Back on August 26, 2022, I interviewed a group of ladies who broke a barrier not just in Mississippi, but maybe the nation. They were the first all-black and all-female officiating crew for a high school football game. Fast-forward to today and the end of their season isn't as festive as the start of it was. Adrienne Barnes, who was the referee and lead official for that historic crew, returns to the show to discuss certain practices within her profession that's getting the side-eye. The high school championships are here and some of the high-ranking officials are being shunned in order for less-deserving groups to get a chance on the big stage. Enjoy this Q-on-1 interview with Adrienne, who demonstrated a lot of courage in showing up to discuss something so volatile, as we discuss how there appears to be some discrimination within the high school sports association in the state of Mississippi when it comes to premium assignments. Adrienne Barnes started out working to help people with their user personas but found that her work pointed to an even bigger problem - companies entering growth stalls and unable to recover. She is now here to tell us all how we might maintain our flightworthiness and get back onto the path of sustainable growth. Growth Stalls can happen to anyone and often happen after really strong growth Companies can be growing, growing, growing and then all of a sudden just stall. There are factors that influence this, but if they're not addressed then growth stalls can last for years or decades 2. There are some red flags that indicate growth stalls and leaders need to listen Too many leaders believe in themselves too much that they miss the signs of a growth stall & fail to address them. Status quo bias and ignoring dissenting opinions can impede efforts to fix it. 3. The earlier you catch a growth stall the better but it's never too late Identifying stalls early naturally helps, but if you catch it late then you can still turn it around as long as you're realistic about what "turning it around" means and adjust your expectations. 4. Growth comes from understanding your customers & too many companies don't If teams have different user personas defined, no one has user personas defined. There needs to be a concerted effort to understand your ideal customers and it should be a top-down, aligned effort. 5. Alignment is crucial for any of this stuff to work The top reasons for growth stalls are: Not understanding your customers, Not understanding your positioning, Knowledge gaps & misalignments between teams. You need everyone to know the same stuff & pull in the same direction!   Contact Adrienne You can connect with Adrienne on LinkedIn, Twitter or check her website, AdrienneNakohl.com.

Today’s co-host is Adrienne Barnes, a content strategist and audience researcher specializing in the B2B SaaS industry. Most clients Adrienne works with are terrified of bothering their customers. They hate to be calling and asking and bugging, but the reality is, people want to share their experience with a product. In fact, as we speak, Adrienne’s calendar is fully-booked with customer calls. As Adrienne puts it, thinking your customers don’t want to chat is a self-limiting belief – don’t succumb to it! In this episode, we bust other audience research myths, unpack how to own our audience by asking the right questions to the right people, and outline the number one question Adrienne asks to uncover golden nuggets and crack a marketing research conundrum. “A lot of it, if we’re just gonna get real, boils down to shame or embarrassment. People feel like their product didn’t meet the mark, their tool was wrong or bad or whatever the case may be. But that’s not the case at all. The case is, somehow, somewhere along the line, we attracted a poor fit. And I need to know why. What did we do, what was the message we were sending out, the signal we were sending out, that told these people that this was gonna  be the tool for them?” ~ @adriennenakohlMain Takeaways Sometimes the only way to catch blind spots and stop customer complaints is to sit down and chat with someone who’s actually purchased your product. The first step is figuring out who to reach out to from your audience. Adrienne typically separates a customer base into three segments – the ideal customer, the average customer, and the unhappy customer.  Third-party researchers are more effective because they’re often better listeners. When you work at a company, you’re more inclined to offer up solutions or otherwise attempt to fix a customer complaint. Refusing to empathize shuts down a conversation almost immediately. A common research myth is that it takes endless time and money to understand an audience. In a conversation, ask customers why at least five times. This helps them dig deeper and often leads to golden nuggets about customer experience or ineffective messaging.
