America 250: The Boston Campaign 1775-76: A Leadership Discussion with Gen. William Rapp

This is a conversation to kick off the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. Retired U.S. Army Major General and history buff, Bill Rapp, drops some knowledge on how the colonies weren't exactly gung-ho for a full-blown revolution before April 1775. Turns out, they were mostly ticked off and feeling rebellious in response to intolerable British policies. But a tense situation and an itchy trigger finger set it off. The episode covers the action-packed Battles of Lexington and Concord, George Washington taking charge of the Continental Army, the intense Battle of Bunker Hill (which was actually fought on Breed's Hill), and the clever move at Dorchester Heights that sent the British packing from Boston. William “Bill” Rapp is a retired Major General of the United States Army with 33 years of distinguished service which included combat deployments in three wars, two Defense Service Medals, two Bronze Star Medals, Master Parachutist and Ranger tabs. He was not only a respected Army officer, but also a leadership developer who served as Commandant of the Army War College and Commandant of Cadets at the US Military Academy at West Point.  In over 42 months in combat, Bill led an airborne engineer company in the first Gulf War, commanded a 3,000-soldier brigade in the Iraq War, served as General Petraeus' personal assistant during the Iraq Surge, and commanded over 17,000 troops supplying all resource needs of the 160,000 U.S. and international force in Afghanistan in 2011-12. He also served as the Army's senior liaison to the U.S. Congress. Bill holds a PhD in Political Science from Stanford University and is the author of the book about the Boston Campaign of the American Revolutionary War titled Accomplishing the Impossible: Leadership That Launched Revolutionary Change. He now consults and teaches on leadership and is working on his second book on Sioux and Cheyenne leadership at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. It's a life-long journey of commitment to the Lord—a commitment that involves: 1) Doing what God wants you to do, even if it's hard, 2) Staying steady, even when others don't understand, 3) Remembering what God has done and giving Him the glory for it and 4) Facing the challenges and trusting God. Host: Darryl S. Chutka, M.D. Guest: Christopher L. Camp, M.D. Being a healthcare clinician is an extremely rewarding occupation, but it can be stressful. Every year, we're asked to do more and more, the patients seem to get more challenging, and we get less time to spend with each one. A significant number of clinicians report emotional and psychological distress, and burnout remains a major problem in healthcare providers. This increased stress and pressure is not just unique to physicians, and these struggles are common for all of us, regardless of career or position. How do we remain in an optimally functioning state? Does our physical health affect our cognitive function? Given the obstacles we face, how do we continue to achieve joy and happiness in our work and our life while continue to meet the ever-growing demands of the world? These are questions my guest is hoping to answer in a project he's about to undertake on “Human Optimization”. My guest for this podcast is Christopher L. Camp, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist at the Mayo Clinic. We're going to discuss his project and why he decided to tackle this important topic.  Learn more about The Human Optimization Project: Mayo Clinic Talks: Human Optimization | Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development X: @MayoHumanOpProj Instagram: @Mayo_Human_Op_Prog Connect with Mayo Clinic Podcasts | Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development

“Nothing can add more power to your life than concentrating all your energies on a limited set of targets.” -Nido Qubein Most people live lives of constant distraction, never giving their full attention to one person or project. They're diffused and distracted. They dabble and dawdle.  Years ago, having a high IQ was a competitive advantage. Cal Newport, the author of the book Deep Work, has said, "Focus is the New IQ." Today, amidst all the distractions, if you can develop the ability to singularly focus on a task for a sustained period, you will have a competitive advantage. Nobody has achieved anything worthwhile without the ability and discipline to focus. Every great musician, athlete, or author has needed to give their singular attention to one thing, often and for extended periods.   Your ability to do great work, master a skill, and experience success is directly proportional to your ability to concentrate. And your ability to concentrate is directly proportional to your ability to eliminate distractions.

Welcome to Day 2561 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom – Theology Thursday – Destiny & Destination – I Dare You Not To Bore Me With The Bible. Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2561 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2561 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Today is the 42nd lesson in our segment, Theology Thursday. Utilizing excerpts from a book titled: I Dare You Not To Bore Me With The Bible written by Hebrew Bible scholar and professor the late Dr. Michael S Heiser, we will invest a couple of years going through the entire Bible, exploring short Biblical lessons that you may not have received in Bible classes or Church. The Bible is a wonderful book. Its pages reveal the epic story of God's redemption of humankind and the long, bitter conflict against evil. Yet it's also a book that seems strange to us. While God's Word was written for us, it wasn't written to us. Today's lesson is: “Destiny & Destination.” “I hope to see you in passing as I go to Spain,” Paul said while imprisoned. His ambitions are repeated a few verses later: “When therefore I have completed this ... I will leave for Spain by way of you” (Rom 15:28). It's certainly ambitious for him to be making travel plans. But Paul wasn't making casual conversation or planning a vacation. He believed his life and ministry would not end until he reached Spain. We aren't sure if Paul made it, but he was passionate about getting there. Why? He saw himself in the prophecy of Isaiah 66.   Day of Salvation Throughout his letters, Paul quotes Isaiah and other Old Testament books to show that the long-promised day of salvation would come during his lifetime. In the Old Testament, the Jewish belief in Jesus as the Messiah was preceded by something Paul referred to as “the fullness of the Gentiles” (Rom 11:25). In Romans 9-11, Paul says that Gentile (non-Jew) inclusion in the people of God was made possible by the hearts of the Jewish people being temporarily hardened (11:25-26). Accomplishing the mission of Gentile evangelism would undo this hardening. Only then would Paul's longing for the Jews to believe in Jesus come to full fruition. And only then would the deliverer (Jesus) come again from Zion (11:26). Isaiah 66:18-20 prophesies that the Lord would gather all nations to see His glory. He would give them a “sign” of His promised salvation. The sign would be delivered by Jewish exiles, sent by God into far-off nations—specifically, the lands of Tarshish, Put, Lud, Tubal, and Javan. The conversion of the Gentiles would result in the Jews from those nations returning to the Lord. The Sign Paul Saw Paul interpreted Isaiah 66 through Christian eyes. The “sign” (TH, 'ot,) was the virgin-born Jesus (compare Isa 7:14—“The Lord himself will give you a sign”).- At Pentecost, Jews whose ancestors were exiled to foreign nations came to Jerusalem from those nations. They witnessed a sign of the Holy Spirit coming upon the disciples, heard the gospel miraculously in their own language, and...

Have you ever set a goal and not hit it? You had every good intention to see that through to completion but somewhere along the line, you lost motivation? You're not alone. Researchers suggest that only 9% of Americans that make resolutions actually complete them. In fact, research goes on to show that 23% of people quit their resolutions by the end of the first week, and 43% quit by the end of the first month. Though you are alone in your struggle, these statistics reflect a deeper issue beyond just goal-setting—they point to a lack of sustained commitment, and more importantly, the absence of a connection to God's dreams and vision for our lives. In this episode, I want to encourage you to STOP SETTING GOALS and instead, I want to give you a sustainable NON-New Year Approach to accomplishing your dreams! Accomplishing anything of significance in this political environment requires courage. The legal industry has a few well-trodden pathways: law school, clerkship, large law firm, and perhaps a brief stint in government. Yet without courage, there is little potential for lasting impact along these pathways. While prior administrations may have emphasized conventional career paths and credentials in their selection process, there is an emerging interest in selecting for courage, independent thought, and sound judgment. But what paths best equip future leaders to accomplish great things in public service? Does the pressure to keep the option to return to a large law firm hinder one from accomplishing great things? What should we be doing to support people who demonstrate courage - including those who make the courageous choice to balance their careers with responsibilities to family and children?Featuring:Ms. Libby Locke, Partner, Clare Locke LLPHon. No one said it would be easy. If you are the owner of an interest in a business which has become profitable, you and your team have done something right and it probably was not easy. Moreover, it will not be easy to keep your business profitable. What follows is a chart for the failure rate year by year from a LendingTree analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data (https://www.lendingtree.com/business/small/failure-rate/).   Time Frame Percentage of Failure Within 1 year 23.2% After 2 years 32.8% After 3 years 36.2% After 4 years 43.2% After 5 years 48.0% After 6 years 52.9% After 7 years 56.6% After 8 years 59.6% After 9 years 62.2% After 10 years 65.3% The five- and 10-year business failure rates respectively are that 48.0% and 65.3% of businesses fail. So even if you survive the first years and become profitable, it does not get easier. For the continuity of a business after profitability several things should align, a group decision-making process continuing to produce good decisions, owner-managers delegating management functions more and more as the business grows, and the strategy of the owners consistently being expressed in a business plan which is executed and revised on a continuum. The longer the business operates profitably, the more it increases in value. At the point of consistent profitability the owners' strategy should focus beyond profitability to deriving the maximum value from the business. The wealth-building event that transfers the maximum value from the business risk of owning a business to the relatively lower risk of having that value in personal investment assets is a sale of the business to a third-party buyer. The Prior Diligence strategy is the process a business owner utilizes for deriving maximum value from a business sale. It is the seller's preparation for the buyer's due diligence, which is the buyer's investigation of the business as a part of the sale process. Prior Diligence involves planning done through group decision-making by documenting in writing the decisions of a policy-making group. The plans, strategic and operational, include the setting of goals, performance measurement, and incentive systems linked to value creation. The plans are dynamic and subject to constant revision. Prior Diligence installs processes that encourage managers and employees to act to maximize the value of the business with a philosophy of managing the business to sell the business. There are requisite components which must be in place to derive maximum value from a business interest. The owner of the business interest must perceive and anticipate the inevitable separation of the owner from the business interest. There should be co-owners who each understand the benefits of co-ownership of a business. Majority ownership control can be maintained while obtaining the benefit of group decision-making. The value of each owner's interest is insured by buy-sell provisions in an owner agreement. The value of a business interest owner to owner (fair value) should be understood to be different from the owner's share of the market value of the business. To obtain maximum value for a business there must be a sale to an unrelated third-party where no owner's participation in the business is deemed essential to the success of the business. Accomplishing the maximum, as in being the best, is not always obtainable, but no one said it would be easy. The maximum is a worthwhile goal. What is obtained by striving for the maximum will bring better results than if the effort to obtain the maximum were not made. No one said it would be easy. Resolve that no matter how you are separated from your business interest, the maximum possible value of that interest will go to your heirs as your legacy. If you make that resolve in good faith, you have established the first component. Keep going. If you do not have co-owners, contemplate reasonable ways to obtain co-owners without losing legal control. With your co-owners, negotiate and create a contingency succession plan with basic buy-sell provisions. Endeavor to understand and utilize the dimensions of group decision-making and how that planning activity can cause execution of planning to make the business more viable. Start discussing the value of the business and the differences that exist between the amounts owners pay one another for interests in the business and the amount an unrelated third-party might pay for the business interest. My name is Rick Riebesell and I am principal consultant of Business Transition Consulting (https://btcllc.net) and author of the blog Business Concern (https://businessconcern.net). For a business owner wanting to implement the Prior Diligence strategy, I write a Substack called Owning a Business (https://rickriebesell.substack.com) with an archive of information about the Prior Diligence strategy and through the chat process providing a dialogue with me and other business owners about the business ownership experience. Thanks for your attention.

Sent us text! We would love to hear from you!Accomplishing purpose driven goals requires commitment as well as enduring periods of discomfort. Athletes in general and olympians in particular, experience many years of extreme physical and emotional stress in their quest to be the best in their sport. This year's Summer Olympics has been historic for many reasons. One of the key moments of distinction was at the conclusion of the Womens Gymnastics 2024 Olympic Floor final results which had three black women at the podium, all at the same time, being awarded the gold, silver and bronze medal respectively. The crowd in attendance cheered and applauded with great joy. This celebration in Paris was in stark contrast to the final result of the Mens 200 meter dash at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City where John Carlos and Tommie Smith gave a Black Power salute. With each man raising a black-gloved fist as a sign of defiance of the racial condition afflicting the majority black people in their quest for equality in the USA during that tumultuous era, contrary to being celebrated they found themselves vilified and shunned by mainstream media for causing discomfort for those unaccustomed to challenge of the social status quo. For more good news, former New York City mayor, Michael Bloomberg does it again. His philanthropic organization has donated an additional 600 million dollars on top of the one billion dollar donation he's already provided to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine just two months ago. This time his donation will be directed specifically to four historically black medical schools, doubling their overall endowments in the long term quest to narrow racial health care disparities across the country. When people hear the term ‘spin' with an airplane it brings up the thoughts of a disaster. But in the rarefied air of Naval Aviation, there is a type of spin that is a good thing. That term is used exclusively in carrier aviation when the visual landing pattern is so full of aircraft that there is room for no more. In that case additional aircraft approaching the pattern may be told to “spin it”, meaning they simply need to take their formation and circle the ship to allow additional time for space to develop in the landing pattern so they can enter safely and land normally. Meet a wingman who does good deeds to neighbors in need by providing free lawn care and property maintenance to those unable to care for it themselves due to the challenges of life. His selfless service transforms the lives and local communities for those who are less fortunate.
