Welcome back to Not A Bomb! This is the podcast where we explore some of cinema's biggest box failures and decide if they deserve a second chance. Unfortunately, Troy and Brad must say goodbye to the McConaughthon as our month dedicated to the one and only Matthew McConaughey comes to an end. In this week's episode, the guys discuss a film that was meant to launch a multi-media extravaganza. However, its lackluster box office performance and critical reception prevented it from getting off the ground. The gang examines The Dark Tower, which is loosely based on Stephen King's novel series of the same name. While the movie offers a simplified take on the books, does it motivate viewers to dive into the series? How many Stephen King Easter eggs can one film contain? Can Idris Elba rescue this aimless journey? Tune in to find out! The Dark Tower is directed by Nikolaj Arcel and stars Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Taylor, Claudia Kim, Fran Kranz, Abbey Lee, and Jackie Earle Haley. Head over to the Not A Bomb Tee Public store and check them out. Special thanks to Ted Blair for the amazing designs! We're committed to hearing your feedback and suggestions. If there's a cinematic flop you'd like us to delve into, please reach out to us at NotABombPod@gmail.com or through our contact page. Your reviews and feedback are what drive us. If you enjoy our content, consider leaving a review on Apple Podcast or Spotify. Cast: Brad, Troy

Two risky films take centre stage in this episode of Film Stories, starting with Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan. A 170-minute film released in the midst of a summer jammed with over 100 films to choose from in cinema. Who would have thought it'd prevail at the box office? Spielberg for one wasn't too worried: but also, he came to it directly after making The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Amistad. No wonder he had to rely heavily on his instincts. Fran Kranz meanwhile, better known for his acting, got nowhere with a script he'd written for a $100m alien invasion movie. He turned his attention to something a lot smaller, that he could raise the funding for. He came up with Mass, on a shoestring budget. Completing the film was just part of the challenge... Do you need an encyclopedic knowledge of horror movies to appreciate this movie? Or does the comedy carry everything along? Does the shadow of Joss Whedon loom too large, especially in the final scene? And why isn't Fran Kranz in more TV and movies please? Jam-packed genre films with Chris Hemsworth. Sarah Watt, Jeremy Downing and William Chen discuss Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) and Cabin in the Woods (2011). We begin by sharing our honest reactions to Thor: Love and Thunder, especially how ridiculous film is - comparing to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), Free Guy (2021), Black Panther (2018) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968). We praise the performances of Russell Crowe, Christian Bale and Chris Hemsworth. We criticise the characters played by Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson, considering their representation in regards to sexism and queer-baiting. We then pivot conversation to talk about Cabin in the Woods, both our first reactions a decade ago and our rewatching reactions. We praise the cast of Bradley Whitford, Richard Jenkins, Amy Acker, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchinson, Kristen Connolly and Fran Kranz. We consider the film in connection to other Joss Whedon work, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003), Dollhouse (2009-2010), and Much Ado About Nothing (2012). We return back to Thor and consider how the two films successfully achieve their intentions. We compare the films to Get Out (2017), Scream (2022), Batman Returns (1992), Hunt For the Wilderpeople (2016), and Boy (2010).

Winner of the Robert Altman Award at the Film Independent Spirit Awards, Mass is the story of the aftermath of a violent tragedy that affects the lives of two couples in different ways. Writer-Director Fran Kranz talks to Write On about his inspiration for the film: "It was the day of the Parkland shooting, where I got so overwhelmed. You know, this sounds like a strange thing to say, but there was a kind of timing to it, sort of a perfect timing of a vulnerability where I was just kind of a freaked out dad... feeling anxieties and concerns and fears that I had never felt before… and worried about the kind of country and things that she [my daughter] was going to growing up into. So I went down kind of a rabbit hole that started just mostly because I was sort of this concerned parent." Fran goes on to talk about his writing process, or lack of one: "I don't really have a process yet, necessarily. I wish I could just like go to a Starbucks and write. I have to, like, disappear, like I have to really go deep and I try to get up before dawn, like before the sun is up so that I'm ready to go... I need as much on my side as possible to get these emotions going." Don't forget to subscribe to the Write On Podcast on iTunes!   Now available on Google Podcasts!

Barry and Julia are in awe of this four-person drama from writer/director Fran Kranz. Why does this film, about a conversation taking place in a single room, work without feeling claustrophobic, overly stagey or like a self-indulgent actor's exercise? It's a serious work and we're happy to discuss this, one of the best films of 2021.
