I was asked for the"secrets" I have for marketing. The biggest secret is this: *drum roll* Vertical specialization *Jedi Wave* "this is the secret you've been looking for" Really? Yes, really. Based on metric fscktonnes of research (that's the technical term) I conducted, and reading the research of others, I believe that positioning your business as specializing in a single vertical is the "magic bullet" that will result in more leads & sales than any other marketing strategy. Why is it a secret? Because niching down to a single vertical scares the crap out of people. There are loads of reasons to fear it: it's turning down opportunity (somewhat valid but doesn't really happen) or "I'll get bored just working in one industry" (highly unlikely, as you specialize you find deeper, more interesting problems.) And it's also difficult, and time consuming, and lots of other problems. But it's worthwhile. What's my call to action? Simple: don't just take my word for it: Listen to Wolfram Moritz and Brad Farris and Jonathan Stark and Sara Dunn and Louis Grenier on the Marketing for Consultants podcast. Go read Philip Morgan's "The Positioning Manual for Indie Consultants" where he walks you through how and why to specilize. Read the Business of Expertise from David C. Baker where he lists the pros and cons of vertical vs horizontal specialization. Read Spiraling Up from Lee Frederiksen & Aaron E. Taylor. In fact, check out everything from Hinge, including Kelly J. Waffle's interview with Yitzi Weiner in the Thrive Global Community. Thank you for attending my TED rant.
Amazon is now limiting authors to a mere THREE (3!) new book uploads per DAY to curb the influx of AI-generated content flooding the market. The conversation delves into the pros and cons of leveraging AI for automating content repurposing across multiple formats like podcasts, blogs, and videos. While AI assistance can streamline workflows, the speakers emphasize the irreplaceable value of the human writing and editing process for clarifying expertise. They examine the potential of podcasting, video content, and live interactive sessions to humanize brands and build authentic connections that AI struggles to replicate. They discuss strategies for demonstrating true mastery through unscripted Q&As, webinars, and cultivating a vast body of work. Key Insights Leveraging AI for content repurposing across formats can save time but may devalue human-created content.Traditional writing and editing help clarify thinking and develop deep expertise.Video content, live interactions, and formats like live streaming and webinars build human connections that AI currently struggles to replicate, emphasizing the importance of unscripted expertise.Having a large and diverse body of authentic work across multiple content platforms is harder for AI to convincingly mimic than individual assets.Interactive elements, such as live Q&As, are crucial for demonstrating proven mastery in a field.Use AI writing tools with extensive input, such as custom GPTs, uploading your own works, and using dictation, to retain your unique voice.Prioritize video and podcasting now, while these media still carry inherent credibility.Finding balance in understanding AI's capabilities without ignoring or fearing the technology is key. In this episode, I give you a quick whistlestop tour of what worked and what didn't for me in 2023, and lay out my plans for the business in 2024. I discuss the journey of this podcast, The Recognized Authority, which has shown steady growth across 152 episodes. I also touch on my shift to live streaming many of the episodes. I've found that live streaming offsets my tendency towards perfectionism and encourages proactive content creation. However, I plan to improve the promotion of these live streams well in advance in the coming year. On the social media front, I talk about missing my 2023 goal of reaching 6,000 LinkedIn followers. Falling short of this target has prompted me to refine my content strategy for LinkedIn in 2024. I aim to engage more effectively with the platform's algorithm while scaling back my efforts on other social media platforms. Regarding my email list, I recently increased the frequency of my emails, a move that initially led to a spike in unsubscribes but eventually resulted in greater engagement. I intend to continue this experiment for another 2-3 months to better gauge its long-term effectiveness. I also reflect on my experiments in 2022 with group masterminds and 2023 in my Authority Accelerator program and one-on-one coaching. These experiences have led me to retool my Authority Accelerator program as I've discovered that interviewing not only makes content creation more manageable but also allows me to use the first interview as a foundation for a content roadmap. This interview format is conducive to podcasting, which is an effective tool for lead generation. I'm also considering adding a community offering at some point in 2024, depending on finding the ideal pricing and value for the target audience. Tune in for a behind-the-scenes perspective on my journey. Want to chat? Book a call with me.

We all want more recognition for our expertise. But the path to becoming a recognized authority is not always clear. In this episode, I reflect openly on an oversight in my own authority-building journey: not focusing enough on the pain points and problems that my audience and ideal clients are experiencing. This is a topic we addressed in my conversation with Steven Lewis in the previous episode, and it's something I'm exploring a bit further in today's episode. My takeaway from last week is that I often jump too quickly to solutions before fully exploring the frustrations and challenges of the problem or situation. This is coming from a good place with intentions of helping, but it may be doing my audience a huge disservice, limiting my ability to motivate and compel them to take important-not-urgent actions that can profoundly impact your career and life. Walking through my experience, I share how consistently creating and publishing content opened opportunities, expanded my business, and freed up more of my time. But starting this content engine isn't always easy or an obvious priority. That's why I want to explore this further and paint a fuller picture, examining the consequences you face when not building authority through content. My goal isn't to exaggerate or exacerbate the pain, but explore the limitations and trade-offs you encounter without this critical but never urgent step. My hope is a peek behind the scenes of my thinking motivates and encourages you to start your authority-building journey. I believe the effort is so worth it, but also want to validate that it takes real commitment and perseverance from you. If you need accountability and support, join my intensive Authority Building Bootcamp this November running from Monday 6th for 4 weeks. Let's make progress together before the end of the year and holiday season kicks in, so that we're starting the new year on a strong footing. If you're interested, please enter your email on this form and I'll send you some details about the bootcamp in the next 24 hours. The path to authority takes time, but your impact makes it all worthwhile. I look forward to exploring this with you. ----------

Do you feel like just another face in the crowd? In today's crowded marketplace blending in can spell disaster if you want to attract ideal clients and increase your impact. You need to learn how to differentiate yourself and become the only choice. In this episode of The Recognized Authority, host Alastair McDermott interviews branding strategist Gerry Foster on how consultants, coaches and thought leaders can stand out from the competition through strategic branding. They discuss the importance of finding your uniqueness in order to increase your impact. Gerry explains that you need to identify and promote how you are different and better than other options your potential clients may be considering. He discusses the concept of the "blue ocean" - finding untapped market spaces where you can offer fresh and original solutions. This includes developing a unique "secret sauce" system to deliver concrete outcomes for clients. He advises positioning yourself as a brand that offers exclusive value, not just another generic service provider.
