Nu har historikeren Dylan Gottlieb skrevet bogen Yuppies: The Bankers, Lawyers, Joggers and Gourmands Who Conquered New York. Yuppies: The Bankers, Lawyers, Joggers and Gourmands Who Conquered New York er hans første bog. Den udkom i maj 2026 på Harvard University Press.
In the 1980s, yuppies were celebrated in the media and reviled by many others. Working in finance or as management consultants or lawyers, they quickly put their stamp on cities around the country, displacing working class people in places like New York, and remaking the Democratic Party. Historian Dylan Gottleib examines whether they were drivers of financialization and growing social inequality — or crucial cogs in the machine. Not. A. Good. Idea.
The 1980s brought us the young upstarts known as the Yuppies and you may be living their lifestyle today. Dylan Gottlieb is historian at Bentley University and co-host of Who Makes Cents: A History of Capitalism Podcast and author of “Yuppies: The Bankers, Lawyers, Joggers, and Gourmands Who Conquered New York.” He joins host Krys Boyd to discuss the social and political changes Yuppies brought to not just urban settings, but throughout the country, why “self-optimization” is just a byproduct of their high-wage, long-hours lifestyles, and why their success came at the cost of equality. His companion article in The New York Times is “How Yuppies Changed America. Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices
“As recently as the mid-seventies, under 5% of Ivy Leaguers are headed to Wall Street. It's actually not that attractive. But as Wall Street's deregulated, it changes the incentive structure — it makes it much more profitable and demands this huge labor force.” — Dylan Gottlieb They stalked the sidewalks of Manhattan in button-down shirts embroidered with the names of investment banks. They jogged. They drank Beaujolais Nouveau. They gentrified neighborhoods. They were the Yuppies — and with the Boston-based Dylan Gottlieb, they've found their young urban professional biographer. In Yuppies: The Bankers, Lawyers, Joggers, and Gourmands Who Conquered New York, Gottlieb offers both a social history of financialization and a collective biography of the professional class that came of age in the Reagan years. Rather than a passing 1980s stereotype, Gottlieb argues that the Yuppie is a phenomenon that remade the American economy, city, and political class. As recently as the mid-1970s, under 5 percent of Ivy League graduates went to Wall Street. A decade of deregulation later, banks were recruiting a third of graduating classes from top universities. The sweatshop of the meritocracy was born. Most of us are still sweating. Five Takeaways • From Yippie to Yuppie: The Word's Origins: Yuppie resonates with Yippie — the iconographic late-sixties radicals of the New Left, for whom Jerry Rubin was the signifier. The word first appeared in a Chicago alt-weekly in the late 1970s to describe highly educated young people trickling into gentrifying North Side neighbourhoods. It didn't achieve full cultural dominance until 1984, when it became the frame for supporters of Gary Hart's presidential campaign — a prototypical Yuppie candidate who stormed the Democratic primary and represented a new professional vanguard within the party. The word named something that was already happening. It didn't create it. • The Incentive Structure Changed: Under 5% to One Third: As recently as the mid-1970s, under 5 percent of Ivy League graduates went to Wall Street. It was seen as the preserve of WASPy children who used family connections to get a bank job. By the mid-1980s, banks were recruiting roughly a third of graduating classes at top universities. What happened: deregulation made finance enormously more profitable; finance demanded a large educated labour force to do the work of putting finance at the centre of the American economy; and the most talented students — those who might have become poets or public servants — followed the money. At mid-century, the most prestigious option for a Princeton graduate was middle management at a Fortune 500 company. By 1985, it was Wall Street. • Democratization and Distinction: The Double Movement: Gottlieb's central thesis is a double movement. The Yuppie era brought genuine diversification to America's elite: Jewish lawyers could now make partner at firms previously closed to them; women entered investment banks in numbers that would have been inconceivable in 1965; Black and Asian Americans got at least a foot in the door. This was new, and it mattered. Simultaneously, that newly diversified elite pulled further away from the rest of America, extracting profits from companies being financialized and rents from communities being gentrified. Democratization and distinction in constant tension. The elite became more diverse and more remote at the same time. • The Pyramid to Cylinder Shift: AI is about to do to the Yuppie what the Yuppie did to everybody else. Gottlieb spoke recently to an HR representative at an investment bank — name and bank withheld — who said the firm was moving from a pyramid structure to a cylinder structure for employment. The wide base of entry-level workers that finance has depended on since the 1980s will shrink dramatically. Only the best and brightest will be selected; the rest will be automated. Gottlieb wrote about the era of the large pyramid — the exploited many at the bottom who hoped to reach the top. What happens to the professional class when that pyramid disappears? • Are the Yuppies Becoming Socialists? A long-running trend: the pressures of the sweatshop of the meritocracy have embittered many members of the professional class. Academics work in conditions demonstrably worse than they were forty years ago. Doctors are evaluated on metrics that resemble those of factory workers. Journalists are precarious. The housing market in the cities where professionals cluster has made the cost of replicating their social status for their children prohibitive. And into this comes AI, threatening the entry-level pipeline. Gottlieb's question: will the investment bankers see their plight as similar to the Amazon warehouse worker's? Or will the edifice of meritocratic myth-making — the deep conviction that you're special — hold them back from that solidarity? About the Guest Dylan Gottlieb is Assistant Professor of History at Bentley University and co-host of the Who Makes Cents: A History of Capitalism podcast. He is the author of Yuppies: The Bankers, Lawyers, Joggers, and Gourmands Who Conquered New York (Harvard University Press, May 12, 2026), winner of the Herman E. Krooss Prize for Best Dissertation in Business History. He has written for the Washington Post, Gotham, the Journal of American History, and Public Seminar. HER Style Podcast | Buy Less, Shop Smarter, Build a Wardrobe You Love
Picture this: You're at home, feeling totally relaxed in your usual outfit — leggings, oversized sweatshirt, maybe some cozy socks. You're comfortable. You're you. And then your phone buzzes. It's your friend asking if you can meet for lunch in 30 minutes. Suddenly, that comfortable feeling? It's gone. Now you're staring at your closet, trying to figure out what to wear that doesn't scream "I just rolled out of bed" but also doesn't require a full-on production. You end up doing the quick change — throwing on something that feels totally different from who you were just five minutes ago. And honestly? It adds stress to your entire day. Maybe you've even skipped a lunch invite or two because your wardrobe feels ill-equipped and unprepared to get you out the door quickly with confidence. Here's what I want you to consider today: What if comfortable and put-together weren't opposites? What if the gap between those two things was way smaller than you think—and what if closing that gap was actually about something totally different than what you've been told? I'm diving into this today because I know you might be stuck in this exact place. You love fashion. You want to look stylish. But you also want to feel practical and for this to be effortless, and somewhere along the way, you started believing you had to choose. Spoiler alert: You don't. By the end of this episode, you'll understand what's creating the real gap between comfortable and put together, why "effortless style" isn't actually effortless, and how to define your own version of comfort so you can stop feeling that last-minute need to change right before you walk out the door. I'm so glad you're here with me today, friend. This is gonna be a good one! In this episode of Border Collie Geek, Martina explores the realities of recall training when prey drive enters the picture. While many owners succeed with recalls in calm environments, things often fall apart the moment a dog spots a rabbit, jogger, or even a blowing leaf. Martina explains why this happens, how the prey sequence (staring, stalking, chasing) impacts Border Collies in particular, and what you can do to bridge the gap between your training and your dog's instincts. To listen lore about recall go to episode 15:https://open.spotify.com/episode/6WxypisiLCkz8j3xFSoHfm?si=JItgaIh-QIa2fHX-OCim-QUse £20 off for the first month of the Collie Club until the 30th of September 2025https://thatlldoacademy.newzenler.com/courses/the-collie-club?coupon=20offpodcastBook a Discovery Call with me, let's have a free chat about your dog and your training goals:https://calendly.com/martina-thatlldoacademy/discovery-callsGet in touch:https://thatlldoacademy.com/Join the Collie Club, my Online Academy for Border Collie Owners!https://thatlldoacademy.newzenler.com/courses/the-collie-clubTo follow me on social media:Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/ThatllDoAcademy/Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/martina_bordercollie_geek/

Summer is late in the city I stay in. There are discussions about it but no conclusions. Some say - enjoy the extended spring. Nobody minds, as there are high winds coming in from the south-west, and windows rattle. There is more time to get the air conditioners serviced. But the intimations of summer have not ceased. Much before the papers announced the hot days ahead, the mornings had started to get more humid. Joggers knew. Windows in cars started being closed and the air conditioning cranked up. Summer bushes along walking paths started flowering. Pink Bougainvillea, red frangipanis, yellow elders. Flower beds had amaranths, salvias and hollyhocks nodding away delightedly. And as I went to office, Red Road and the Victoria Memorial complex was strewn with gorgeous gulmohur and amaltas, the golden yellow shower tree, the purple jacaranda and the flaming royal poinciana. My drives every morning were ablaze with colour. And I knew though it was a welcome, things would unravel in different ways. The tar on the roads would start to melt, as would the barely hidden anger on the edges of side streets. People would tend to get tired faster and more irritated. Fuses would ignite and punches landed. Relationships would begin to unravel and truths told in harsh tones. People would fall into lust more than they fell in love. And there would be too many misdemeanours conducted by common people in commonplace ways. But legendarily people understand. Even as they fight and argue, they understand that the heat is a character in every situation. People make plans to go to the hills but some refuse. Summers are when they reveal themselves to their own. They write their most honest poetry. And understand the enormity of their misdemeanours- and do not hesitate to ask for forgiveness. Springs just make you glad, happy to be alive, perky without reason. Autumns are for deep depression, to think of the worst life has every given as just desserts: it's the time for seeking redemption. Winters are to freeze inside, to not reveal oneself. Everyone is too embroiled in one's own battles of seeking succour and warmth, to be able to think of being benevolent. But summer is when we allow everything to fall apart. Our clothes, our defences, our truths, our untruths. Even as the most iridescent flowers burst uncontrollably in colours which sometimes hurt the eyes, something soft inside wants to tell truths. It seems easier to give in then rebel, or wallow in stories with long lives. It's good to be ordinary and open. Summers are the time for both passions and truths to find their own paths of destruction or redemption. Whilst other seasons are one dimensional, summers are when the roads get forked, ready to form - or destroy you. Hour 1 Gio is back and has caught up on Hard Knocks. He was shocked by Pro Football Focus's ranking of the Giants roster. He has us guess where we think they have the Giants. PFF has them 31st out of all 32 teams. The Jets are 4th. Boomer and Gio are surprised they are that low. It's clear now that the Giants wanted to trade up for a QB and Boomer says things would have gotten ugly with Daniel Jones if they were successful. Boomer thinks the Giants are portraying some Hard Knocks scenes in specific ways to give off the appearance they want fans to see. Do the Giants have too many voices in the room? Will Brandon Aiyuk's situation impact Davante Adams? Jerry is here for his first update of the day but first Boomer points out that Brock Purdy isn't one of the 50 highest paid 49ers. Purdy and Jordan Love will soon want to get paid. Jerry has audio of Adam Schein saying the Giants are run by a buffoon. Davante Adams spoke highly of Aidan O'Connell and Tom Brady. Caitlin Clark broke a WNBA record with 19 assists in a game. Clark and Sabrina Ionescu will not be in this weekend's 3-point contest. Nobody knows why but Boomer, Gio and Jerry all think it's a missed opportunity for the WNBA. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer recalls a postgame conversation with former Titans coach Jeff Fisher, who will be in-studio with us later this morning. Boomer and Gio remember old energy drinks. ArenaBowl is at the American Dream in New Jersey tomorrow and airing on CBS Sports Network. Boomer and Gio try to convince Eddie to go. YouTube golf is skyrocketing in popularity. Baseball needs to find its way to younger eyeballs online. The Copa America final almost beat the All-Star game in the ratings. Hour 2 Someone sent Gio a YouTube link of the game the guys just discussed when Jeff Fisher asked Boomer about the offense the Bengals ran. Gio's glory days of being a football fan coincided with Fisher's late 90s/early 2000s Titans team. Those Titans were in two of the most memorable games in the last 30 years. There used to be a “Cocaine” energy drink. Jerry returns for an update but first Gio asks if anyone cares about the Olympics next week. Gio will watch with his daughters. Chris “Mad Dog” Russo and Paul Finebaum got heated on First Take. Dog can talk USC football going back to 1910. In the final segment of the hour, Peter Schwartz is here to tell us about the Arena Football League and Arena Bowl before Jeff Fisher joins the show. Hour 3 Jeff Fisher is here in-studio. The former head coach of the Titans and Rams is now the commissioner of the Arena Football League. ArenaBowl XXXIII will be played at the American Dream in New Jersey tomorrow. Jerry returns for an update but first, Boomer and Gio note how good Jeff Fisher looks and Gio doesn't not agree with Boomer that he looks like J.D. Vance. Peter has to interrupt the segment for a moment and now we wonder what we can get out of him at the next Boomer & Gio live. Kim Kardashian got a salmon sperm facial. Joggers are controversial. In the final segment of the hour, Gio says that any WNBA players who have been jealous of Caitlin Clark should back off that after she helped the WNBA procure a $2 billion media rights deal. Boomer and Gio wonder what's next for Brandon Aiyuk. Hour 4 A conversation between Joe Scheon and Dan Morgan on Hard Knocks led Gio to wonder if Schoen and Brian Daboll are on the hot seat this season. Boomer thinks the offseason version of Hard Knocks was a compromise between the team and league. The NFL wanted the Giants on the training camp version of Hard Knocks but the Giants did not want to do it. Caleb Williams and his agents tried to get creative with his rookie contract. If the NFL does go to an 18 game regular season, the players will have to get something back. Jerry returns for his final update of the day but first Gio and Boomer say how happy it makes them to see Marc Malusis. Moose lights up a room. How much do big mascots make? There are no excuses for Team USA at the Olympics. The Moment of The Day involves Chris Russo telling Paul Finebaum all about the history of USC football. In the final segment of the day, Boomer and Gio discuss the report that the Jets reached out to Arthur Smith to help run their offense. How annoyed are they by the perception that Aaron Rodgers can do whatever he wants? Mrs. Met is Evan's hall pass.

Women face various dangers while jogging on trails, stemming from safety concerns that can arise due to their vulnerability and societal factors. These dangers include the risk of harassment, assault, abduction, and injury. The secluded nature of many trails, lack of proper lighting, and limited access to help can exacerbate these risks. Women often feel a need to be hyper-vigilant, altering their behavior and routines to mitigate these dangers. However, it's important to note that not all trails and locations pose the same level of risk, and many women continue to enjoy jogging safely by taking precautions and advocating for improved safety measures.Statistics: Statistics on the dangers women face while jogging on trails can vary depending on location and data availability. However, some general trends and figures highlight the risks:Harassment and Assault:According to a 2016 survey by Runner's World, 43% of women have experienced harassment during a run.A survey conducted by Stop Street Harassment in 2014 found that 65% of women had experienced street harassment, which can extend to trails as well.Abduction and Violence:Exact statistics on abduction specifically on trails are harder to come by. However, cases of women being abducted while jogging in public areas have been reported. The threat of violence, including physical assault, remains a concern for women joggers on trails.Injury and Accidents:Injuries can result from falls, uneven terrain, or lack of proper lighting on trails.A study published in the "Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness" in 2020 reported that female runners are more prone to certain injuries compared to their male counterparts.Safety Measures:Many women take precautions, such as running during daylight hours, informing someone about their route, and avoiding secluded trails. Some choose to run with a partner, carry personal safety devices, or take self-defense classes.Advancements in technology, such as GPS trackers and safety apps, have provided additional security options.Advocacy and Awareness:Women's advocacy groups and organizations have been pushing for increased safety measures on trails and in public spaces.Social media campaigns and awareness initiatives encourage dialogue about the issue and promote collective actionIn this episode we take a look at some of the other high profile murder cases that involve women jogging on trails.
