Send us a textOn this episode of Speaking of … College of Charleston, Mark Del Mastro, Associate Provost for Academic and International Programs, and Chris Korey, Associate Provost for Student Success, talk about launching their new podcast, Faculty Off the Clock. This podcast takes you beyond the classroom to reveal the hidden lives of College of Charleston faculty. From woodworking enthusiasts to barbershop quartet singers, you'll meet professors with fascinating passions and stories that go far beyond academia. Korey and Del Mastro hope these conversations will highlight not only unique interests of the guests but will function as a bridge to connect people on campus with shared interests. “Both Mark and I were faculty members at one point, and most of your identity on campus is sort of tied up into what your scholarship is and teaching and you very rarely have opportunities to talk about what you do outside of that,” says Korey. “So we wanted to create a venue where people have the opportunity to talk about those things because it doesn't normally come up in our work environments.”Humor is a big part of their collaboration and Del Mastro and Korey make a habit of asking their guests a series of lightening round questions on topics from hot dogs vs. hamburgers to celebrity crushes. They also make it a point to ask guests about whether they like popcorn, which is a shared love and an ongoing joke between the hosts, and it gives them an opportunity to share their love of the Whirley Pop stove-pop popper. They end the episode by presenting guests with a customized bobblehead doll. “The whole purpose of the podcast is to show the lighter side of the faculty member and what better characterizes the lighter side of someone than a bobblehead?” says Del Mastro. Ireland's biggest astrophotography competition 'Reach for the Stars' is now open for entries. Organised by the School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) the competition aims to find the best astro-photographs taken in Ireland between 26 April 2024 last year and 02 June 2025. This year, for the first time, Under 18s can enter the smartphone category -the 'Night Sky in Your Hand'. Shortlisted entrants will be announced in late June with the public invited to vote for their favourite to win the "People's Choice" category at that time. Run in partnership with The Irish Times and sponsored by the Astronomical Observatories of Ireland and MKC Communications, full details about the competition can be found on www.reachforthestars.ie. Photographs taken between 26 April 2024 last year and 02 June 2025 can be entered in five distinct categories: Night Sky in Your Hand (Category expanded to include U18s): Images taken with only a smartphone, and without telescopes, of an astronomical scene. Out of this World - Planetary: Images of the planets, sun and moon. Out of this World - Deep Sky: Images of celestial objects that exist outside our solar system such as nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies. Back on Earth - Landscape: Images that depict a feature of astronomical interest as a prominent feature and elements such as nature, land or water. Back on Earth - Landmark: Images that depict a feature of astronomical interest as a prominent feature and elements such as cityscapes, buildings, houses, historical structures or monuments. Entries will be judged by Alan Betson, The Irish Times, PPI Press Photographer of the Year; Michael McCreary, President, Irish Astronomical Society; Professor Peter Gallagher, Senior Professor and Head of Astronomy and Astrophysics at DIAS; and Dr Lisa McNamee, Co-Founder, Space Medicine Ireland. Launching the competition today, Dr. Eucharia Meehan, CEO and Registrar of DIAS, said: "This is the fifth year of DIAS 'Reach for the Stars' and this year we're making one big change to the competition. In opening the smartphone category to U18s we hope to encourage the curiosity and interest of young people in the night sky, and of the many astronomical events and wonders on show. Mobile phones have such great cameras today making astrophotography a really accessible activity and we can't wait to see what they submit". "Chair of the judging panel and Director of DIAS Dunsink Observatory, Professor Peter Gallagher said: "People have a natural interest and deep curiosity about the stars and the planets. The images captured each year are breathtaking and give us an insight into the beauty of the night sky. In recent times, the northern lights have been visible from Ireland, and so we look forward to seeing photographs that capture these dancing displays from across the island". Reach for the Stars Competition Details Entrants may submit up to two images per category to the competition. The deadline for entries is 5pm, 04 June 2025. All entries will be screened by a shortlisting panel to ensure they meet the eligibility criteria. The shortlisted images in each category will then go forward for consideration by the judging panel and for an online public vote on reachforthestars.ie.
For more than 50 years, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has been categorizing institutions in a functional but basic way–by the highest degree the institution awards and the amount of research generated by the institution. Even as American higher education changed significantly from the early 1970s, the classifications remained the same. Until recently! In this episode we talk about the classifications, how they were used and why, and what led to the revised classifications that were just released. Key Takeaways:The Carnegie Foundation partnered with the American Council on Education (ACE) to conduct the first major overhaul of the Carnegie Classifications for Higher Education in almost 50 years.Over the three-year process, the team engaged thousands of stakeholders across the higher education sector and other relevant experts about how best to provide more information about an institution through the classifications. For the first time, the Carnegie Classifications bring in information about the student (not just the degree) through the new Student Access and Earnings category. The American Council on Education prefers a three-syllable callout (“EY SEA EE”) rather than a one-syllable word (“ace”) when referring to the organization in shorthand. Mr. Rousselle was arrested for impaired driving and administered a breathalyser test. Based on the results of the test, he was charged with having a blood alcohol concentration equal to or exceeding 80 mg of alcohol in 100 mL of blood within two hours of ceasing to operate a motor vehicle. At trial, a Certificate of Qualified Technician from the officer who administered the breathalyzer test was admitted into evidence but the trial judge refused to admit two certificates of analysts who had certified the target value of the alcohol standard used by the qualified technician to conduct a required system calibration check of the breathalyzer device. The trial judge held the Certificate of Qualified Technician was not evidence of the target value of an alcohol standard and proof of the target value of an alcohol standard was a pre-condition to the Crown relying on the presumption in s. 320.31(1) of the Criminal Code that breathalyzer test results are conclusive proof of blood alcohol concentration. The trial judge acquitted Mr. Rousselle. A summary conviction appeal was allowed, the acquittal was set aside and a conviction was entered. The Court of appeal dismissed an appeal. Argued Date 2025-04-24 Keywords Criminal law — Evidence — Breathalyser test results — Target value of alcohol standard — Whether Court of Appeal erred in interpretation of s. 320.31(1)(a) of Criminal Code as permitting Crown to prove alcohol standard was certified by an analyst through hearsay evidence of qualified technician? The complainant was at that time, a grade 7 student at an all-male boarding school in Alberta. The respondent was a teacher at the school. After a trial by judge and jury, the respondent was found guilty of sexual interference (count 1), invitation to sexual touching (count 2), and sexual assault (count 3) of a person under the age of 14 years. The offences occurred in 1993 and 1994. In view of the multiple incidents in this case, the sentencing judge was satisfied that it was appropriate to sentence the respondent on counts 1 and 2. Convictions were entered on counts 1 and 2. The charge of sexual assault was stayed in accordance with Kienapple. The respondent was sentenced to a six year prison term with the counts to be served concurrently. A majority of the Alberta Court of Appeal (Wakeling and Feehan JJ.A.) allowed the respondent's sentence appeal reducing the sentence to 47 months. Crighton J.A., dissented and would have upheld the six year sentence imposed by the sentencing judge. Argued Date 2025-04-23 Keywords Criminal law – Sentencing – Did the Alberta Court of Appeal err in law in finding the sentencing judge's reasons for sentence to be insufficient? Do the principles articulated in R. v. Friesen apply to historic offences? Did the Alberta Court of Appeal err in interfering with the sentence imposed at trial? In 2020 the Chief Medical Officer of Health for Newfoundland and Labrador issued certain orders under the province's Public Health Protection and Promotion Act, in an effort to curtail the spread of COVID-19. These orders restricted travel, by limiting the circumstances in which non-residents were permitted to enter the province. Appellant Kimberley Taylor resides in Nova Scotia. Her mother, a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador, passed away suddenly in 2020. Ms. Taylor sought an exemption from the travel restrictions in order to attend her mother's funeral. Her request was denied. Ms. Taylor brought an application seeking a declaration that the travel restriction orders, and the provision of the Act under which they were issued, were beyond the legislative authority of the province and of no force and effect. Ms. Taylor also argued that the travel restrictions violated her rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador dismissed the application. The application judge held that the legislation at issue was constitutional, but that the right to remain in Canada, protected by s. 6(1) of the Charter, included a right of mobility simpliciter within Canada. The decision to deny Ms. Taylor entry into the province infringed her s. 6(1) right to mobility, but the infringement was justified under s. 1 of the Charter. By the time the appeal and cross-appeal from that judgment came before the Court of Appeal of Newfoundland and Labrador, the travel restrictions were no longer in effect. The Court of Appeal declined to hear the appeal and cross-appeal on the basis that they were moot. Argued Date 2025-04-16 Keywords Charter of Rights – Mobility rights – Public health – COVID-19 – Chief medical officer of health issuing orders pursuant to provincial legislation to restrict travel into province during public health emergency – Appellant seeking to enter province to attend funeral – Appellant denied entry – Whether travel restriction order unconstitutional – Whether travel restriction order violates s. 6(1) of Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms – Whether travel restriction order violates s. 6(2)(a) of Charter – Whether s. 6 violation justified by s. 1 of Charter – Whether Court of Appeal correct to reject appeal as moot – Public Health Protection and Promotion Act, S.N.L. 2018, c. P-37.3, s. 28(1)(h). After a trial by judge alone, the appellant, Buddy Ray Underwood, was convicted of robbery, kidnapping, unlawful confinement and murder. The trial judge acquitted the appellant of first degree murder but entered a conviction for the included offence of second degree murder instead. The respondent Crown appealed the acquittal and the appellant cross-appealed the conviction. The Court of Appeal unanimously allowed the Crown's appeal, quashed the acquittal on first degree murder and substituted a conviction for first degree murder under ss. 231(2) and (5) of the Criminal Code, R.S.C. 1985, c. C-46. First, the court agreed with the Crown that the trial judge erred in law in his analysis of constructive first degree murder by narrowing the causation analysis to focus exclusively on the direct medical cause of death. Second, the court concluded that the trial judge erred in law by misapprehending the time frame for assessing planning as well as the meaning of “planned” more generally. The appellant's cross-appeal, not at issue, was dismissed. Argued Date 2025-04-17 Keywords Criminal law – Appeals – Murder – First degree murder – Elements of offence – Constructive first degree murder – Planning and deliberation – Whether the Court of Appeal erred in law in convicting the appellant of first degree murder by concluding that his actions satisfied the elements of s. 231(2) and (5)(e) of the Criminal Code, R.S.C. 1985, c. C-46. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a hot topic everywhere these days. What is it, what are its promises, and what are its current limitations in terms of applicability to the work we do in a registrar's office. You'll hear from the Chief AI Officer at George Mason University about the promises and challenges of AI, and from a privacy and information law attorney about some of the considerations we should be making as we pursue any new technology, but AI especially. Key Takeaways:There are many promises of AI, but there are some significant challenges currently, as well. Don't be swept away by the promises without engaging with the limitations. As registrars we have a special responsibility to make sure that the AI we employ maintains the safety, security, and integrity of the data we steward. The Fair Information Practice Principles (FIPPs) can help guide us to positive data governance outcomes. Be wary of shiny new things. If the promise of something is too good to be true, it probably is. Explore AI and imagine ways it might be applied in your office, but AI is not the only tool available to us, and (in my opinion) we might be better served by pursuing intelligent automation solutions than artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. Pursuing an education is a political act. Working in a registrar's office means providing service. In the currently divisive political climate, with an ever diversifying student (and faculty and staff) population, how can we provide the kind of servant leadership our communities need?Key Takeaways:Being a servant leader is about treating people with respect, putting others' needs ahead of your own, listening, being empathetic, and building community. The coming years are going to be a challenge for higher education and so each of us needs to take care of ourselves, but also look out for and support one another. That includes our staff, faculty, and students. Engaging in positive action outside the office can help maintain a sense of control, a sense of purpose, and a commitment to service. One of the enduring challenges institutions face is how to assess the learning that an individual acquires when they are not enrolled at an institution, and whether and what to award as credit toward a degree in recognition for that learning. In this episode we revisit the concept of Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), and its outcome, Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), with two higher education professionals who saw the need for a better way to manage PLA so they built one. Key Takeaways:We need our students as much as our students need us. PLA is a way to build trust with our students and to affirm their learning and experiences outside of the academy. Registrars are uniquely positioned to bring transparency to the PLA process because we are the holders of so many pieces of the process. Understanding what's involved with PLA can also position registrars to advocate for it and educate others at the institution about it. PLA and the resulting CPL can lead to better student outcomes as they can move into classes that challenge them (rather than have to take lower-level classes of material they have already learned). Students who earn CPL are more likely to persist and complete a degree program.Host:Doug McKenna, University RegistrarGeorge Mason Universitycmckenn@gmu.edu Guests:Jesse Boedingjesse@educationassessmentsystem.comConnect on LinkedInKaren Fergusonkaren@educationassessmentsystem.comConnect on LinkedIn References and Additional Information:AACRAO Core Competencies - Leadership & ManagementAACRAO Professional Proficiencies - Records and Academic ServicesEducation Assessment System websiteCAEL - Credit for Prior LearningAACRAO - Innovative CredentialsAACRAO - Learning Mobility
