Old School ? What exactly is that ? What does that mean ? Hi There ......Here is part 2 of the Rabbit Trails podcast Originally , this term was used to refer to something from the past that would bring back memories of those time. However that reference has been skewed in the Hair Color business and now many times is used to discount , downplay , or diminish some of the procedures of the past. The problem is that the one thing that has not changed at all is the very structure we work with everyday . The hair ! It's still a physical , visual , and chemical structure comprised of : Carbon , Oxygen , Hydrogen , Nitrogen , and Sulfur. In this episode we will discuss some “social media” comments that attempt to diminish the filling or pre-pigmentizing procedure and dare to declare that filling un-even hair strands is unnecessary in todays world of hair color. This , of course is nonsense ! Ask yourself , how many times have you had a color result develop unevenly or develop darker than you expected ? I am sure you can agree that this procedure is , not only important , but essential to your hair color skills. So , Press Play …….and 6.5 min later , you may understand why the title “Old School” actually means “Foundational” Enjoy the listen ! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dennis-gebhart/support

Rabbit Trails has been a big hit on YouTube , so for those who did not see those broadcasts , we are choosing select segments and posting them in audio format here on our podcast platform. We think you will find the information benificial and you will discover that our message has remained consistent throughout our time on all “social media” outlets. In this Episode we discuss the chemistry and function of “clear shades” of color. What are they ? How are they used with the most success? Do they perform the way many educators and manufactures describe. We may “rock the boat” a little bit in this episode . You listen , and see if it makes sense to you . Living in the Moment ! Not an easy task for so many of us , right ? Because we live in a society that demands , we reflect on the past and focus on the future , we sometimes forget to “live in the moment” and how beneficial that can be to our health (Physical & Mental ) , our relationships , and the rest of our life's journey. You know the saying “Stop and smell the roses” I will be the first to admit , that in my younger days , my drive for success and building a great future for my family caused me to, (willingly ), sacrifice some of those special moments I will never get back. How many of you found yourself in the same situation ? “Be like water” ? Wonder what than means? It's all about flexibility and adaptability ……. Sometimes the smartest person in the conversation , is the one not speaking ! Being flexible , is sometime the most difficult thing to do . Have you ever heard two hair colorists arguing over the “Color Wheel” ? Absolutely , and that's a “universal law” ! A universal law of “Physics” ! So , if we argue over that , think about the multitude of subjects that can create such controversy. Being flexible does not mean always giving in. It means having a willingness to adjust behaviors without giving up you core beliefs. Adaptability is the other half of that equation…… A willingness to adapt , if necessary , to achieve the goal , to stay relevant , to insure transfer of the message. In this episode , Anthony shares his perception on both of these subjects and how acquiring this behavior in expiate our journey to mastery and success. “A little bit of History” We are very excited about this episode for two reasons ….. I have the opportunity to be interviewed We get to share some of the history that has brought our industry to this point. Sometimes it's a great idea and a interesting journey , to look back at products we used , techniques we were taught , challenges we encountered , and success we had , in spite of , what might be considered limited resources, in this day and age. This also gives me an opportunity to pay tribute to the pioneers who paved the way , without the Internet , Instagram , Facebook , or YouTube. Somehow , they managed to overcome obstacles , achieve success , and generate substantial revenue to advance their careers , support their families , and live a good life. How did they do it ? Well , if you think about its everyone has their challenges in life , butt who said the road to success and happiness was a straight line? I think , sometimes , society makes it to easy to “Quit” or walk away , rather than persevere . Its amazing , when you think about it , how having perseverance , helps us to push through in those difficult times. Like Rocky Balboa said …….”It's not how many times you get knocked down; It's how many times you get back up and keep pushing forward” In this episode Anthony will share his perspective on developing perseverance , avoiding “self sabotage”, seeing each challenge as lesson and not an obstacle, and positive “self talk” that will help develop self confidence and create a pathway to success. I am so happy to have my friend Anthony Prestto back to share some perceptions about “Time” It's all about time. Time is the one commodity , that once it's gone , you never get it back ! It is also , probably , the one commodity that we waste , and don't realize , until our portion begins to run out ! Because we live in such a fast passed society today , we sometimes squander the time we have been given. I think , especially those of us in the Beauty Profession , can relate to that. Welcome back to “Bruce Lee's 7 Lessons” Today's lesson …..”Happiness” Sounds simple , right ? Be happy ! We have all heard the song ! But its not always as easy as we think. What if I told you that some people spend their life searching for “Happiness”. This , of course , leads to looking for the external stimulation to make them happy and always finding a downside in anything that shows the potential for happiness. They “self sabotage “ any relationship because they are convinced that something will go wrong down the line and in order to avoid disappointment , they prefer to walk away. What if I told you that some people find happiness early in their life and “camp out” on that happiness, because they fear they will never find it again. This , of course , turns into complacency , mediocre , and eventually a very small life. Here's a really big secret …….”Happiness is not a person , place , or thing….it's a mindset”! You control your mindset ! Did you know that you can use “Happiness” as a tool to affect how others interact with you ? Variables : #1 Not consistent , or having a fixed pattern liable too change #2 An element , features , or factor that is liable too change. What if I told you that there are around 15 different variables , that if not in line , could cause you to achieve un-expected hair color results? There may be more than 15 , but at Guru Nation , we have identified , what we believe are the top 15 that all colorists need to be aware of. It has nothing to due with products! It has to do with things outside the chemical mixture , but when exposed to these , sometimes unforeseen , forgotten , or ignored forces , we relinquish our control over a successful result. Welcome to episode #1 of “Bruce Lee's 7 Lessons” In this 7 part series we will share time with my colleague and dear friend Anthony Presotto as he guides us through 7 lessons that he learned from Bruce Lee , that made him a better hairdresser . I know , it seems a bit odd that a “martial artist” could inspire a hairdresser , however I believe you will be surprised how some of these ideas , thoughts , and pontifications are guide points that do more than make us better at our craft. They make us better “Humans” Guide points that help us appreciate the life we have been given , the family we are part of , the person we have become, the life long relationships we are part of , our craft , and our fellow “humankind “ We begin with ….Life's purpose ! Welcome to Episode #3 in the “Everything Speaks” series ! In this episode we will discuss the “Kinesthetic” learner. Kinesthetic is defined as : Relating to a person's awareness of the position and movement of the parts of the body. So , what does that have to do with learning ? A lot! These are the people who cannot sit still for long periods of time without drifting off (losing connection) with the facilitator. You have seen this happen in your classes , right? You look out in your audience and you see them looking like their mind is somewhere else, or you watch them bail on your class as they head for the exit door. They need to be active in the classroom as much as possible in order for them to feel fulfilled with the educational content. There are techniques a trainer can apply that will help keep this person engaged. Press Play ……..and 14 minutes later , you may have some answers and ideas you can work with. Enjoy the listen !
Kinetic Energy ? What does it mean ? Have you heard the newest terminology being thrown around by “social media influencers” in the past 30 days ? Here we go again ….the very people that complain about too much science , are the very ones that are now talking K1 , K2 , K3 This is accurate information but, it's not the whole story and , most importantly , it's not exclusive to any hair color brand. Better yet , it's not exclusive to hair color ! Do we actually know what Kinetic means ? Welcome to session 2 of “Everything Speaks”! In this session we will discuss the Auditory learner. I know , you are probably thinking , I get this ……auditory has something to do with hearing , so it must mean they need to hear me, right ? Well , not really … That's only part of it. Auditory does have to do with hearing , but that opens up an entire world of skills and answers those questions why , in many of our classes , we don't understand why they were not more engaged. “I gave great information” “I even had a few funny stories” They just seemed to be checked out ! One of the first rules in” human interaction” is ; “It's not what you say , it's how you say it” Press play….. and hear some information that you might find meaningful. Feedback welcome !
Have you heard the term “Everything Speaks” ? Well , in education , that is true in every aspect ! So , as trainers or trainers in training , it is essential to not only understand our content , but we must also have an understanding of the “Adult Learner” and how they learn. What gets their attention ? What makes information meaningful for them ? How do we keep them engaged in the learning process ? What if I told you that content without engagement is really meaningless. Would you believe me ? In this series within the “Trainer to Trainer” series , we will focus on learning styles and how to maximize our engagement with them. I call this series , “Everything Speaks” Have your note book handy because there will be some useful information shared and you will want to write it down and use it as a resource. And don't forget that if you really want to improve your skills , Guru Nation offers a course for Trainers called “Teach for Transfer” This is a 30 day program consisting of 4 sessions (1 each week) , along with homework between sessions that will help you sharpen your training skills. We believe this training will help anyone who is in charge of the educational process wither its In-Salon programs , Stage performances, or simply training your staff. Take a listen ! I think you will be glad you did ! If you find this episode beneficial , send us your feedback.

Trainer to Trainer I am so excited about this new series where we have an opportunity to hear from the people who have worked on their skills , not only as a hairdresser , but a trainer as well. Did you know that hairdresser skill sets and Trainer skills sets are comprised of different skills ? Just because I can execute wonderful hairdressing results behind the chair , does not mean I will be a great educator ! There is a huge difference between “sharing” and “training” In this series we hope to offer insight into what it takes to be a successful trainer and some perceptions and challenges all trainers share. So , if you desire to be an educator , want to improve your training skills, or need a place to find out that you are not the only person who faces challenges when it comes to facilitating a successful class , this might be a series you want to listen to. We begin our series with Anthony Presotto from Queensland Australia. A long time friend and mentor to me Anthony has an extensive history , as a Salon owner , educator for several hair color companies , a prolific author of articles & books , not only on hair color , but also hairdressing , hair design , and self improvement. I am sure you will find him delightful , engaging , and a valuable resource for knowledge , strategies , and behaviors to help us all chart our path to success. Does color lift color ? Well , the conventional answer has always been no ………but , is that really true ? It all depends on how we qualify lift ! I we qualify lift as breaking down all artificial dyes in the hair fiber from previous colors , then you may not agree with what we are about to share in this podcast. What if I told you that hair color used on previously tinted hair can , in some cases , affect the previous color ? Would you believe me ? Take a listen to this podcast , then share your thoughts and any questions you might have. Enjoy the listen !
Do you have "aluma-phobia" ? The fear that your aluminum whisk will create a chemical reaction with your hair color products. Stop It ! Let me share a few things you should know about this "alloy" , that may eliminate your fears. It will only take 10min and 17 seconds Enjoy !
Have you heard ? There seems to be a belief out there that "wet balayage" (Applying your lightener to wet hair instead of dry hair) allow you to lighten the hair faster. If speed is your only concern , then , you do you ! However , there are a few things you might want to know. 1. When hair is wet , it is in it's weakest state, because it has lost 1/3 of it's strength (Hydrogen bonds) and this make it very susceptible to more damage than it normally exposed to. Imagine pulling or stretching wet hair and then applying the most aggressive solution in hair color to that stressed fiber. 2. Using lightener on wet hair will exponentially increase damage ! Even though you may not see it.....don't believe me , do a tensile strength test on the hair after the lightening service and see for yourself. 3. Science teaches us that water will actually dilute the action of a bleach mixture by affecting the developer. Not the powder. Spend the next 27 min with us and it may change the way you think about hair color forever. Enjoy your listening !

In this series you are invited to join us as we discuss each one of these product types and the misunderstandings we have about what they are , how they work , and when is the best time to use them. We will probably “rock some boats” , but sometimes , that comes with the territory . So take 25min and join us as we begin our journey talking about “molecular weight” , treatments vs. conditioners , and protein vs moisture. Enjoy your listening !
Hello Friends : In this episode , I take a moment to share my purpose in writing my new book , "Captain Color vs. The Pigment Pirates". For those who are not familiar with my history in the beauty business , I wanted to give them a little insight about what "triggered" me to write this book and a little history on what I call Pigment Pirates" My beginnings were not that different from anyone else. The challenges began after I experienced several hair color failures. And then re-surfaced , when I went to work for a hair color manufacture. It was a "roller coaster" of mixed messages , confusing information , and a cavalcade of contradicting education from many manufactures. I decided that if I could shine a light on Tales vs. Truths , it would help others achieve success much faster. I you have read , are reading , or plan to read my book , you will find it walks to the beat of a different drum. Some information you may have never heard. Some information that challenges your belief system and things you have been taught. But , that was the plan .....Rock the boat ! Shake things up ! Most importantly , fill in those missing pieces you have been struggling with for so long. This is the first of several episodes that will be devoted to different chapters in the book. Enjoy the listen!
Ah , yes ......Concentrates ! This product has probably created more confusion and fear than any other product we use , including Bleach ! Why is that ? Well , it because , in most cases , concentrates are the one family of hair color, that get the least amount of explanation in our industry. Vague explanations and confusing information like "our concentrates have no level"! Now , tell that to a hair colorist who was trained in levels and you send them into a tailspin. That's why the sale of concentrates does not compare to normal hair color sales. Because no one helps the hair colorist understand what they are and how to use them. Join Max and I as we shed some light on this mysterious product and why it can be an essential tool in the hair color process. Enjoy the Listening !
Here's a term that has been given a second life ! If you have never heard of base breaking or you not sure on how the procedure is performed , then this episode will give you some clarity. Do we recommend you do a base break or base softening on every guest ? No ! This behavior has a specific purpose and set of guidelines we need to adhere to. That's why , many times, a base break turns out to be a color change. Not so good for the colorist or the guest! Join Max and I as we share some insights into this classic , but relevant , service and how it can become an amazing part of your hair color arsenal. Enjoy your Listening !
It's always scary when a guest says ......I feel some sensitivity from this hair color ! OMG ! Not sensitivity , not a chemical reaction ! Hold on ...............take a moment , and calm down What if I told you that many people mis-interpret the feeling of active solution on there scalp as an allergic reaction. And many times , the reason a guest will have a sensitive reaction is , in part , our behavior and handling of the chemical solution. Don't believe me ? Take the next 21 min and listen in as we share some information that may help you prevent most of the sensitivity issues we deal with. Enjoy your listen !
Have you ever watched two hair colorists trying to communicate with each other ? Pretty funny right ? I believe that's because we do not have a common language in hair color and as a result of that terminologies and definitions keep getting re-named or re-branded as new generations of hair colorists enter the profession. Many times this leads to confusion ! Especially when the words we use to describe are not relevant to what is actually occurring during the chemical process In this episode , we discuss some of the words we use and how in-accurate they are. Enjoy your listening !
Have you ever noticed how much anxiety is expressed by some of our colleagues when they are about to change hair color brands , either by their own decision or by a management decision they have no control over ? Why do you think they react that way ? I belive it's because our industry has been "brainwashed" to belive that there is a huge difference between brands. For many this triggers the thought that they have to begin their learning all over again , and no one wants to do that! I invite you to join me in this podcast as I share some important information with you that just might remove the fear. Enjoy your listening !
Bands , I hate them , don't you ? Why do I keep getting them ? How can I prevent them from occurring ? Do we really understand what's involved in a "Retouch" service ? What if I told you that there is a lot more to a retouch service than just duplicating the formula we used last time ? In fact , most successful retouch services do include some type of color correction or adjustment , although , as an industry , that's not always they way it is understood. Join me as I share some ideas , strategies , scenarios , and facts with you that will hopefully increase your success and grow your confidence in your formulation skills. Enjoy !
I think one of the biggest challenges in the world of hair color , is the language we use. There is so much confusion when are are performing elect hair color services over a wide expanse of time, and the terms we use garner a new meaning with every generation that come along. In this episode we attempt to give clarity to the word "Toner" Our desire is that this will give Salon Professionals a solid foundation in understanding these terms and what they really mean. If you find this helpful please tell your friends. Enjoy listening !
Let's talk about peroxide , shall we ? Even though its a very common part of our hair color services , I wonder why we hold the beliefs that we do , about what it is and how it works. Why do we belive that it knows when to deposit only vs. Lighten (Lift)? Why do we belive that it stops working and is covered to H2O or water ? Hopefully you will allow me to share some information on this subject that may give you some clarity. Enjoy your listening !
