In this episode of Equine Assisted World, Rupert Isaacson sits down with Mary Wanless, a pioneer in the field of rider biomechanics. For decades, Mary has been at the forefront of reshaping how we understand equestrian training by focusing on the physics and physiology of riding. With a background in physics and a deep curiosity about what truly makes a great rider, Mary has worked to demystify the biomechanics of effective riding. Her methods help riders of all levels develop a clearer understanding of their own bodies and how they interact with their horses.Mary shares her insights into postural restoration, neurology in riding, the importance of feedback loops in instruction, and the crucial role of feel in equestrian training. This episode is packed with wisdom that will transform the way you approach riding and teaching. What You'll Learn in This Episode:The Science of Rider Biomechanics (Starts at 02:20)How Mary's background in physics shaped her approach to riding. Why traditional riding instruction often fails to communicate the "how."Understanding postural restoration and its impact on riding: https://www.posturalrestoration.com/Understanding the Neurology of Riding (Starts at 16:10)The significant neurological connection between the hands and the brain—and why this leads riders to overuse their hands. The lack of neurological connection between the pelvis and the brain and how that affects balance and control. How the body's fascial system (as explored in Anatomy Trains by Thomas Myers) influences rider biomechanics: https://amzn.to/4ibrGgNBridging the Gap Between Language and Experience (Starts at 36:27)How to verbalize the unspoken "feel" of great riding. The importance of the student-teacher feedback loop. The challenges of translating elite rider intuition into teachable concepts. The Core Foundations of Effective Riding (Starts at 56:10)How to align your body for maximum effectiveness. Why bearing down and breathing correctly is fundamental. The importance of allowing the foot to rest rather than pressing. The Role of Flow in Riding (Starts at 1:14:22)Flow state as the key to riding success. The connection between flow and joy.Why elite riders unconsciously access flow—and how you can, too.Training Tools and Resources for Riders (Starts at 1:36:27)The Balloon Breathing Exercise and how it creates quietness in the mind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDbm8LxfzaIDeveloping feel through systematic, science-based methods. How groundwork supports better biomechanics under saddle.Memorable Moments from the Episode:The revelation that "feel" can be taught (12:03).Why cutting out the student-teacher feedback loop is detrimental to learning (45:36).The connection between breathing, bearing down, and core stability (1:04:00).A deep dive into why postural restoration matters for every rider (1:42:38).The surprising realization that joy is a subset of flow, and flow is the key to great riding (1:44:17).Connect with Mary Wanless:

Have you ever played “practitioner ping pong,” a term I coined while listening to Rick describe our current medical industry's approach to treating pain? Or perhaps you're in pain right now? Maybe you just want to understand the mechanics behind “manspreading;” why dudes tend to sit with their legs wide, often encroaching upon others' personal space? Then this episode of The Nourishment Mindset is definitely for you!Meet Rick Olderman, farm boy turned healer who joins me on today's episode to discuss how to leave your chronic pain in the dust. As someone who has healed from chronic ankle, hip and neck pain and spent over 120 hours with physical therapists, this topic is near and dear to my heart. In addition to being a physical therapist, Rick is the Founder of the Fixing You Method, a sought after practitioner trainer and the author of a number of books including his new Solving the Pain Puzzle. Rick teaches us an important albeit tough love concept by saying, “I am the source of my pain.” While this may at first sound like blaming the victim, it is a powerful statement because it means we hold the power to heal ourselves! He introduces us to his theory of pain, challenging traditional component thinking where our systems are separated and divided, and instead focuses on the “human super highway” — fascia, our connective tissue network. Rick's framework for pain evaluation is called The Three Pillars of Pain, reflecting the complex interplay between the biomechanics of our musculoskeletal system, our psychological state and our environment, which includes factors like nutrition, lifestyle, allergens, etc. These pillars reflect why my neck and hip pain likely originated in my rigid ankles, and on a broader note, explains why psychological trauma can worsen and even create physical pain.Tune in and let me know what you think and share any questions or show ideas you may have! And then hop on over to Amazon and buy a copy of The Nourishment Mindset. Listen in as Lara and Rick geek out on muscle and joint movement and discuss how your systems are connected, some of what they describe may surprise you.Come back for Part II of this conversation, where Lara and Rick discuss the emotional connection to chronic pain.In this episode, you'll learn:How Olderman's systems-based approach to pain led him to discover that many common chronic pain issues are actually caused by habits and movement patterns which are reinforced by our everyday activities.Techniques on how to test yourself for pain and poor movement, along with small adjustments you can make that work to relieve chronic pain. How to connect the dots between old injuries and/or emotional trauma with current chronic pain.Resources:Rick Olderman's Website featuring downloadable home programs (add “fixingyou” as a coupon code to receive 20% off) - https://rickolderman.com/Rick's Fixing You® series of books - https://www.amazon.com/s?k=rick+olderman+booksPre-order Rick's next book “Solving the Pain Puzzle” - https://mcfarlandbooks.com/product/Solving-the-Pain-Puzzle/Rick's Podcast “Talk About Pain" - https://rickn6.podbean.com/Shirley Sahrmann's Books - https://www.amazon.com/s?k=shirley+sahrmann&sprefix=shirley+sa%2Caps%2C95&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_1_10Thomas Myer's Books -https://www.amazon.com/Thomas-Myers/e/B08N2S15BN?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_7&qid=1670348645&sr=8-7Thomas Hanna's Books - https://www.amazon.com/Thomas-Hanna/e/B001IGNOC6?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1&qid=1670344567&sr=1-1Connect with the Guest:Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/FixingYouMethodConnect with LYT Daily and Lara Heimann:Instagram Lara Heimann - https://www.instagram.com/lara.heimann/Instagram LYT Yoga - https://www.instagram.com/lytyogamethod/Today's podcast sponsor:Almond Cow. Our guest today is Deanna Hansen. She is a Certified Athletic Therapist and founder of Fluid Isometrics™ and Block Therapy™, a bodywork practice that is meditation, exercise and therapy all in one. Deanna began her practice as an Athletic Therapist in 1995, always focusing on deep tissue work. She built up a thriving practice, as her strong hands could work out the deep knots in tissue. Unfortunately, as successful as her business was, Deanna's physical health and mental wellbeing were eluding her. In 2000, Deanna experienced a major breakthrough. Her large, heavy body stored much pain and she felt weighed down and depressed. While experiencing the worst of a series of anxiety attacks, Deanna intuitively pushed her hand into her abdomen and, at that moment, began a path of self-discovery. In this week's episode of Form, Function, and Flow Lab, I talked about the connection between the pelvic floor to your feet and jaw. The pelvic floor is actually broadly connected to many parts of your body and I wanted to share how sometimes, we treat other areas of your body that are not even anywhere near the pelvic floor but have a direct correlation with it. I talked about how Anatomy Trains by Thomas Myers helped me understand how the pelvic floor is connected to our feet and our jaw so I decided to share it with you, too! In this episode we discuss: [00:36] Introduction to the topic [1:14] What are Anatomy Trains [2:22] How the pelvic floor is connected to your feet [6:23] How the pelvic floor is connected to your jaw [9:00] Conclusion If you have any questions, you can drop it in the comment section or you can send me a message through Facebook or Instagram. Our guest Shay Merritt Hughes, is the owner of Merritt Clinical Wellness in Apex, North Carolina.   Her business is unique, as is her personal journey.  Merritt Clinical Wellness is an evidenced-based rehabilitation and injury prevention practice. Its focus is on the soft tissue realignment of the body through the pelvis.  Bringing oneself back into alignment not only reduces pain, but it can help one move more freely and balanced.  Known as a“realignment therapist,” Shay has helped those who have been injured or recovering from surgery, get back in shape—even after others told them it couldn't be done.  She says was born to do this work, by uniquely combining therapeutic massage with bodywork. Shay trained with renowned bodyworker Thomas Myers, author of Anatomy Trains: Myofascial Meridians for Manual and Movement. He has also produced more than 20 online learning courses based on Anatomy Trains and collaborates with various body-oriented professional groups. Thomas and his faculty conduct professional development courses and certification in Structural Integration worldwide. Today, Shay is also bravely joining us with a purpose beyond promoting her business--To share her story of how she reclaimed her worthiness after a suicide attempt at age 26.  With so much going on in the world today, and some believing we may even have a new pandemic of mental health challenges, Shay felt compelled to share, to help someone else who may find themselves in a dark place in their lives. She now lives on a farm in North Carolina as a newlywed with her “very understanding husband,” 3 horses, a donkey, and 4 kittens.  She recently started a non-profit, “The Purrs A Lot of Society,” for rescuing, rehabilitating, and then “re-homing” kittens.INTRO:Gail/Host: Shay, first of all, I want to thank you for your enormous courage in coming forth to share the story of your attempted suicide in your 20s—and the inspiring ways you have reclaimed your worthiness to live. Now at age 42, you have much wisdom and perspective from that journey.  And before we hear all the gems, can you please bring us back to that “desperate” day when you tried to take your life? Shay: At 26, I was at a very dark place in life, lower than ever, “felt damaged,” without hope of getting better.  I felt I had no value, no worthiness in the world...it was a culmination of things, abusive childhood.  Then the weekend after New Year's Eve 16 years ago, “the darkness engulfed me.”  I was full of darkness and despair. What was the trigger that set you off? SHAY:  My ex-boyfriend and I had a nasty fight, and it was the straw that broke the camel's back ... I was away from home, in a state where I didn't know a lot of people, no secure friendships...when you add all these things together, it effects your mental health in a way that you feel like you're in a bottle and you can't get out.  I took pills, went to ER, and my boyfriend carried a lot of guilt, but my suicide attempt was based on multiple years of problems of being born to 2 parents who didn't want me...I knew from a young age that they didn't want me. ...That day was the start of something really good for me...I had to have that day for the good to come to me later."I make it a point now to tell those in my life, including my animals, that they are safe, they are wanted and they are loved."How did your suicide attempt transform your life? SHAY: "The first year after was tough.  There is no quick rebound--it's like being in recovery for the rest of your life... for two years, in that moment when I remembered that day, I wanted to go home, by home, I mean, I wanted to go to heaven....That first year the challenge was I was still in a dark cloud, not a dark space, but a dark cloud.  I had to forgive myself and I had to claim I was worthy enough to go on and that I survived for a reason.  God wasn't done with me yet.” What advice do you have for others in a dark place, contemplating suicide? Talk to somebody NOT RELATED TO YOU.Go to a safe place, and if you don't have one, you can contact me.YOU DESERVE THAT, TO BE HEARD.  Make an effort to find that light. You're worth it.  You're worth saving.  You're worth surviving. You can't thrive if you don't survive.Take it one day at a time, and one step at a time. “Sometimes good things come from a dark place." ~Shay Merritt Hughes "For me, there were tough decisions after that...I started changing, been with my boyfriend since I was 19...unhappy for last 2 years...stayed with him because I thought I should...then it clicked...NO, I should take care of me, and came home to North Carolina from Texas...I moved in with a girlfriend...went to school, trained as vet tech, then aesthetician, and rolled into massage when things really fell into place.” “I feel like I became the person God always wanted me to be.” At 34/35,  got her first job, 7 months in her career, I was trying to help a client with a particular issue and found this guy on YouTube—Thomas Myers (which was DIVINE INTERVENTION, according to Shay). Thomas is a renowned bodyworker. Shay ended up training with him, and resonated immediately with his style of bodywork...no nonsense...it works...consistently effective. GAIL:  Do you work with mostly with the injured?  SHAY: “Yes, everybody's been injured.”  From 8 years to 106 years old, I have no niche market.  Any other thoughts on helping someone claim their worthiness to live as you did? “God always has a plan.  You might not see it right now, but if you end it today, you will never see it.” “I decided I was worth saving, and not only did I survive, but I went on and thrived.” “It didn't end at surviving, and it doesn't end at thriving.  It ends when the sun is setting in the ocean, and I am a long way from the beach, darling.”Shay most wants listeners to remember this is:  "You don't HAVE to do it alone...there's nothing that says you have to be alone for the rest of your life, and you have to relive your past.  You don't.  Every day is a new day, and even if you make the smallest step today to talk to someone, that is step one." To learn more about Shay's therapeutic clinical massage business, check out her website, https://merrittclinicalwellness.com/ To learn more about her non-profit, “The Purrs A Lot Society,” for rescuing, rehabilitating, and then “re-homing” kittens, check out the

Corey Mordowski, “The KetoRucker”, joins The Fatty Joe Show today to share his unique brand of fitness.   Corey ventures away from the hallowed halls of the gym and instead partakes in an activity called “rucking”, which is basically walking with a weighted pack on for time and distance.  Corey is a physical therapy assistant by trade and is currently working on a doctorate in holistic health.  He is an expert in functional movement as well as healing the body.Corey got into rucking for his own fitness and now works to share his passion for this fitness lifestyle to others.  He even got your ever-loving host Yogi into it.  Corey's day job is Physical Therapist Assistant, but his passion is health optimization, personal development, nutrition, and physical activity. When he first began his ketogenic journey Corey weighed over 300 pounds. At five foot nine inches tall Corey was what the Body Mass Index called Morbidly Obese. This label haunted Corey every time he would go to his physician's office for his annual physical, or when he would get the occasional sinus infection or random other ailment that he could not soldier through without the aid of a prescription.Over the years Corey tried many diets. Some would work for a time, but then the weight would come screaming back plus some extra. He tried Paleo, counted calories, juiced, and even went full vegan for a stretch of two to three years. Corey discovered keto, and thought “what do I have to lose?” So he began eating a ketogenic diet. At first it was nothing fancy, just lots of meat, eggs, heavy cream, butter, and cream cheese. Then something extraordinary happened; he lost weight. Not only did Corey lose weight, but he also did not feel like he was starving. Soon after Corey noticed skin conditions disappearing, aches and pains just evaporating, and his energy returning.⭐️To follow Corey Modrowski, check out the links below:

It's easy to think about injury from a medical point of view and focus on what is broken. But you can also view it from a performance point of view: what type of plan will take the athlete is at point A to point B. Donie Fox is both a physiotherapist and athletic development coach. He joins this week's podcast to discuss his thoughts on rehabilitation, including assessment, variation, shapes, and more. DD Palmer was way ahead of his time. In his 1914 book, The Chiropractor, published by his wife after his passing, he coins the phrase : Neuroskeleton. This is so much like the concepts brought out by recent authors like Thomas Myers in his Anatomy Trains and Guimberteau's Architecture of Human Living Fascia. We are WAY more connected than what most anatomy textbooks discuss.

Blog post accompanying this episode: https://hittingperformancelab.com/improving-pro-hitter-from-75-mph-ball-exit-speed-to-85-mph-in-one-hour/ James Ernest from The Grueling Truth recently interviewed me on his sports podcast episode, “Sports of All Sorts: Joey Myers Author of “The Catapult Loading System” Baseball Hitting Book”. Thanks again James for having me on! (PLEASE NOTE: the audio isn't quite the best on my end, since he was interviewing me over the phone.) I've included time-stamps below, so you can freely navigate through the audio interview…ENJOY! At about 0:10 second mark, James asked me to tell him about the Catapult Loading System (CLS) book, working on the second edition of the book now and new additions to it. At about 2:40 minute mark, what the Hitting Performance Lab is all about, applying human movement principles validated by REAL science, to hitting a ball, Anatomy Trains by Thomas Myers, The Spinal Engine by Dr. Serge Gracovetsky, Dynamic Body by Dr. Erik Dalton. Base system off higher standard: REAL science, not “bro-science”, data (experiments, stats, etc.) and technology (Zepp, SwingTracker, BlastMotion, HitTrax) are great to measure, test, re-measure. At about 6:30 minute mark, James asked what the difference between hitting “philosophy” versus hitting “principles”, talk about bowling “bumper” analogy, “Theories” are okay but MUST have a REAL science to back them up, is body-weight a good indicator of batted ball distance? Are athletic “freaks” the only ones who can triple their body-weight in batted ball distance? At about 10:30 minute mark, James asked me to clarify “body loading”, is the body just a rubber band system? The difference between compression and tension forces and springy fascia, what is fascia and why the secret to consistent power is found in it. How an elite hitter loads these compression and tension forces, the Springy ‘X' Pattern, and the Goldilocks Golden Rule, how to match the plane of the pitch, not teaching hitters to hit “pop-flies” or ground-balls. At about 15:30 minute mark, James asked how we teach the Springy ‘X' Pattern to younger hitters, ‘Showing Numbers' and “back eye test“, using back elbow for Downhill Shoulder Angle, to get the ‘Scap Row' we use “hiding their hands from pitcher” cue, “Finger Pressure”, the “Hollow” or “Hunched Position“, head positioning and following the “One-Joint Rule“, At about 21:00 minute mark, James asked who taught or supported me in this information? Where learning this originated from, self taught, started from trying to fix a chronic knee tightness, reverse engineered the swing through human movement principles validated by science, Aaron Judge and Sierra Romero as great models for an effective swing. At about 24:00 minute mark, follow up question on the difference between first and second edition of the CLS book, the path to finding the truth to consistency in the swing, how the tens of thousands of coaches reading and applying the principles are getting the same results – if not better – with their hitters that I am with mine! How we improved free agent Professional hitter recently using a wood bat off Backspin Tee, 75-mph Ball Exit Speed to 85-mph in one hour. At about 28-minute mark, where can people learn more about what we're doing here at Hitting Performance Lab? Dr. Garrett Kuhlman, DC, CCSP is a sports chiropractor that has a clinic called Elite Movement Chiropractic Clinic. Dr. Garrett Kuhlman talks to your host Blake Bowman about techniques for rehab, the body from a holistic standpoint, various exercises to improve movement, and common misconceptions about chiropractic procedures and the contributors to chronic pain.    Episode Highlights:  Dr. Garrett Kuhlman talks about his experience in strength, conditional, and as a sports chiropractor.  Garrett Kuhlman explains fascial lines to understand movements as documented by Thomas Myers.  Your body will compensate until it can’t.  What is the superficial backline?  What techniques does Kuhlman utilize for rehab?  Lymph follows a lot of the Chinese meridians and acupuncture points.    The body is a holistic system of systems.   What are the most common dysfunctions that Dr. Garrett Kuhlman comes across in people that are wrecking their movement patterns or contributing to their pain?  What is “The Bird Dog” exercise?  Just because you have a ripped six-pack doesn’t mean you have a strong core.    Keep variety in your exercises and movement patterns.   What are his thoughts on anti-rotation exercises?  Unfortunately, we tend to only focus on working out the muscles that we can see from a vanity perspective.   Running is powerful because we have these spiral lines and it takes some of the work off the muscle and places it on the fascial lines.  What is Garrett Kuhlman’s problem with traditional chiromatic manipulations?  More strength resilience education is needed in the medical field.  When you can no longer do the things that you love is when you truly become old.  Healthcare is a proactive process, not just a passive process.  The exit to treatment is strengthening.    3 Key Points: Fascial lines are lines of connective tissue that run throughout the body. They are found through dissection cadaver dissections. There are seven different lines that have been found to run through the body.   For knee pain look at the ankle and the hip. For lower back pain look at glutes and the thoracic spine. It is always the muscles and joints above and below the joint where the pain is.    The Spiral Line starts up in the shoulder on the backside and rotates down across your core down to the front side of your legs and the backside as well. Rotation is where we create power.   Tweetable Quotes: “I’m a sports chiropractor. I focus a lot on functional movement, rehab, basically, all things movement is what I try to work with my patients on. My original background was strength and conditioning.” - Garrett Kuhlman “I’m a chiropractor. But I do a lot of PT rehab and functional movement and corrective exercise. I just find that, that is really powerful when linked with the chiropractic side of things.” - Garrett Kuhlman “Where you feel the pain is not necessarily where you have the problem. And I think our medical system, and to a degree are rehab system, are focused on the area that hurts” - Garrett Kuhlman “Your brain will compensate, and so if there is an injury to the peck or there is chronic groin strains or something like that. Your brain will look further up or down that line to try and compensate for that.” - Garrett Kuhlman (Trauma pain) “It turns chronic because they have these dysfunctional patterns in place that won’t let the initial tissue heal.” - Garrett Kuhlman (The Bird Dog exercise) “You are on all-fours and you extend, say, the right leg and left arm at the same time. I will attach a band to the wall above your head.and you just pull at the same time you extend your leg.” - Garrett Kuhlman   Resources Mentioned: GuerrillaZen.com Get Complete Essentials at BSLNutritionshop.com Guerrilla Zen Fitness YouTube: YouTube Dr. Garrett Kuhlman: Linkedin  Instagram  Elite Movement Chiropractic Clinic: petoskeymovementchiro.com Book: Anatomy Trains by Thomas W. My guest today is Oki Alexander. As the founder of MovOr Oki specializes in only one thing: being Simply Human. And it turns out to be damn hard! He came to China as an architect and martial artist in 2004, but over time transitioned to be one of the leading thinkers and practitioners of natural human movement in China, connecting mind, body and environment. Oki is one of the first 18 people in the world to become MovNat Level 3 certified and has been a strong advocate of movement-with-purpose all his life. After specializing for over 30 years in martial arts including Judo, Fencing, Baimei Quan, Wingchun, Sanda, Kendo and Capoeira, Oki realized all specialization leads to injuries and has since been studying with people like Erwan LeCorre, Ido Portal, and Thomas Myers and connecting holistic training to prehab-rehab, forming his own philosophy called MovOr. With the profound understanding that we need to be human first, a mover second and as specialist last, MovOr is a movement practice that promotes injury resistance, forms a strong base for specialized sports and is an excellent way to recuperate from the tolls that repetition puts on our body. MovOrs strive not to be neither sub-human or super-human. Rather they try to be Simply Human: move in ways that are practical, expressive and playful without the need to be, or look like, Superman. Oki believes that when given the right space, movement development in children can help them be more balanced human beings, physically as well as mentally. As such, he is dedicated to creating an environment for kids to develop and grow as the Chief Learning Officer at Yinglets.

When muscles contract they produce the forces that move the body; fascia is the connective that transmits and distributes those forces to help the body move. Fascia is an integral component of how your body moves, yet it is often overlooked in traditional exercise programs and could be the cause of the chronic pain or soreness you feel after a workout. No, this podcast is NOT becoming All About Fascia, but when you get the opportunity to speak with Sue Hitzmann, a founding member of the Fascia Research Society and author of 2 books about how to properly take care of your fascia, it's important to give her the microphone so she can help you understand what might be causing that nagging pain that you have to deal with every time you exercise. Sue Hitzmann is the creator of the MELT Method and the author of The MELT Method - a book describing the role of fascia in movement and how to perform proper self-care to reduce the risk of injury. Sue has recently released MELT Performance, a follow-up book that provides more detail on how you should care for you body so that you can participate in your favorite activities well into the later years of the aging process.  On this episode we discuss common mistakes that could cause pain and some simple movement strategies that could help you avoid it. Courtney’s exposure to biomechanics and rehabilitative exercise started in her early childhood, as an elite level gymnast, kayaker, and ballet dancer. At age 16, she left home to pursue her professional career with The Houston Ballet, where she remained for 5 years until a severe ankle injury forced her to retire.  After retirement, she transitioned immediately into a two-year course of study in rehabilitative exercise and Pilates, under the supervision of nationally renowned Pilates instructors Bryan Peters and James Harren, who had trained with the original colleague of Joseph Pilates himself. She then earned her certification through the Pilates Method Alliance and became a top-rated trainer for the following 6 years.  Following the birth of her first child, however, she began to suffer from injuries related to pregnancy and childbirth, none of which her prior core training was able to resolve. This realization led her to study with Thomas Myers, Yamuna Zake, Esther Gokhale, and Stuart McGill, all prominent leaders in the field of spine health and pelvic stabilization.  From there, Courtney became certified as a personal trainer through National Academy of Sports Medicine and soon after was granted their advanced certification as a Corrective Exercise Specialist. She also carries a Prenatal and Postpartum specialization from NASM and multiple certifications in pelvic rehabilitation, injury prevention, and activated release therapy. Her unique method as taught in MommaStrong is the product of this comprehensive background, helping mothers all over the world finely tone their body’s through clinically approved, and feasible workouts that instigate an adventurous life through strength that matters. Additionally, Courtney has a BA from Lesley College in Social Change and the Arts and is currently embarking on a designation as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor To Learn More and Connect with Momma Strong: http://www.mommastrong.com/ https://www.facebook.com/mommastrong/
