Welcome to #FANuary, where we talk about the movies you, the listener, asked us to discuss. Our first entry in #FANuary is 1987's TAX ATTACK 87, a Learning Corporation of America production staring comedian Robert Klein (SNL). Learning Corporation of America was owned by New World Pictures and focused on educational videos like In the FOR SAFETY'S SAKE: IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD starring Gary Coleman. By the way, if you haven't listened to our episode on that video, do yourself a favor and check it out. TAX ATTACK 87 is meant to be an instructional video for how to complete your annual taxes using the new laws that were introduced in 1986. It's equal parts educational video and live action children's board game. Given that children don't file taxes and adults don't typically need board games to learn, it's anyone's guess who the target audience is for this little slice of New World Pictures americana. We leave no stone unturned looking for deductions and credits in TAX ATTACK 87. Why is Robert Klein arguing with a off-screen IRS agent? Ryan has a solid theory. Erica gets immediately bored when Marc explains how to play craps. Ryan shares a story about going to comedy traffic school with his mom. Erica sings a banger of an opening song. Both Ryan and Marc share familial memories of watching the America's Cup when it was held in San Diego. This, of course, bores Erica even more. We even make a sneaky Twin Peaks reference even though we couldn't have anticipated the passing of David Lynch (RIP) only a couple days after the recording. Seriously though, Dune is one of Marc's favorite movies and he thinks its way better than the Denis Villenueve version.
Join us as we invite our old friend Brad to help us investigate Denis Villeneuve's labyrinthine thriller Prisoners, a Thanksgiving flick that gets us wondering, where was Hugh Jackman's character on January 6th? Other points of discussion are Thanksgiving films, the star studded cast, favorite actors that perpetually get beat the hell up, our oddest pets, and of course that ENDING.

Blade Runner 2049, the long in the works sequel to Ridley Scott's sci fi classic, was a critical hit whose box office never quite lived up to its ambitious budget. But, here in the season 3 premiere of the CineFix Top 100, Clint, Cal and Alex talk about whether the film ever had a chance to make money, the incredible accident that made the original Blade Runner a classic, how hard Harrison Ford is trying in the film and whether or not Denis Villenueve is actually the Christopher Nolan we deserve. Meanwhile, Dan's algorithm is learning how to feel finger to finger. Interlinked. CineFix Top 100 was created by Clint Gage and Dan Parkhurst and is produced by Tayo Oyekan, with Director of Photography, Jamie Parslow and Technical Producer, Marhyan Franzen. On the twenty- seventh episode of ATFT, director/ 1st AC Manny Plaza- Fernandez joins me in discussing the collaborations between Denis Villeneuve and Jake Gyllenhaal… more specifically, the films Enemy (2013) and Prisoners (2013). This episode is spoiler filled with a few expletives. The two collaborations between director Denis Villeneuve and actor Jake Gyllenhaal were released in 2013. Enemy may have been made first but Prisoners was released first. Villeneuve regarded Enemy as his “practice film” as it was his first English- language film. Even though both Prisoners and Enemy are collaborations between Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal, they are very different films. Enemy is more of an art film that sparks seemingly infinite interpretations. Gyllenhaal carries that film as he plays two characters and besides him, there are very few other characters in the film. Prisoners, on the other hand, is a crime thriller with an ensemble cast that includes, aside from Gyllenhaal, Hugh Jackman, Viola Davis, Paul Dano, and Melissa Leo. While Prisoners is a film that also requires analysis, it is more straight- forward than Enemy. Both films are brilliant and do share similarities in from technical aspects. These two films prove that Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal are excellent, underrated collaborators who will hopefully continue to work together in the future. This is Manny's first appearance on ATFT! Manny and I met on the set of the upcoming short film, Time Will Tell, last November. There was only one production day in November before resuming in February but after striking up a conversation on that one day in November, it was clear Manny was incredibly knowledgeable about film. He was one of the first people on the crew I befriended and, after telling him a little bit about my podcast, he definitely wanted to make a guest appearance. Ever since, we talked about a few potential topic ideas and this topic proved to be a great first episode. This episode was recorded on August 7, 2024. Manny is an Orlando- based 1st AC who has been working in the film industry for three years. He has just recently added the “director” title to his name! Manny's directorial debut, the horror short film titled The Autopsy, is expected to premiere this September at OIF! Be sure you keep listening until the end of the episode to learn more about The Autopsy, his first experience in the director's chair, and when you can expect to watch this film! In this episode, Manny and I analyze both Enemy and Prisoners while (mostly) focusing on the direction of Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal's brilliant and sometimes incredibly subtle acting choices. Manny also shares how he became a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, his interpretation of Enemy (including the symbolism behind the spiders), and why he says Prisoners captures and evokes every emotion. The female actors of 'Blade Runner 2049' are a huge part of the brilliance of Denis Villenueve's 2017 sequel to Ridley Scott's 'Blade Runner'. They bring to life such wonderfully complicated, original, genre-bending, emotionally resonant, funny, and strong characters. In this special episode of the podcast, I take a look at all of the scenes featuring the incredible actors who brought the characters of Luv, Joi, Madam, and Dr. Stelline to life: Sylvia Hoeks, Ana de Armas, Carla Juri, and Robin Wright.

This week Mary Hicks and Margari Hill drop in to talk all things DUNE. We focus on Dune Part 2 but also talk about the historical influences on Frank Herbert as he wrote Dune, along with how Dune influenced the science fiction and fantasy that came afterward. We talk about the parallels between the fictional universe and historical events, such as the Ottoman Empire and the interactions between European powers and Indigenous communities. We also get into the portrayal of whiteness in the film and the complexities of women's roles and agency within the narrative. We dive into the egalitarianism in the Fremen world and the infiltration of outside values. The depiction of female spirituality and the complexity of women characters are discussed. The casting and representation in the film, particularly in relation to Middle Eastern culture, are examined. Mary and Margari also touch on the historical resonances and sensitivity in the film. The difference between a cautionary tale and a hopeful vision is explored. This conversation is one of the best we've ever had on this podcast and I hope you like it.About our guests:Mary Hicks is a historian of the Black Atlantic, with a focus on transnational histories of race, slavery, capitalism, migration and the making of the early modern world. Her first book, Captive Cosmopolitans: Black Mariners and the World of South Atlantic Slavery, 1721-1835, reimagines the history of Portuguese exploration, colonization and oceanic commerce from the perspective of enslaved and freed black seamen laboring in the transatlantic slave trade. As the Atlantic world's first subaltern cosmopolitans, black mariners, she argues, were integral in forging a unique commercial culture that linked the politics, economies and people of Salvador da Bahia with those of the Bight of Benin.Margari Hill is the co-founder and Executive Director of Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative (MuslimARC), a human rights education organization. She is also a freelance writer published in How We Fight White Supremacy (2018) Time, Huffington Post, and Al Jazeera English. Vocalo resident film critic Reggie “The Reel Critic” Ponder called the film “a heroic tale worthy of the big-screen experience,” pointing out that, while Chalamet commands the screen, the actors surrounding him (especially Zendaya and Rebecca Ferguson) truly make the film stand out. ‘Dune: Part Two' is in theaters now. In DUNE: PART 2, Paul (Timothee Chalamet) is advised to climb the tallest dune before every hunt to obtain the best possible vantage point. It reflects director Denis Villenueve's approach to the sequel: Expand the story's gaze; Throw Greig Fraser (director of photography) at some BREATHTAKING vistas; Fill said massive frame with an army-sized cast of Hollywood's best perfomers; Print money.Villeneuve, like Babe Ruth, called his shot (high fastball over the plate, meet the rafters behind left-center field) against whichever studio executive(s) have yet to greenlight DUNE: MESSIAH. Normally, I'm not so quick to demand sequels before their first parts have premiered, but...have you SEEN this thing? What, are you people allergic to success?DUNE: PART 2 has received comparisons to the like of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and THE TWO TOWERS, the latter being my push. At 10 years old, that film sucked me into the intricacies of a world with such enticement, such detail that I almost couldn't handle it. DUNE: PART 2 pushes beyond its prequel's "hero's journey" to deliver a thrilling parable on the dangers of fanaticism and the evils permitted through the seduction of different forms of power, including hopeful, inspirational narratives themselves.I joke to never underestimate the rizz of a fluffy-haired white boy, but given how my thoughts have progressed after the screening, I can't help but think Villeneuve's casting of Chalamet as Paul Atreides is eerily prescient. He'll charm the hell out of one's daughters and leaders, but to what end? At that end, will those daughters and leaders be better for following?Warner Bros., quit fucking around and greenlight this trilogy already. --- Follow Daniel on Twitter: @TheMovies_Pod Music: "Living Is a Problem Because Everything Dies" - Biffy Clyro --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/themoviespodcast/message

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes Warner Bros has officially delayed Dune: Part 2 until next year, scheduled to release March 15, 2024. The move is unsurprising, given the ongoing, concurrent Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but no less disappointing for Dune diehards. The hotly anticipated sequel took Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's original release date, shifting that film back by a month. The animated feature The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim was also delayed about 8 months moving from April 12, 2024 to Dec. 13, 2024. It's not all doom and gloom for Dune fans though, as director Denis Villenueve teased a possible third installment for the series. In more disappointing news (and the cause of the aforementioned delays), just 2 weeks removed from what seemed to be the most promising progress made since the Writers strike began, negotiations between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), have reached a complete standstill. Both parties have publicly slammed each other in the last week, with sources from each indicating there are currently no discussions for a return to the negotiating table. Marvel Studios has released a trailer for “Marvel Studios: The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline” a new coffee table book that serves as an official guide to the MCU timeline. The 344 page book contains exclusive infographics, timelines, and stills that aims to be the go-to resource for fans and filmmakers who are hoping to connect the dots and truly understand the web of interconnections between the different Marvel Studios movies and streaming series. It will deconstruct every moment” from the 15-year history of the MCU and covers everything from the first film with 2008's “Iron Man,” to the upcoming second season of the Disney+ series “Loki” and is available for pre-order, releasing on October 24th. Barbie has officially passed the Super Mario Brothers Movie to become the highest grossing film in North America of 2023. Adult Swim animated series Rick and Morty will officially begin its 7th season on Sunday, October 15th. The new season will also be available to stream on Max and Hulu in its entirety sometime in 2024. Gran Turismo took the number one spot at the domestic box office this weekend with a muted $17.3 million dollar outing. Blue Beetle took third place behind Barbie with a $12.8 million dollar take domestically, a drop of nearly 50%. Arleen Sorkin, the original voice of Harley Quinn from Batman: The Animated Series, has passed away at the age of 67. Disney+ is not moving forward with The Spiderwick Chronicles, its live action series adaptation of the popular children's fantasy books. The 8 episode series from Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television has been completed and is currently being shopped by Paramount to other potential buyers. Disney+ has also decided not to stream Nautilus, a big budget prequel to Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Disney says that it is working to find a new home for Nautilus. “Killers of the Flower Moon” will hit theaters October 20, with a streaming debut on Apple TV Plus to follow at an undetermined date. This pivots from a previously-announced limited rollout set for October 6. Ridley Scott Has a ‘Fantastic' Cut of ‘Napoleon' That Runs Four-and-a-Half Hours and Features Way More Joséphine
