We're here each week to bring you the internet's funniest movie analysis and criticism. A podcast dedicated to bringing you films you know, films you don't, and films you may wish you didn't. Join Kevin, Sobie, and Apryl every Monday as we hand out awards, answer questions, and generally dig way too…
IT'S A WONDERFUL PODCAST we have for you this week, as special guest Drew Choiniere aka @BigTallDrew (go follow him on Twitter!) joins us to talk about the best Christmas movie of all time, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE! We discuss Mr. Potter's terrible 1%er jokes, Mary "Relationship Goals" Hatch, and much, much more! Check it out and let us know your thoughts!
WE'RE BACK with THE ILLUSIONIST, aka the other 2006 film about magicians. Neil Burger (Limitless, Interview with an Assassin) directs and Eddie Norton stars as Eisenheim the Illusionist in this perfectly decent film that's highlighted by Philip Glass's excellent score. Paul Giamatti and Jessica Biel both do a great job co-starring, and we've got trivia, awards and jokes! Check out the show!
We've actually got a good movie this week as we talk about Denis Villenueve's 2015 sleeper hit: SICARIO. Starring Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, and Daniel Kaluuya, it's a thrilling, creepy, action-packed adventure on both sides of the border as a ambiguously-placed government agent and his mysterious associate take FBI Agent Kate Macer WAY over her head on a mission to cause some chaos in the Juarez drug cartels. Emily Blunt delivers and Oscar-Nominated performance, and Benicio Del Toro is amazing in this 2015 sleeper-hit!
We've got a weird one for you this week, as we're covering Tim Burton's 1996 MARS ATTACKS! Starring Jack Nicholson (twice!), Glenn Close, Natalie Portman, Michael J Fox, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jack Black, Annette Benning and many more, this cast has waaaay too many huge names for such a ridiculous movie. BUT HEY LET'S DO IT! Martians attack earth with superior ships, superior weapons, and hilarious speedos while hapless humans (sometimes) try to defend their planet. A truly entertaining watch and we've got a great episode on it.
This week we're talking David Fincher's classic film SE7EN starring Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, and not nearly enough Gwyneth Paltrow! Morgan Freeman is retiring, but before he can hand over the reigns to hotshot detective Brad Pitt, he has to help hunt down religiously obsessed serial killer Kevin Spacey! Everyone is having a rough week in this one, but Fincher delivers a great movie in the gritty way only Fincher can. Jump in those comments and let us know your thought on the movie, the podcast, or whatever, and then ship your head over to iTunes to rate and review!
IS THAT TOM HANKS' MUSIC I HEAR???? We're talking the 1989 cult classic horror/comedy THE 'BURBS! Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher are a normal suburban couple, but their neighbors are creepy, and their other neighbors are assholes. Bruce Dern, Corey Feldman, and Rick Ducommun costar in this very funny yet somehow very bad suburban comedy. Check it out!
We've got a special Halloween episode, talking John Carpenter's classic HALLOWEEN! Michael Myers goes on a rampage, killing several terrible teenagers and utterly failing to get Jamie Lee Curtis in this genre-inspiring horror film! A small-budget, independent film, Carpenter created a film that would inspire an entire genre of slasher and teen-slaughtering films for decades to come. Join us as we explore the filmmaking, as well as important questions like "Who was Annie's weed dealer?" and "Why are all of Laurie's friends awful?" Check out the episode, and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
We continue our October horror month with Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg's 2004 zombie parody SHAUN OF THE DEAD! Join us as we fail to understand British culture while still appreciating their humo(u)r. We dish out awards like best death, creepiest scene, and the award for the character who gets dunked on the most! Sobie breaks down trivia about the film and we discover that Apryl may or may not hate comedy in general! Click the link and comment with your thoughts!
We've got a special episode with Kevin and Apryl talking THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, the 2018 Netflix adaptation of Shirley Jackson's classic horror novel! This show has been trending all over the internet lately, and since Sobie couldn't make it, we're switching it up! WE'RE BACK for another week of SMASHFILM! This week we're talking James Wan's INSIDIOUS, A jump-scare riddled mess of a plot that somehow manages to be a great watch. Featuring Rose Byrne, Patrick Wilson, Barbara Hershey, and the kid from Iron Man 3, all delivering perfectly adequate performances, highlighted by incredibly creepy visuals, in-your-face score, and a twist ending that was apparently good enough to spawn THREE sequels! Listen for awards, our thoughts, and all the trivia we could dig up!
It's still October, which means we're still on horror films! This week we're doing the 2012 horror (plus comedy?) film The Cabin In The Woods! Centered on five friends who visit... well you know. Plus a mysterious organization manipulating events to a gruesome finish. Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford shine in the supporting cast. The end reveal is out there, the effects are solid, and there are plenty of scares and laughs in it. Check out our show and let us know your thoughts!
We're kicking off our October Horror Month with the 2016 hit movie THE VVITCH! Anya Taylor-Joy's breakout role, the movie is centered around a puritan settler family living on the edge of an ominous wilderness. When their infant son disappears, things get WEIRD and not in a good way. Join us as we ask the important questions and give our breakdown!
We're talking the excellent 2005 satire THANK YOU FOR SMOKING! This comedic masterpiece (directed by Jason Reitman) is a classic and everyone should watch it. Following lead spokesman for the Big Tobacco lobby Nick Naylor, the stacked cast and subtle humor come together perfectly. Starring Aaron Eckhart, Maria Bellow, JK Simmons, David Koechner, Kim Dickins, William H Macy, Rob Lowe, Robert Duvall, Adam Brody AND MORE.
Join us as we talk David Fincher's 2014 adaptation GONE GIRL starring Ben Affleck, Rosemund Pike, Tyler Perry, Carrie Coon, and Niel Patrick Harris! It's possibly the most dysfunctional marriage in history, along with a murder mystery and a thriller element as Fincher's cinematography and Trent Reznor's score crank the tension up to 11.
In honor of the passing of the legendary Burt Reynolds, we're talking BOOGIE NIGHTS! This film is incredibly well-endowed with great actors, including Don Cheadle, Julianne Moore, John C Reilly, Heather Graham, and more! It's the story of young, extremely 'talented' porn actor Dirk Diggler! Don't miss it!
That's right we're talking the 1996 MASTERPIECE of junk-science, TWISTER! Starring Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, Cary Elwes, and Philip Seymour Hoffman! So come chase the storm with us as we break down this cinematic... well you get the idea.
We're talking the 2009 film ADVENTURELAND! There's a lot of Kristen Stewart hate in this episode as we take on one of the most awkward comedies of all time. Featuring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Reynolds and Martin Starr, we had very mixed feelings about this one.
Welcome to another episode of SMASHFILM! The best film criticism comedy podcast on the web! We're on the first Apryl's-choice episode, and we're talking the 2007 psychological thriller Mr. Brooks, starring Kevin Costner, Demi Moore, William Hurt, Dane Cook, and Danielle Panabaker.
