What does it truly mean to have a vocation—and how is it different from a career? In this thought-provoking conversation, Steven Garber and Dru Johnson explore the deep disconnect between faith and everyday work, challenging the dualism that separates “spiritual” callings from ordinary life. Garber argues that vocation is not reserved for clergy or religious roles but is integral to the mission of God. Drawing from biblical theology, church history, and lived experience, the discussion highlights how modern culture often reduces calling to career success, income, or personal fulfillment—leaving many disillusioned. Together, they unpack the tension between vocation and occupation, the myth of “doing what you love,” and the overlooked dignity of ordinary work—from parenting to manual labor. The conversation also addresses the Protestant work ethic, the confusion between money and meaning, and why younger generations struggle with career pressure and purpose. With insights shaped by L'Abri, Hebraic thought, and a lifelong exploration of what it means to be human, Garber offers a compelling vision: true vocation is about coherence—aligning who we are with how we live in the world. This episode is essential listening for anyone wrestling with calling, work, and the search for a meaningful life. Greg LaBrie, Vice President of Technology Solutions at Worldcom Exchange Inc. (WEI), joined Technology Reseller News Publisher Doug Green to discuss how AI and next-generation connectivity—anchored by WEI Connect and Starlink—are reshaping enterprise networking. WEI, a long-standing value-added reseller founded in 1989, has evolved into a provider of integrated IT and connectivity solutions. With WEI Connect, the company is bringing enterprise-grade structure, visibility, and support to emerging technologies like Starlink, transforming them into fully managed, business-ready services. LaBrie described AI in telecom as the foundation for self-healing, autonomous networks driven by telemetry and real-time decision-making. “For us, AI means having networks that are self-healing and autonomous—collecting data, making decisions, and keeping users connected without them even knowing it's happening,” he said. Starlink plays a central role in this vision, using AI to dynamically select satellites and ground connections to maintain performance. WEI enhances this capability by aggregating data through APIs, applying predictive analytics, and integrating SD-WAN intelligence to determine the best available connection—whether satellite, fiber, or 5G—on a per-application basis. The result is an outcome-based network where connectivity is seamless and resilient. Users experience uninterrupted service—even during live sessions—as traffic is automatically routed across the optimal path. This approach not only improves uptime but also enables new use cases, including real-time telemetry collection in remote or hard-to-reach environments. Looking ahead, WEI sees continued advances in AI-driven automation, with increasing amounts of data enabling more predictive and autonomous network management. As enterprise reliance on connectivity grows, LaBrie emphasized that organizations will benefit from fewer outages, improved performance, and simplified support through partners that unify multiple technologies into a single, managed experience. In this episode, Sarah LaBrie — writer, librettist, and author of the acclaimed memoir No One Gets to Fall Apart — speaks about navigating race, identity, and mental health on the page. She reflects on the responsibility of portraying these themes with honesty while ensuring multiple perspectives are heard. Sarah also opens up about the difficulty of writing deeply personal scenes, including her mother's breakdown and the multi-generational legacy of mental illness. With experience spanning libretti, television, and fiction, LaBrie explains how different forms have shaped her layered, musical narrative style. She shares what her early attempts at speculative fiction taught her about writing truth, and how the memoir's title captures the tension between chaos and resilience. Speaking to a global audience at the Sharjah International Book Fair, Sarah discusses what she hopes readers in the Arab world will take away from her journey of trauma, healing, and identity — and how literature can deepen cultural understanding. She also reveals the book she returns to for courage, and hints at what direction her next project may take. Dream Theater fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Parasomnia, the progressive metal icons' latest full-length album, and now that it's here, it's proving to be one of their most compelling releases in years. With the return of founding drummer Mike Portnoy and a fresh creative energy flowing through the band, Parasomnia not only marks a reunion but also signals an exciting new chapter in Dream Theater's storied career. On this episode of The Loaded Radio Podcast, host Scott Penfold sits down with Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie for an in-depth conversation about the making of Parasomnia, the themes behind its haunting and immersive sound, and what it was like having Portnoy back behind the kit after nearly a decade and a half. A Return to Familiar Ground with a Fresh Perspective Parasomnia, which arrived on February 7, 2025, via InsideOut Music, is the band's first release with Portnoy since 2009's Black Clouds & Silver Linings. The album, produced by guitarist John Petrucci and mixed by Andy Sneap, explores eerie and unsettling dream states, weaving together complex rhythms, intricate melodies, and soaring vocals. From the opening moments of In The Arms of Morpheus to the epic closer The Shadow Man Incident, the record is a journey through subconscious fears, sleep paralysis, and the bizarre world of dreams. Tracks like A Broken Man, Dead Asleep, Midnight Messiah, and Bend The Clock further build upon these themes, making for an album that's as cinematic as it is musically intricate. The first single, Night Terror, is a nearly ten-minute thrill ride that perfectly captures the essence of the record's dark undertones. Mike Portnoy's Return and Mike Mangini's Departure Of course, one of the biggest talking points surrounding Parasomnia is Mike Portnoy's return. After a 14-year absence, the founding drummer is back, and his chemistry with the band remains undeniable. But with that, Mike Mangini, who had been an integral part of the band since 2010, stepped away, making for an emotional transition. In this interview, LaBrie gives insight into how the band navigated that change, what it's been like having Portnoy's energy back in the studio, and how it's influencing the band's creative process moving forward. The Future of Dream Theater With Parasomnia now out in the world, what's next for Dream Theater? A massive tour is on the horizon, but beyond that, LaBrie teases what's in store for the band's evolving sound and future projects. Could this be the beginning of a new golden era for the progressive metal legends? Find out all that and more in this exclusive conversation with James LaBrie on The Loaded Radio Podcast. Sarah LaBrie, a successful television writer based in Los Angeles, narrates her gripping memoir of family trauma in a calm, sweet voice that keeps listeners engaged. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Michele Cobb discuss this deeply personal memoir that explores mental health and self-acceptance. Throughout LaBrie's childhood her mother ricocheted from one psychiatric episode to another, terrifying and caring ineptly for the girl. With hard work and luck, LaBrie made it to an Ivy League college. There, a Black woman in a predominantly white school, she encountered new challenges. When, at last, her mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia, LaBrie began to explore the family's history of mental illness and her own survival. A harrowing and engrossing listen. I had the privilege of chatting with Sarah Labrie to celebrate her debut memoir, No One Gets to Fall Apart. This book has garnered amazing reviews from the New York Times and Oprah Magazine and it is worthy of them all. It is open, honest and authentic to Labrie's voice. I loved having the opportunity to chat with her about her process and her story. We chat mental illness, adult friendship and persisting through life. While this book is tiny it packs a punch with thought and emotion.

Sarah LaBrie was in her early thirties when her mother was found on a highway outside Houston, screaming at passing cars and paranoid that she would be murdered by invisible assailants. She was ultimately diagnosed with schizophrenia—and in an instant, the entirety of LaBrie's childhood came into sharp focus. In her harrowing, clear-sighted, and painfully honest debut memoir, NO ONE GETS TO FALL APART (Publication Date: October 22, 2024; $27.99), LaBrie traces a year spent grappling with the enormity of her mother's diagnosis. With compassion and vulnerability, she reflects on the consequences of being raised by someone with mental illness, processes her own obsessive behavior and unhealthy ambition, and examines her fear of inheriting the disorder or passing it along to her own future children. In childhood, LaBrie's relationship with her mother is marked at turns by violence and all-consuming closeness. She's erratic, easily angered and cruel, but also loving and protective, committed to LaBrie's education and artistry and to making huge sacrifices as a single mom so her daughter could lead a stable life. Digging into the events that led to her psychotic break, LaBrie traces the line from the dysphoria that plagued her great-grandmother, a granddaughter of slaves, to her own experience with depression as a scholarship student at Brown. At the same time, she navigates a decades-long fixation on a novel she can't finish but can't abandon, her complicated feelings about her white partner, and a fraught friendship colored by betrayal. Spanning the globe from Houston's Third Ward to Paris to New York to Los Angeles, and touching on work by James Baldwin, Franz Kafka and Walter Benjamin, NO ONE GETS TO FALL APART is an unflinching chronicle of one woman's attempt to forge a new future by making sense of history. A writer from Houston, Sarah LaBrie's libretti have been performed at Walt Disney Concert Hall, and her fiction appears in Guernica, The Literary Review, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. She now lives in Los Angeles where she has written for television shows including Minx, Blindspotting, Made for Love, and Love, Victor. “In 2017, I learned from my grandmother that my mother had been experiencing schizophrenic delusions for months,” she explains. “We were estranged and no one told me, because no one thought it was a big deal. That same year, my best friend shared private information with the world that I wasn't ready to reveal, then ‘broke up with me' when I found myself unable to talk about it with her. I was working a job I hated while my friends all seemed to be coming into their own, and my partner, the son of prominent psychology professors from Boston, had grown up with a life so different from mine I didn't think he would ever understand. I started writing the book out of loneliness. I wanted to reconstruct all these broken parts into layers as opposed to puzzle pieces. I wanted to convey that there are many different ways to understand the past and how it makes us who we are.”

The Sound Chaser Progressive Rock Podcast is on the air. The show this time I am calling The Compilation Compilation. That is right, every piece of music on this show is selected from a compilation album. These would be such things as music label samplers, festival concert recordings, multi-artist tributes to bands, and charity-benefit cds. We will sort through compilations of the vinyl and cd eras, identify some of the types of compilation albums, and find a few obscure objets d'art along the way. It's an enjoyable journey through some surprising discoveries on Sound Chaser. Playlist1. Sarah & Shannon are no strangers to the music industry. Together they span decades of hard work, songwriting, touring, and perseverance. Shannon LaBrie's undeniable voice and musicianship have been described as “nothing short of breathtaking” by American Songwriter and NPR added her heroic anthem Firewalker to their Top 20 of 2020. Sarah Holbrook and her three sisters make up the genre-twisting spellbinding band SHEL with whom she wrote and performed for over 15 years. As a violinist and multi-instrumentalist she has earned her way onto stages with Amos Lee, Michelle Branch, Emmy Lou Harris and more. As a duo they span genres, coasting in and out of LaBrie's soulfulness and Holbrook's folk roots and unveiling a whole new phenomenon in the blend of their distinctive vocal tonalities and the arsenals of instruments they play. The “Folk Soul” duo is set to release their debut record in early 2025 and are headed out on tour with Maia Sharp and Bonnie Raitt in May of 2024. To keep up to date with their upcoming tours and releases follow them on Spotify and Instagram.
