We're watching Joss Whedon's 2012 version of Much Ado About Nothing, starring Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker. The story focuses on two couples: chatty Cathies Benedick and Beatrice, who only talk about how much they dislike each other and how they will never, ever get married (the rest of the cast thinks they doth protest too much), and Claudio and Hero, the couple we're all kind of worried about. Will these budding relationships survive the evil machinations of the self-proclaimed villain Don John? Tune in to find out! Podcast artwork by Anna Eggleton of Treehouse Lettering & Design.
“Cagey little brutes, aren’t they?” The Mother of Angel Studies, author and vampire queen Stacey Abbott is back! This week we discuss the somewhat strained metaphor and textual subtext of episode 113, “She,” which for years I’ve remembered as unutterably terrible, but on this rewatch I find myself being a bit kinder to. If nothing else, the episode gives us some of the greatest comedic moments from all of this first season, possibly the series. Alexis Denisof deserves a pratfall Oscar! Also on tap, 114, “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” makes good use of a classic Hollywood horror trope, as well as providing the first tantalizing hint at darker depths to Wesley. And 115, “The Prodigal,” where the Whedonverse continues its focused, brutal assault on the notions of fatherhood. NEXT: Post-Production Supervisor and Hollywood man-about-town Michael Holland is back to help me look over episodes 116, “The Ring” and 117, “Eternity.” BREAKDOWN 00:00:55 - Intro / Guest 00:02:40 - Main Topic 01:11:17 - Outro / Next LIBRARY Celluloid Vampires: Life After Death in the Modern World, by Stacey Abbott Reading Angel: The TV Spin-off With a Soul, edited by Stacey Abbott Angel (TV Milestones Series) by Stacey Abbott Near Dark (BFI Film Classics), by Stacey Abbott Global TV Horror, edited by Stacey Abbott and Lorna Jowett LINKS Monstrum: A Peer-Reviewed Journal of Studies in Horror MUSIC “Conversations (feat. So far, every conversational topic in an episode of Reel Deep Dive has centered on a single film. In the hopes of shaking things up, Ryan and Rachel are breaking down two cinematic spins on the Bard's famous romantic comedy. The first one is Kenneth Branagh's 1993 effort starring Emma Thompson, Keanu Reeves, Michael Keaton, Kate Beckinsale, Denzel Washington, and Robert Sean Leonard. The other subject is Joss Whedon's 2012 film starring Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Fran Kranz, Nathan Fillion, Jillian Morgese, Clark Gregg, and Sean Maher. There's naturally going to be some comparing and contrasting when it comes to how each actor tackled their respective parts, but Ryan and Rachel also talk about how the two films differ in terms of set design, cinematography, musical choices, and thematic emphasis (Beatrice's "If I Were A Man" monologue gets a lot of attention). There's also plenty of talk about how Shakespeare has been interpreted by various people throughout the ages. In addition to all that, Ryan takes a moment to explain why Claudio is an "Aristotle Fuckboy". --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ryan-valentine3/support

Notes:There are a variety of theories and models that describe and define elements of romantic chemistry and interpersonal attraction. We choose one that spoke to us and made sense within our own life experience. The romantic chemistry framework using 4 types of attraction (Physical, Intellectual, Social, and Emotional) that the Verbivore mentioned comes from several sources, but was most informed by author Kristen Kieffer’s Well-Storied blog post “How to Craft Romantic Chemistry Between Characters”. Here are Kristen Kieffer’s definitions of the 4 attraction types:Physical Attraction: a desire to touch and be touched by another person, often in a sexual manner.Intellectual Attraction: a desire to engage with someone due to their intellect and/or interests.Social Attraction: a desire to interact with someone because of their social aptitude; their confidence, humor, ambition, likability, and/or particular social personality traits.Emotional Attraction: a desire to connect with someone on a spiritual level, an attraction often prompted by a person’s emotional capacity, attitude, beliefs, or shared experiences. The research that the Verbivore cited regarding longevity and viability as a couple being tied to reacting positively when your partner makes a bid for connection came from the Gottman Institute’s research on marriage relationships. If you are interested in exploring this research, here are some links to additional information on this topic:https://www.gottman.com/blog/turn-toward-instead-of-away/https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2014/06/happily-ever-after/372573/The quote that the Verbivore shared from Anne Lamott is taken from her book entitled Small Victories: Spotting Improbable Moments of Grace. Here is the full quote:“We turn toward love like sunflowers to the sun, and then the human parts kick in.”The “Welcome to Costco. I [We] love you.” quote is from the odd 2006 comedic, dystopian film Idiocracy.Books Mentioned:Pride and Prejudice by Jane AustenMuch Ado About Nothing by William ShakespeareRomeo and Juliet by William ShakespeareThe Graveyard Book by Neil GaimanFavorite Movie & TV Versions:BBC’s Pride and Prejudice - Epic 6-Episode Full Story VersionStarring Jennifer Ehle and Colin FirthPride and Prejudice - Sweet and Stunning Cliff Notes VersionStarring Kiera Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen, and Donald SutherlandPride + Prejudice + Zombies - Jane Austen plus a Zombie Apocalypse Version (Because why not?)Starring Lily James, Sam Riley, and Matt SmithMuch Ado About Nothing - Filmed in the Italian Countryside VersionStarring Emma Thompson, Kenneth Brenagh, Denzel Washington, and Michael KeatonMuch Ado About Nothing - Black and White Joss Whedon VersionStarring Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Clark Gregg, and Nathan FillionRomeo & Juliet - Beautifully Acted “likely-seen-in-your-English-class” 1968 VersionStarring Leonard Whiting and Olivia HusseyWilliam Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet - Baz Luhrmann Fever Dream VersionStarring Claire Danes, Leonardo DiCaprio, and John LeguizamoMusic from: https://filmmusic.io’Friendly day’ by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com) Licence: CC BY (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)

Way back in April, I was hearing (and reporting - https://anchor.fm/mattsager/episodes/Joker-Trailer-Has-Arrived--Also-Happy-Birthday-to-RDJ--and-Angel-Anniversary-Reunion-Rumors-Persist-e3lhfg) rumblings about an Angel 20th Anniversary from David Boreanaz - which is ironic, as you'll learn from tonight's podcast. You'll also learn that a reunion is indeed in full swing, with the cast reuniting for an Entertainment Weekly interview and photo shoot, and most of them convening right here in New York City for NYCC 2019! Check out the Angel Investigations gang in the current issue of EW: https://ew.com/tv/2019/06/20/angel-reunion-20th-anniversary And here's some more info on the NYCC reunion panel: https://www.syfy.com/syfywire/angel-celebrates-20th-anniversary-with-nycc-panel Here's the announcement video tweet, featuring Charisma, Amy, J. August and James, which I play on tonight's podcast: https://twitter.com/NY_Comic_Con/status/1141038559681531908 As a fan, it's great to see the show come to get the respect it's always deserved, in part because of what a massive influence it, and many of Joss Whedon's other creations, have been so incredibly influential. In a lot of ways, Whedon has made an impact on the world so seismic, it has finally caused the world to catch up with the brilliance of his creations - granted, it took 20 years, but still. Progress is progress, and I'm very excited to see James Marsters, Alexis Denisof, Amy Acker, J. August Richards and Charisma Carpenter at NYCC in October. Yeah, you might have noticed one name missing there - not a typo. Everyone who the show is NOT named after will be appearing at NYCC. That's alright, David Boreanaz is probably going to be too busy spending that sweet Bones settlement money (https://anchor.fm/mattsager/episodes/No-Bones-About-It--Fox-Is-Screwed-e3lhg3/a-af2pro) to attend. I'm sure that he'll be there in spirit. Thanks for checking out tonight's episode - make sure to subscribe to the show, and to leave ratings and reviews! David and Michaela have a so-so time with "Smashed", a surprising fan favourite (not that surprising when you know one thing that happens at the end of the episode). Big rings make a surprising comeback, turtlenecks never die and Anya runs into eyeshadow trouble. After time on the London stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Alexis Denisof made his name in the United States initially as Wesley Wyndham-Pryce in both "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and its spinoff "Angel." Since then, he's been in "How I Met Your Mother," other Joss Whedon projects such as "Dollhouse," and Marvel hits "The Avengers" and "Guardians of the Galaxy." But his first Emmy nomination came this summer, for his role in the Stage13.com episodic short series "I Love Bekka & Lucy." Denisof plays Glenn, the wheelchair-bound and somewhat annoying neighbor turned love interest of one of the stars of the show, which is written/directed/produced by Rachael Holder. I had a great conversation with Alexis about working for Whedon, "Angel," Shakespeare, short-form video, and playing a complicated role in a sympathetic and real way. Give it a listen. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/davidlbloom/support
In this episode, we discuss the 1986 musical masterpiece, "Little Shop of Horrors," starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene and Vincent Gardenia, and the 2012 microbudget drama, "Much Ado About Nothing," starring Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker. Is it possible that Will Shakespeare and Joss Whedon are the same person? Think about it. Have you ever seen them together in the same place and century? I didn't think so! During my crazed schedule at SXSW, I made sure to set some time aside to talk to the cast and creator of the upcoming gal pal comedy I Love Bekka and Lucy, the first digital series to be included in the episodic programming at the festival — and that's a huge deal. On the episode, I have a grand ol' time talking with writer-director Rachael Holder and actors Jessica Parker Kennedy, Tanisha Long, Chris Smith, and Alexis Denisof about the hysterical series, diversity & inclusion (obvi), and most importantly, The Great British Baking Show.
This week, Paul and AJ discover that silence is perfectest herald of joy; if they were but little happy, they could say how much. You're kidding yourself, though, if you thought that meant they would shut up. Nope, there's plenty of talk about Joss Whedon's delightful Shakespeare adaptation Much Ado About Nothing, as the boys gush about the cast (Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof together again!), delight in the embellishments and grace notes Whedon has added to the text, and discuss how successfully the film blends Old English with 21st century trappings. Much ado, indeed. Next: we're making up for not taking the Fourth of July off by taking next week off, but when we return, we shall be discussing Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim.

Joss Whedon, Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof: Meet the Filmmakers
Joss Whedon is director of the Serenity, Avengers and now... a black and white Shakespeare adaptation that he shot in just 12 days with a group of friends and a very small film crew. In this very special podcast, you can hear him (and the stars of the film, Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker) talk about the project, as well as details on Avengers 2, Quicksilver and, as they say, much, much more...
It’s another fantastic week of television, with the dramas in particular bringing their A game and giving us plenty to talk about on the podcast. First we break down the comedies, then the genre fare, then the reality, and finally the dramas. Then we head over to the DVD Shelf to welcome back David Bax ...
