In this flashback episode, we're not just talking the talk; we're taking a deep dive into personal struggles both therapists and clients face, challenging the stigma around seeking mental health care and embracing our vulnerabilities.I talk with Sandtrice Russell as she opens up about the need for safe spaces and advocacy, particularly for the BIPOC & LGBTQIA+ communities.3 key themes:Vulnerability as a Bridge: Therapists' self-disclosure and openness about personal struggles can build rapport and trust, making it easier for clients to open up and be vulnerable in turn.Authenticity in Practice: Showcasing your true values and creating an accepting space for clients of all backgrounds, including LGBTQIA2+, Neurodivergent, and BIPOC individuals, is not just good practice—it's essential for safety and relatability. The Human Connection: Therapy is more than a checklist; it's about actual authentic human connection and openness to change. We must prioritize the rapport and right fit in the therapist-client relationship.Note from Sandtrice:I've been in the helping profession since 2004. I've been working in my respective field for over 18 years. I graduated with my Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from the University of West Georgia in 2004 and later obtained my Master of Science Degree in Clinical Mental Health from Troy State University in 2012. Is it Mental Health or Demonic Strongholds? (Ft. Dr. Natalie Atwell)

What if your mental health struggles had deeper, spiritual causes? Everyone knows how to handle their physical health — exercise and a balanced diet, for example. Modern healthcare also covers mental health, giving us more insights into how to safeguard our thoughts and emotions. But sometimes the roots of our health problems are neither physical nor mental. Things like occult influences, spiritual oppression and demonic strongholds unknowingly could bring spiritual health under attack. This could lead to demonization, depression, gender confusion and suicidal ideation. In this episode of the Revelations Podcast, we're joined by Dr. Natalie Atwell, a seasoned mental health practitioner and passionate advocate for integrating biblical truths into mental health care. With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Atwell shares her journey from overcoming personal challenges like childhood trauma and physical disabilities to becoming a voice in the mental health field. Her insights bridge the gap between mental and spiritual health, offering a unique perspective on how the spiritual and psychological realms intersect. This conversation is a must-listen for anyone grappling with mental health challenges, whether for themselves or their loved ones. It's especially valuable for Christian parents seeking to navigate the mental health landscape for their children. Here are three reasons why you should listen to this episode:Discover an in-depth understanding of the connection between mental and spiritual health and how our identity in Christ is so important to live as an image bearer of God.Learn how spiritual oppression by dark forces could lead to anxiety, sleep paralysis, suicidal ideation and dissociation.Hear Dr Atwell's opinion on how technology affects the mental health of our youth, particularly when it comes to anxiety and depression.Become Part of Our Mission! But thanks to medical technology, she was able to overcome it.[06:14] Natalie: “I went from not walking the first two years of my life to being able to complete a marathon. That's a miracle.”Concord Counseling, which is Dr. Atwell's practice, believes in integrating biblical teachings with mental health care.Part of her work involves developing tools and assessments to address both psychological and spiritual challenges to mental and spiritual health.[11:24] Rising Spiritual Warfare in Mental HealthPost-2020, Dr. Atwell noticed a sharp increase in spiritual oppression linked to mental health, particularly dissociation, sleep paralysis, and suicidal ideation.Dr. Atwell developed a test to identify occult influences that might be affecting her clients' mental and spiritual health.Discerning spiritual influences alongside psychological factors is a core part of Dr. Atwell's methodology.Dr. Atwell is concerned about the rise of occult practices, being used in therapy. She warns against non-Christian influences in mainstream mental health treatments.According to Dr. Atwell, non-Christian practices in mental health services could open the gateway to dark forces that seek to harm your spiritual health.[23:30] The Divine Council WorldviewThe Divine Council worldview lets you approach Scripture using a supernatural lens.According to this perspective, there is a council that rules over the universe. Conversely, the rebels are the Enemy and fallen angels. [25:20] Natalie: “Being human is special, and I don't know that we talk about it enough, but being an imager of God is so important, and it is our identity that we were called to represent him on earth and to have dominion.” Natalie believes all sexual perversions stem from fallen angels mating with human women.Demonic forces attack your identity and the concept of you as an image of God.[31:21] The Role of Parents in Spiritual ProtectionParents play a central role in protecting their children from dark powers. Dr. Atwell advises parents to harness the power of prayer. She also stresses the importance of teaching children about spiritual warfare and their identity in Christ.Parents should closely monitor their children's exposure to technology and social media. The power of scripture and the divine influences children's spiritual health.[35:45] Impact of Technology and Social Media on YouthDr. Atwell links rising anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation in youth to social media use. Unmonitored technology tends to have a negative effect on children's mental health.Technology is often a gateway to exposure to dark spiritual influences, even unintentionally.Gender confusion is often a result of children having access to more sources of information and learning, giving them alternative perspectives.[47:56] The Importance of Ephesians 6 in Spiritual WarfareEphesians 6 discusses the armor of God, and as such is a central part of spiritual warfare. It has since become a central verse to Dr. Atwell's approach.Donning the armor of God can help people protect themselves from spiritual attacks and safeguards spiritual health.A critical element to remember about Ephesians 6 is the importance of fighting not against flesh, but against spiritual forces. The armor of God also includes tools like the helmet of salvation, shield of faith, and sword of the Spirit.[50:44] Deliverance and Mental Health TreatmentDr. Atwell has developed a treatment model based on biblical principles for spiritual deliverance. The model focuses on renouncing spiritual influences, confessing sins, and reclaiming identity in Christ.[51:17] Natalie: “I am a human, an imager of God, and that is my call and plan and purpose in life.”Dr. Atwell advocates for spiritual freedom through the power of the Holy Spirit and God's word.About NatalieDr. Natalie Atwell is a licensed mental health expert with over 20 years of experience, specializing in the intersection of mental health and spirituality. She is the owner and clinical director of a private counseling practice in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she leads a team of 20 professionals. When we feel stuck or overwhelmed by society, how can we find joy and courage?Steven Tierney asks us to challenge the notion that we are stuck with no way out. He emphasizes that rather than avoid the difficult, we can find a way through by embracing Buddhist teachings and practices. This can include:Living with Intention:Drawing from Victor Frankl and Thich Nhat Hanh, he underscores the importance of embodying the teachings and living with intention.Joy and Bliss in Buddhist Practice:He examines the concept of the "jhanas" or advanced meditative states that lead to joy and bliss, cautioning against quick fixes or commercialized paths to spiritual fulfillment.Investigation and Self-Understanding:Emphasizing the importance of self-investigation (Dharma Vaya), Steven discusses how understanding our true selves, beyond societal expectations or prohibitions, is crucial for personal growth and finding joy.The Role of Courage:He also highlights the role of courage in living authentically and taking action in the world. Steven connects courage to joy, suggesting that joy naturally arises from deep self-understanding, while courage is needed to express this joy in the face of external challenges.Moving Through Pain:He encourages us to face pain fully, without becoming a victim of it, and move through it as a path to deeper understanding.______________Steven Tierney (Kai Po Koshin) is a Dharma transmitted teacher in the lineage of Suzuki Roshi. Roughly 68 million people bet on Super Bowl LVIII this year, amounting to more than $23 billion. In 2023, the American gambling industry generated more than $65 billion in revenue. These numbers surpass the economies of many small countries. In the United States, gambling – particularly sports betting – is here to stay and it is EVERYWHERE. In this week's episode, I brought in an expert with his own gambling war chest to discuss this social-cultural explosion. Brian Dolan is an Addiction Specialist and an advocate for recovery. He's an impassioned individual with personal triumphs over gambling and substance use disorders. With a Master's in Clinical Mental Health and 6 years of experience managing Collegiate Recovery Programs, Brian is tapped into gambling's mainstream rise, particularly among our youth, in a way most aren't. We discuss the pitfalls of gambling, how to identify a gambling problem, the risk on our youth, the complicity of policy makers and Big Business players ready to cash in, and the reality that gambling, once relegated to the underbelly of American society, is a cash cow of social problems one click away. I hope you enjoy this discussion about a critical issue whose darker side demands more attention in our national dialogue. Thank You and Keep Going. Join host Elaine Starling in this empowering conversation as she and therapist and healer, Demarra West, explore the path to abundance, the importance of self-love, and the transformative power of choice. Gain insights that will inspire you to embrace personal growth, release limiting beliefs, and step into a life of abundant joy and peace. Drawing from her own journey of healing from complex trauma, Demarra emphasizes the importance of facing our traumas and integrating them into our lives to find genuine liberation and lasting joy. Highlights 01:15 Kurt introduces the guest and topic of abuse. 03:45 Background of the article from the Associated Press dated August 4th, 2022. The article claims that the Church is hiding abuse. 06:00 Jennifer explains the Church's helpline. 07:00 What is mandated reporting? There are three versions. You must report, no exceptions. You must report but the exceptions are clergy or medical reasons. You may not report. You need to know the laws in your particular state. 9:00 The helpline is there to protect the bishop and the victim. Reporting in each state is very different. 10:30 Kurt breaks down the different kinds of reporting and how complicated it can be in different states. 12:15 Jennifer and Kurt discuss the Arizona case on abuse and the bishop's involvement. There is still so much we don't know. 19:30 The biggest question most of us have is why the Church's attorney on the helpline didn't have the bishop call the police. 22:10 What can we learn from this case of abuse? 23:20 Is the helpline a good idea? 27:00 Kurt and Jennifer discuss whether the Church's hotline should be led by attorneys or social workers and what the role each of these professionals play. 30:15 Background checks catch very few abusers. It only catches people that have been convicted. The background check system can't be fully trusted. 34:00 What can we do to better protect our youth? We can't rely on just one tool. A background check is one tool but not completely reliable. There are many pieces to the pie. 37:10 Another tool that can be used is listening to the kids. You have to be careful with this though. 39:10 When kids reveal abuse it's normally unintentional. Most children won't say outright that they are being abused but leaders and adults should pay attention to the small comments that seem off. 41:15 Statistically most child abuse doesn't happen on a church campus but grooming does. Jennifer shares tactics that abusers use. 42:45 Parents should be very careful with whom they trust. Sleepovers should not be happening. 43:55 It's difficult to identify abusers very accurately. However, it's a little bit easier to accurately identify kids that are being abused. Jennifer shares some things to look out for. 47:00 During the pandemic more kids were abused because they were at home more. Home is the most likely place that kids are getting abused. There is no for sure way to make sure that a kid doesn't get abused. 48:15 We are saving and protecting way more potential victims than those that are getting victimized. While we don't have a perfect system, it's also not fair to say that our system is completely broken. 49:30 What does the Church gain by protecting abusers? 50:45 One of the protective factors for kids in our church is that people change callings all the time. It's different from other churches where the pastor is abusing kids for 40 years. 51:50 While we can respect the writer of the AP article, there are some things that he did get wrong. For example, there is no evidence that indicates that the Church covered up any evidence. 53:40 The article implies that hiding abuse is the norm. The main message that people are getting is that the Church hides abuse on the regular. Can you believe we are at the final episode for S4? On this week's episode, we're talking about the idea of fighting fair. We all have a memory in the back of our minds of an argument that got way out of hand, and only to look back and realize how silly it was in the first place. But that's what happens when we allow our emotions to get ahead of the true objective in a disagreement and that is understanding and a possible solution. Claudeen Seal (@modelforchrist) is pursuing a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health. She is married with three kids. She decided to pursue her Master's in Clinical Mental health because of her own family history of mental illness. She's learned that in order to change our world; we must learn to better ourselves, build healthy relationships within our families, communities, and in our country. The best way to do that is to walk the walk and not just talk about it as believers in Jesus Christ. Hence, Model for Christ was formed to live out her journey as a believer and to encourage others as we run this race called life. You are worthy. You are blessed. You are loved.™️
