This week on #TubtaNabadda, ahead of the International Literacy Day, we discuss about the importance of skills-based literacy for persons with disabilities in Somalia. A recent report published by the Somalia National Bureau of Statistics shows that there is a wide disparity in literacy rates between individuals with and without disability. The literacy rate of individuals with disabilities is lower compared to those without disabilities at 34.1 per cent and 56.0 per cent, respectively. It is also noteworthy that literacy rates are higher for men than women, regardless of their disability status. The report also emphasises the need for targeted interventions to improve access to education and literacy for persons with disabilities. With that in mind, in the first segment of this episode, we hear from Abdulkadir Mohamed Abdullahi, one of the co-founders of the Somali Visually Impaired Youth Organization - UDHAN. He shares insights from a recent UN-supported Braille production training held in Kampala, where three members of UDHAN participated in a range of hands-on lessons focused on utilising various tools and technologies to enhance educational accessibility for visually impaired individuals. In the second segment, Hamdi Hussein Osman, a programme officer at UDHAN and fellow training participant, shares her experiences and the potential applications of her newfound knowledge to improve educational access for visually impaired persons in Somalia. She underlines the urgent need for resource allocation, including establishing dedicated centres to support persons with disabilities. [This show is produced in Somali only; English caption of the show context is down below] This week on #TubtaNabadda, we discuss Somalia's recent inclusion in the Human Development Report (HDR) for the first time in 30 years. Produced by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the HDR is an annual human development index. First done in 1990, the Human Development Report introduced a new approach for advancing human wellbeing. Human development – or the human development approach - is about expanding the richness of human life, rather than simply the richness of the economy in which human beings live. It is an approach that is focused on people and their opportunities and choices. Somalia's inclusion represents an opportunity for Somalia to forge a path toward a more sustainable and prosperous future. In the first segment, we hear from Saifeldin Daoud Abdelrhman, an economist from UNDP Somalia. He discusses why this inclusion is a milestone for Somalia, the role of the Human Capital Development Coordination Forum in Mogadishu and how this forum can guide the UN's initiatives in support of the betterment of Somali people. In the second segment, we hear from Mohamed Abdinur, a statistician and deputy director-general of Somali National Bureau of Statistics. He talks about what it means for Somalia to appear in the report and the efforts that are ongoing by the Somali government to promote human capital development through investment in a range of sectors such as healthcare, education and employment. The program is presented by Abdiaziz Dirie and Faiza Abdi Warsame. [This show is produced in Somali only; English caption of the show context is down below] In 2023, to mark the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, the United Nations collaborated with the National Theatre of Somalia to hold the country's first-ever Human Rights Short Film Competition (HRSFCS). Subsequently, in partnership with the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, the top three entries were featured in a special programme on the national broadcaster, Somalia National Television (SNTV), so that the wider public could enjoy their films. In this episode of #TubtaNabadda we feature a summary of this SNTV discussion session where the directors share their work, the challenges they encountered along the way, and the vital role that storytelling plays in raising awareness about human rights in Somalia. In the first segment, we hear from Ahmed Aweis Hassan, the director of "Kiin," which took first place in the HRSFCS. This impactful film sheds light on the human rights violations faced by young girls in the job market. In the second segment, we hear from directors Abdisamad Hassan Omar and Salman Osman Sharif, who created "Qab iyo Iil" and "Wali Rajo ayaan Leeyahay," respectively. "Qab iyo Iil" explores how clannism limits job opportunities for educated youth, while "Wali Rajo ayaan Leeyahay" tells a powerful story of a girl whose life is shattered by war, yet clings to hope for a brighter future. The program is presented by Abdiaziz Dirie and Faiza Abdi Warsame. [This show is produced in Somali only; English caption of the show context is down below] This week on #TubtaNabadda, in the lead-up to World Radio Day on 13 February, we discuss a different face of radio – podcasting – and how it has become a source of information and a forum for discussions. Beginning as an extension of radio broadcasts – and in some cases continuing as such – podcasts have evolved into an independent format, and we talk about podcasts' appeal, use and potential in Somalia. Our first guest is Mowlid Haji Abdi, a podcaster, founder and CEO of Horn Broadcasting Network. He explains what a podcast is, their popularity with Somali audiences and how his daily podcasts connect him to his listeners. Our second guest is Suheyba Mohamed Badqas, a content creator of YouTube channel ‘Suheyba Badqas.' She tells us about what attracted her to start podcasting, how she selects the topics and how she interacts with her audience. The programme is presented in Somali by Faiza Abdi and Mohamed Salad. This week on #TubtaNabadda, we bring you UN Women's Syed Sadiq and Khadija Abdikadir Ali from the Somali Women Development Centre (SWDC) in Baidoa to hear from them on one of the most prevalent and pervasive human rights violations in the world: violence against women and girls. Women and girls in Somalia suffer various forms of violence, such as female genital mutilation, domestic violence and economic violence. There is no excuse for violence against women and girls, and to end it, everyone has to be involved – government, justice authorities, civil society, educational institutions, religious figures and communities. Relevant laws need to be created and implemented, and services for survivors must be in place and easily accessible; finally, there must be accountability for crimes. The programme is presented in Somali by Ali Gutale and Faisa Abdi Warsame.
