One of the most famous acoustic guitars in rock history – Kurt Cobain's Martin D-18E – will go on show at the Royal College of Music Museum in London as part of a landmark exhibition exploring Nirvana's groundbreaking MTV Unplugged performance. Opening on 3 June 2025, the Kurt Cobain Unplugged exhibition will be the first time Cobain's iconic guitar has been shown in the UK. Booking for Kurt Cobain Unplugged opens on Wednesday, 30 April. Visitors can join the waitlist to be among the first to know when tickets go on sale and receive updates and event highlights related to the exhibition.   Kurt Cobain Unplugged exhibition delves into the musical legacy of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. It traces the remarkable journey of this iconic guitar, which became the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction in 2020 when it was bought for over $6 million by Australian entrepreneur Peter Freedman AM. Peter is the founder of RØDE Microphones, founding supporter of the Royal College of Music's Australia Commonwealth Scholarship and has generously loaned the guitar for this special exhibition. Peter Freedman commented: ‘When I purchased this guitar, my intention was to have it begin a worldwide tour of exhibitions, to support performing artists. I am delighted that this intent will be premiered at the Royal College of Music, London, with the first exhibition of its kind and will support talented musicians worldwide.'The exhibition also reunites the guitar with another piece of rock history – Cobain's famous olive-green mohair cardigan, worn during the 1993 Unplugged performance. This marks the first time these two legendary items have been displayed together.   Alongside these items, a carefully curated selection of Nirvana memorabilia will provide insight into the band's influence, Cobain's songwriting, and the enduring legacy of Nirvana and their MTV Unplugged performance. Key highlights of the exhibition also include:  A selection of Nirvana gig posters featuring a 90s punk/grunge aesthetic.A selection of collectible Nirvana vinyl in its original shrink wrap. The top portion of a Soundboard of another guitar from the same series. The exhibition has been curated by Alan di Perna – one of America's foremost rock journalists, and Royal College of Museum Curator Gabriele Rossi Rognoni. Alan di Perna's work has appeared in titles including Rolling Stone, Guitar World, Classic Rock and Billboard amongst others, and he has interviewed iconic artists including Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, Courtney Love and Pat Smear. Alan Di Perna says, ‘I'm delighted to be a part of the Royal College of Music Museum's first-ever rock music exhibition. MTV's Nirvana Unplugged in New York was a landmark event—a stand-out performance by a group that changed the course of rock history in the 1990s.'  Gabriele Rossi Rognoni hopes the Kurt Cobain Unplugged exhibition will extend the profile and reach of the work of the Museum and Royal College of Music, opening cross dialogues with students of different backgrounds and creating bridges between historical and contemporary music. He says: ‘One of the treasures in the collections of the Royal College of Music Museum is the world's oldest guitar. I am thrilled that this exhibition will build on our extraordinary heritage, connecting it with a monument of today's music such as Kurt Cobain. I look forward to the dialogues, musical encounters and new ideas that this exhibition will spark among our visitors and the top-class musicians that study at the College.'  A series of events will accompany the exhibition including new works and performances by RCM students inspired by the guitar alongside family friendly workshops and concerts. Surviving NIRVANA members - drummer Dave Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic and touring guitarist-turned-actual-band member Pat Smear reunited onstage last Thursday night (January 30th) during the FireAid benefit concert in LA for a previously-unannounced performance of several of Nirvana's classic songs. Filling the lead vocal slot vacated by Kurt Cobain's death almost 31 years ago were guest singers St. Vincent, Joan Jett, Kim Gordon and Violet Grohl, Dave's 18-year-old daughter. There's plenty of other occasions over the last 30-odd years where the Nirvana guys have played together as well, and with Youtube views of their FireAid performance already well into the millions, it doesn't feel disrespectful to ask the question; Is it time for a full-on Nirvana reunion? Just Passing Through Podcast

Send us a textEpisode 170You're born into a world you don't quite fit into. Aberdeen, Washington—blue-collar, gray skies, a town where dreams don't stretch much further than the sawmill. You're just a kid, quiet and sensitive, drawing pictures and listening to music. Then your parents split, and it shatters something inside you. You start to feel like you don't belong anywhere—not at home, not at school, not in your own skin. But then you hear music. The Beatles at first, then punk rock—loud, raw, unapologetic. It feels like someone has finally put words and sound to all the anger and pain boiling inside you. You pick up a guitar and teach yourself to play. It's not about being good; it's about feeling something, anything. You find a friend in Krist Novoselic, and together, you start a band. You call it Nirvana. For a while, it's simple. You're playing shows in dive bars, hauling your own gear, and living off scraps. It's dirty, exhausting, but real. You write songs about the things that gnaw at you—the hypocrisy of society, the weight of expectations, the deep ache you can't seem to escape. The words come easily because they're yours, ripped straight from your soul. Then comes Nevermind. You record it, not expecting much, and suddenly, the whole world is listening. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” blows up, and now everyone knows your name. They call you the voice of a generation, but you don't want to be anyone's voice. You don't even know how to speak for yourself half the time. The fame feels like a prison, the adoration suffocating. People want pieces of you—your music, your words, your pain—but you don't have enough of yourself to give. You find some escape in heroin. It numbs the physical pain—the chronic stomach issues no one can diagnose—but it also drowns out the noise in your head. You marry Courtney Love, and together, you burn bright and fast. She's as chaotic as you are, and you love her fiercely, even when the world tries to tear you both apart. When your daughter, Frances Bean, is born, you want to be better for her. But the darkness is always there, dragging you down.By the time In Utero comes out in 1993, you're exhausted. The album is raw and jagged, a deliberate rejection of the polished success of Nevermind. You want to tell the world, “This is who I am, not what you want me to be.” But the world doesn't listen. They keep asking for more, and you have nothing left to give.In the spring of 1994, you try to escape—to find peace, or maybe just silence. Rome, then Seattle. You write a note. You pick up a shotgun. And then, it's over. But you're still here, aren't you? In the music, in the words. Every time someone plays Nevermind or sings along to “All Apologies,” they're listening to you. And maybe, in some way, you've found what you were searching for all along: to be heard, to be understood, even if it's too late for you to hear it.Music:Smells Like Teen SpiritAll ApologiesSupport the showInsta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.comArtwork @digitalnomadicart on Insta

Exploring Washington State

In this episode of the Exploring Washington State podcast, Scott Cowan sits down with Wenatchee local and music enthusiast Joel Myrene for a lively conversation packed with nostalgia, community spirit, and a love of live music. Recorded in the historic Wenatchee Prosperity Lodge 301, Joel takes us on a journey from his punk rock roots to his mission of reviving Wenatchee's music scene today. Joel shares his story of growing up in Wenatchee, discovering punk rock through skateboarding, and organizing his first shows in unlikely venues like the Odd Fellows Hall and the old Fifth Street Armory. With a deep commitment to creating opportunities for younger musicians, Joel reflects on the thriving music culture of the 90s and how he's bringing that same energy back to Wenatchee with all-ages shows that inspire the next generation. We also dive into Joel's role in organizing the Apple Valley Record Expo, a passion project born from the region's hunger for vinyl and the absence of record stores within 90 miles. Joel recounts the challenges and triumphs of putting on this event, from coordinating vendors to drawing crowds hungry for rare finds. This episode is a love letter to Wenatchee, its creative spirit, and the power of music to connect generations. Whether you're a fan of punk rock, an aspiring musician, or someone curious about Wenatchee's evolving arts scene, this conversation will leave you inspired and itching to attend the next local show.

This week we're discussing every album by Flipper. While known to many as a huge influence to bands like Nirvana and the Melvins, Flipper are a punk band unlike any other. They're as amazing as they are terrible, but completely unique and bizarrely innovative. After founding member and bassist/vocalist Will Shatter died in 1987, they've gone through various breakups and reunions, even as far as recruiting Nirvana's Krist Novoselic and the Jesus Lizard's David Yow. What Happened Next: a podcast about newish books

My guest on this episode is Carl Wilson. Carl is the music critic at Slate and also writes for The Globe and Mail, Hazlitt, The New York Times Magazine and many other online and print publications. His work has been included in two of Da Capo Books' annual Best Music Writing collections. Carl's first book was Let's Talk about Love: A Journey to the End of Taste, which Carl himself describes as being about “aesthetic conflict, class, and Céline Dion.” That book was originally published in 2007 by Bloomsbury as part of the 33 1/3 series of books about popular music. An expanded edition was published in 2014 that included essays by  Nick Hornby, Krist Novoselic, Ann Powers, Mary Gaitskill, Sheila Heti and others, as well as a new afterword by Carl. The LA Review of Books said that  "Let's Talk About Love...is not just a critical study of one Céline Dion album, but an engaging discussion of pop criticism itself." Carl and I, of course, talk about Céline's recent performance at the Paris Olympics, about the unlikely popular and academic success of Let's Talk About Love, and about the two book-length works he wants to complete—one a biography of a beloved writer and singer-songwriter, the other an argument for the legitimacy of crying as a critical response to great art. This podcast is produced and hosted by Nathan Whitlock, in partnership with The Walrus. Music: "simple-hearted thing" by Alex Lukashevsky. Used with permission.

Nirvana's landmark album “Nevermind,” released in 1991, is a cornerstone of the grunge movement and a pivotal moment in rock history. The trio, consisting of Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl, created a raw yet melodic sound that captured the angst and disillusionment of a generation. Under the masterful production of Butch Vig, the album achieved a polished yet powerful sound, making it accessible to a wider audience while retaining its edge. “Nevermind” is crucial not only for its commercial success but also for its profound influence on the music industry, bringing alternative rock into the mainstream and solidifying Nirvana's legacy as one of the most influential bands of all time. ********************** NEW BONUS CONTENT FOR PATREON SUBSCRIBERS! Ahhh, vinyl records. For audiophiles and other assorted music nerds (know any of them!?!), it's the passport to sonic bliss. For others, it's an archaic, delicate, noisy and inconvenient medium. Whatever side of the fence you're on, there are albums that you gotta experience on vinyl - whether it be for the sound quality, the artwork, the liner notes, the overall presentation, or maybe it's not available digitally. Remarkably, decades after the format was declared all but dead and buried, it has experienced a huge resurgence in popularity. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the commercial vinyl LP, In The Groove: The Vinyl Record and Turntable Revolution from Motorbooks is an authoritative and visual celebration of the history and culture of record collecting and turntables, from the first 78 to the explosive growth of vinyl in the last decade, with entertaining sidebars highlighting classic record stores, legendary labels and iconic artwork. Designed to satisfy readers from the most discerning of collectors to those new to the passion, In The Groove gathers five of the finest music scribes to contribute a chapter each. One of those writers (covering record stores) is our Third Lad this week, Gillian Gaar. Gillian G. Gaar is a Seattle-based author. Her first book, She's A Rebel: The History of Women in Rock & Roll was published in 1992. In addition to her own books, she has appeared in various anthologies, including The Nirvana Companion, Trouble Girls: The Rolling Stone Guide to Women in Rock, Nirvana: The Complete Illustrated History, Leonard Cohen on Leonard Cohen: Interviews and Encounters, Goldmine: The Beatles Digest (volumes one and two), The Best of the Beatles Book, The Stranger Guide To Seattle, 33 1/3 Greatest Hits Vol 2, A Survey of American Culture, and various editions of The Scribner Encyclopedia of American Lives, among others. She was editorial assistant for Krist Novoselic's book From Grunge To Government: Let's Fix This Broken Democracy! She was also a project consultant/liner note writer for Nirvana's box set "With The Lights Out." She has written for numerous magazines, including Rolling Stone, Mojo, Q, Goldmine, The Seattle Times, The Stranger, Option, and No Depression, and was a senior editor at Seattle music paper The Rocket. It was Nirvana's first release on a major label and the first to feature drummer Dave Grohl.Produced by Butch Vig, Nevermind features a more polished, radio-friendly sound then the band's prior work. Recording took place at Sound city studio in Van Nuys, California, and smart studios in Madison Wisconsin in May and June -91, with mastering being completed in August of that year st The Mastering Lab, California.Written primarily by frontman Kurt Cobain, the album is noted for channeling a range of emotions, being noted as dark, humorous, and disturbing. Thematically, it includes anti-establishment views, anti-sexism, Frustration, alienation and troubled love inspired by Cobain's broken relationship with Bikini kill's Toby Vail. Contrary to the popular hedonistic themes of drugs and sex at the time, writers have observed that Nevermind re-invigorated sensitivity to mainstream rock. According to Cobain, the sound of the album was influenced by bands such as Pixies, R.E.M, The Smithereens, and the Melvins. While the album is considered a cornerstone of the grunge genre, it is noted for its musical diversity, which includes acoustic ballads ("Polly" and "´Something in the way") and Punk-inspired Hard Rock("Territorial Pissings" and "Stay Away"). Nevermind became an unexpected critical and commercial success, charting highly on charts across the world. By January 1992, it reached number one on the US Billboard 200 and was selling approximately 300,000 copies a week. The lead single "Smells like teen spirit" reached the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100 and went on to be inducted into the Grammy hall of fame. Its video was also heavily rotated on MTV. Three other successful singles were released: "Come as you Are", "Lithium", and "In Bloom". The album was voted the best album of the year in Pass & Jop critics' poll, while "Smells Like Teen Spirit" also topped the single of the year and video of the year polls. The album also garnered the band three Grammy Award nominations in total across the 34th and 35th Grammy Awards, including Best Alternative music album. AwardsHere cometh thine shiny awards Sire. My Lord Tucker the Wanker second Earl of Wessex. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it. When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily that I should have been in that band—or at least a Pixies cover band. We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard."When Cobain presented the song to his bandmates, it comprised just the main guitar riff and the chorus vocal melody. Cobain said the riff was "clichéd", similar to a riff by Boston or the Richard Berry song "Louie Louie". Bassist Krist Novoselic dismissed it as "ridiculous"; in response, Cobain made the band play it for an hour and a half. Eventually, Novoselic began playing it more slowly, inspiring drummer Dave Grohl to create the drum beat, which drew from disco artists like The Gap Band. As a result, it is the only song on Nevermind to credit all three band members as writers. 2) "In Bloom" Written by Kurt Cobain 4:14 Released November 30, 1992 "In Bloom" was released as the album's fourth and final single in November 1992-The lyrics are just making fun of listeners who don't understand what Cobain is talking about. Never realized that.-I like to visualization and juxtaposition of the clean cut 50's style band to them wearing dresses and tearing everything up.-According to the 1993 Nirvana biography Come As You Are by Michael Azerrad, "In Bloom" was originally written about "the jocks and shallow mainstream types" of the underground music scene the band began to find in their audience after the release of their 1989 debut album, Bleach. In his biography of Cobain, Heavier Than Heaven, Charles R. Cross asserted that the song was a "thinly disguised portrait" of Cobain's friend Dylan Carlson. 3) "Come As You Are" Written by Kurt Cobain 3:38 Released March 2, 1992 as the second single from Nevermind.-Great song, all of the intros are very catchy and pull you in.-Interesting visuals in the music video... Lots of sperm swimming around and flowing water.-The origin of the song's title is unclear, but Charles R. Cross speculated the song may have been named after a motto used by the Morck Hotel in Cobain's hometown of Aberdeen, Washington. The Morck was one of many places Cobain stayed in after leaving home for a time while he was seventeen years old 4) "Breed" written by Kurt Cobain 3:03 Released September 24, 1991-Much heavier sound than the previous tracks. High energy and poppy.-Reading the lyrics, it is a bunch of just nonsense.-Lyrically, the song addresses themes of teenage apathy and fear within the American middle-class. Stevie Chick of Kerrang wrote that lyrics such as "We can plant a house, we can build a tree" displayed Cobain's "gift for crafting witty, purposeful nonsense. 5) "Lithium" written Kurt Cobain 4:16 Released July 13, 1992 as the third single from Nevermind.-Very chilled vibe from the previous tracks-It's still got a LOT of energy in the YEAH parts that gets hard.-As Cobain explained, "In the song, a guy's lost his girl and his friends and he's brooding. He's decided to find God before he kills himself. It's hard for me to understand the need for a vice like [religion] but I can appreciate it too. People need vices.” 6) "Polly" written by Kurt Cobain 2:57 Released September 24, 1991-Very downtrodden song. considering the content, not surprising.-This is a really dark song. Jesus.-Cobain wrote "Polly" about an incident in Tacoma, Washington involving the abduction and rape of a 14-year-old girl in August 1987. Gerald Arthur Friend kidnapped the girl while she was leaving a rock concert, suspended her upside down from a pulley in his mobile home and raped and tortured her with a blow torch. She managed to escape by jumping from his truck at a gas station, attracting attention from surrounding people. Arthur was later arrested and convicted for his crimes. Cobain's addition to the story was to have the victim fool the kidnapper into thinking she was enjoying what he was doing to her, causing him to let his guard down long enough for her to escape.-In his Nirvana biography Come As You Are, journalist Michael Azerrad noted that rape seemed to be a consistent theme in Cobain's songs and interviews, as if Cobain was "apologizing for his entire gender." However, Cobain explained, "I don't feel bad about being a man at all. There are all kinds of men that are on the side of the woman and support them and help influence other men. In fact, a man using himself as an example toward other men can probably make more impact than a woman can". 7) "Territorial Pissings" written by Kurt Cobain and Chet Powers. 2:22-Very punk and heavy.-I have no idea how Kurt would be able to perform this song live... It hurts my voice hearing his guttural screams.-this song is a two-and-a-half-minute punk lambasting of the typical "Macho Man." In addition to being about sexism, the song is also about the way Kurt Cobain saw Native Americans treated around his home town of Aberdeen, Washington. 8) "Drain You" written by Kurt Cobain 3:43 Released September 24, 1991 as a promotional single-
Good song, musically in the same category as the more popular Nirvana tracks. Heavy, but simple and poppy.-The strangest "love" song I've ever heard.-In the 1993 Nirvana biography Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana, Michael Azerrad described "Drain You" as "a love song, or rather a song about love," in which the babies in the lyrics "represent two people reduced to a state of perfect innocence by their love." Cobain told Azerrad that the lyrics made him think of "two brat kids who are in the same hospital bed." The song's imagery predicted the medical themes that would feature heavily in the lyrics of Nirvana's following album, In Utero.-According to the 2001 Cobain biography Heavier Than Heaven by Charles Cross, "Drain You" was one of "a half dozen...memorable songs" Cobain wrote following his break-up with American musician, Tobi Vail, in November 1990. Cross described the lyric, "It is now my duty to completely drain you," as "both an acknowledgement of the power [Vail] had over [Cobain] and an indictment." 9) "Lounge Act" written by Kurt Cobain 2:36-Super bass heavy.-It reminds me of Offspring sound-This is a song about heartache in a relationship.-The title comes from the fact that Nirvana thought that the bass intro sounded like something a cheesy lounge band would use.-This is the only song Kurt Cobain admitted was about his much maligned ex-girlfriend, Tobi Vail. 10) "Stay Away" written by Kurt Cobain 3:32-Very punk inspired-Pretty simple and to the point; confusion and agitation, easier to push people away than try to explain things to them.-Again, no idea how he would be able to sing anything else after this song. Dang.-Originally titled Pay To Play, this song appears to be about many things, including annoyance ("stay away"), lack of popularity ("I'd rather be dead than cool"), and predictability in people ("every line ends in a rhyme"). 11) "On a Plain" written by Kurt Cobain 3:16. Released on the album in September 1991, released as a promotional single in 1992.-Very much in the vein of the other tracks. Again, somewhat nonsensical, but still angsty and full of energy-Good track, I remember the single.-In a July 1993 interview in New York City, Cobain told English journalist Jon Savage that "On a Plain" was about "classic alienation, I guess," although he then noted he had to change his explanation every time he was asked about the meaning to his songs, saying that his lyrics were largely taken from "pieces of poetry thrown together," and that his poetry was "not usually thematic at all." 12) "Something in the Way" written by Kurt Cobain 3:52-Very downtrodden and depressing-Very heavy and moody-Doesn't have the explosive energy the other tracks did. But it's still solid and full of feeling.-Never released as a single and never a consistent part of the band's live setlist, "Something in the Way" charted for the first time in August 2020, after appearing in the first trailer for the 2022 superhero film, The Batman. The song peaked at number two on Billboard's US Rock Digital Songs Sales chart, and number five on their US Alternative Digital Songs Sales charts.[2] It also reached the top 20 in both Amazon Music's and iTunes' digital music charts-Cobain himself suggested that the song was not necessarily autobiographical, telling Nirvana biographer Michael Azerrad that the lyrics were "like if I was living under the bridge and I was dying of AIDS, if I was sick and I couldn't move and I was a total street person. That was kind of the fantasy of it". 13) "Endless, Nameless" written by Kurt Cobain-Very heavy and chaotic-I honestly don't know if I've ever heard this one before, but I'm not a fan of it... I don't like jam bandy type music. Sounds like they're just making noise.-According to Come As You Are, Cobain himself was unsure of what he was singing during the performance, but believed the lyrics included the lines, "I think I can, I know I can."-According to author Chuck Crisafulli, the song's placement on Nevermind was in part inspired by the use of hidden tracks by the Beatles, such as "Her Majesty" on their 1969 album, Abbey Road. **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** **REVIEW AND RATING** TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4color out of space5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2. This week we look to the stars for inspiration for our show theme. Oh yeah! We are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. A band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. We dive into some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn't break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we talk exclusively about Supergroups featuring famous solo artists and band members along with, Offshoots which are bands that contain the bulk of a previous incarnation of a famous band. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new.Songs this week include:Screaming Lord Sutch - “Wailing Sounds” from Lord Sutch & Heavy Friends (1970)Living Loud - “Last Chance” from Living Loud (2004)SuperHeavy - “I Can't Take It No More” from SuperHeavy (2011)Contraband - “Loud Guitars, Fast Cars, & Wild, Wild Livin'” from Contraband (1991)Flint - “Better You Than Me” from Flint (1978)Gogmagog - “I Will Be There” from I Will Be There (1985)Spys4Darwin - “Dashboard Jesus” from microfish (2001)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

What the Riff?!?
1992 - January: Nirvana “Nevermind”

What the Riff?!?

The album that would bring grunge into the mainstream is Nevermind by Nirvana.  While it was Nirvana's second album, it would be their first on a major label.  It would also see the introduction of Dave Grohl to the band as drummer joining Krist Novoselic on bass, and the iconic and troubled Kurt Cobain who was front man, guitarist, and songwriter for the band.“Troubled” could be a good description of the album as well.  While more polished than their debut album, the songs exhibit a raw emotion, often dark, disturbed, or alienated, but also containing some humor and self-deprecation.  The tracks were more melodic than the first album as well, reflecting Cobain's influences - he was listening to groups like the Pixies and R.E.M. at the time that Nevermind was being recorded.  The album was a surprising success both commercially and critically.  It was nominated for three Grammy awards across two awards ceremonies.  It hit number 1 on the Billboard 200 list in the U.S., hit number 2 on the Australian charts, and number 7 on the British charts.Nevermind was released in September 1991, and friend of the show John Lynch is featuring it as our album pick for January 1992 when it was on top of the charts, knocking off Michael Jackson's Dangerous.  LithiumLithium is a drug used to fight depression and bi-polar disorder.  The lyrics discuss a person trying to fight loss of relationships, wide mood swings and feelings, deciding that he needs to find God before he kills himself.  The alteration between soft and loud sections would become known as emblematic of Nirvana's sound.   PollyThis dark song was inspired by the abduction, torture, and rape of a 14 year-old girl in Tacoma, Washington.   She escaped from her kidnapper at a gas station.  Cobain wrote the lyrics from the perspective of the perpetrator.  Former percussionist Chad Channing is the drummer on this piece.Something in the WayThis song was inspired by a four-month period of homelessness that Cobain experienced around his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington.  It is one of the few autobiographical songs Cobain wrote, as he more typically wrote lyrics inspired in stores from others.  It is featured in the 2022 film, “The Batman.” Come As You AreThis hit single almost resulted in a lawsuit from a band called “The Killing Joke” which had a very similar chord structure.  The lyrics are about the expectations people put on themselves and others, and it encourages people to be themselves.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television comedy series “In Living Color”This comedy variety production from the Wayan brothers would introduce the world to sketches “Men on Film, “Homey the Clown,” and “Fire Marshal Bill” which launched Jim Carrey's career. STAFF PICKS:There's No Other Way by BlurWayne starts us off with London based Blur exhibiting the “Manchester” sound.  The song lyrics highlight the irritation the band felt at having to follow the Manchester trend at the behest of the record company.  “You've taken the fun out of everything.”   This song was Kurt Cobain's favorite song of the year from Britain.Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me by George Michael and Elton JohnRob brings us George Michael's live cover of Elton John's 1974 hit.  John joins Michael on stage in the second half of the song during this performance in Chicago.  They had originally performed the duet for Live Aid, and Michael liked it so much that he incorporated the cover into his show.  The original version made it to number 2 in the U.S., and this cover made it to number 1.Diamonds and Pearls by Prince and the New Power GenerationBrian's staff pick is a love song.  It is also the title track to Prince's album with the backing band which was originally named on the 1990 film “Graffiti Bridge.”  The female voice in this song is performed by Rosie Gaines, who tragically suffered from an insulin overdose in 2009, and has experienced a number of diabetic issues over time.No Son of Mine by GenesisJohn Lynch features the final Genesis album with Phil Collins as lead singer, "We Can't Dance."  The lyrics discuss domestic violence.  It is about a man who is a monster to his family.  The song describes a child who runs away from an abusive family situation, and is rejected by his father when he attempts reconciliation later on. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:New Recruit by Eric ClaptonThis instrumental track is from the motion picture "Rush."
