(Jack Parrott / Flickr )Freeing the slaves in America was not done with the stroke of a pen. President Abraham Lincoln and other anti-slavery politicians of the time used the constitution, which did not condemn slavery, in a very deliberate and strategic way to make their arguments.College of Southern Idaho professor Justin Vipperman will be exploring this topic at the Idaho State Archives in Boise; he joined Idaho Matters for a preview, along with Angie Davis from the Idaho State Archives.
Global Minnesota's Classroom Connection program inspires our littlest learners with fun and interactive lessons about a country's culture, language, and daily life. International volunteers from all over the world go to elementary and middle school classrooms to spark global curiosity about people from other countries. Global Minnesota recently expanded this program to Mankato, Minnesota, further increasing our reach across the state. On this episode, we are joined by Angie Davis, a kindergarten teacher with Washington Elementary School in Mankato, Nowrin Koly, a Classroom Connection volunteer from Bangladesh, and Madeline Wildeson, Assistant Director for Retention at the Kearney International Center at MSU Mankato. They participated in our pilot program to expand Classroom Connection to Mankato and have joined to talk about their background and experiences with the program. Links Classroom Connection Program

One of the hardest parts of running a data analytics program inside a large organization is governing data and reports. It’s simply too easy for the definition of core data elements and metrics to get out of sync and reports to contain conflicting information. Angie Davis has straddled both the business and IT worlds for more than 20 years. She served as a business analyst in several organizations before switching to the information technology side of the business where she ran analytics teams, first at JD Irving for six years and more recently at Brookfield Renewable where she is an IT director. Angie has a degree in mathematics and electrical engineering from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

This week we take a look at an article called "Thwarting Southern Schemes and British Bluster in the Pacific Northwest" by James Robbins Jewell. The author contends the Pig War, which we covered in our fourth episode, was meant to divert troops out west during the build-up to the Civil War. Further, he discusses British plots for taking over a large chunk of the Pacific Northwest, as well as how the Brits were encouraging pro-Southern sympathies among the Southerners living in B.C. and Vancouver. And of course, we can't do a Civil War episode without speculating on how our old friend Jeff Standifer was connected to all of this. Special thanks to Angie Davis at the Idaho State Archives.

Landry the dog, her parents Tim & Angie Davis then joined us to talk about her Preds-themed activity book that raises money for the Last Minute Toy Store. We close it up discussing our favorite Thanksgiving foods, why Grimaldi was assigned to Milwaukee, the power play and more.
