Yakkin With Nick is a podcast where Nick Hazelton just yaks about stuff. Nick is a yak and hog farmer on the valley side of Oregon's coastal hill range. He likes to discuss topics like the outdoors, farming, running a business, making cool things, and local events.
Antony Sammeroff joins Nick to discuss Antony's article on placating to people. Defining authenticity and exploring some specific situations where it is at risk are the themes of this show. This was a fun and productive conversation with Drew Sample of The Sample Hour. I visited Drew and his Capital City Greens operation in Columbus, Ohio in August this year. He has been a mentor for my business and sales strategies. Sometimes I feel like Drew and I will ramble on too much and be too tangential, this time we did a good job. But I think that we're trying to include nuance and context to the ideas we speak on.
I just haven't been liking the content I've been trying to make in the last couple years. I think I've figured out what I'd like to change.
This might be a challenging episode, mostly because of my stammering. I feel a need to tread lightly, but I did my best to just express what I've been thinking about. I support human freedom. I support care for all people. I support the experiences of people in this world. I don't want to attach anything else to that. I'm just yakkin on this one. Talking a bit about the current virus going around. I haven't collected all of my thoughts and feelings on this situation yet but here's what I'm initially thinking.
When I have problems with sales, I talk to Drew. He's one of my favorite people to chat with, and his advice is dead on for me. I recorded this last week and I don't remember much of what I said. I know I focused on relationships and building them. This year was different than any of my prior years because I've spent so much time building relationships. I'm working with friends on the farm, I'm meeting new people, and I care much more about people. My life is better for this, maybe yours could be changed by strengthening a relationship.
Long time no speak, I'm dropping you a little update and just some good ol' yakkin. Thank you to everybody who has continued to support me on Patreon, it really makes a difference in my life.I have ideas and the best intentions to create more content, but timing isn't right now.
I wrecked a car yesterday, I managed to get out uninjured. But it was a close one and made me reflect on life. I'm very grateful to be alive and well, I'm bummed about the pickup, but I live another day and will able to work to buy a new vehicle. I hope you're living your best life, or at least trying. It sucks when shit happens, but it adds spice to life. We take a lot of things for granted, shocking events make us rethink and appreciate what we do.
Long time, no hear! Just poppin in for a quick update. Been busy busy busy on the farm. Almost too much to write about in this boiling hot room... Nah, not even almost, too hot to write. Listen to the episode, you cheater. Thanks to all the Patrons that have supported me through an absence of content. It really means a lot, not just the money, but knowing that people care about what I'm doing. Thank you all. While I've been podfading, I've been looking at the variables in my life. The things that affect what I'm trying to do with my life, of which there are many. I have goals and a purpose in life, and I'm constantly trying to be focused on them. But it's easy to be distracted and easy to lose what you're trying to attain. It's impossible to be in control of all variables in you life, even impossible to influence them all. But what can you do about problematic variables? Good question that I don't have a complete answer too. Today I focused on the variable of relationships, the people in my life. Dealing with people can be quite difficult, but also quite rewarding. I discuss how to deal with people and what I'm doing to improve my relationships. I thought I'd let you know what's going on on the farm, animals are fed and healthy(not all dry though). Our goals are getting met slowly, we're making it work. Been tapping maple trees for syrup, nursing sick pigs, taking care of baby animals. I FORGOT TO MENTION BABY GOATS! We have had a bunch of goat kids, which are totally adorable. The only baby creatures on the farm that don't run away from you immediately. The grass is growing, the mild winter has blessed us with green grass and lots of mud in high traffic areas. Life is great on the farm. How is your year going? Accomplishing the tasks you laid out? Reaching your goals? Are you enjoying your time? I'm on a strange kick of enjoying the fuck out of life. I'm not used to having this level of satisfaction in my life. Things are going well, but I'm still not where I want to be. I haven't met my goals, I'm not even on top of everything I'm doing in my life. None of it's perfect, or even close to it, but I'm still enjoying it. I think I can give credit to some changes I've made in my mindset. Particularly a focus on enjoying every moment I have. Trying to find the beauty and the joy around me anytime I have the chance. I try to make everyday a day in the life I want to be living. I hope you can find that for yourself, and I hope this helps. Mass shootings suck, anytime innocent people die sucks. Many people are talking about the recent shooting in Florida, and I'm glad that so many people care about tragedies like this. But I'm not seeing very many truly helpful responses to this event. The messages I'm hearing are "The left is politicizing tragedies!" "The right doesn't care about children!" That's not helpful. That doesn't change people's minds, it drives them into their corners and trenches deeper. And it doesn't solve the issue, that mentally unstable children(adults too) with the intent of killing their peers, are getting access to very dangerous weapons and carrying out their violent dreams on innocent people. I know these events don't happen very often statistically, but it is an issue, and attempting to remove a technology from the public is silly. The problem isn't that AR-15's exist or even that there aren't enough armed guards at schools. The problem is that systems, societies, families, and institutions in this country are creating these monsters. Kids aren't violent because of guns, they're violent because of how they were raised. If we want mass shootings to stop, we have to take responsibility in our own hands. Not the legislature's, not law enforcement's, not even school administrators'. It's your responsibility to make sure your kid grows up with an appreciation of life and love.
Geoffrey Hazelton is my father's father, and has been an inspiring and very encouraging figure in my life. I think one of my greatest advantages in life has been an amazing family who encouraged learning, critical thinking, and setting yourself apart. The elder Hazelton's in my life really sparked my interest in politics at a young age, this is where I got my desire to speak my mind and challenge ideas. My grandfather is one of my favorite teachers. I may have introduced some novel and important ideas to his world, but he has studied and broken down many of these ideas for me. A lot of my knowledge on stoicism comes from discussions we've had and a daily stoic practice journal he gave me a few years ago. I didn't know much about Grampa Jeff's life, just some of the highlights, so I wanted to dig a bit deeper today. We discussed his life journey and some of the important lessons he has learned while living on this planet.
I've been thinking about human brutality throughout history as I've been researching some brutal times in America, specifically Oregon. The history of the native peoples here is quite tragic, so I explored some of my feelings and thoughts on that history and how I've been affected by it. Thaddeus Russell of Renegade University joined me to talk about American history, culture, and how to change and influence culture. I really think history is important to study, after all, it repeats itself. If we're going to work on a better future, we better understand our history. I talk about my relationship with animals and my thoughts on raising livestock animals for meat. Most people in the modern world don't raise or even see the food they eat. Part of the reason I raise animals is to provide that experience for myself, but also to allow others to get to at least see and know how their meat lived. Many people think eating meat is a black and white issue, good or bad. But just like anything in life, it's much more complicated. European truffles are famous for being expensive and adding a unique flavor to dishes. These truffles can go for $800/lb or more, mostly because of their difficulty being cultivated. But it turns out, Oregon has it's own truffles! Western Oregon, particularly the small area I live in is prime truffle territory. Oregon black and white truffles have become more popular in the recent years, they're very similar to the European truffles and have the same culinary uses. Oregon truffles tend not to be as expensive as those in Europe, but they have the same flavor and are certainly easier to get. If you're interested in any Oregon truffles, let me know. Richard Grove of Tragedy and Hope.com joins me to talk about sales. Rich is apart of a business mastermind group with me, I wanted to hear some more advice on being a successful entrepreneur from him, and I thought it would be good to record it to share with you! Making money is about exchanging goods and services. It's not about a diploma or certification, it's about providing value. A diploma or certification theoretically shows that you can provide value because you've met a certain level of competency with certain skills. But what matters is if you really can provide value for others. If you want to make a lot of money, provide a lot of value. Become valuable, learn skills, set yourself apart from your peers. I'm just yakkin on this episode. I hit hard man, what really matters here? Some people have a mission and a purpose already, and not everybody has to tear down everything they believe with skepticism or low self-esteem. But if you are tearing it down, I think an answer is there. Doing certain things feel good. Doing other things make you feel bad. The consequences aren't always immediate, it may feel good to steal a candy bar, but it sucks to get caught. And the system of consequences can be pretty complicated, but if you try to learn it, you'll get better at getting the results you desire. Never perfect, but better and better. These things are fantastic and have been part of a huge technology boom that has made living as human being much easier and much more fun than it ever has been. Nash(a former guest of Yakkin With Nick) put on KV's first annual Can Jam, where a few artists got on stage to play music. My grandfather, a listener, gave me a suggestion to talk about expectations on a show. I just now realized I didn't fully answer his questions that I read on the show, but I think this presentation is value and I will have to do another show on what it's like to be young and meeting expectations. I go over what expectations are, compare them to obligations, go over examples, and then talk about how useful they are.
Today I talk about how I've managed(lack thereof actually) my animals and their pastures and how I have improved and plan on improving my management. Part of that process is learning how to grow grass, and I really didn't touch on that in this episode as much as I could. I think what I spoke on was actually more valuable than the details on grass growth. I may do a different show on growing grass, but I wanted to stick with my lame joke in the beginning. Authenticity, being true to yourself, is a big deal to me. This is partly why I chose to pursue a non-scripted unedited format for this show. I want to be who I really am all the time, I want to be comfortable in all situations. This isn't practical 100% of the time, but most of the time I think it is beneficial and I want to pursue being true to myself.
I was inspired by a conversation with a friend about politics, liberty, and rural lifestyles to talk about something that I have on my mind a lot. I feel that the rural lifestyle is disappearing, and I don't like that. Maybe I'm being impractical and pessimistic, but I really like living in the wooded hills of Oregon.
