Meet Greg Nance   Greg Nance grew up in Kitsap and is on a mission to pay it forward for the next generation of Kitsap kids. He is a youth mentor, distance runner, and nonprofit leader recognized by President Obama. Greg grew up in a middle class union family on Bainbridge Island and worked as a landscaper, house painter, and firewood splitter. The son of a social worker and public defender, Greg learned the value of hard work and community service around the dinner table. His Mom spent over 20 years as a nursing home social worker ensuring seniors across Kitsap have access to quality care and are treated with dignity. His Dad was a Seattle Seahawks beer vendor before helping unionize the Seattle Public Defender to ensure everyone, including the poor and marginalized, are provided effective legal representation as guaranteed by our constitution. He grew up idolizing his grandfathers: Grandpa Charlie, a Marine who fought at Iwo Jima; and Grandpa Kick, a Navy Seabee who fought at Okinawa. WWII cut both their educations short so they stressed the gift of public education and the importance of lifelong learning. Greg attended Kitsap K-12 public schools and graduated from Bainbridge High. He played baseball, basketball, and football across the peninsula and excelled in track and debate. During his senior year at BHS, he was the 3A Washington State Debate Champion and proudly represented Team USA as 1 of 5 All-American debaters at the 2007 World Championships in Seoul, South Korea. Following competition, Greg loved telling debaters from Pakistan, Scotland, and Japan about the peninsula west of Seattle that he was lucky to call home.     Congressman Jay Inslee nominated Greg to the United States Military Academy at West Point in December 2006, but he decided to attend UChicago after earning a scholarship. He was elected Student Government President at UChicago and was named Washington State's 2010 Harry S Truman Scholar — the Presidential Memorial to Public Service. In 2011 he earned a full ride to Cambridge University where he studied Management and innovation as a Gates Scholar. Despite early successes, Greg also struggled. Following the loss of his beloved Grandpa Charlie, Greg battled depression and began self-medicating with alcohol at age 16. He tried to quit drinking a hundred times before finally getting sober on December 29, 2011. Now sober for over 4300 days, Greg loves sharing lessons learned while working to help young people build resilience and compassion. Greg recently completed a 3,156 mile run from the Atlantic to the Pacific for youth mental health (read the Seattle Times recap). He is the CEO of Run Far Foundation, a nonprofit building youth resilience coast-to-coast. He founded Dyad Mentorship and Moneythink, organizations that helped students earn over $27 million in university scholarships. President Obama recognized Moneythink as a “Champion of Change” at the White House on March 15, 2012. He has been working to protect Puget Sound since 1995. His 6th grade science class raised and released salmon eggs (the chum salmon now returning from the Pacific are 7th generation). He represents Kitsap on the Citizens Advisory Group for the Hood Canal Coordinating Council, our region's Lead Entity on salmon recovery. He is working to mobilize the next generation of environmentalists to save our salmon and protect Puget Sound. Greg is a frequent speaker at Kitsap public schools because he loves inspiring kids with adventure stories like running 7 marathons in 7 days on 7 continents. He became the first person to ever run 86 miles — and climb 14,410ft. — from Puget Sound to the summit of Mt. Rainier. Greg's running career peaked in 2016 when his beloved Seattle Seahawks named him “12 Ambassador” and featured his ultrarunning in TV commercials (watch here). Greg now proudly represents Kitsap as State Rep — he's working for working families, like the one he grew up in. Let's work together to Fix our Ferries, Protect Puget Sound, and fully fund public schools so the next generation of Kitsap kids can grow up happy and healthy!

Athletes are ‘In The Hunt’ if they have not yet raced in 2021 but have a strong 2019/2020 points average and are in a position to potentially qualify once they have raced in 2021. This includes athletes who have been on maternity leave and to qualify for The Collins Cup would need to race at least once in 2021. Team USA Highlights Sam Long is the new Team USA #1 as a result of scoring 102.33 points at St George putting him over 1 point ahead of the next closest USA man - Rudy von Berg.  Rookie Sophie Watts is Team USA #4 as a result of 85.96 and 85.81 points finishes at Texas and St George respectively. Team Internationals Highlights Jeanni Metzler moves to Team Internationals #3, pushing Sarah Crowley and Ellie Salthousedown to #4 and #5 respectively meaning Ellie loses her position as an automatic qualifier. Jackson Laundry’s 94.24 point result in St George rockets him up to #8 amongst a tightly pack of International men with just under 5 points separating #3 Sam Appleton down to #8 Jackson. Team Europe Highlights Emma Pallant-Browne moves to Team Europe #5 having scored 100.88 points in St George to give her an average of 93.00 points when combined with her 2019/2020 points. Magnus Ditlev moves to Team Europe #3 ahead of George Goodwin #4 with Alistair Brownlee 'In The Hunt' as he is yet to race in 2021. U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM QUALIFICATION ON THE LINE AT WORLD TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES YOKOHAMA U.S. Olympic hopeful triathletes will have a chance to punch their tickets to Tokyo at this week’s World Triathlon Championship Series event in Yokohama, Japan, which serves as the second and final auto-qualifier for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team. In addition to the elite race, a World Paratriathlon Championship Series event is also scheduled. All races are set for Saturday, May 15, in Japan, which is late Friday night, May 14, for most of the United States. All events will be broadcast live at TriathlonLIVE.tv; monthly and annual subscriptions are available for purchase. The races will also be streamed live on FloTrack with a subscription. The World Paratriathlon Championship Series event kicks off the action at 5:50 p.m. ET on May 14/6:50 a.m. local time on May 15 (the paratriathlon race is not an auto-qualifier for the U.S. Paralympic Team). The elite women follow at 9:16 p.m. ET on May 14/10:16 a.m. local time on May 15, and the elite men are scheduled for 12:06 a.m. ET on May 15/1:06 p.m. local time on May 15. In Yokohama, elite athletes will cover an Olympic-distance course featuring a 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike and 1-kilometer run centered around Yamashita Park and the Port of Yokohama. Elite paratriathletes will race a sprint-distance course with a 750m swim, 20k bike and 5k run.   Olympic Qualification The U.S. will send a maximum of three women and three men to the Tokyo Olympic Games for triathlon. Summer Rappaport (Thornton, Colo.) is the only athlete currently qualified for the U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team, by way of her fifth-place finish at the Tokyo ITU Olympic Qualification Event in August 2019. Because Rappaport is already qualified, only one woman can qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team in Yokohama. Since no men have qualified to date, up to two men can punch their ticket to Tokyo by way of a qualifying performance in Yokohama. After Yokohama, all remaining spots will be selected via discretion by the USA Triathlon Games Athlete Selection Committee. In Yokohama, athletes can auto-qualify for the U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team in the following scenarios: In the women’s race, the first U.S. athlete finishing on the podium, who has not already qualified for the team, will earn automatic selection. (E.g., only one U.S. woman can auto-qualify at this event, and she must be on the podium). Because no U.S. men were auto-selected from the 2019 ITU World Olympic Qualification Event, the highest-placed U.S. man finishing within the top-eight overall will be selected to the team. Two men may be selected to the team at Yokohama, in the event that both men finish on the podium. In the days following Yokohama, the USA Triathlon Games Athlete Selection Committee may, but is not required to, issue a limited number of “early discretionary nominations” on or before May 20, 2021. Any remaining slots not filled at one of the two auto-selection events, and not named as “early discretionary nominations,” will be issued via final nomination to the team by the USA Triathlon Games Athletes Selection Committee after June 15, 2021. Click here for a complete explanation of the qualification process for the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Triathlon Teams. U.S. Athletes to Watch The U.S. women bring a strong contingent to Yokohama, led by the trio who swept the podium at the 2019 Yokohama race — Katie Zaferes (gold), Rappaport (silver) and Taylor Spivey (bronze). Headlining the women’s start list is Zaferes (Cary, N.C.), the 2019 World Triathlon champion and 2016 U.S. Olympian. Zaferes had a breakout season in 2019, winning five of eight races in the World Triathlon Series and earning silver in a fifth. She crashed out of the 2019 Tokyo test event, missing her first chance at Olympic auto-qualification, but she went on to capture the world title in Lausanne, Switzerland, two weeks later. Zaferes also reached the overall World Triathlon Series podium in 2018 (silver) and 2017 (bronze). Spivey (Redondo Beach, Calif.) holds the No. 2 spot on the start list. She was just off the overall World Triathlon Series podium in 2019, placing fourth in the season-long standings. Spivey led the U.S. women at the 2020 World Triathlon Championship in Hamburg, Germany, with a fourth-place finish. Rappaport will compete in Yokohama at No. 3 on the start list, though her spot in Tokyo is already secure. The four-time World Triathlon Series medalist and eight-time World Triathlon Cup champion had a comeback season in 2019, placing a career-best fifth in the overall World Triathlon Series standings.   Also set to compete for the U.S. women are Taylor Knibb (Washington, D.C.) and Tamara Gorman (Rapid City, S.D.), two of only three women in World Triathlon history to have won individual world titles at both the Junior and Under-23 levels. Kirsten Kasper (North Andover, Mass.), a nine-time World Cup medalist who placed fourth overall in the 2018 World Triathlon Series, and Renée Tomlin (Ocean City, N.J.), a 10-time World Cup medalist, will also toe the line. Click here for the complete women’s start list. On the men’s side, Morgan Pearson (Boulder, Colo.) and Matt McElroy (Huntington Beach, Calif.) are No. 19 and 20 on the start list, respectively. McElroy is a nine-time World Cup medalist who became the first U.S. man in a decade to podium in a World Triathlon Series race in 2019 when he took silver in Leeds, England. Pearson is relatively new to the sport, having made his elite debut in 2018. The two-time World Cup medalist led all U.S. men at the 2020 World Championships in Hamburg, placing eighth. Chasing a second Olympic appearance is Ben Kanute (Geneva, Ill.), a 2016 U.S. Olympian and two-time World Cup medalist with a career-best World Triathlon Series finish of seventh. Also racing for the U.S. men are Eli Hemming (Kiowa, Colo.), a four-time World Cup medalist and eight-time Continental Cup medalist, and Kevin McDowell (Geneva, Ill.), the 2015 Pan American Games silver medalist and seven-time World Cup medalist. Click here for the complete men’s start list. I kept walking wondering how the pilot got there as I knew it was a remote area. As I meandered I saw an old set of stairs. So I climbed them and emerged on a hard packed single track trail hugging the cliff high above. I walked, a little cautiously, and suddenly I saw a bike perched on the ledge and a man unpacking a paraglider. Turns out it was a motobecan e-bike and the man rides here with his paraglider, unpacks it, ditches the bike in the bushes and flies for hours above the ocean—depending on the winds. He told me he once climbed to 7,000 feet off the coast of Carpentria about 40 miles southeast of here. But the point is, he rode his bike. Here surfers ride their bikes to find uncrowded surf and deserted beaches, often on e-bikes. So many people seem to bike here to do something else. It made me think of Colorado and some opportunities we have to bike and recreate. Fishing and Waterton canyon came to mind. Waterton Canyon was built in the late 1870’s as a railroad (of course) that connected Denver to south park and beyond. Companies competed for mining freight and thus railroads carved out beds in most of the canyons we now ride or drive. Rail service stopped in 1937 and the tracks were ripped up in the 1940’s as scrap metal for the war. In 1983, Denver Water constructed the 200 foot Strontia Springs dam and what remained was a very smooth gravel access road closed to cars, but open to bikes and pedestrians. A parking lot at the mouth of the canyon gives access to this 6.5 mile road that ends just passed the dam. Where the road ends, the Colorado Trail begins and ends 486 miles later in Durango (550 by bike). If you travel east from this parking lot you can access the beginning of the High Line Canal. Overall the road gains 650 feet in elevation making it a gentle grade.   Bill & Rich's Excellent [Endurance] Adventure Bill Major Taylor Rich Matt Emmet did his Metabolic Efficiency Treadmill Assessment. The Collins Cup Explainer video explains how the qualification process works, how the teams are selected, the history behind The Collins Cup and builds excitement for the head-to-head battles we can expect to see in August.  When writing about the PTO or The Collins Cup please include the following link for updates about The Collins Cup https://signup.thecollinscup.com/. My guest today is Greg Nance. Greg is the CEO of dyad.com, an educational access platform providing mentorship for the motivated, and a brooks running sponsored ultra marathon runner. He’s a graduate of the Cambridge University Judge school of business, a serial entrepreneur, and a recipient of the White House Champion of change award from Barrack Obama for his work with his first startup, providing financial mentorship to under privileged students across America. Greg recently completed the world marathon challenge, running 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days, and has since switched his attention to setting fastest known times all over the world. The FKT project involves picking 2 points on a map, and running between them. Greg recently set the FKT for running between Pudong Airport and Hongqiao Aiport in Shanghai. In this episode we explore exactly what it’s like to run 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days, to receive a call from Barrack Obama to say you’ve been recognised for an award, and the power of mentorship. Mentorship has been, and continues to be, a hugely positive influence on Greg’s life. We touch on the influence some of those mentors had in Greg's journey, and the impact of the loss of those mentors. I hope you enjoy this episode! BRINK OF GREATNESS

Addiction comes in all forms. Psychology Today, defines it as a condition in which a person engages in the use of a substance or in a behavior for which the rewarding effects provide a compelling incentive to repeatedly pursue the behavior despite detrimental consequences. Greg Nance found himself is such a place for seven long years. As he explains, there were weekends where he would engage with thirty to forty drinks. He became the life of the party⏤except it was no party! In Greg's words he explains the start of a life-chapter that changed everything. "My grandfather Charlie Nance (Marine at Iwo Jima and an incredible man who lived with us growing up and inspired me daily) had a debilitating stroke and soon passed away. One moment he’s the rock of the family the next he’s a shell of himself then gone. At 16 I didn’t know how to process the immense pain and confusion and hurt. The only escape was alcohol and I began a 7-year struggle." After a series of accidents and terrible mishaps, Greg realized that at 23 he needed to do something and he needed to do it fast. The something was to quit drinking and as he tells it later in the story⏤this would become his biggest accomplishment in life. Greg Nance transformed his life in remarkable style! He has jogged 49 countries and run some of the toughest footraces on the planet. Highlights include running the UK coast-to-coast, 124 miles thru the Malaysian highlands, and 100 miles across the Philippine jungle. In 2015 he was profiled in Adventure World Magazine for finishing the 250KM Gobi March with a sprained knee nonetheless. But his all-time favorite was running 155 miles with Dad thru Chile's Atacama Desert, the world's driest, and crossing the finish line together! Truly Amazing, but it doesn't end there... Greg has just become part of a special elite club if you will⏤think of it in these terms, more people have gone into outer-space than completed this feat: 7 Marathons in 7 Days on 7 Continents. Beginning with 26.2 miles in Antarctica, he then ran back-to-back marathons in Cape Town, Perth, Dubai, Madrid, Santiago, and Miami! The story continues on the Brink of Greatness Podcast… The Next Leap Forward Considering Greg's success with running and marathons⏤he still places quitting drinking as the top accomplishment in his life⏤that is a clear affirmation of not only the dangers of drinking, but what that meant to his life. This should be a wake-call for all of us. The road to recovery is seldom straight: Relapse, or recurrence of substance use, is common—but definitely not the end of the road. For those who achieve remission of the disorder for five years, scientists report, the likelihood of relapse is no greater than that among the general population, reports Psychology Today. There are plenty of myths and misconceptions about addiction, but in reality, the processes that give rise to addictive behavior resist a simplistic explanation. There is not just one cause: Although genetic or other biological factors contribute to a person’s vulnerability to the condition, many social, psychological, and environmental factors have a powerful influence on substance use. In this episode of the Tech in Shanghai podcast, I speak with one of Shanghai’s most switched-on and inspiring young entrepreneurs, and CEO of Dyad, Mr. Greg Nance. Dyad is an online, mentorship-based, university admissions preparatory service, and Greg is it’s founder and fearless leader. If you want to dramatically increase your chances of getting into the University and/or program of you choice, be sure to check out Dyad. As for Greg, he’s not really that impressive at all…of course, I’m kidding. Greg is a rare bird, in the best way possible. Sharp as a tack, brimming with confidence, passion, and enthusiasm, Greg is one of those people who after speaking with him, you feel an energy, a charge and an optimism to go out and make stuff happen! As intelligent as Greg is, he also has another common attribute with many of the great entrepreneurs..grit. Call it determination, stubbornness, un-wavering belief, or straight up masochism, Greg is a fighter, who anticipates hardship, and conditions himself for it in advance.   We delve into this concept of ‘building resilience’ in our chat. We also discuss his approach to decision-making, on daily tasks, but also on how, in a world of opportunity, to choose where to place your focus, or more simply, what to fully ‘commit’ to. Dyad has also gone through a round of Venture funding, and Greg had some exceptional, must-hear advice on pitching, handling rejection, and in reference to the whole fundraising process,  ‘starting before you start’. Oh yeah, Greg also runs ultra-marathons, sometimes in the desert..why? Well apart from being a huge believer in the primary importance of physical health and fitness (Side note: The Dyad team does whole-office workouts together), Greg believes pushing oneself physically is integral in building that mental toughness that pays so many dividends as an entrepreneur. Of course we go into lots of practical tips, the morning routine Greg follows to set up his day, the importance in keeping in touch with friends and family (some advice that I desperately needed to hear) and much more. Finally, in the high-stress, emotional roller-coaster life that is entrepreneurship, Greg offers a simple piece of advice, which is. “Do something every day that has no other purpose but to make you smile”. This was one of my favourites, enjoy!
