiraled down from there. Tamar, a badass in her own right, had the resolve, cunning, and tenacity to go after what she thought was rightfully owed her no matter what! Spoiler alert: This allowed her, a non Israelite, to take her place in the lineage of Jesus himself!  Also, I dive deep into the back of my home bar (aka I was running low on stock) and drink some E&J Brandy while discussing the roots of this often neglected spirit!

Continue the story of Samson - The Bible's Superhero!  We start by sipping my favorite daily drinker, Jim Beam Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey! This stuff never gets old to me! You heard his origin story, and how he's not very creative at telling riddles! You heard about his first true love, and something about foxes, but now hear how the story ends!  He isn't the hero the Bible needs, but maybe the hero the Bible deserves... A prophecy told of a baby that would be born to free his people from their oppressors. A promise made that he would be imbued with power given by God himself as long as he strictly adhered to three simple rules! Much like Captain America's super soldier serum, but much more...kosher we get the story of Samson: The Bible's superhero! Join in on part 1 of the story where we explore his birth, get a glimpse of his strength, and ultimately learn how he was really just kind of a jerk!  Also, we drink my go-to bar order drink Johnnie Walker Black Label, but in a special occaision commemorative edition JANE Walker in support of women everywhere!  

It's undeniable that for the past 2000 years the writings known as the Holy Bible have pretty much gone viral the globe over. These were the stories I was raised with, and are as core to my being as Uncle Ben saying "With great power comes great responsibility" or knowing that Superman was sent to earth as a baby to be saved from his dying home planet (which is an origin rooted in a famous Bible story in case you didn't know). It's been shocking to me that more and more people I meet (mostly millenials, and mostly outside the Bible belt) don't have the foundation of these stories that I do, which is a shame because they are amazing! (The stories, not the millenials...just kidding!!) That's where this show comes in! Have you ever wanted to know more about the Bible? Ever wondered about how it all fits together?
