Send us a textFairfax criminal lawyer Jonathan Katz last month joined several hundred attendees at the Boone, NC, Ram Dass mountain legacy retreat. The experience was wonderful, with people connecting at the heart and soul level, in the beautiful mountains and clean air. Our last podcast episode features Raghu Markus, the executive director of the Ram Dass Love Serve Remember Foundation. Among those on stage at this Boone mountain retreat was Nina Rao, who with a beyond beautiful voice chants mantra, sings, and shares her essence. Nina is the yin to the yang of dharma teacher and kirtan star Krishna Das (whom Jon Katz also met at this retreat), with whom she has been closely connected for years. Jon loves the voices and music of both Nina Rao and Krishna Das. In this podcast episode, Nina shares her essence, experiences, ideas and voice. Hear her chant at minute 44:00, and get her great CD's "Anubhav" and "Antarayaami: Knower of All Hearts". Krishna Das's great music includes "Trust in the Heart" and much more. What does Nina Rao have to do with beating the prosecution? Winning in court in important part involves finding and expressing one's voice. In fact, at the Trial Lawyers College, each attendee was expected to sing solo before the group at one point or another. Jon believes strongly in finding calm in the eye of the storm, and he has attended lawyers' mindfulness retreats and previously joined with numerous gatherings of a once active local contemplative lawyers group. Hear Nina talk about living a meaningful life no matter the turmoil, about universal love, wisdom, the gifts of her teacher Sri Siddhi Ma, clarity, and giving voice to our souls. This episode is also available on YouTube. Deeply thanking and bowing to Nina Rao. Welcome to an exciting episode featuring Nina Rao, an incredible Kirtan leader who tours the world with Krishna Das. We discuss how chanting, particularly to Hanuman, can support you to feel hopeful, even in dark times, along with what is special about India's wildlife and why it needs our support. Nina educates us on the work and origins of Saving Wild Tigers, the charity that we are supporting in the Cosmic Business Salon as the next round begins on April 22. This free event features powerful conversations on building your values-based, health-centered, spiritually-aligned, and financially successful business so you can bankroll the change you want to see in the world. Sign up today!Nina Rao learned traditional chants from her grandfather in a village in South India when she was nine years old, and the chants quietly stayed with her until she rediscovered chanting with Krishna Das in New York in 1996. In 1998, she met her guru, Sri Siddhi Ma, in the foothills of the Himalayas and spent time with her regularly for 19 years. Her childhood was spent living in and moving between many countries around the world until settling in New York. Her working life began in the banking industry, and she soon moved into organizing and leading photographic wildlife safaris in Africa and India. Since 1996, Nina has worked as Krishna Das' business manager and accompanist, as well as a chant leader on her own. Nina tours with Krishna Das and was honored in 2013 to accompany him to the Grammy Awards. Also in 2013, she released her debut album, Antarayaami–Knower of All Hearts, and followed up in 2018 with her second album, Anubhav, which was entirely crowdfunded. Since 1998, she has supported conservationists in preserving the sacred wilderness and forests of India via her charity, Saving Wild Tigers.
