John MacDonald: Our speeding fines are a joke

Kerre McIvor Mornings Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 17, 2024 4:49 Transcription Available

If I asked you how many demerit points you have right now, reckon you'd be able to tell me? If you could, then you're better than most people. Because, unless you get enough demerits to have your licence suspended, then I think most people don't care. And a study out today is telling us that we do need to care if we want to make the roads safer. The people behind the study are telling us that most of us won't care until we have tougher penalties for speeding. And I'm with them. Because, if we keep on doing things the way we do, not much is going to change. Here's the gist of what this study connected with the University of Canterbury is telling us. It's found that drivers ticketed for speeding are nearly three times more likely to be involved in a crash. And you know why that is, don't you? It's because the fines for speeding are so piddly that people just take their chances. The speed cameras don't help, either. Because, if you get ticketed by a speed camera, you don't even get the demerit points. Because it can be difficult to prove who was driving. So, while the speed cameras are useful, they're not going to do much in terms of slowing people down if, the only impact, is paying a piddly fine and still keeping your licence. Which is why I like the idea that these researchers are floating today. That if you get a speeding ticket and keep on speeding, you get a higher fine each time. I'd go a step further than that, though, and say that the fines themselves need to be way higher than what they are now. As one of the people involved in this study is pointing out today, it's crazy that you can actually pay more for a parking fine than for a speeding fine. So rank up the fines each time someone is caught speeding - but sting people for a lot more than we do at the moment. The other idea that these experts are putting out there today is, essentially, means testing people when they get fined for speeding. Which might sound like a good idea. But it's not. Because someone who speeds is just as much of a menace on the road whether they're driving some sort of Flash Harry 4-wheel-drive or whether they're driving a Demio or a clapped-out old Toyota. Besides which, when you drive too fast on the road you are breaking the law. So I think giving speeding fines to people on how rich they are, or otherwise, makes no sense. Not to mention the fact that it would be an absolute nightmare to run. Can you imagine getting pulled over by a cop? Getting some sort of ticket. Then having to go home and submit your income details and whatever else they'd need to determine what means you have to pay the fine. It might sound like a great idea when you're writing your research paper at university and trying to “push the envelope” a bit. But it would be a disaster. Although, to be fair to Dr Darren Walton at the University of Canterbury, he hasn't just plucked this idea out of thin air. He says, in Switzerland, speeding fines are scaled to wealth. But I don't see how that would encourage someone with plenty of money to slow down. They'd just go “pfft” and pay the fine. And I don't buy this argument that speeding fines need to be “equitable”. That's what the university guy is saying. You speed, you get caught, and you should pay exactly the same fine - whatever your financial situation. That's what I think. But, if this research is telling us that drivers ticketed for speeding are nearly three times more likely than other drivers to be involved in a crash, then something does need to change. And I do like the idea of scaling-up the speeding fine system. So that, each time you get a ticket, you have to pay a higher fine. What do you think? John MacDonald: I say no to mayor's speed limit increase

Canterbury Mornings with Chris Lynch

When you drive the Southern Motorway between Rolleston and Christchurch, how fast do you go?  According to the mayor of Selwyn, Sam Broughton, chances are you go faster than 100 kph. Which is why he thinks the speed limit on that piece of road should be lifted to 120 kph.  An idea which I think is ridiculous.   I'm thinking it probably has something to do with the come-to-Jesus moment I had about speed limits when I was travelling around the South Island last summer. When I realised that doing 80 kph on a 100 kph is, actually, quite enjoyable. And safer.  I used to be all-for getting back to the old 50 kph and 100 kph. Not so much now.  Where this idea of the Selwyn mayor's has come from, is the work the Government's doing at the  moment reviewing speed limits around the country.  Quite rightly, it's got its sights set on some of the non-sensical speed limit changes that have popped-up around the place recently.   And some of the speed limits you see are nuts. Case in point: Colombo Street, in Christchurch, heading towards the Cashmere Hills. It reduces for a very short stretch because of a nearby school - which isn't even on Colombo Street.  Then you go a bit further up the road to where there is a school on Colombo Street, but there's no speed reduction!  So Transport Minister Simeon Brown has sent around a document to local councils asking for their feedback.  And what the councils are being asked to do is give advice on highways they think should have a speed limit of 120 kph instead of 100.  And Selwyn's Sam Broughton has told the Government that that beautiful stretch of motorway from Rolleston to Brougham Street should have a speed limit of 120, because a lot of drivers are travelling faster than 100, anyway.  Which is an interesting way of justifying it. ‘Oh look, they're breaking the rule so let's change it.'  He says in his letter to the Transport Minister: “Whether it is for general traffic, direct public transport services, or moving freight, council considers increasing the speed limit of the motorway between Rolleston and Brougham St will assist in improving efficiency and connectivity while still being safe.”  And he goes on to say: “This is reflected in generally higher average speeds above 100 kms per hour we already observe along the motorway.”  So that's the bit where he's saying people break the rules anyway, so let's change them.  Since the Southern Motorway opened in 2020, five people have been seriously injured in crashes. There have been no fatal accidents.  And the number of vehicles using the motorway is just going to increase. In 2021, there were 21,000 vehicles on the motorway daily. This is expected to jump to 33,000 by 2040.  I'm not the only one who thinks it's a stupid idea to increase the speed limit. Transport expert Professor Simon Kingham —from the University of Canterbury— feels the same. Which, you might say, he would anyway, because Simon's not big on speed.  He's probably not that big on vehicles, full stop, to be fair. But I agree with him on this one.  Because he and I only see one outcome from increasing the speed limit to 120 kph on the Southern Motorway. More crashes and more severe crashes.  Because if it's 100 now and the Selwyn council is noticing that a lot of people are going faster than that, what do you think they'll do if it's 120? They'll go even faster, won't they?  I remember a few weeks back, we were talking about restricting the engine size for young or new drivers, and there was no shortage of people saying you can drive a Demio or any one of those shopping basket cars upwards of 150 kph.  So if you increase the speed limit on the Southern Motorway, as the mayor of Selwyn thinks we should, then I think we can pretty safely assume that there'll be a lot of drivers quite happy to nudge it up to 130 kph. And that could be disastrous.  Which is why it's a “no” from me. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to this episode of Ready, Set, Launch! Today we're going to talk about WEBINARS! Webinars are quickly becoming my favourite way to launch a course. They're fun. They're engaging. And they convert really really well. My last 2 webinars have had a 20% conversion rate from the people who attended. Which means 20% of people who have shown up live, have purchased my course. And this isn't because of trickery, fancy slick sales tactics or seamless tech setups. Trust me, I keep things REALLY simple. So in today's episode I want to share my top 6 tips to a client winning webinar.     1. Make sure your messaging is aligned.  From your FB Ads, to your webinar topic, to your sales page > You need to make sure you're attracting the right people for your offer.     2. Don't over-teach.  One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is trying to over deliver in their webinar presentations because they're afraid of people attending the webinar and complaining that the webinar was all ‘pitch' and no value.  The truth is, you'll likely - at some stage - have someone come to you unhappy with your content. It's inevitable when you're scaling. Remember: You're not showing up to please that person. You're creating your content for your DREAM client > and you don't want to overwhelm her. She just needs a few quick wins to give her the roadmap to solving her problem. Your paid program will give her the exact “how to”.      3. Practice your pitch.  The pitch is what all my students dread the most. And I'll admit - It's a tricky one to transition to. The best thing you can do to master your pitch - is practice practice practice.     4. Keep your tech simple.  If you're just getting started with webinars, I recommend Zoom simply because you're most likely familiar with that platform and you can avoid having to learn anything new or create any complex integration. When you're ready to ‘upgrade' to a better experience for both YOU as the presenter and your audience, then I would recommend Demio. It's simple, affordable & the features are incredible.     5. Create incentives for people to buy while you're on live. People are most likely to buy anything when there is an element or urgency or scarcity. When you're live ont he webinar your your audience - make your sales pitch fun by offering an incentive for people to buy before you end the session. And YES - this does work.     6. Focus on getting people to show up LIVE Getting people to attend ANY free event whether in person or online is always a challenge. You really need to focus on: Making sure your audience knows all the details; date, time, how to join Send plenty of reminders Create further incentives (like a BONUS PDF guide) to people who attend live.

It was great to chat to David who is co founder of Demio - some really cool webinar software (that integrates with EventsFrame of course ;)) It's a great entrepreneur ‘origin story'. David is one of the new breeds of entrepreneurs who have never had a job, and I really love these stories, as when I came out of college it wasn't an option to start an online business but now it's a viable career choice. David had a lot of false starts including launching 4 web apps before he stuck with Demio and even then it took 2 years to launch it, so it was a real struggle in the early days. We also learn about running virtual meetups, training and events via webinars and discuss: How to keep people engaged with regular activities, quizzes etc. How to sell a virtual event using testimonials and social proof If you want to hear more of David, he interviewed me on his podcast about the story of EventsFrame so check it out here it was a fun chat The podcast is sponsored by www.eventsframe.com - Effortless ticketing and attendee management with NO ticket fees and plans from just $20/month! This week's episode is a bit different. I was delighted to be a guest on the ‘SaaS Breakthrough Podcast' with David Abrams from Demio to talk about EventsFrame, the ticketing system I co founded. I am often asked about the backstory of EventsFrame by listeners so this is a great way to tell the full story. I thought I would post it here as I get into a lot of detail about how we founded the software and a lot of the problems and ‘war stories' of our entrepreneurial adventure so far. If you are thinking about starting an app or software for event producers this is the episode for you! In this interview we discuss: Founding AppsEvents - our Google for Education Partner company How we came to start EventsFrame to use ourselves AppSumo - What it is…...and the good, the bad and the ugly of doing an AppSumo offer How to make your ticketing software more viral How podcasting really helps you grow your network How hard it is to start a business, and how there is no substitute in the beginning for hours and hours spent contacting potential customers What are our plans for EventsFrame - (Side note we are looking for a sales and marketing co founder so get in touch!)
