Send us a textStepping into the spotlight this week is our very own Max Fosberg, fresh from his graduation at Seattle Film Institute. In this deeply personal conversation, Max opens up about the transformative journey of pursuing film education in his mid-thirties—a decision that initially felt "almost silly" but ultimately proved profoundly rewarding. The discussion reveals fascinating insights into the practical realities of student filmmaking, where location often dictates creative direction. "I think the first thing that I figured out for each idea was location," Max shares, explaining how his vampire film "Nightstock" grew from having access to a park, while other projects emerged from available spaces like a brewery. This resourcefulness represents the true spirit of independent filmmaking.Beyond technical skills, Max reflects on how film school reshapes one's relationship with cinema itself. He now studies lighting with particular fascination, noting how flat lighting in CGI-heavy productions often diminishes visual impact compared to the masterful shadow work in classics like Sidney Lumet's "Fail Safe." The conversation explores the vulnerability required when sharing creative work, the collaborative magic of production days, and how acting experiences enhanced his ability to communicate with performers.Perhaps most moving is Max's recognition that the relationships formed during this journey matter most. From his Film Institute cohort to the broader Seattle film community, these connections have become the true measure of success. "It's not about the movies," he reflects. "It's really about the relationships." As Max prepares for new adventures in Los Angeles, his story serves as powerful inspiration for anyone considering their own creative leap—regardless of when in life that call comes. What makes a truly successful filmmaker? Listen as we explore how passion, persistence, and people create the foundation for meaningful work in this challenging industry.Support the show

This episode was recorded live at e-flux on September 19, 2024. The event, hosted by the African Film Institute, featured a screening of Lumumba (2000, 115 minutes) by Haitian director Raoul Peck, followed by a conversation between Feza Kayungu Ramazani of Centre D'art Waza and anthropologist Natacha Nsabimana. Feza Kayungu Ramazani is an artist and researcher based in Lubumbashi. She is a member of the Power to the Commons project and Another Roadmap of Arts Education Africa Cluster (ARAC), which is a network of researchers and practitioners engaged in collaborative research revisiting the history, politics, and alternative practices in arts education through literature. She is also curatorial assistant at École du soir, administrator of Centre d'art Waza, and a critical writer questioning images of African beauty and exoticism. Her research on African values, creativity, ancestral practices, and technology aligns with a desire to reinvent the conception and conservative function of museums in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Natacha Nsabimana teaches in the anthropology department at the university of Chicago. Her research and teaching interests include postcolonial critique, musical movements, and the cultural and political worlds of African peoples on the continent and in the diaspora. The African Film Institute aims to create a home and a place of intimacy with African cinema in New York, through developing gradually and organically a viewing program animated by fellowships; a growing library; an active writers' room; and an expanding catalog of recorded dialogs. The African Film Institute draws from the visual cultures that view cinema as an evening school: a popular information system in the service of education, aesthetic experience, and public dissemination—employing a methodology concerning the use of cinema's collective production, and investing in viewing methods informed by different uses of time, visual and textual histories, and social struggles and hopes in mutuality between their own locality and the world at large. The African Film Institute is convened by Christian Nyampeta and hosted by e-flux Screening Room.

Renowned actor William McNamara, an alumnus of the esteemed Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, has left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry with a diverse career spanning over one hundred and sixty-five film and television appearances. McNamara's journey in the world of cinema began with memorable roles, including that of Joel in the teen movie "Dream a Little Dream" (1989), where he shared the screen with Corey Feldman and Corey Haim. Shortly after, he showcased his acting prowess in the Bette Midler film "Stella" (1990). The nineties marked a period of exceptional performances for McNamara, solidifying his reputation as a versatile actor. Notable among his works is the role of Derek Wolfe Jr in the Ernest R. Dickerson manhunt thriller "Surviving the Game" (1994), where he starred alongside veteran actors such as F. Murray Abraham, Gary Busey, Rutger Hauer, and John C. McGinley. In the same year, McNamara teamed up with Gary Busey and Tom Berenger in the Navy comedy "Chasers" (1994), directed by Dennis Hopper, showcasing his comedic talents. However, it was his chilling portrayal of Peter Foley, the copycat serial killer, in the psychological thriller "Copycat" (1995) that stands as one of his most prized performances. The film also featured Sigourney Weaver, Dermot Mulroney, and jazz musician Harry Connick Jr. McNamara continued to captivate audiences with roles in "Stag" (1997), alongside Andrew McCarthy and John Stockwell, and the World War II drama "The Brylcreem Boys" (1998), opposite Gabriel Byrne. The actor's career began with a bang in acclaimed cult horror director Dario Argento's slasher classic, "Opera" (1987), and since then, he has proven his mettle in various genres. Beyond his on-screen achievements, William McNamara is recognized for his philanthropic efforts as a kind spiritualist and avid animal rights activist. He passionately supports the cause of dolphins and small whales off the shores of Japan, contributing both time and resources. McNamara is also actively involved in animal rescue initiatives, Kundalini, and Yoga. Much like his co-star Henry Rollins in "Time Lapse" (2001), McNamara goes beyond the screen, actively championing causes close to his heart and embodying a commitment to making a positive impact. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/steven-cuoco/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/steven-cuoco/support

Kathrine Barnes Co-Stars in the New BET+ Series, 'Average Joe', which premiered last night following the BET Awards. The BET Awards aired on almost every single Paramount Global owned cable station, including Nickelodeon, which was quite confusing, but what wasn't confusing is that Barnes had such an impact on the BET executives that her character was extended to 7 or the 10 episodes during the first season. Barnes has been seen on such TV shows like, 'Queer As Folk', 'Candy' and the Sundance film, 'The Glorias', as well as, 'Moonshot: Faceless After Dark and Walden.' She has also appeared on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, Christmas Special, 'Adult Swim Yule Log.' A mega Julie Andrews fan, Barnes was only slightly impressed that I knew of Andrews' film, 'SOB', which shed her Mary Poppins image in the early 1980s. However, she did talk about her architect sister and where she would throw a, "Don't you know who I am?" celebrity style tantrum once she is more readily recognized. Barnes is also a Co-founder & Producing Partner at Vernal & Sere Theatre, she recently partnered with the Luis Buñuel Film Institute to mount the world-premiere stage adaptation of Buñuel's 1962 surrealist masterpiece, The Exterminating Angel, in which she played Silvia, the Duchess of Avila. In the series 'Average Joe',Barnes co-stars with leading man, Deon Cole, Tammy Townsend, Cynthia McWilliams, Malcolm Barrett and many others. Kathrine plays the recurring role (7-8 episodes out of 10) of 'Arina' which is nicknamed, "The Chameleon," a former KGB assassin and enforcer for the Russian mob who is dragged out of retirement and back into the world of fighting for her life in Pasha Lychnikoff's world. 'Average Joe', which premiered on BET's new streaming service BET+ last night following the BET Awards. 'Average Joe' will stream once a week for the next 10 weeks on Sunday nights. Unlike many, Jaime chose to break from the Broadway scene early in his career, setting his sights on the silver screen. He is geared up to producer his feature film script entitled: "NOT JUST AN ORDINARY GIRL." I'm your host, Kerry Ruff and today, we are incredibly fortunate to have a special guest whose work spans over a quarter of a century in the industry. Our guest today is none other than the phenomenal Mr. Jaime Perry. Jaime's acting roots are deeply embedded in the rich soil of the Joseph Papps New York Shakespeare Public Theatre, where he made his first appearance in Elizabeth Swados' play, "Runaways", starring opposite the likes of Diane Lane and Trini Alvarado at a tender age. But before he delved into film, he took a pause to focus on his education at The City University of New York, studying film and screenwriting. Here, his talent shone brightly as he not only starred in, but also co-produced a thesis film, "Familiar Differences", which took home all three Diamond Awards for Directing, Acting, and Best Short Film. With his Bachelor of Arts degree in hand and a slew of awards under his belt, Jaime headed to the City of Angels to hone his directing skills at the renowned American Film Institute. His impressive filmography includes standout performances in films like "The Message", "Warriors", "Jacob's Ladder", and notably, starring opposite music legend Michael Jackson and acclaimed actor Wesley Snipes in the Martin Scorsese film, "BAD". Not only is Jaime a talented actor and director, but he is also a dedicated student of his craft. He's studied method acting with Lee Strasberg at the Lee Strasberg Theater & Film Institute and HB Studios in New York. Jaime also ventured into television, playing a recurring role on "New York Undercover" and making several other guest appearances on network television. His body of work is both diverse and impressive. From the stage to the silver screen, to behind the camera, Jaime's contributions to the industry are truly remarkable. As we binge through our favorite shows, watch that go-to comfort movie for the 150th time, and curiosity scroll through the protagonists' real life social media pages, we often find ourselves wondering what the actor life is like. Daydreaming about how we would be in front of the camera for the whole world to see. Working alongside people that we have been enthralled and entertained by. Forgetting that most of the individuals we love and love to hate through our endless streams have had to fight and claw to the position they are in. This week on The Malliard Report, we get a rare chance to pull back that curtain and see just how life as an actor really…plays out… with special guest Sean Dillingham. Sean Dillingham “…has appeared in over 135+ commercials and 70+ films and 25 national television series. He's had network television appearances on Operation REPO, Discovery ID, Buried in the Backyard, The NightShift, Longmire, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, This is Us, There's Johnny, Yellowstone & Better call Saul! He has acted alongside Kevin Costner, Tony Danza, Jane Seymour, Patrick Duffy, Roger Bart, Don Ameche, Stacy Keache, John O'Hurley, Andre Braugher, Andy Samberg, Milo Ventimiglia, Bob Odenkirk, Aidan Quinn, BJ Novak, Ashton Kutcher and more. Sean has trained with the top Improv Theatres in the country including The Second City, The Groundlings, Upright Citizens Brigade and I.O. West. He also studied acting with both the prestigious Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute and the Stella Adler Studio of Acting.” This is a fantastic episode because we are able to glimpse into a realm so few actually get to see. Sean also shares about how moving different places regularly as a kid can be difficult, the status of (or decline of) the entertainment industry today, and so much more.
