À la veille de l'inauguration d'un nouveau centre de traitement contre Ebola dans le quartier de Rwankole, à Bunia, en République démocratique du Congo (RDC), Dr Sambo Sidikou, d'International Medical Corps, détaille les enjeux de cette nouvelle structure de 100 lits, destinée à renforcer la prise en charge des malades dans l'un des principaux foyers de l'épidémie.Dans cet entretien accordé à Priscilla Lecomte, du Bureau des Nations Unies pour la coordination des affaires humanitaires (OCHA), il explique pourquoi ce centre a été implanté à Rwankole, où les communautés voisines enregistrent un nombre croissant de cas.« Nous comptons sur la communauté pour pouvoir accélérer le processus d'identification des cas », souligne-t-il, insistant sur l'importance d'une détection précoce pour améliorer la prise en charge.Il revient également sur les risques particuliers qu'Ebola fait peser sur les femmes enceintes, ainsi que sur l'appui des partenaires de la riposte. Avec le soutien de l'agence des Nations Unies chargée des questons de santé sexuelle et reproductive, l'UNFPA, les patients reçoivent notamment des « kits de dignité » à leur sortie du centre, un moment marqué par une cérémonie célébrant leur guérison et leur retour dans la communauté. Rethinking preventionThe funding crisis reshaping global health has hit HIV prevention particularly hard. At the same time, science is handing us some of the most powerful HIV prevention tools we have ever had – long-acting injectables like lenacapavir and cabotegravir, and a monthly oral pill on the horizon. But science alone does not deliver prevention. That takes systems, policy, funding and a trained healthcare workforce. Lakini hii kukutana na wazee, wamama na wanakijiji kwa ujumla imesaidia, kwasababu nilikutana na wakina mama wakaniambia ile kitu mlikuwa mnasema tumeona ni uhalisia na tumeona inaweza kufanyika.”Mwingine aliyeathirika na ukeketaji ni Nasarai Learo anasema ukeketaji umechukua nguvu zake.“Mimi sina nguvu kama yule mama ambaye hajakeketwa, nilienda kuwaambia wamama wasikekete watoto wao, lakini wakaniambia wananifahamu na nilipoolewa nilkuwa mdogo sana na wao ndio walionishika nikatetetwe nikiwa mdogo. Lakini mimi niliwaeleza mimi sikuwa najua hiki kitu ni kibaya lakini sasa hivi nimekuwa na elimu na nimejua ubaya wake.”Nasarai anaamini kuwa iwapo jamii itapata elimu basi itabadilika“Jamii yetu sanasana haina elimu, tukiona jamii yetu watu wachache ndio wamesoma na wengi wakisoma watapata hiyo elimu zaidi na watakuja kuikomesha FGM. Mimi naamini kwamba miaka 10 inayokuja mambo ya kukeketa wasichana hatutasikia tena.” Elimu ya kutokomeza ukeketaji inatolewa katika maeneo mbalimbali ikiwemo masokoni, katika vikao vya jumuiya na mashuleni. 

Miongoni mwa utakayo yasikia hii leo jaridani ni mzozo huko Mashariki ya Kati baada ya Israel na Marekani kuishambulia Iran na kisha Iran kujibu mashambulizi. John Seager, President and CEO of Population Connection, has authored numerous articles and op-eds on population growth and development.    Studies have shown, when given the choice, most women prefer to have smaller families and families want to make their own decisions. Soft power is critical to saving lives and free people from tyranny and disease. These efforts have been undercut by the decimation of USAID and withdrawal from the UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund. Population issues should not be pollical, but bipartisan as in the past.   The educational materials fit into each state's educational requirements to be objective and informative. Modern contraception is a transformative tool to help people plan their families. If there is a decline in population, according to a Goldman Sachs study, communities that lose population will also lose schools, hospitals and employment opportunities. The recent Republican bill will close hundreds of hospitals in the U.S.

Bibi is a passionate advocate for mental health and gender equality, with an impressive background in political science and public administration from the University of Ottawa, where she focused on international relations and mental health policy. She previously served as a Legislative Assistant in the Parliament of Canada, where she worked closely with Members of Parliament, analyzing bills, legislative amendments, and committee reports on international trade, science and technology, government operations, and more. Her commitment to global advocacy led her to the United Nations Population Fund's Asia-Pacific Regional Office in Thailand. There, Bibi championed initiatives to eliminate gender-based violence, promote gender equality, and strengthen international mental health advocacy. She played a key role in regional consultations for the UN Commission on the Status of Women and developed a monitoring and evaluation platform used across UNFPA regional and country offices. Bibi is also the founder of Project Breaking Barriers, a campus-based initiative that creates safe spaces for students to decompress and learn mental wellness practices. Her efforts sparked faculty-wide recognition, leading to the creation of a scholarship supporting students facing mental health and financial struggles. Her advocacy work has reached the federal level—Bibi authored a policy proposal calling for accessible, affordable, and inclusive mental health services. This proposal was adopted by three major political parties during the 2021 election and helped pave the way for the establishment of Canada's first federal Minister of Mental Health and Addictions.
