The problem with that is that collaboration takes time, coordination, skill and effort, which means sometimes it gets put aside for the sake of something else. Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/rt2-wVC0_FU Over the last few months, PAW Health has been blessed to have Rebecca Enerson and Aimee Labrie from the MSU Veterinary School here with us on a summer long externship. As third year vet students, it was their mission to "put on the shoes" of emergency veterinary medicine and see if it is actually of interest to them. They've been able to work on their skills and knowledge base as well as make long lasting connections with those who are here and committed to serve the patient. But they also did another, unintended thing. They found their "why." The year 2020 and into 2021 was a dark one for them as vet students. Almost all learning transitioned to being online. Events ceased. Friends and colleagues began to struggle and over time, many felt as though all hope was lost. They began to wonder why they even bothered embarking on this difficult journey in the first place. This is the story of how both Rebecca and Aimee re-found their "why." We hope you enjoy it. Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Q64-hvP1_9w Working the overnights as a veterinarian can be a tall task. You're typically one of very few, if not the only vet on shift within a hundred mile radius. You're only seeing critical and urgent care patients. You have to perform surgeries and attend to hospitalized patients with a high degree of both efficiency and accuracy. And you almost always have to do it while your clients wish they didn't have such a long wait time. In short, the veterinary night lift is not an easy one. It's no wonder that so many veterinary professionals prefer to work during daylight hours. So, for the crazy few that are attracted to the role, what keeps them coming back? Do they see great purpose in what they do or are they just gluttons for punishment. To find out, we have Dr. Rheannon Burris join us to discuss the last year of her time as an overnight veterinarian and how it has taken her from being a baby doctor to a true veterinary professional. Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/ZbjW0bKBlVU  We know that there is a significant gap in between the demand for veterinary services and the availability of veterinary services. But, per the AVMA, we have a surplus of doctors in the profession (in small animal clinics), so that means that we have to look further. It has been reported that there are.6 CVTs for every 1 DVM in the profession. CVTs, paired with uncertified medical staff, hereby referred to as MSS (Medical Support Staff) are the hands that every doctor uses to implement patient care. That means diagnostics, treatments, surgeries, vaccines, estimates... Basically everything that happens in a veterinary clinic has to go through the hands of the medical support team before anything happens. That means that when there's a lack of skilled workers to fulfill what is necessary, patient care suffers. So how do we get more people interested and involved in veterinary medicine? We first have to make it more than just another job. Do you think working as a CVT or MSS is a viable long term career option? Let us know in the comments! Like, Share and Subscribe! Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/6I9FZbt7058  The Washington Post recently released an article discussing the seven industries most desperate for workers. You can find that article here: https://wapo.st/2SIfwpE   This led Ben, Dr. Katie and Dr. Caroline into a discussion on whether or not the veterinary industry has problems more sourced in being short staffed or in being inefficient. If you have listened to the PAWCast in the past, you know that we are big believers in care provision models heavily focused on efficiency and availability, but we can also acknowledge that not everyone can perform veterinary medicine the way that we do at PAW Health Network. So, to understand the issue of veterinary staff shortages more effectively, this episode is a deep dive into the reality of staffing, wages, benefits and the impact of COVID-19 on the veterinary community. The Reality of Veterinary Mental Health feat. Dr. Dustin Kieschnick | PAWCast 64

If you have listened to the PAWCast at any point, you know we are big believers in the concept of accountability. We have analyzed the process of reaching mutual solutions both in the consultation room with caregivers, in the treatment area with our teams, and in meetings with our leaders. In that process, we have concluded through many trials and errors that we HAVE to start with a shared reality before we can implement any (hopefully effective) solutions. So knowing that there is a significant issue regarding the mental health of veterinary professionals, we seek to apply the same problem solving method by first establishing a professionally understood and shared reality. With that goal in mind, it is time to bring in a professional. Dr. Dustin Kieschnick received his doctorate from the joint program between the Stanford University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology. He is currently the Associate Director of Research of Scalable Therapeutics at the University of California, San Francisco. He has trained at the Palo Alto VA Medical Center and the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx, New York. Dr. Kieschnick's research and clinical focus is on grief, trauma, and suicidality. Prior to his career in clinical psychology, Dr. Kieschnick served in the United States Marine Corps for 9 years. Dr. Kieschnick is also a contributor to the Veterinary Mental Health Initiative leading weekly support groups and one on one sessions. You can find more information on the group here: https://bit.ly/2SvPZzO In this episode, we will discuss Dr. Kieschnick's background, military experience, career path and professional understanding of the state of mental health in the veterinary industry and how that relates to our experiences here at PAW Health. The outsider to the conversation assumes that a fight was occurring when in fact, your were merely collaborating with no attention to the emotional management between each other. When you encourage maximum individuality, it can yield both great returns but also unnecessary conflict. We as individuals are difficult to understand, often times to others and sometimes to ourselves. So if you value people being themselves, what keeps them together? How do you have a unified team of individuals and not force people into a specific box of behaviors and motivators? How do you actually keep people from fighting and encourage collaboration? You do it through shared purpose. Being here to serve the same goal is the glue between a team of unique individuals. In this episode, we discuss how two very unique individuals in Molly and Caroline are able to collaborate so effectively even though they are very different from one another. We review their ADVanced Insights Assessment data to understand more effectively where their natural conflict points are and how to at LEAST manage them, if not use them to their advantage in patient care. We also review what they admire most about each other in the workplace as well as what they find most infuriating! If you are ready to take the next step in collaboration, this episode is for you. The more we isolate our clinics, the more we niche down and the more we focus on our own outcomes over the industry, the worse the problems become. On this weeks PAWCast, Dr. Carlo and Ben dissect a recommendation to limit availability and affordability within the veterinary clinic to improve the survival mode of the staff. We also discuss John Nash's non-cooperative game theory and how that thinking by professionals impacts the well being of their patients. It's time. We need to unify. For the first time, the PAWCast assigned homework in episode 55. Molly was tasked with drawing the lines between clinic process and our shared purpose of Serve The Patient. As any good teacher does, this week is all about the beginning of her journey in learning that method of communication and some of the initial roadblock she has faced. We use tools such as her assessment and the dichotomy of leadership to further understand those issues and relate them in a universal way to those seeking to improve their collaboration within their clinic. We also discuss the couple times Molly has had to work within the state board review process as a veterinary technician, as well as a highly unique 'Heather' case as we refer to them here at PAW. In this episode, we discuss Molly's growth plan, her path forward in improving collaboration, the things she has learned in learning by accountability, the insanity of working night shifts, and how to communicate purpose within process and why that works so well in coaching. In all honesty, has your intuition ever been wrong? Have you ever regretted following your gut instinct? Most of the time, we try to do the 'logical' thing against our instinct for many and various reasons, however that can lead us down unfulfilling paths. In our professional lives, the 'logical' choice can lead us away from our true passions or into serving ideas that are finite in their measure. On this weeks PAWCast, Dr. Caroline and Ben tackle the idea of trusting your gut. We talk about how to listen to get more in tune with your intuition. We discuss the idea of putting a decision to a coin flip, the feeling of hoping it falls a certain way, and how to follow that instinct. We also discuss how to be selective in who you put your work into and how your intuition tells you to get out when necessary. What do you do to be more in tune with your intution? Young veterinary professionals are nearing graduation and the beginning of their working lives. Many have already accepted their first job offers, but the status of our industry has sown significant doubt into the minds of those entering the profession in thinking they may never find a place they truly love to work. Our profession is filled with passionate, intelligent and altruistic people, but the slow death of the traditional practice and the overtaking of corporate medicine doesn't provide a lot of hope for our best and brightest. On this weeks PAWCast, we are joined by future Dr. Breanna Demaline. Bre attends Michigan State University CVM and is the president of the MSU VBMA (Veterinary Business Management Association) chapter. We have had the great opportunity to collaborate with and mentor Dr. Demaline since the beginning of her veterinary school experience, and during a recent VBMA event, she posed a great question. "What if I never find my dream practice?" In this episode, Dr. Carlo, Dr. Caroline, Dr. Bre and Ben all discuss the search for a great practice to work in and potentially purchase as well as what variables to audit while you are working to know if you're in the right place. A common idea being utilized in veterinary schools is the concept of graduating students that are "day one ready." Although it is a great sentiment, some details of what it actually means to be day one ready have been ill defined or missed entirely. So what does it actually mean to be day one ready? What are the expectations of clinic owners of those recently graduated? How much knowledge do you have to have at the ready to walk into a consultation with your clients? What skills do you need to be a productive member of the team? How will you succeed? In this episode of the PAWCast, Tuesdays with Caroline edition, we explore the concept of being day one ready, and how the only thing that is necessary to succeed in your first days, weeks and months, is a great mindset. Knowing how to learn and trusting the process of improving your abilities each day is equally if not more important than the didactic knowledge you obtained in vet school. Primarily though, it's about setting the standards between you and your employer. What are you expecting in terms of education and a reasonable start up timeframe. How will questions be received in the clinical setting? What deliberate steps will be taken to ensure a base level skill set to be built upon. Mentorship has become a standard expectation for graduation DVM students in their first years in practice. There is a lot of power in mentorship in accelerating careers towards success and improving patient care. However, as the term has been used more and more, we have forgotten a simple question, what is mentorship? This question is one that needs definition and constant refinement as it varies person to person, mentee to mentee and mentor to mentor. We are all likely to have different expectations as mentees and mentors, so why are we leaving the success of that relationship up to chance? Why are some of us expecting the other party to contribute their entire selves while the other contributes little to nothing? In this episode of the PAWCast, we are blessed to have Dr. Katie Niksich join us in the studio as we discuss the balance of mentorship and how to best set the bounds of the relationship that has the greatest potential to propel a young veterinary professional's career forward. A star mentor is the person or people who is ready, willing and able to help improve your confidence so that you are more able to improve your competence. These people are typically your best trainers, but not always viewed as the highest producers. Their tendency to lead from behind allows them to be taken for granted, even though they are the glue that holds the entire team together. Star mentors are an ideal combination of confidence and competence. They can perform their job duties well and will both actively and passively guide others to success. They will often become the standard to which others aspire to be.But what about when confidence or competence are lacking? What is the result of role or cultural risks? Are we creating imposter syndrome without knowing it?In this episode of the PAWCast, we explore the details of the confidence/competence grid and what it means to be a star mentor, as well as how to setup a veterinary clinic to use this information to collaborate, problem solve and implement solutions. This is the third of a three part series on the star chart.Do you struggle with confidence even though you know you can do what you have to do? Engaging tough communication and conflict is not an easy thing to do, but it is a necessary thing to do. That means that it is worth doing well. The first step though, is agreeing on WHY you want to do it. Who or what are you going to go through that struggle for. If you share that with your team, nothing can stop you. Then its all about try, fall, adapt and improve. There is nothing wrong with trying and falling. That is one of the best ways to learn. But when you fall, you have to collaborate. You have to work with your team in establishing a shared reality, owning your mistakes, giving and accepting forgiveness and then developing inclusive and well rounded solutions and plans. This episode of the PAWCast is all about the process of collaborating with your veterinary team to understand your problems and communicating your way into great solutions. You can do this. Imposter Syndrome is a mindset that has penetrated the veterinary industry more than we realize. It seems like every new graduate is talking about it before they even have a chance to prove they AREN'T an imposter in the workplace. We would argue that there isn't a problem with imposter syndrome, rather, that there is a problem in perspective. We are simply looking around more than we are at ourselves.Developing a system that allows you to have a goal, but to focus on the process of achieving that goal sets the stage for you to make incremental, consistent improvements. Comparing yourself to the person you were yesterday is a fair judgement. So stop comparing yourself to those that are around you.How do you do that? You make a plan. Set your goals in stone and your plans in sand. Learn how to be adaptive and adjust as you move forward. Read resources on improving your perspective and your skill sets. Get a mentor that will help you shorten the learning curve.Don't focus on the last step. Focus on the next step. What are you doing to limit imposter syndrome? COVID-19 has had a significant negative impact on millions of people. It is not something anyone wanted to have happen and it's negative effects should not be minimized. However, there has been an interesting shift in the mindset and buying behavior of our clients since the inception of the pandemic. Folks that are typically not accepting of ideas that are new and different are being forced into welcoming change in everything they do. With that change in mindset, we see that as an opportunity to adopt change into your clinic, especially in two specific ways. One is going to be adoption of a triage based model in your practice. COVID has created a necessity for people to limit any and all barriers to income generation. This makes the 'schedule' based harder to implement for the sake of the patient. Clinics around us are books two to four weeks out, which has swelled our same day case load significantly. If clinics are able to increase availability, clients are almost certainly sure to be grateful and more willing to provide care for their patients. Two is the implementation of a standard patient separation protocol. First, if you elect a triage based system, this is a protocol that is necessary to ensure proper medical monitoring. However, the necessity of curbside care has opened the door to the idea of speaking with clients without them holding their patients and simply not paying attention. We integrated patient separation years ago and have seen that consultations are more effective and treatment plan compliance is significantly higher. It is also more effective for the learning of new staff, and less stressful for the overwhelming majority of patients that receive care are our clinic.Do you see yourself realizing this opportunity for change, or are you excited to get back to the way things were? All of the reading and contemplation I have done seems to have led me to this word. To have a purpose that you believe in so strongly that you are RELENTLESS in the fulfillment of that mission. So many companies, teams and individuals have mastered this art, but it seems to be something that is missing pretty significantly in the veterinary world, even though we have one of the most tangible purposes of any industry.
