Mark 16:9-20 & New Testament Reliability

Sermon Audio

Play Episode Listen Later May 24, 2026

This Sunday's message will be very different than what we are used to. Our steady diet of preaching has been (and will continue to be) exposition through books of Scripture, verse by verse. However, along our journey through Mark's gospel, we occasionally noticed missing verse numbers (7:16; 9:44), and when we finished Mark 16:1-8, the next thing we saw was brackets around Mark 16:9-20 and a study note that says something to the effect of "the earliest manuscripts do not contain these verses." The easiest thing to do would be to simply make that statement, move on, and start preaching through another book. But this section offers a unique opportunity. Sunday, we will examine how God has reliably preserved His word down through time to us and look at the actual evidence for and against Mark's longer ending. Rather than just giving you my opinion about Mark's ending, I will walk you through the process of examining the evidence, which is not hidden or out of reach for Christians. With all the objections to textual corruption, books added to or taken out of the Bible, and the idea that we Christians depend on unknown scholars to tell us what is in our scriptures, I have three goals for Sunday. I hope to show you how the New Testament documents have been reliably passed down to us, let you see and examine the evidence concerning Mark's ending, and use this opportunity to address how we know the 66 books of our Bibles are the only God-inspired books. Accomplishing those three goals in under 40 minutes will be as miraculous as parting the Red Sea, so we certainly can't say everything that needs to be said, but in the end, we will see that God has preserved His Word in the Bible that you carry. The Bible you hold in your hand is God's Word, sufficient and God-breathed, so that you would know Him through the gospel of Jesus. I. Has God Reliably Preserved His Word In the NT? II. Examining Mark's Ending: Are we depending on "scholars" we don't know? III. How do we know the books in our Bibles are the only inspired books?

May 13, 2026Today's Reading: Numbers 10:11-36Daily Lectionary: Numbers 10:11-36; Luke 16:19-31 “And whenever the ark set out, Moses said, ‘Arise, O Lord, and let your enemies be scattered, and let those who hate you flee before you.' And when it rested, he said, ‘Return, O Lord, to the ten thousand thousands of Israel.'” (Numbers 10:35-36)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.In the Scriptures, God is locatable. Not the way you type a location into Google Maps. And it's not like you can slap an Apple AirTag on him or open the “find my phone” app to see where he's roaming. Nevertheless, in the Scriptures, God is findable. God locates himself. God dwells with his people. In the pillar of fire and smoke. In the tabernacle. Upon the ark. There, he's enthroned between the cherubim. There he's present with and for his people. In the Old Testament, the people of Israel spent a lot of time searching for God's presence and peace in all the wrong places—back in Egypt in slavery, in the golden calf in the wilderness, in the idols of Baal and the Asherah, or any other number of pseudo, self-made deities they foolishly put their trust in. The truth is, God is not hard to find. All you have to do is look where he promises to be, and where he promises to dwell, and where he declares that he is present with and for his people. In the Old Testament, God wasn't hard to find. He was in his house, the tabernacle, and later the temple. He was in his word and promise. He was in the sacrifices and the blood and the smoke and the fire for his people. In the New Testament, once again, God is locatable. He is born of the Virgin Mary. He is findable for he took on human flesh. God dwells with his people as one of his people, first in Mary's womb, then on the cross and in the tomb, and out alive again three days later. Sadly, like Israel, we spend a lot of time searching for God's presence and peace in all the wrong places: our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Our selfish loves, lusts, and longings for peace and joy apart from Christ. But thankfully, God is still locatable. Findable. He dwells with you and for you. No longer on the ark or in the pillar of smoke and fire. But on the altar. Enthroned between the flaming candles, seated in the bread and wine for you. Jesus dwells with you and for you, setting up a watery tabernacle of his own where he sends the Holy Spirit to dwell with you. Jesus is present with all of his promises for you in holy words, holy Baptism, and holy Communion. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Sing praise to the God of Israel! Sing praise for His visitation! Redeeming his people from their sin, Accomplishing their salvation, Upraising a mighty horn within The house of his servant David. (LSB 936:1)Rev. Experience by Design
Conscious Design and Built Environments with Itai Palti

Experience by Design

This last week of being back from Florence has given me a chance to reflect a bit on he experience of not just being in a foreign country, but being in a completely different kind of physical environment. By that I mean, the city of Florence, or more specifically a city where I was walking everywhere. The origins of Florence date back to around 59 BCE. From that time, the city has continuously grown and evolved to what it is today.  When you look at a map of Florence, you see a lot of twisty and windy streets that are built with cobblestones and buildings that run almost right up against them. From an accessibility standpoint, it presents a lot of challenges as I saw people being pushed in wheelchairs with great effort (or pulling suitcases for that matter). But beyond that, there is a quaintness and opportunity to be in a place where there are more people moving around than cars. Moving freely in a way that was unencumbered by traffic, being able to explore and discover, feeling a certain kind of vibrancy rooted in antiquity but lived in modernity. And now I am back in the exurbs, which has its own kind of design, whether it be intentional or just organic. Like Florence, homes and streets get built at different times. Some structures are destroyed and then rebuilt, green spaces created, land getting preserved, other land getting constructed.  It is not just a dance of history, but also the presence or absence of intentional design. To talk about designing cities, I welcome Itai Palti to the Experience by Design studios. Itai has a background in architecture and working as an architect. He also is the founder of the Centre for Conscious Design, “an international collective promoting the emergence of healthy built environments using Conscious Design principles.” Together they promote the Conscious Cities Movement, “a global movement that reimagines the built environment as an extension of ourselves and our communities.” We talk about how architecture can be about community empowerment, creating environments and structures that bring people together rather than drive them apart. Itai talks about the decline of serendipitous connections, especially in cultures that de-emphasize community and prioritize solitude. Between those poles is the need to find compromise in how we build lived environments. Itai also discussed the importance of using scientific insights into architectural design. We explore how architects need to balance client demands with their desire to create socially impactful design. Accomplishing this goal requires that more than architects be involved, leveraging the expertise from all disciplines to come together in constructive dialogue to combine knowledge to create better cities and communities. Thus, we talk about systems design as well, and how the built environment is a key element in experience design. After being in Florence for only a few days, which was enough time to enjoy a walkable environment, that is something I can attest to. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started. Lesley Logan 0:48  Hi, Be It babe. How are you? Happy Friday. Welcome to your first Friday in April. We did it. We're here. Ah, I'm currently in Europe, but still being inspired by you. And have some wins of yours to share, and couple wins of mine and and some inspiration and a mantra and something like that, right? Like, that's how this episode goes. And I'm just really grateful for you, to be honest. So the inspiration from the interwebs that I was like, oh my god, I have to tell the Be It babes, that's you. By the way, if you're listening, you're brand new here, hi. This is from @ucanoutdoors. I don't know what that means, @ucanoutdoors. That's what that means. Okay, how about that? Well, the link's in the show notes they shared this post, it has handwritten it says, your time on Earth is limited. Don't try to age with grace, age with mischief, audacity and a good story to tell from a healed life. I am obsessed. Let me say that one more time. Don't try to age with grace. Age with mischief, audacity and a good story to tell. Well, we've got some good stories for your guys to tell. Lesley Logan 1:45  So we always do a little win of yours. And so I got two from you guys. I was like, hey guys, I want some wins. You know you can send them in right? beitpod.com/questions where you can send your questions in and your wins in. And you know what you might need to hear your win from the past on a day that it comes up, because, like, sometimes we're just having a day, right? Like, I'll be honest, I woke up and today was a day, so I'm excited to be talking and recording with you, because today was just a day, and that's just because I had a crappy flight. More on that another moment. Okay, so @creative_soul_pilates, I got to hang out with a childhood friend and reconnect. It was so good for the soul. That's so fun a friend from childhood that you still hanging out with, that's amazing. I don't know that, but I have seen on TV, and it looks so delightful, I can totally see how that is for the soul.Lesley Logan 2:36  And I don't say that to be like, don't, don't feel sorry for me. Like, but I that those of you who have those childhood friends that like it's good for your soul, I love that for you, I think that is the cool. What a win that you guys could just evolve and grow and change and stay in touch with each other in a positive, supporting way. That means you're two badass humans. That's really what it means. All right, @meganlinney, she'd been on the pod before, by the way, she wrote, I've accomplished my greatest pivot and accelerated timing with like-minded people. Infinite wins. And I couldn't agree more, I've been watching from the sidelines. I'm so happy for you. You know, you really have, like, talk about no one, no one likes the word pivot anymore. I think it became the new the new word no one can hear. It's like, nailed on a chalkboard. But honestly, like, sometimes you need to do it. And when you do it, you want to do it like you did Megan, because you are absolutely a model for how to pivot with well, you know, like I started the podcast with audacity and a good story to tell. Lesley Logan 3:33  All right, my win. So two things. One, I don't think I've actually done this with you guys on a FYF. We're a top 1% podcast because of you. So thanks so much. I think I said it on one of the recap episodes, but I just want to make sure I say it here, in case you listen to these more, that's a huge win. That's like a five year in the making win, like, just absolutely wonderful, and without ads and without, you know, doing crazy, wild, clickbaity stuff. So just really proud that we could do it authentically and with you. And I felt like this because of you. My win is, okay, so I was like, I was having a great day. I was in Sacramento for like, what was supposed to only be, like, 30 hours, not even like I supposed to see 25 hours, and it turned it into 30 something hours. And that's because I was just like, having the best time. I was really proud of myself. I was even outgoing by myself at a bar at the lounge. Not my normal thing. I was allowing myself to, like, just enjoy, like, people watching and what was going on, and be part of it, and part of the Olympics and all this stuff. And, you know, it's just really great. And I was like, oh, look at me. I'm like, oh, on this plane, it's just gonna be so easy. And get on the plane, and we get down the runway, and I was like, okay, babe, I'll see you in an hour. Make sure you're on time. Don't be late. I don't want to go to bed late. And we don't take off, and we're just sitting there, and it's like, not great, it's like, what is happening? And they come on, and they go, okay, we have to reset the system. And I'm like, I don't know that I want to be on a plane, that they're resetting the system while I'm on the runway. What? So anyways, that didn't work. They turned us around and we got off, and they're like, okay, we're gonna figure out what's next. And I'm like, what's next? I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow, that took me three months to get you have got to get me home. Like, I don't know if I would have a good night's sleep at a hotel. You've got to get me home tonight. And so I sat there, but I tried to be really patient. I just like, I'm not going to be like, some Karen who is going to go up and yell, I'm just going to, like, sit here and be chill. I mean, I just had a great time at the bar, like, I'm just going to sit here and be chill. And I sat there long enough for them to say, okay, meet back at this gate in one hour. And I was like, I'm gonna take myself out to dinner now. So took myself out to dinner and got on the plane, and I just let myself, like, let I decided to see what it would be like if I didn't get upset about something. And it was quite nice. So it was annoying, it was frustrating. It was all the feelings. And I was just like, what if I just, like, enjoy that I have more time in an airport and I can have a burger and, like, you know, and I'll say, like, it meant that the night was really enjoyable. Brad picked me up and we had fun. I found this account that was like singing bad bunny songs with with the Spanish lyrics, so I could read the Spanish lyrics, but with English words, so that I could hear the English in the cadence of the words of bad bunny so that when I listen to the bad bunny songs in Spanish as they are intended, I am not just feeling the vibe and the joy of the music and the art. I'm actually like, I have like this. I can. I know what they're saying. I know what he's saying. I can, I can be in more joy. So I just let myself off some fun. Because what are you gonna do? Get mad about it. So I'm really proud about that. That's a I think that's an epic life win. Not gonna lie. Lesley Logan 6:50  All right, now for a mantra for you to end this amazing week, I hope, even if it was crap, because I don't look I don't know what's going on the world when you're listening to this, you know, I record these early. This is obviously in February. The Olympics are on. But you know, I hope that these episodes just are like a nice little like breaking your day, reminder that there's still a mantra that we can tell ourselves to just get ourselves through what's going on. So the responsibility for self-care is my own. The responsibility for self-care is my own. The responsibility for self-care is my own. You know, I don't, you know, I believe in that, you know I believe in that. I have a guest coming up on the pod, and we're gonna talk about how self-care is a system. And I, you know, I love that. I love me. My ADHD brain is loving me a system. So all right, loves, now, go have a great day. Share this podcast with a friend who needs to hear it. (Contact@eanvoiceit.com) New Anti-Conversion Laws in India According to Persecution.org Police in the northwestern Indian state of Rajasthan recently registered the first case under the state's recently enacted anti-conversion legislation against two missionaries. The Christians were accused of carrying out religious conversions at a gathering through “allurement,” according to media reports. After registering the case on Nov. 20, police issued notices to the two missionaries – Chandy Varghese from New Delhi and Arun John from Kota – claiming they promoted conversion and baptised several people during a three-day program known as ‘Spiritual Satsang' at Beersheba Church in Kota. Police investigated after videos and social media clips surfaced showing event speeches and activities. Several youths allegedly announced from the stage that they put their faith in Jesus Christ and were baptized, while calling upon others to adopt Christianity. Rajasthan is one of 12 states in India that has strict anti-conversion laws. A first information report (FIR) was registered by the police after complaints were lodged by hardline Hindu groups active in controlling Christian activities. 2 Thessalonians 3:2-3 That we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men; for not all have faith.  But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one. Safaa Yousif, who fled her native Sudan to Uganda due to conflict and religious persecution in 2016, received a text message from an anonymous number threatening to kill her family. Muslims from Somalia have also threatened her.  Yousif said she once gave discipleship classes to new converts, and a Somali Muslim who had put his faith in Christ was kidnapped and tortured by his co-religionists from Somalia and Sudan. Somalia is ranked 2nd on the Christian support group Open Doors 2025 World Watch List of the 50 countries where it is most difficult to be a Christian.  Its constitution establishes Islam as the state religion and prohibits the propagation of any other religion, according to the US State Department.  It also requires that laws comply with Sharia Principles, with no exceptions in application for non-Muslims. The threats on Yousif's family in Uganda were the latest of many instances of persecution of Christians in Uganda. An interesting fact to consider is that Uganda's constitution and other laws provide for religious freedom, including the right to propagate one's faith and convert from one faith to another.  Muslims make up no more than 12 percent of Uganda's population, with high concentrations in eastern areas of the country. Pray that the Yousif family be reminded of the words of Jesus in Acts 1:7-8 It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.  But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit as come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth. New hurdle in James Comey case The prosecution of former FBI Director James Comey hit another hurdle last Wednesday as the Justice Department encountered mounting questions about how the case was presented to a grand jury for indictment, reports the Associated Press. The development risked further jeopardizing a politically charged prosecution already subject to multiple challenges and demands for its dismissal. It came during a hearing in which Comey's lawyers asked U.S. District Judge Michael Nachmanoff to throw out the case on grounds that the government was being vindictive and as a separate challenge to Lindsey Halligan, the hastily appointed and inexperienced prosecutor who secured the indictment, is pending. The Justice Department's acknowledgment under questioning from a judge that the full grand jury did not review a copy of the final indictment is the latest indication of its seemingly disjointed pursuit of a criminal case against one of President Donald Trump's political enemies. Comey was fired by Trump in May 2017 while overseeing an FBI investigation into potential ties between Russia and Trump's 2016 campaign. The two have been publicly at odds ever since. New Exoskeleton Suit is Accomplishing Miracles At a Canadian wellness center, a unique robotic exoskeleton is allowing children with developmental disorders to walk-often for the first time. The nonprofit's Regina location in Canada is eager to get families to come and try it out.  It can be used to correct a child's gait or help them take their first steps, and is suitable for a variety of conditions including spinal cord injuries and cerebral palsy. Good News Network reports that the First Steps Wellness Center in Canada received the Trexo exoskeleton out of the goodness of someone's heart!  The $100,000 machine was donated to help children like Leo, a boy born with a rare genetic disease which left him a prognosis that walking would be impossible.  But, latched into the Trexo walker at First Steps, his mother Anna has watched her son learn to walk and develop a musculature that has him able to take steps on his own. ANNA: “He does a few steps right now by himself, and with Trexo, I'm pretty sure he'll be able to do more steps in the future, once we start using it more often.” There are currently 6 Trexo exoskeletons sold and in use today.  After a few sessions, how is Leo doing today? ANNA: “He can walk! You know, be part of everybody else, like walk like other kids. So, it's kind of- It's unique. He did amazing. I have butterflies. I can't believe [this] thing even exists!” Despite the 6 figure price tag it is the hope that more of the Trexo walkers will be made available in Canada and the US. What if the worst chapters of your life could become the foundation for your greatest impact? In this episode, Michael Dash, entrepreneur, author, and self-described "super connector," shares his remarkable journey from 20 years of addiction and a six-year legal battle to becoming a force for connecting entrepreneurs, building meaningful communities, and helping the formerly incarcerated rebuild their lives. Through two pivotal relationships (his entrepreneurial father and spiritual mentor Soleil Rad), Michael discovered how early business training and a transformed prayer practice could unlock his gift for creating life-changing connections. His mission? Bringing like-minded entrepreneurs together to create exponential impact while building the Impact Accelerator alongside Vince Covino and Satya. Michael reflects on how these mentors shaped his path at critical moments and why he believes authentic relationships and community (not transactional connections) are the keys to transforming both business and life.   [00:04:05] What Michael Does: The Super Connector Describes himself as a "super connector" who finds joy in introducing people from his network Runs Live Life Activated retreats focused on aligning entrepreneurs' physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual practices with their vision Has run six retreats over five years, resulting in three businesses, multiple lasting friendships, and relationships formed among participants Currently working with Vince Covino and Satya building the Impact Accelerator: matching impact-driven entrepreneurs with heart-centered investors [00:11:26] Background: From Recruiting to Retreats Spent 20 years in recruiting and staffing, running his own business for 13 years Natural training ground for being a super connector: "basically what you're doing is matchmaking" Lived in Tulum, Mexico for 4.5 years before recently relocating to Austin, Texas Now focused on the Impact Accelerator: training entrepreneurs to receive funding and matching them with investors who want to make an impact beyond just ROI [00:06:53] Connection Success Story: Winner's Circle Heath & Shelly Winter's Partnership: Heath: Tennessee-based entrepreneur, expert at writing and winning grants Shelly Winter: Served five years in prison for addiction, became #1 salesperson at Microsoft after they initially rescinded her offer due to her record Mission: Helping current inmates train while incarcerated and connecting them with companies willing to hire formerly incarcerated individuals Michael's insight: "Imagine if you were judged your entire life by the worst thing you ever did" Now part of the Impact Accelerator community [00:12:01] The Impact Accelerator Vision Bringing entrepreneurs looking for funding together with impact-driven investors Training entrepreneurs first: MVPs, what to ask for, technical requirements for funding Matching with "heart-centered investors": those who want ROI but also want to make the world better Philosophy: "Take a 10-year plan and make it a three-year plan" through strategic partnerships [00:15:10] The Million Dollar Question: A Key Distinction Michael's Perspective on "Life-Changing" Introductions: Challenges the premise: "I don't believe anybody can change your life except you" "Have I been introduced to people who have shifted my perspective, who have laid out another path that I could travel? Absolutely." Key insight: An experience is only life-changing if you take action afterward "It's really all about what each and every one of us actually does with that experience that can make it life-altering" [00:16:34] Pivotal Person #1: His Father The Entrepreneurial Foundation: Father was an entrepreneur who trained Michael from age 8 Worked in father's retail store and import/export business (collectibles: Swarovski, Baccarat, Waterford, Royal Doulton) Learned about sales, relationships, and "schmoozing" as a child Michael's reflection: "At the end of the day, they did the best with what they had" Their connection was through entrepreneurship and sales [00:19:08] Pivotal Person #2: Soleil Rad The Spiritual Transformation: Met in Tulum, Mexico while Soleil was running men's groups Men's work focused on expressing challenges, confronting shadows, sharing darkest secrets, and celebrating wins Reframed prayer as a partnership with God, not begging "Looking at God as a business partner": giving gratitude, asking for what you want, then showing God you're taking action [00:20:39] The Prayer Practice That Changed Everything Michael's New Approach: Training to be grateful throughout the day: for food, home, even rejections and setbacks "Be grateful the person just turned down the business deal. Be grateful I just got cut off. Be grateful the police pulled me over." Attitude of gratitude that "retrieves" the nervous system Philosophy: Training your vessel to receive the light from God [00:24:23] Kevin's Perspective: The Holy Spirit Connection Being a Vessel: Kevin shares story of Marcus Polls telling him: "This work you do is the Holy Spirit working through you" Realization that super connecting is about allowing yourself to be a vessel "Every conversation I have, I'm just here to be me and be the best steward I can" Partnership with God/Holy Spirit/Universe changes perspective on connecting [00:28:21] The Philosophy of Divine Connections Michael's Belief: "The right people are being brought to me for a reason. I don't need to know the reason now." Flow and keep building without attachment to knowing why Accomplishing more together than any individual can alone [00:30:41] Michael's Book: Chasing the High Chronicles his 20-year addiction journey and six-year legal battle Shares entrepreneurship journey and how he turned his life around Available on Amazon and Audible (Michael narrates the audiobook himself) Fair warning: "If you can handle a Jersey accent for four hours, get it on Audible" [00:31:37] Advice for the Shy: Step Into the Magic For Those Who Hesitate: Fear is what holds back the magic of connection If you're intimidated by someone, that's even MORE reason to introduce yourself Our minds are powerful: we can convince ourselves of anything (good, bad, or ugly) Honor your intuition: If it tells you to speak to someone, go speak to them Opening Questions That Work: Instead of "What do you do?" or "Where are you from?" Try: "What brings you joy in life?" Lead with inquisitive questions, not what you do If you struggle with questions, use ChatGPT for help [00:33:15] The Power of Questions Kevin's Story: At San Diego event, asked someone a question and spent the entire 15-minute break listening Person apologized for not learning anything about Kevin They became very good friends That same trip led to starting the Million Dollar Relationships Podcast KEY QUOTES "I don't believe anybody can change your life except you." - Michael Dash "Looking at God as a business partner." - Michael Dash "The right people are being brought to me for a reason. You know you're capable of more. There's a version of you that's healthier, more successful, and more fulfilled. Yet, you find yourself drifting, settling for a life that's just "good enough." Why? The answer is the seductive, quiet danger of the comfort zone.   In a compelling episode of the Personal Mastery Training podcast, the hosts tackle this very question. Their conclusion is clear: our limitless potential is only activated under pressure. While we seek comfort to feel safe, it's the very thing that numbs our ambition and leaves us vulnerable to the inevitable challenges of life. If you truly want to see what you're made of, you must stop avoiding pressure and start seeking it. Key Highlights from the Discussion Pressure Forges Your Potential: The core idea is simple: just as immense pressure and heat create diamonds from coal, life's challenges are what forge your character and unlock your true capabilities. Settling for "good enough" is choosing to remain a lump of coal. Comfort is a Numbing Agent: Your comfort zone isn't a refuge; it's a trap that dulls your senses and drains your energy. As the hosts explain, being on a mission and facing a challenge is what makes you feel awake, alive, and activated. Your Real Enemy is Change: You can't avoid challenges by staying comfortable, because change is constant and will disrupt your life regardless. Your health, relationships, and career will all face change. The only choice is whether you want to be a victim of change or get ahead of it by actively challenging yourself. Daily Challenges Build Unstoppable Momentum: Don't wait for a life-altering event. Dr. Charlie advises building momentum through small, daily challenges. Accomplishing a few key tasks every single day creates a positive feedback loop that makes bigger achievements feel inevitable. Ask Yourself: Don't You Deserve This?: At its heart, this is a matter of self-worth. Don't you deserve the opportunity to see what you're truly made of? You owe it to yourself to step into the arena and discover the person you could become if you gave it your all.   Stop waiting for life to happen to you. The comfort of "good enough" is a slow fade into regret. Instead, choose to live. Introduce a challenge into your life—start that workout, sign up for that class, take on that project. Put yourself under a little pressure and watch yourself transform into something brilliant.

This is a conversation to kick off the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. Retired U.S. Army Major General and history buff, Bill Rapp, drops some knowledge on how the colonies weren't exactly gung-ho for a full-blown revolution before April 1775. Turns out, they were mostly ticked off and feeling rebellious in response to intolerable British policies. But a tense situation and an itchy trigger finger set it off. The episode covers the action-packed Battles of Lexington and Concord, George Washington taking charge of the Continental Army, the intense Battle of Bunker Hill (which was actually fought on Breed's Hill), and the clever move at Dorchester Heights that sent the British packing from Boston. William “Bill” Rapp is a retired Major General of the United States Army with 33 years of distinguished service which included combat deployments in three wars, two Defense Service Medals, two Bronze Star Medals, Master Parachutist and Ranger tabs. He was not only a respected Army officer, but also a leadership developer who served as Commandant of the Army War College and Commandant of Cadets at the US Military Academy at West Point.  In over 42 months in combat, Bill led an airborne engineer company in the first Gulf War, commanded a 3,000-soldier brigade in the Iraq War, served as General Petraeus' personal assistant during the Iraq Surge, and commanded over 17,000 troops supplying all resource needs of the 160,000 U.S. and international force in Afghanistan in 2011-12. He also served as the Army's senior liaison to the U.S. Congress. Bill holds a PhD in Political Science from Stanford University and is the author of the book about the Boston Campaign of the American Revolutionary War titled Accomplishing the Impossible: Leadership That Launched Revolutionary Change. Host: Darryl S. Chutka, M.D. Guest: Christopher L. Camp, M.D. Being a healthcare clinician is an extremely rewarding occupation, but it can be stressful. Every year, we're asked to do more and more, the patients seem to get more challenging, and we get less time to spend with each one. A significant number of clinicians report emotional and psychological distress, and burnout remains a major problem in healthcare providers. This increased stress and pressure is not just unique to physicians, and these struggles are common for all of us, regardless of career or position. How do we remain in an optimally functioning state? Does our physical health affect our cognitive function? Given the obstacles we face, how do we continue to achieve joy and happiness in our work and our life while continue to meet the ever-growing demands of the world? These are questions my guest is hoping to answer in a project he's about to undertake on “Human Optimization”. My guest for this podcast is Christopher L. Camp, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist at the Mayo Clinic. We're going to discuss his project and why he decided to tackle this important topic.  Learn more about The Human Optimization Project: Mayo Clinic Talks: Human Optimization | Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development X: @MayoHumanOpProj Instagram: @Mayo_Human_Op_Prog Connect with Mayo Clinic Podcasts | Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development

“Nothing can add more power to your life than concentrating all your energies on a limited set of targets.” -Nido Qubein Most people live lives of constant distraction, never giving their full attention to one person or project. They're diffused and distracted. They dabble and dawdle.  Years ago, having a high IQ was a competitive advantage. Cal Newport, the author of the book Deep Work, has said, "Focus is the New IQ." Today, amidst all the distractions, if you can develop the ability to singularly focus on a task for a sustained period, you will have a competitive advantage. Nobody has achieved anything worthwhile without the ability and discipline to focus. Every great musician, athlete, or author has needed to give their singular attention to one thing, often and for extended periods.   Your ability to do great work, master a skill, and experience success is directly proportional to your ability to concentrate. And your ability to concentrate is directly proportional to your ability to eliminate distractions.

Welcome to Day 2561 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom – Theology Thursday – Destiny & Destination – I Dare You Not To Bore Me With The Bible. Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2561 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2561 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Today is the 42nd lesson in our segment, Theology Thursday. Utilizing excerpts from a book titled: I Dare You Not To Bore Me With The Bible written by Hebrew Bible scholar and professor the late Dr. Michael S Heiser, we will invest a couple of years going through the entire Bible, exploring short Biblical lessons that you may not have received in Bible classes or Church. The Bible is a wonderful book. Its pages reveal the epic story of God's redemption of humankind and the long, bitter conflict against evil. Yet it's also a book that seems strange to us. While God's Word was written for us, it wasn't written to us. Today's lesson is: “Destiny & Destination.” “I hope to see you in passing as I go to Spain,” Paul said while imprisoned. His ambitions are repeated a few verses later: “When therefore I have completed this ... I will leave for Spain by way of you” (Rom 15:28). It's certainly ambitious for him to be making travel plans. But Paul wasn't making casual conversation or planning a vacation. He believed his life and ministry would not end until he reached Spain. We aren't sure if Paul made it, but he was passionate about getting there. Why? He saw himself in the prophecy of Isaiah 66.   Day of Salvation Throughout his letters, Paul quotes Isaiah and other Old Testament books to show that the long-promised day of salvation would come during his lifetime. In the Old Testament, the Jewish belief in Jesus as the Messiah was preceded by something Paul referred to as “the fullness of the Gentiles” (Rom 11:25). In Romans 9-11, Paul says that Gentile (non-Jew) inclusion in the people of God was made possible by the hearts of the Jewish people being temporarily hardened (11:25-26). Accomplishing the mission of Gentile evangelism would undo this hardening. Only then would Paul's longing for the Jews to believe in Jesus come to full fruition. And only then would the deliverer (Jesus) come again from Zion (11:26). Isaiah 66:18-20 prophesies that the Lord would gather all nations to see His glory. He would give them a “sign” of His promised salvation. The sign would be delivered by Jewish exiles, sent by God into far-off nations—specifically, the lands of Tarshish, Put, Lud, Tubal, and Javan. The conversion of the Gentiles would result in the Jews from those nations returning to the Lord. The Sign Paul Saw Paul interpreted Isaiah 66 through Christian eyes. The “sign” (TH, 'ot,) was the virgin-born Jesus (compare Isa 7:14—“The Lord himself will give you a sign”).- At Pentecost, Jews whose ancestors were exiled to foreign nations came to Jerusalem from those nations. They witnessed a sign of the Holy Spirit coming upon the disciples, heard the gospel miraculously in their own language, and...
