In this episode, hosts Ted Stank and Tom Goldsby welcome Wally Shaw, CEO of Red Stag Fulfillment, to explore how a purpose-built 3PL is carving out a competitive edge by focusing on what others avoid.Shaw shares how Red Stag built its model around big, bulky products—an overlooked segment of the fulfillment market—and why that specialization enables stronger service performance, tighter quality control, and meaningful differentiation. He also discusses the company's distinctive approach to service guarantees, including zero tolerance for shrinkage and financial accountability when service levels are missed. The conversation spans how leading 3PLs are navigating today's most pressing challenges: AI adoption and automation readiness, geopolitical uncertainty, tariffs, and shifting global sourcing patterns. Shaw also offers perspective on why customer selectivity and long-term decision making  can lead to better outcomes for both providers and brands. The episode was recorded virtually on June 9, 2026.Related links:Complete the Annual 3PL Study survey for 2027Register for virtual SCM Academies in Leadership, Finance, Procurement, and TechnologySave the date for the Fall Supply Chain Forum, Nov. 10–12 Download free white papers from UT experts Become a GSCI partner to learn, network, and recruit with the top supply chain education institution in North America  Join the Advanced Supply Chain Collaborative to explore advanced concepts in SCM with top industry experts and scholars   Fill out Tom Goldsby's survey on warehouse automationFollow GSCI on LinkedIn   Subscribe to GSCI's monthly newsletter    Read the latest news and insights from GSCI Text the Tennessee on Supply Chain Management team!

Evan Koster just got back from seven days of public land hunting in New Zealand — no helicopter, no lodge, no estate stags. He hunted tahr in a glacial valley and red stag in the Canterbury High Country with guide Jurgen, carrying everything on his back and doing 5,000 vertical feet of gain literally the day he got off the plane. This conversation is the honest version of New Zealand hunting. We cover what the terrain actually looks like, why the tussock country and scrub edge are the game zone, how red stag compare to elk (less gregarious, more vocal, harder to call across open country), why Evan passed on stags he could have shot and ended up empty-handed on deer, and what New Zealand's hunting culture looks like when you get off the estate. We also get into the invasive species debate - tahr, red deer, and chamois are valued by hunters and locals but under real threat from eradication programs - and how New Zealand's model of wildlife conservation compares to ours. At the end, Evan and Cliff break down the hosted hunt partnership with Jurgen that LKS Outfitters is building - a public land backpack experience unlike anything being offered commercially right now.In this episode:5,000 vertical feet daily — what the terrain actually demandsTahr country: navigating stream beds, impenetrable bush, and glacial basinsHow red stag compare to elk — roar, rut, callability, and body sizeWhy a 12-point stag on public land is equivalent to a 340-inch bull in the Flat TopsNo seasons, no bag limits — and why hunters self-regulate anywayThe invasive species debate: eradication programs vs. a hunting culture fighting backWhat Jurgen's New Zealand public land hunts actually look likeLKS Outfitters hosted hunts with Jurgen — what's coming and how to bookGuest: Evan Koster — Lead guide, LKS Outfitters / Flat Tops Wilderness Guides. Hunting England's “Vampire Deer” & Classic Red Stag Adventures with John Landgraf In this fascinating episode of DSC's Campfires, Larry Weishuhn sits down with longtime friend and hunting companion John Landgraf to recount their recent international adventure in the English countryside—pursuing the unique and elusive “vampire deer,” including Chinese water deer and muntjac. The conversation dives deep into what makes these species so extraordinary. Unlike traditional deer, Chinese water deer lack antlers but feature prominent, tusk-like canine fangs used for fighting—earning them their “vampire” nickname. Larry and John describe the challenges of spotting and stalking these small, quick animals in marshy, reed-filled terrain, where their natural camouflage and erratic movement make for an exciting and technical hunt. They also highlight the expertise of local gamekeepers, whose ability to judge maturity based on fang length, coloration, and physical traits proved critical in selecting the right animal. From gear choices—like the effective use of a .223 rifle—to fieldcraft and shooting techniques, the episode offers practical insights alongside storytelling. Beyond the hunt itself, the episode paints a vivid picture of rural England—hedgerows instead of fences, centuries-old inns, abundant pheasant populations, and a strong conservation culture supported by land management programs. The adventure continues with John's successful pursuit of a classic English red stag, taken on a historic estate rich with wildlife and tradition. Larry shares his own success with a muntjac, rounding out a bucket-list experience decades in the making. Blending global hunting experiences, wildlife biology, and camaraderie, this episode captures the spirit of adventure and appreciation for unique game species across the world. Goodbye, Shopify. See ya later, Etsy. Hasta la vista… Amazon??? Yeah, we said it. Temu has the power to compete with Amazon. Has the Chinese drop shipping company grown too powerful to defeat? Or can our old-school favorites find a way to slay the DTC giant? Nik and Moiz discuss the looming threat of Temu to several major e-commerce retailers. What strategies do they need to stay relevant? Plus, what would it take for Outdoor Voices to crawl out of the grave they dug themselves into? Hear us out— it's definitely not impossible... The guys also discuss the latest acquisition of Asian noodle company, Omsom, by DDC. What, if anything, does it mean for other Asian DTCs like immi, FLY BY Jing, and Sanzo? And later in the episode, Nik declares arbitrage. When is it okay to use arbitrage in the DTC community, and are there any ethical concerns? Well, if we know anything… at the very least, we definitely know where Moiz stands on the issue.   Unravel the complexities of fulfillment with Red Stag - a 3PL that guarantees zero shrink, zero mispicks, and zero missed shipments. We can't escape TikTok Shop, and chances are good neither can you. But is it actually working for the brands that are using it? And what does their AoV look like?  Nik also breaks down TikTok Shop's shift to QVC-like ads as the boys debate the latest trends and happenings in TikTok Shop. How much do affiliates get paid anyway? But let's get down to brass tacks—because the guys are wondering whether or not the US government is trying to ban Shein for legitimate reasons or if they're just plain racist against Chinese companies. Sure they might have a case for banning TikTok, but is there any merit to restricting the fast fashion empire from selling products in the US? Is Shein sourcing its raw materials from dubious sources or is it all just a bunch of smoke without fire? Then, Nik and Moiz make the case for why DTC businesses need to start looking outside the US market for sales. Why aren't more brands considering selling in other countries? And how come most marketing agencies aren't interested in bringing brands to other nations? Plus, Moiz unleashes the smartest business idea he's ever had… or the dumbest idea he's ever had.
