Episode 22 - Linda Dumpe - Instagram, Social Media, & Mental Health

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 29, 2020 59:38

My guest today is Linda Dumpe. Linda is the founder of a hotel digital marketing agency geared towards presenting boutique hotels as a luxury experience and not just a hotel room. Drawing on her experiences as an Instagram influencer with over 50k followers, and as an active blogger, Linda has intimate knowledge of the digital marketing landscape and furnishes her clients with tactics that work for luxury boutique hotels. In this conversation we explore the mental health impact that living life through social media can have, and how the need to keep up with everyone and present an outward image of the perfect life can really take a toll on one’s wellbeing. We also explore the stresses associated with trying to launch a hotel marketing agency in the midst of a global pandemic, and some of Linda’s strategies for managing such a massive amount of uncertainty. This conversation approached mental health from a slightly different angle to the usual, but it was fascinating to explore the impacts of social media with someone who has been able to leverage the platforms in such a powerful way. Social media is ubiquitous, so it’s important to have a healthy relationship with it. Many thanks to Linda for sharing her story, so go ahead, and enjoy this conversation with Linda Dumpe.

Episode 21 - Joshua Shea - Porn Addiction

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 13, 2020 89:10

My guest today is Joshua Shea, and the subject of our conversation today is the addiction that no-one is talking about: porn-addiction. In 2010, Joshua seemingly had it all. A loving wife, two children, and a supportive extended family. After nearly fifteen years of working his way up the journalism ladder, he launched a lifestyle magazine in his hometown. Within a year, he was one of the founders of Central Maine's largest film festival and had won a seat on the City Council in Auburn, Maine.  While the public got one picture of Shea, behind closed doors, his longtime mental health and addiction issues were festering. A workaholic by nature, he actively ignored the red flags surrounding his long-existing pornography and alcohol problems. Finding it easier to lose himself in a bottle of tequila and adult websites, Shea's relationships with his family, colleagues, and friends grew distant. His business ventures began to collapse. Life as he knew it came to a screeching halt when he was arrested on a charge of underage pornography possession in 2014. Shea was convicted and served six months in jail in early 2016. Following his arrest, he sought help and treatment through intense one-on-one therapy, group therapy, and inpatient rehab facilities. In this conversation, we explore the profound impact both pornography and alcoholism had on Joshua’s life, and how something which is viewed as relatively commonplace nowadays has the potential to turn into something incredibly damaging if left unchecked. This is by far the most candid conversation I’ve had about a subject that can be a little sensitive, and the perspectives and insights that are shared in it will surprise you.

My guest today is Dr. Robb Kelly PhD. Robb Kelly, Ph.D. is a world-renowned addiction expert who believes in treating the problem, not the symptoms. He has worked for many years helping addicts and alcoholics to RECOVER their lives from the disease of addiction. Based on his own experiences working with addicts and alcoholics over the last 20 years, combined with a Ph.D. in psychology, and as a recovered alcoholic himself – he is a triple threat against the disease of addiction. Dr. Kelly’s philosophy may seem unconventional and unorthodox. But, they are based on extensive research and behavior studies that he conducted over the last 20 years. He pulls the disease out of his clients and empowers them to fight their disease head-on. In this conversation, we dig into Robb’s own experience with alcoholism, and the profound impact it had on his life, leading from Oxford university to a park bench in Manchester, England, shivering in the cold in a near-death experience. We explore the habits and routines that Robb has built into his own life to ensure that he stays on the road to recovery, and his ideas around how the stories we tell ourselves, and how much we buy into those stories, will ultimately decide the direction of our life. This conversation was so much fun, covering topics as diverse as freemasonry, recording with Elton John at abbey road studios, and struggling with imposter syndrome. It was an absolute pleasure to have Dr. Kelly on, and I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did!

He came to China as an architect and martial artist in 2004, but over time transitioned to be one of the leading thinkers and practitioners of natural human movement in China, connecting mind, body and environment. Oki is one of the first 18 people in the world to become MovNat Level 3 certified and has been a strong advocate of movement-with-purpose all his life. After specializing for over 30 years in martial arts including Judo, Fencing, Baimei Quan, Wingchun, Sanda, Kendo and Capoeira, Oki realized all specialization leads to injuries and has since been studying with people like Erwan LeCorre, Ido Portal, and Thomas Myers and connecting holistic training to prehab-rehab, forming his own philosophy called MovOr. With the profound understanding that we need to be human first, a mover second and as specialist last, MovOr is a movement practice that promotes injury resistance, forms a strong base for specialized sports and is an excellent way to recuperate from the tolls that repetition puts on our body. MovOrs strive not to be neither sub-human or super-human. Rather they try to be Simply Human: move in ways that are practical, expressive and playful without the need to be, or look like, Superman. Oki believes that when given the right space, movement development in children can help them be more balanced human beings, physically as well as mentally. As such, he is dedicated to creating an environment for kids to develop and grow as the Chief Learning Officer at Yinglets.
