This week on the Missouri Woods & Water Podcast Nate & Micah sit down with Micah's old buddy Jake Morrison and have a great time listening to him tell us the story about his recent red stag hunt in Argentina. Jake's buddy won this hunt at a banquet, so the two friends decided to go without much of an idea of what to expect. Jake decided why not experience something he may never get the chance or have the idea to do ever again, and the memories and stories that come from the trip do not disappoint!! With experiences that were so different from what Jake has experienced hunting for most of his life, this trip will be one he doesn't soon forget. Thanks for listening!!! The owner of New Zealand's largest saw mill said electricity prices are the straw that could break the backs of even more companies as they struggle in already tough economic times. It follows the anouncement that Winstone Pulp international plans to shut down its Tangiwai sawmill and Karioi pulp mill indefinitely, due to skyrocketing power prices; meaning about 200 jobs will go. The Ruapehu Mayor is calling for the Government to provide financial support to the company. However, associate energy minister said right now there's no plan to help manufactuers financially, Red Stag owner Marty Verry speaks to Lisa Owen.

Before 2021 RBO Platinum member Chad Carpenter had never hunted big game. He grew up in Nebraska and hunted a little pheasant but nothing serious. But then, this father of six, was prodded by one of his boys to go deer hunting. He signed up with Rolling Bones and the rest is history. Chad is one of our 2024 Platinum draw winners who chose a free guided hunt in New Zealand where he harvested a 600"+ trophy Red Stag, Arapawa Ram, and Fallow Deer. On this week's Hunt the World podcast from Rolling Bones Outdoors, Brian and Brad recount their adventure hunt in New Zealand - which RBO offers in its hunt catalog. Goodbye, Shopify. See ya later, Etsy. Hasta la vista… Amazon??? Yeah, we said it. Temu has the power to compete with Amazon. Has the Chinese drop shipping company grown too powerful to defeat? Or can our old-school favorites find a way to slay the DTC giant? Nik and Moiz discuss the looming threat of Temu to several major e-commerce retailers. What strategies do they need to stay relevant? Plus, what would it take for Outdoor Voices to crawl out of the grave they dug themselves into? Hear us out— it's definitely not impossible... The guys also discuss the latest acquisition of Asian noodle company, Omsom, by DDC. What, if anything, does it mean for other Asian DTCs like immi, FLY BY Jing, and Sanzo? And later in the episode, Nik declares arbitrage. When is it okay to use arbitrage in the DTC community, and are there any ethical concerns? Well, if we know anything… at the very least, we definitely know where Moiz stands on the issue. We can't escape TikTok Shop, and chances are good neither can you. But is it actually working for the brands that are using it? And what does their AoV look like? Nik also breaks down TikTok Shop's shift to QVC-like ads as the boys debate the latest trends and happenings in TikTok Shop. How much do affiliates get paid anyway? But let's get down to brass tacks—because the guys are wondering whether or not the US government is trying to ban Shein for legitimate reasons or if they're just plain racist against Chinese companies. Sure they might have a case for banning TikTok, but is there any merit to restricting the fast fashion empire from selling products in the US? Is Shein sourcing its raw materials from dubious sources or is it all just a bunch of smoke without fire? Then, Nik and Moiz make the case for why DTC businesses need to start looking outside the US market for sales. Why aren't more brands considering selling in other countries? And how come most marketing agencies aren't interested in bringing brands to other nations? Plus, Moiz unleashes the smartest business idea he's ever had… or the dumbest idea he's ever had. Who can possibly resist the “add two more leggings to your cart—and get the third one free” offer? Nik and Moiz discuss the power of cart promos—what do the best offers look like, and what are the game-changing moves brands are taking to capitalize on cart deals? They dive into the curious case of Halara, and unravel how the influencer-based brand leveraged cart deals, TikTok, and influencers to compete with the likes of Shein and Fashion Nova. Then the guys break down the rise of new DTC brands—what sets companies like Strawberry Milk Mob and Crown Affair apart from their predecessors like Warby Parker and Bonobos? How has the DTC landscape changed so drastically in such a short period of time? Is this the death of huge campaigns and the shift to slow audience validation? And later, Nik wonders whether there's room for companies to start utilizing private label brands more often. Is there a world where a franchising type of mindset can work for DTC? Or has Nik completely lost his mind? Unravel the complexities of fulfillment with Red Stag - a 3PL that guarantees zero shrink, zero mispicks, and zero missed shipments. We're a little later than usual, but Episode 38 of Oh, Deer... presented by Bo's Bar & Stage is here! This one is sponsored by our friends at Red Stag Barbershop, who you've already heard us talk about quite a bit in the last few months. Now, you'll get to hear even more, as owner Clayten Willington joins us for a very candid interview to give us a better look at the history of Red Stag, and some stories we definitely didn't see coming. As Co-Worker Erin put it, it was a "very delicious episode" too, as we got to drink our custom cans of "Oh, Beer" from Red Hart Brewing for the first time, and sampled some incredible pastry and desserts from one of Red Deer's newest hot-spots, Arrae Pâtisserie. And of course, we have our usual other crap to fill the time, including a discussion that every procrastinator can relate to, and every Type-A personality will cringe at... then we wrap things up with a game of 'Gad Mabs" (we changed the name to avoid a lawsuit, but you can do the math there), which, as the title of this episode incinuates, was very difficult. This description was a novel, so we apologize. If you're still interested in listening at this point... enjoy! (Or don't, we're not the boss of you)

Polish up your POG collection because Moiz is still trying to pawn off his slammer at an absurdly high price to anyone gullible enough to buy it. In this week's ep, the guys debate the sustainability of fad businesses. What's the lifespan of the average fad—and is it wise to hop on the bandwagon before it dies out? Nik and Moiz break down the ways to build a sustainable and discuss whether or not brands like Prime Energy and Stanley are poised to fade into oblivion soon. The boys also explore the pain points of distribution in the beverage world and the potential pitfalls of private equity takeovers. Is there any way a brand won't go to shit after a private equity takeover? Does flooding the market with knock-off fad products ever work? Ever dreamed about hunting Red Stags? One of the most coveted, magical, historic Red Stag destinations in the world is the highlands of Scotland. This episode was recorded in the field, in a stone hunting lodge built during the Victorian era, and we tell the story of our good fortune and successful hunt for a big, old royal stag. Head gamekeeper Sam Thompson and Spartan Precision's Rob Gearing sit down with host Joseph von Benedikt and share insights on how to plan and book such a hunt, detail the surprisingly affordable costs, discuss appropriate gear and travel, and most of all, dig deep into hunting methods and stories. HIGHLIGHTS03:45 Joining Red Stag due to a desire to create client value09:51 Be forward-thinking and see through a client-centric lens14:25 What makes a good 3PL partner19:11 A culture that people come first28:39 Do big and bulky if inventory load balance is your expertise QUOTES15:18 Create client value by removing the logistical hassle from customers - Dusty: "I think it really comes down to a mutual alignment of what value creation is. And so what I mean by that is I think a brand has to understand what their core competencies are, and they have to understand the value that they are creating for their customer. And what is debiting that value? So our mission statement as an organization is to do the heavy lifting of e-commerce so our clients can focus on what they do best."26:10 Your core values will enable technical competencies - Dusty: "There are certain core values that are absolute buzz saws. And if you run into that one, it's a buzz saw. You're not gonna make it here if you just don't believe that. So looking for people that are core-value-focused, are people-focused, they understand that what we do is done through the hard work of people, who have a get-stuff-done bias or just GSD, it was get it done, and are client-centric. So it was kind of four big buckets of things that I'm looking for that transcends or enables technical competency." Whew! I finally finished paying off all my Amazon holiday gifts. Guess I'm hooked on eCommerce. Turns out I'm not alone. And I have proof… I just interviewed Dusty Holcomb. He's CEO of fast-growing Red Stag Fulfillment. Based in gorgeous Knoxville, Red Stag is the world-class order fulfillment company designed to unleash scalable growth for eCommerce companies. In short, they do the picking, packing, storage, shipping, and returns for a ton of eCommerce companies (including the ones you used this past holiday) And they've carved out a unique 3PL niche… Red Stag specializes in large, heavy, bulky products. Think expensive inventory, like those high-end office chairs. With 1.1 Million feet of warehouse space in Knoxville & Salt Lake City, clearly Red Stag is onto something ‘big.' They're backed by leading Private Equity firm Mollenhour Gross. Prior to his appointment, Dusty was with AAA for many years. He now leads over 500 full-time employees. I wanted to find out how he's scaling the company that scales other eCommerce companies. In this 20-minute conversation, he reveals how to put a Rockstar in every seat.
The post-protest clean up at Parliament will come with a hefty price tag in more ways than one. Police moved in yesterday to clear out the tent town and its occupants after they say those with good intentions were outnumbered by those willing to use violence. And what started as an anti-mandate, anti-vax demonstration ended with protesters being pepper sprayed and police pelted with paving stones, bricks, paint bombs and tent poles turned javelins. Visitors to the occupation site included Winston Peters and Sir Russell Coutts. And Red Stag chief executive Marty Verry provided some funding to demonstrators. He tells Lisa Owen he's appalled at what he saw on Wednesday.
Police Assistant Commissioner Richard Chambers told Checkpoint the conflict this evening was after protesters had moved a concrete block and police had to put it back. "Obviously we sent some staff into the field to help, but there were no issues." He said the three police who were hit with a stinging substance are doing "really well". "We took them to hospital this morning as a precautionary measure but they're fine now." At this stage they have not made an arrest but are focusing on next steps, he said. It's still not known what the substance was. Chambers would not detail what sort of protest leadership police are talking to, but police negotiators are involved in talking to a group. He said the funding of the protest from people like the Red Stag boss is no surprise. The legality of funding the protest is something police are looking at, he said. Chambers said he is not aware of a specific sexual assault complaint, but "there has been chatter" and is appealing for anyone who might have been harmed to come forward.
One person helping to fund the protest at Parliament is the Red Stag chief executive Marty Verry. Red Stag has business interests in forestry, timber, property development, and tourism. Verry spoke to Susie Ferguson.

Wow, we made it! 52 weeks in a row all about mass timber construction news and current events! It's a lot of news and made even more special when you think back only five years ago, I struggled to post more than 20 news items in a month! Now we are averaging 100 per month. Happy New Year to you all! I wish you joy and prosperity in 2022! Red Stag is excited to be able to offer a unique, exciting opportunity to an exceptional Operations Manager in the Engineered Wood Product (EWP) sector. If you are an exceptional Operations Manager or similar, here is a great opportunity to drive a brand new Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and Glue Laminated Timber (GLT) plant in Rotorua. Planned on the site of the Toronto Police Service Property Unit — a stretch home to mostly light industrial uses west of the denser Town Centre area — the building will stand out from its nondescript surroundings with a sleek bunker-like exterior that harnesses the sun to power the critical paramedic equipment housed within. The structure of the first floor is mainly Glue-laminated timber (GLT) , and corewall system is concrete structure. The sequential wooden structure system, just like the roots of orchids, grows freely and regularly, supporting the main body of the building. His tours are a fascinating insight into the our local area, and with Andrew's in-depth knowledge, you'll see the very best Exmoor has to offer. In this first of four podcasts which will be broadcast over the next few months, Andrew explains his tour service and outlines what we can expect on this half-day excursion to those impossible to find places within the National Park.Part of our exclusive arrangement with Red Stag Safaris is to offer a kerbside pick-up from each of our cottages, and on the day of recording, Andrew collected us from Minehead and safely and comfortably begun the journey. In this episode, we charted the landscape from Minehead to Porlock Vale - a wonderful first hour. We hope you find this series as fascinating as us. If you would like to book a Red Stag Safari, please contact Andrew directly and read our 'on safari' blog too.
Jeb Sheldon is not your average college student. This Washington State University junior in Agricultural Technology and Production Management is training to inherit the family Oyster business on the shores of Willapa Bay, in Southwest Washington. Jeb sat down with me to share some of the inside details of the oyster business, including the pains and frustrations that are inevitable along the way. We get to hear some insights from the early days of Spartina eradication and Jeb reflects on his high standards for land stewardship, which he credits to his years spent watching his father and grandfather always prioritize the habitat while doing business. We delved into his role as Chaplin (basically like a priest/sheriff) of his WSU fraternity and he spoke on the ways he has grown as a result of the experience, how it can be difficult to dole out punishment to his peers, but he still does it, and how quesadillas changed everything... We talk about his youthful pursuits in the performance and sporting arts; how his passion for hunting and fishing stood in stark contrast to his hatred of the theatre arts, vis-a-vis his critically-acclaimed portrayal of the seahorse in a local theatre production. We finish the conversation with a discussion of the current state of affairs in the cryptocurrency markets, and Jeff shares some of his portfolio secrets.(Ramble by the River is for entertainment only. It is not investment advice.). Jeb is a smart guy with a really bright future ahead of him. He seems to put a lot of effort into thoughtful and measured opinions and he is wise beyond his years. I had a great time making this episode, despite the insane time crunch (I usually have 10 days to edit/produce each episode, I did this one in 2 days)! I hope you enjoy it. The Commerce Commission wants a 'please explain' after timber giant Carter Holt Harvey abruptly cut supplies to a number of building retail chains prompting concerns that costs will rise and construction could slow. The company has stopped selling structural timber to ITM and Mitre 10 but continues to supply to some of the bigger operators. The Commission says it was aware of supply issues in the building industry, however Carter Holt had not specifically advised the commission of its intention to cease supply to some customers. And it says it will speak to Carter Holt to understand what is happening and the potential ongoing implications for competition. Meanwhile the supply squeeze will end up hurting smaller building operators according to one industry insider. Marty Verry is chief executive of Red Stag - a privately owned independent timber company based in Rotorua. He says if the Kawerau mill gets up to speed, the supply should not be a major problem. Carter Holt Harvey has released a statement saying there have been some short-term industry-wide supply issues. It goes on to say it's continuing to meet its contractual obligations and the curtailment of supply relates to around 10 percent of the company's structural timber volume. It says there is no issue related to log supply, and it's not exporting structural timber.
Marty Verry, CEO of Red Stag group talks to Jesse about the current shortage of construction timber for building homes and how long he expects that to last. Red Stag is a privately owned, independent timber company based in Rotorua.

In Episode 88, the lads break down Hillbilly Elegy, Ron Howard's latest movie that is streaming on Netflix. We also honored the hillbilly culture with our choice of drinks. Andrew made a Kentucky Mule, with Wild Turkey 101 (50.5% ABV, out of Lawrenceburg, KY), Sean had Jim Beam Red Stag (32.5% ABV, out of Frankfort, KY), a black cherry liqueur with Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey, and Tomo had Lost Lager (4.7%, 37 IBU), by Brew Dog Brewery, a brewery from Scotland that is also brewing in Columbus, OH. So, tune in, grab one or all of these drinks, and enjoy our highly suspect, er, um, we mean, expert analysis of this movie, its actors' performances, and our take on these adult beverages! Cheers!

Forests are only part of the answer to dealing with climate change, warns Marty Verry, CEO of Red Stag Timber, NZ’s largest timber mill. He says the government’s One Billion Trees Programme could lead to a dangerous glut unless there’s a wholesale adoption of wood for construction, fuel and other downstream products. Could a ‘Wood First’ policy displace concrete and steel? How reliable are forests for carbon sink? And as a source of credits? And what about all that lost farmland? These questions and more on This Climate Business! About MartyMarty Verry is the CEO of Red Stag Timber, NZ’s largest and most advanced timber mill, based in Rotorua. A surfer, dad and convert to climate action, Marty started his sustainability journey after seeing the human impact on the ocean and the opportunity forestry can play in solving our emissions problem – if done right.
