This goes out to all the boss ladies out there! And it's about the boss lady who was the first millionaire in U.S. history. Did you know that Madam CJ Walker hosted one of her first Mary Kay-like conventions in 1917? Do you know what date that was in history? Just on the heels of the so-called “Spanish Flu” the only other pandemic in American history, and much like the #bossbabes of today, she had to weather the storm with her business during her era's own #covid19. Other “did you knows”? Alex Hailey of the legendary book turned mini-series Roots was the first to option the story of Madam Walker, but he died before he could produce it. Maya Angelou was one of the names floated to play in the movie. Ooooooohhhh... it gets deeper! This conversation with @aleliabundles will blow your mind! She is the author behind the book that inspired the @Netflix original #SelfMade with Octavia Spencer and Blair Underwood! And you know that series came with its own controversies. Hear about them straight from the source and why composite characters may work for Hollywood, but not always for the good of black history. It streams later today on The Culture Soup Podcast®.

The book behind the new Netflix series, starring Octavia Spencer 'One of the most fabulous African-American figures of the twentieth century' Ishmael Reed Madam Walker was the first free-born child in her family, growing up in abject poverty in post-Civil War America. From humble beginnings, she overcame societal prejudice, family betrayals and epic business rivalries to pioneer cosmetics that revolutionised black hair care, build a beauty empire, and become one of the wealthiest self-made women in America. Not only an astute businesswoman, but a passionate activist and philanthropist, Madam Walker provided jobs and training for thousands of African American women across the country, and used her wealth to fight for equality, forming friendships with important civil rights voices such as W. E. B. Du Bois, Booker T. Washington and Ida B. Wells-Barnett along the way. Drawn from more than two decades of research by her great-great-granddaughter, journalist and historian A'Lelia Bundles, Self Made is the definitive biography of Madam Walker's inspirational life and an illuminating insight into the larger African American struggle in the early twentieth century.

On today’s show, I interview A’Lelia Bundles. She is African American haircare royalty. I spoke to A’Lelia just days before the 152nd birthday of her great-great grandmother, Madam C. J. Walker. I’d heard of Madam Walker, the first documented, self-made black millionaire, who built a haircare empire in the early 1900s. What self-respecting black person hasn’t? But, I didn’t know about A’Lelia until my Delta Sigma Theta Sorority sister and Hair! How I Grew It guest, Tamika Felder, suggested I reach out to her. Thank you, Soror! Listen to Hair! How I Grew It episode seven to hear Tamika share her journey back to natural hair, which includes lots of laughs, some lowcountry history and sobering cancer and hair talk. Born in Chicago and raised in Indianapolis, A’Lelia has been natural for most of her life. She is a journalist, historian and Madam C. J. Walker biographer. Even though we’d never met before I contacted her, she didn’t hesitate to say yes to sharing her hair journey, and I am so grateful. So far, Hair! How I Grew It has featured sistahs typically talking about traumatic childhood hair experiences, like hot comb and chemical relaxer burns. A’Lelia didn’t go through any of that. Early on in our conversation, she fondly recalled her mom’s gentle touch.
