Rich Elwood was a Vancouver radio personality, actor, stand-up comedian and comedy club owner. His comedy career started doing Bill Cosby routines in front of his Grade 7 class and he polished his act in Toronto's notorious Yonge Street strip clubs. "They were a good training ground," he told the Vancouver Sun's Lee Bacchus, "You would have about 200 guys out there all yelling 'Bring out the broads!' You had to be good or you'd be doing the last 10 minutes to heckles and boos." Rich says, "Doing standup was always a blast. However, bands typically didn't care for standup warmups. In one case, the last thing they said to me before going on was 'Keep it short and don't touch our equipment.' I was only going to do five minutes and would not need to touch their gear, but it became a twenty minute set that ended in me giving myself a cymbal crash. 'Don't say don't to a comedian', I said to them coming off. I opened for many acts over the years including Tom Jones (a class guy and very gracious), The Righteous Brothers (quiet but nice), Howie Mandel (a super person and very funny), Dennis Miller (very bright), The Temptations (very cool people) and Ray Charles, who was so nice to me and I was very much in awe of him. Man, did he have stories!" Punchline's was the first real comedy club in Vancouver. Robin Williams, Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Carrey, Norm Macdonald, Howie Mandel and other greats all headlined. Rich also opened the door to up-and-coming comics Ryan Stiles, Rick Ducommun, Patrick McKenna and many more. His Vancouver radio career in Vancouver included CFUN (as DJ Rich Kelly) and CKNW as a talk show host. He was MC for Red's 50th Anniversary In Radio celebration in 2004, and he would also step in for Red on CISL's morning show. Among Rich's acting roles over the years was a part in Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore in the mid-1990s. After getting out of the club business, he was an in-demand corporate comic and producer. Rich wrote comedy for the hit political series Double Exposure, and he developed several TV projects with writing partner Patrick McKenna. Rich Elwood died on December 2, 2021 at the age of 67. Old friend John Oliver says, "One of the funniest people I have ever known and a true friend. A risk-taker, an entrepreneur who never quit in his efforts to bring quality comedy to Vancouver." Tom Jeffries replaced Rich at CFUN: "He was most gracious and we had so much fun when he ran Punchline's. A very talented and hilarious man ― I miss him. I was blessed to call him a friend." Recorded in Vancouver in 2013.

This week, the hunt is on as we kick off the new year with a spy thriller from the director of Die Hard. It's 1990's The Hunt For Red October, directed by John McTiernan, based on the book by Tom Clancy, and starring Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, Sam Neill, Scott Glenn, James Earl Jones, Tim Curry, Courtney B. Vance, Stellan Skarsgard, Jeffrey Jones, Rick Ducommun and Fred Thompson. It's the first of a four-week January series that we're calling The Hunt For The American James Bond, as we go from last month's Mission: Impossible discussion to the broader effort of Paramount Pictures in the 1990s to create a hit spy franchise. There's certainly a lot to like about this one, but Baldwin's Jack Ryan feels pretty flat at the heart of it. Plus, Justin and Hayley both caught The Iron Claw in theatres over the break. Other works discussed in this episode include The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Thing, Alien, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, The Last Waltz, Kelce, Past Lives, Asteroid City, Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered, Assault on Precinct 13, GoldenEye, the Jack Ryan series as a whole, the James Bond series as a whole, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Jurassic Park, LOST, Crimson Tide, The Equalizer, and Training Day. If you'd like to watch the movie along with us this week, it (along with every other movie we're doing this month) can be found streaming on Paramount+. The hunt continues next week as we return with 1992's Patriot Games, in which Harrison Ford replaces Alec Baldwin in the lead, opposite a villainous Sean Bean. Until then, see you at the movies!

This week we're gawking at the weird freaks across the street, as we go from the urban hellscape of After Hours to Joe Dante's horror comedy about the monotonous terror of suburban living with 1989's The 'Burbs, directed by Dante, written by Dana Olsen, and starring Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern, Rick Ducommun, Carrie Fisher, Corey Feldman, Henry Gibson and Dick Miller. It's the start of another director series as we'll be celebrating the works of Joe Dante over the next three weeks, in a theme month we're calling Dante's In Fer November! Kicking it off with us is a man with a great mind for cinema, our most dedicated listener and a one-time radio jockey in his own right, Matt Pollock! Yes power listener Matty P is here to discuss a film very near and dear to him -- in fact his passion for it is what got J Mo to go scoop it up as a blind buy in the first place. Find him on Instagram, where he's making glorious movie content @MattysMovieBurner. Other works discussed in this episode include Cop Car, Bottoms, Neighbors, Lake Placid, The Money Pit, Space Jam, Moonfall, and the broader works of Joe Dante such as Gremlins, Gremlins II: The New Batch, Small Soldiers, Matinee, The Howling and Looney Tunes: Back In Action. Meanwhile we're hyper-fixated on Justin's listening habits, the Skrulls doing 9/11 on the 1994 Fantastic Four cartoon, and Matt is suitably trying to fix his dryer. We'll be back next week as Joe Dante Month continues with InnerSpace, a movie about flying around in a space ship inside Martin Short. Can't wait!

The North American Friends Movie Club

Brent, Kate, and Nate launch blast off with the hilarious 1987 American space opera parody film Spaceballs starring: Mel Brooks, Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten, George Wyner, Michael Winslow, Joan Rivers, Lorene Yarnell, John Hurt, Sal Viscuso, Ronny Graham, Jim J. Bullock, Leslie Bevis, Rudy De Luca, Stephen Tobolowsky, Dom DeLuise, Rick Ducommun, Sandy Helberg, Dey Young, Jim Jackman, Jack Riley, and Terence Marsh."Spaceballs" received mixed reviews from critics upon its release in 1987. While some praised its humor and clever parodies of science fiction films, others criticized it for being too silly and lacking substance. In his review for The New York Times, Vincent Canby wrote, "The movie is so desperate for laughs that it's willing to try anything, no matter how feeble or obvious." Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times also criticized the film, saying, "I would have been grateful for some consistency, some sense that they knew where the joke was and were headed for it." However, other critics such as Hal Hinson of The Washington Post praised the film's irreverent take on the sci-fi genre, writing, "Brooks has constructed a brilliantly dumb, visually dazzling satire that manages to send up all the major science-fiction films of the past decade while simultaneously lampooning our own." In addition to mixed reviews from critics, "Spaceballs" also faced some challenges during its production. The film had a relatively modest budget of $22.7 million, and faced competition from several other high-profile releases that summer, including "RoboCop" and "The Witches of Eastwick." Additionally, some of the film's jokes and references were considered too obscure for mainstream audiences, and many viewers may have missed some of the film's more subtle nods to classic sci-fi movies. Despite these challenges, "Spaceballs" managed to find an enthusiastic fanbase over time, with many viewers appreciating the film's over-the-top humor, memorable characters, and quotable one-liners. Today, the film is considered a cult classic and a testament to Mel Brooks' enduring legacy as a master of parody and satire. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: the 1993 American fantasy comedy film "Groundhog Day" directed by Harold Ramis and starring Bill Murray as the character Phil Connors, a cynical and egotistical weatherman, who after covering the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, becomes trapped in a time loop which forces him to repeat the same February 2 over and over again. The film also stars Andie MacDowell as Rita Hanson, a new television producer who Phil Connors falls in love with and who is integral in freeing Phil from his repeating cycle of reality, Chris Elliot as Larry the cameraman - as well as a plethora of other wonderful and well-known actors, such as: Stephen Tobolowsky as Ned Ryerson, Brian Doyle-Murray as Buster Green, Maria Geraghty as Nancy Taylor, Angela Paton as Mrs. Lancaster, Rick Ducommun as Gus, Rick Overton as Ralph, Robin Duke as Doris the waitress, and director Harold Ramis (Bill Murray's Ghostbusters co-star) also cameos as a neurologist who Phil goes to seeking an answer to his predicament. The film is a hilarious, lighthearted, critically-aclaimed comedy that is a favourite film of many that tells the story of someone is has to find a way to accept his shortcomings, so that he may change his ways, transform and become a better person for repeating the same day, doing the same things, seeing the same people, over and over again, and ultimately learning what makes life truly meaningful. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

If you want a rational, unbiased opinion on this film, mosey on over to one of the 500,000 other movie review podcasts begging you for downloads. This is not it. Be forewarned, this is Jake's third favorite film of all time, any genre. . . maybe even higher now that I type this out. . . oh, I guess now would be a good time to admit that I (Jake) have to write these dumb descriptions in the third person. There was only one person who would endure Jake bouncing up and down in his chair as his eyes fling apart like atoms in the Hadron Collider, his beautiful, patient, very patient wife: Ciara. That's right, you have begged and pleaded and the pulchritudinous prodigal spouse returns. Gremlins 2: The New Batch came out in 1990, but instead of its deserved thunderous applause, the more fitting sound effect would be a wet fart. Simply put, this movie may have been ahead of its time. Irreverent, fourth wall breaking, absurdist films were not really mainstream by that point. Jake forgot to mention this on the episode, but do you think Deadpool would exist without Gremlins 2? Also, when Disney inevitably obtains Warner Brothers, let's make that crossover happen. Directed by Joe Dante (The Howling), who would only come back to the franchise with full creative control. Creature effects by Rick Baker (An American Werewolf in London), who is a gilded god of gore and grossout. Zach Galligan returns as Billy Peltzer and Phoebe Cates reprises her role as Kate Beringer. Their old pal, Murray Futterman, played by Dick Miller, comes to visit them in the big city, from ol' Kingston Falls. John Glover plays industrialist Daniel Clamp. Robert J. Prosky plays Grandpa Fred. Robert Picardo plays head of security, Forster. Finally, the late and great Sir Christopher Lee Plays Dr. Cushing Catheter. The film also features cameos by Hulk Hogan, Dick Butkus, Bubba Smith, Rick Ducommun, Leonard Maltrin, and the indomitable John Astin, who many will remember as Gomez Addams. Find out about deleted scense, production, conception, literary references, easter eggs, basically everything that Jake has learned from worshiping this film for nearly 30 years, all in one hour! As the 30th anniversary of THE ‘BURBS (1989) descends upon us, it’s astonishing how the film still feels so fresh. By intelligently poking fun at suburban life and the paranoia that can result from boredom, this underseen Joe Dante film continues to be charming and gain an increasingly large cult following.   ▶️Synopsis: While having a stay-at-home vacation, one uptight suburbanite and his paranoid neighbors become convinced the new family in their quiet community are Satanic murderers. ⏩⏩Discussions include: How a solid, witty script and stylish look create a relatable world where the comedy never wears out. On top of the expertly-curated ensemble cast, we’ll discuss what the actors bring to the film and how ad-libbing came in handy during a Hollywood writer’s strike. We’ll dig into the themes of THE ‘BURBS, go behind the scenes of filming and director Joe Dante’s career and passion for moviemaking. **Starring Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, Rick Ducommun, Wendy Schaal, Corey Feldman. Directed by Joe Dante.**   ▶️SCENE BREAKDOWN: Realism becomes another form of artificial style in THE ‘BURBS. Justin Hayward discusses how Joe Dante is able to create very calculated comedic moments within dramatic situations.   ▶️**PICKS OF THE WEEK** —Lindsay’s Pick: THE MAN WITH ONE RED SHOE (1985): In this silly spy thriller, a clueless musician gets caught up in a game of espionage, while also falling for a woman who is spying on him. **Starring Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Jim Belushi, Lori Singer, Dabney Coleman. Directed by Stan Dragoti.**   —Justin’s Pick: MATINEE (1993): Harnessing the terror over impending nuclear war, a crafty filmmaker utilizes public fear to churn up excitement for the premiere of his newest, low-budget film, “Mant!” **Starring John Goodman, Cathy Moriarty, Kellie Martin. Directed by Joe Dante.**   ▶️MURRAYMOMENT: Diving into Billy’s Carl Spackler character in CADDYSHACK, and why he’d fit in perfectly with neighborhood boys in THE ‘BURBS.   ▶️FINAL THOUGHTS: A brief career retrospective of THE ‘BURBS co-star, Darla the Dog.   ▶️NEXT UP: CANDYMAN (1992)!

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

Big D thought we should do a Best of Rick Ducommun, and you're probably wondering who that is. You're not alone. Ducommun was in "Spaceballs," "The Last Boy Scout," "Die Hard," "Groundhog Day," and dozens of other '80s and '90s classics. You might say he's Mr. Shat The Movies, and Big D is a big fan.  So it's only fitting that Dick Ebert pop his Shat The Movies hosting cherry by guiding us through the 1989 classic "The Burbs," best known for another actor you might have heard of: Tom Hanks. Kerri Gross and The King Bee join Big D in discussing nipple hunting on cable TV, "The Burbs" connection to "The Silence of The Lambs," what the hell Corey Feldman is doing in this movie, Tom Hanks' disagreeable side, and how to be an awful neighbor. Also, learn what Kerri wears when she prowls her block as the Goth Avenger. And Big D pulls off another uncanny celebrity impersonation.
