"I AM my powers. And the good they can do. For my friends, and for the whole world. I reckon maybe I can live with that after all." Experts Jenny, Tim, and Keith are back with another double feature and faced with the question: what if the physical condition of mutation could be removed, rendering a mutant indistinguishable from their baseline human peers? This thought experiment has offered some of the richest concepts for exploration across all of X-Men media and drives the central conflict of our two-parter. Would such a mutation "cure" be selfish to pursue? After all, the Spider-Man Principle teaches us that with great power comes great responsibility; that is, a commitment to use said power to the maximum benefit of all. But does such a responsibility exist in a world that would just as soon see its self-appointed protectors erased from existence? Furthermore, wouldn't it be selfish or irresponsible for certain mutants, due to the nature of their powers, NOT to seek a cure if such an option was available? Possessing a dangerous, "always on" power that she cannot consciously control, Rogue is the one main character who represents the best argument in favor of a mutant cure. Her mutation is perhaps the cruelest of all - invisible on the surface, allowing her to easily pass as "normal," yet posing a risk to anyone within arm's reach. To counter this, Rogue must deprive herself even the most fleeting, casual acts of human intimacy. For all the good she can do as a member of the X-Men, it's hard to deny that the removal of her powers wouldn't be a net benefit: not only to Rogue individually, but society at large. There are others who view their mutations very much as gifts and intrinsic to their identities. This is where the series starts to touch upon the concept of mutant pride, and feels ahead of its time in doing so. While a number of X-Men stories can be boiled down to "good" mutants vs. "bad" mutants and the humans caught in the middle - or, the human response to living among mutants - another important dimension to consider is how mutants feel about themselves. On the one had, it would be easy to present the characters with superficially cool, wish-fulfillment powers completely under their control (itself an interesting type of privilege rarely brought up within the franchise) as being dismissive of the cure. Yet as with most things X-Men, the dividing lines are not so clear cut. In the end, the purported cure turns out to be a cautionary tale, with those who volunteered to go through with it ending up far worse off for the experience. Taking the cure off the board in this way may seem a cop-out, but to some extent the show has a moral imperative to do so. After all, there's no cure for any of the real-world stand-ins for mutation that make people "different." And even if there was, the onus isn't on the oppressed to change who they are for the satisfaction of their oppressors. The conclusions drawn and options available are much the same as where we leave this pair of episodes: there's no changing who you are, but you can change the way the world sees you. However unfairly, that burden is laid at the feet of the vulnerable communities most in need of such change. So it goes in life as it does in fiction, with the X-Men persisting in fighting for acceptance by a world that fears and hates them. X-Position X-TRA: Dr. Adler - presumably the real Dr. Adler - can be seen in a photograph alongside mutant inventor extraordinaire Forge in episode 4 ("Lifedeath," pt. 1) of sequel series X-Men '97. Forge goes on to explain that he worked with the scientist while in the employ of the U.S. Department of Defense. He stopped short of outright developing weapons against mutants, but Adler had no such qualms. Adler used Forge's research and prototypes to create the power-blocking inhibitor collars first seen on Genosha (in "Slave Island"). This same technology was utilized in the development of the neutralizer gun Storm was de-powered by in episode 2 ("Mutant Liberation Begins"). (Also pictured with Adler and Forge, albeit partially obscured? None other than Bastion, leader of the anti-mutant taskforce Operation: Zero Tolerance. The doctor traveled in extremely mixed company.)

The Phoenix Force and Other Drama This week on the Podcast, Brian and Darryl are back after an unexpected hiatus due to Brian’s Achilles Tendon surgery, and they are reviewing the second half of X-Men ’97 season 1! Episode Index Intro: 0:07 X-Men ’97: 4:02 X-Men ’97 (Disney+) Out 10 Are Charles and Magnus an Items Darryl: 9/10 Brian: 8.5/10 Season Summary X-Men ’97 begins with Cyclops uncovering a new anti-mutant technology, leading to a reunion with an old foe and the addition of a new team member. Magneto, now leading the X-Men due to Charles Xavier’s last will, faces trial for his past crimes, while anti-mutant rioters test his resolve. As the team confronts a visitor with a dangerous secret, Jubilee is transported into a 16-bit video game, reliving the X-Men’s greatest adventures. The season continues with Genosha preparing to join the UN, leading to political intrigue and media scrutiny for the X-Men. Storm faces her worst fears in a two-part storyline involving her relationship with Forge. Cyclops targets Bolivar Trask but discovers a deeper manipulation at play. The season culminates in a three-part epic where the X-Men must unite against a formidable new threat, challenging their unity and the dream of peaceful mutant-human coexistence Episode 6: “Lifedeath (Part 2)” Directed by: Chase Conley Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: April 17, 2024 Summary: During a war between the Shi’ar and Kree empires, Shi’ar empress Lilandra Neramani announces her engagement to a now-healed Xavier. Refusing to accept her sister marrying a Terran, Deathbird invokes the Rite of M’Dashaa and challenges Xavier to purge all his memories of Earth to prove his loyalty to the Shi’ar. Xavier’s refusal to renounce his memories of the X-Men results in a battle between the Shi’ar Imperial Guard and Deathbird’s supporters until Xavier pulls everyone into the astral plane to educate them on co-existence. When this lesson is interrupted by a psychic vision of Gambit’s death, Xavier returns to Earth. At the ranch, Forge uses his mother’s spell book to expel the demon and then Storm helps him search for a rare cactus that cures the poison. Storm finds the cactus in a cave but is again cornered by the Adversary. Overcoming her fears, Storm regains her powers and defeats the Adversary. Storm heals Forge, and then they learn about the attack on Genosha. Elsewhere, Trask is confronted by Mister Sinister who warns that Genosha was just the beginning. Episode 7: “Bright Eyes” Directed by: Emi Yonemura Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: April 24, 2024 Summary: As the X-Men hold a funeral for Gambit, Rogue angrily searches for Gyrich and Trask. After gaining information from General Thunderbolt Ross and Captain America, Rogue finds Gyrich in Mexico and absorbs his memories. Gyrich is murdered later that night. While assisting in the recovery efforts at Genosha, the X-Men are contacted by a terrified Trask who tells them that he is in Madripoor. They get Rogue on the way. Roberto and Jubilee visit Roberto’s mother and tell her that he is a mutant; she asks him to keep his identity a secret. In Madripoor, the X-Men learn that Sinister and the UN’s secret “OZT” division have been developing a highly advanced Sentinel program. Rogue drops Trask to his death, unknowingly activating programming that turns him into a human–Sentinel hybrid. Cable arrives, defeats Trask with an EMP, and explains that Sinister is working with a greater threat that they must stop. This threat, who murdered Gyrich, is Bastion. He reveals to Sinister that Xavier is alive in space and that Magneto, presumed dead in the Genosha attack, is also alive and is Bastion’s prisoner. Episode 8: “Tolerance is Extinction (Part 1)” Directed by: Jake Castorena Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: May 1, 2024 Summary: Part 1 : The UN reveals to the world that Xavier is alive, inciting an anti-mutant protest outside the school. Cable explains to the X-Men that the Genosha massacre is an “absolute point” in time that cannot be changed, and Bastion will use it to start a 300-year war that will lead to the enslavement of mutants in a human utopia. Cyclops, Jean, and Cable travel to Harmony, Pennsylvania, where they learn that Bastion is a human–machine hybrid who was conceived after his father was infected with part of the advanced, time-traveling Sentinel Nimrod. Members of “Operation: Zero Tolerance” (OZT) express concern over the massacre and ask Dr. Cooper to monitor Bastion, who explains to her how he is turning humans into Prime Sentinels like Trask using Sinister’s techno-organic virus. Prime Sentinels activate around the globe, attack mutants, and burn down Xavier’s school. A horrified Cooper releases Magneto, who creates a world-wide blackout that kills thousands of people and shuts down all of the Prime Sentinels. Wolverine fears that Magneto has declared war as Xavier returns and summons the X-Men. Episode 9: “Tolerance is Extinction (Part 2)” Directed by: Chase Conley Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: May 8, 2024 Summary: Part 2 : Xavier is met with some distrust, but the X-Men focus on stopping Bastion and convincing Magneto to reverse his blackout. Magneto re-establishes his mutant haven on Asteroid M, choosing to leave the Earth without power and rejecting Xavier’s dream of mutant/human co-existence. He invites the X-Men to join him, which Rogue and Roberto do. The rest of the X-Men return to their former base on Muir Island to regroup, before splitting into two teams: Cyclops’s Blue Team goes to Asteroid M to confront Magneto while Storm and Jean’s Gold Team heads to Bastion’s hideout in the Galápagos Islands. Beast and Forge create a collar that can block Bastion’s technopathy and sever his control over the Sentinels. The Gold Team battles an army of Bastion-controlled Sentinels and Sinister, who takes control of Cable’s mind and uses him to overpower Jean; she sends a desperate psychic message to Cyclops. On Asteroid M, Xavier attempts to take control of Magneto’s mind but is blocked. Wolverine stabs and seriously injures Magneto who begins ripping the adamantium metal from Wolverine’s skeleton. Episode 10: “Tolerance is Extinction (Part 3)” Directed by: Emi Yonemura Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: May 15, 2024 Summary: Part 3 : With Wolverine critically injured, Xavier takes control of Magneto and restores power to Earth, fracturing Magneto’s mind. Jean—connecting to the cosmic power of the Phoenix—places the collar on Bastion, restoring the Prime Sentinels’ humanity, and reverses Sinister’s mutant augmentations which frees Cable. The X-Men fight to prevent Bastion from crashing Asteroid M into Earth and causing a new extinction event. Still, it plummets after the U.S. government launches missiles at the asteroid hoping to destroy it. With Xavier’s help, Magneto regains consciousness and sends the asteroid into space. It explodes and most of the X-Men are presumed dead. Six months later, Bishop arrives and tells Forge that the X-Men are trapped in time: Cyclops and Jean are in 3960 A.D., a desolate future where they encounter Mother Askani and a young Nathan; and Rogue, Nightcrawler, Beast, Xavier, and Magneto are in Ancient Egypt in 3000 B.C. where they meet En Sabah Nur, a young version of Apocalypse. In a mid-credits scene, Apocalypse finds one of Gambit’s playing cards in present-day Genosha. Is Tolerance Extinction? Was Magneto Right?Matthew Fox and Riki Hayashi dive into the complex moral questions raised by the new Marvel animated series X-Men ‘97 on Disney+. The show, a continuation of the beloved 90s X-Men cartoon, explores themes of tolerance, assimilation, and the fight for mutant rights in a world that fears and oppresses them. The central question debated by Matthew and Riki is whether Magneto, the mutant extremist who believes coexistence with humans is impossible, was actually right all along. Is Professor X's dream of peaceful integration naive and ultimately doomed? Is violent resistance the only path forward for mutant liberation? The philosophies of the two leaders are compared to real-world civil rights movements and the tensions between assimilationist and separatist approaches.Other key questions and topics covered include:Does the mutant island nation of Genosha represent empowering self-determination or harmful segregation? How much should a sequel series cater to fans of the original vs. making itself accessible to new viewers?  The importance of authentic representation, as seen with casting Jubilee with an Asian-American voice actressParallels between anti-mutant prejudice and real-world discrimination against LGBTQ people, immigrants, and the disabledFrom debating political theory to nerding out over continuity references, Matthew and Riki cover a lot of ground in this deep dive into a surprisingly sophisticated superhero story. Ryan and Maddy were expecting "Lifedeath Part 2" to fit what its title suggests, but instead, this isn't so much an episode about Storm and Forge as it is an episode about Lilandra and Xavier. Our least favorite Professor is considering whether he should return to Earth or erase all of his memories of it so he can get married to Lilandra, and we all know which one he'll choose, even before he gets a vision of what happened to Genosha. The Storm/Forge storyline is wonderful, but there's not enough of it. What's with the pacing on this show??? Disney Plus has become a beacon of light and especially darkness in recent weeks, as we have been tuning into the revival series of X-Men 97 and The Bad Batch, which have us feeling some type of way (extreme sadness). The content material for both of these shows is HEAVY. Just because both of these series are animated, does not mean they hold back on the storylines. Characters through both of these series are constantly judged, hated against, and targeted for no reason, other than them wanting to do good. From the empire trafficking children for M-counts and cloning, to the mutants of X-Men being treated as outcasts and put through genocide because of their genetic makeup, Disney Plus has become a dark place the past few weeks.   ....however, we see the light at the end of the tunnel, or Genosha. "Comrades, let us all work together!" Jenny and Tim welcome Keith Langston back to the show as we cover the 8th episode (or 10th, depending on when you first saw it -- more on that below) of X-Men: The Animated Series! And it's no respite for our world-weary heroes, as they are flung from one crisis to the next. While the wrecked X-Mansion sets off television's most obvious whodunit, we can excuse this for likewise providing a handy excuse to introduce dual guest stars Colossus and the titular Juggernaut. Given the participants, this one doesn't exactly have high ambitions at being anything other than a massive throwdown. Consequently, it makes for the most boilerplate episode of TAS to date, in the sense that the show can't be said to be doing anything much different than a standard Saturday morning action vehicle. At a push, one could say that this does continue to keep some focus on human-mutant relations, by way of Colossus' quick payday and angry reprisals from the workers whose job he unwittingly swiped. It serves as a minor counterargument to Genosha's extreme answer to the question of mutation's economic utility. Why impose outright slavery when mutants are willing to be exploited and happy to be compensated for a fraction of what it would cost to employ a larger, human workforce? An all-too American solution, but not without its consequences, as the idealistic immigrant Colossus soon learns. There's also Juggernaut's single line clarifying that isn't a mutant, despite assumptions to the contrary. Still, this doesn't especially change his perception or treatment at the hands of the X-Men or the authorities. Nor does Juggernaut seem to hold any particular animus towards mutants, in a somewhat interesting change of course -- this one's personal for him. Beyond these minor signposts -- and a rather generic theme emphasizing the power of teamwork -- there's not a lot here to elevate "The Unstoppable Juggernaut" much above the surface. That doesn't mean it isn't thoroughly entertaining, delivering on the expected action, turning in some genuinely clever one-liners, and putting in work with a memorably imposing score. Plus, we get a delightful surprise check-in with the imprisoned Beast, keeping his subplot alive. So after coming in hot, this installment ultimately pumps the brakes at least somewhat on the show's otherwise rapid-fire pace. While the matter of Professor Xavier's absence remains to be addressed, we at least know it is of his own volition, drawing a line under the nonstop conflict and dramatic cliffhangers for now. A welcome breather, then, in as much as any massive slugfest with the Juggernaut can be. X-TRA: "The Unstoppable Juggernaut" was delayed by animation issues and was originally shown slightly out of order, as discussed by the crew. That necessitated some hasty edits to episode 7's conclusion as it was first broadcast, in an effort to smooth over the continuity. The result was an even more confusing viewing experience by the time this episode did debut, following “The Cure” and “Come the Apocalypse.” For the alternate ending of "Slave Island," aired once and never again, check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IS8RHoTAh14. To Me, My X-Men & Mutant Liberation BeginsOne year after Professor Charles Xavier left Earth with the Shi'ar,[a] the X-Men continue their mission to defend mutants and humans alike and go on to become legally sanctioned by the United Nations (UN). Additionally, Jean Grey has become pregnant while support for mutants has grown. After the X-Men save a young mutant named Roberto da Costa from the Friends of Humanity (FoH), Jean sees that they were outfitted with Sentinel tech and probes Henry Peter Gyrich's mind for the location of the Sentinels' creator, Bolivar Trask. Despite succeeding, she receives a horrifying premonition while doing so. The team later find Trask at a junkyard in the Sahara, where he is rebuilding his Sentinels with the aid of a lobotomized Master Mold. After defeating the Sentinels and apprehending Trask, Cyclops and Jean ponder leaving the team to raise their son away from mutant hatred. The following day, Magneto reveals Xavier's will, in which Xavier gave him control of the Institute and entrusted him with leading the X-Men.While trying to live up to Xavier's legacy, Magneto has taken to saving humans and mutants alike and refraining from killing anti-mutant militants. Distrustful of him, Cyclops and Jean stay to observe Magneto while Rogue sympathizes with his struggles. When UN forces led by Valerie Cooper arrive at the Institute to arrest Magneto for his past terrorism, he surrenders peacefully, hoping to gain the X-Men and humanity's trust. During his trial at the UN's headquarters, the FoH stage an assault on the building. Their leader, X-Cutioner, attempts to shoot a de-powering radiation blast at Magneto, but Storm takes the hit for him. Magneto stops the assault, after which the UN grants him a pardon and discuss the possibility of integrating the mutant nation Genosha. Meanwhile, Jean goes into labor and Rogue is forced to absorb an obstetrician's knowledge when he refuses to deliver a mutant's baby. Jean gives birth to a son, whom she names Nathan. When Beast informs Storm that X-Cutioner's blast de-powered her permanently, she leaves the team to find new meaning in life.
