There was a pūjārī here for many years, taking care of this Deity, and something amazing happened to him that increased his faith a million-fold in Advaita Ācārya. Should I say what it is? He was sitting here one day, and he saw Westerners come here. They were chanting just like we were when we came in, and they were offering obeisances to Advaita Ācārya and walking over. It was the first time he had ever seen Western people come here. And he approached one of them and said, "Who are you? Where did you come from?" And they said, "Oh, we're disciples of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda." The man broke into tears, and he said, "He did it, he did it." And then he told them the story that one day, when he was here in this lonely place because not many people used to come here, he saw a sādhu all alone come here, sit down, and was praying all day long here. He approached him and asked him who he was and what he was doing. This sādhu told him that, "My spiritual master has given me an impossible assignment, at least in my life I don't see how it's possible because I'm now approaching seventy years old, and he asked me to go to the West to teach Kṛṣṇa consciousness to the Westerners. And he said I have no money. I'm trying to get passage on a ship to go to America, and I have to fulfill the order of My Spiritual Master, but I'm not sure how it will happen. I just know I have to do it, and therefore I've come here to pray to Advaita Ācārya, who's the one who inaugurated the Krishna Consciousness Movement by inviting Sri Caitanya Mahāprabhu." That man never saw that sādhu again, ever, until these Westerners came back here and showed him a picture of the Back to Godhead magazine. There was Prabhupāda with his international movement. He had reached every continent of the world, and people everywhere were chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. He had opened 108 temples, and that Bhagavad-gītā class, just like Advaita Ācārya had started here hundreds of years ago, was now going on in Des Moines, Iowa; London, Mombasa, Toledo, Siberia, San Francisco, Bolivia - La Paz, Argentina, Toronto. I mean, there's a huge community in Toronto. How did it get there? It started here with Prabhupāda's prayers, and we can go on all day, shouting out cities, and we'll know that it's there. The Bhagavad-gītā, as it is, is being taught in all these places. So this There was a pūjārī here for many years, taking care of this Deity, and something amazing happened to him that increased his faith a million-fold in Advaita Ācārya. Should I say what it is? As early as this morning, I heard Prabhupāda speaking about how, when we travel, we have many requirements to get from one place to another. For instance, going to a foreign country, he said, requires a visa. He said for his, coming to America, he had to show his bonafides and he had to have some special paperwork. And he said for going anywhere, we need to prepare ourselves. It's not that just willy-nilly you can go from one place to another, nor can you willy-nilly just go back to Godhead by accident. It's a 'śīla,' it's a cultivation that one enacts in this lifetime, and one develops one's bonafides. And you get a visa and a passport and so forth. You should have your paperwork in order. Like right now, we're already thinking about just going from here to Calcutta It is a big deal, right? Say yes, otherwise, you may be left behind. I mean, you've got to figure out how much you can bring; you've got to figure out is my ticket, is it my name spelled correctly, and so forth. So there's this sense Prabhupāda was instilling in us, and I mean by this lecture he was giving this morning is, don't think that it's something that just happens if you're haphazard, but be very deliberate about it. So this verse inspires us in this way to look at the end of life. 'Ante' means the end when you leave the body and we've been reading every evening chapter of Bhagavad-gītā chapter 15 in which Kṛṣṇa gives the science of what happens when you leave your body. Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta took up the modern dress and used conveyances like you'll see a picture of Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta coming into Radhā-kunda to emphasize the point of yukta vairāgya. Let's use everything, all technology, modern appearances, and so forth, in order to spread Kṛṣṇa consciousness all over the world. Meanwhile, the babājīs in Radhā-kunda, as an example, were still wearing the very scant dress of Rūpa Sanātana and not touching the world. They wouldn't wear shoes and so forth. What did Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta do? He wore shoes into Radhā-kund, and you'll see a picture of him in a car, a nice car, a convertible with a European jacket on, coming into Radhā-kund, then he had shoes on, and so did his followers. He was making a point there that this is yukta vairāgya. We should use everything in order to attract people to Kṛṣṇa consciousness and not alienate them nor should we alienate ourselves and stay aloof from everyone. So Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta brought that mood. He instilled it in the heart of his disciple Abhay Caranāravinda, who later became a sannyāsi and was awarded the title of Bhaktivedānta amongst his peers who had noted his scholarship. And then, of course, Prabhupāda, which was a term of respect that his disciples asked if they could call him as he had called his spiritual master. So Prabhupāda said that the grandfather, or the great grandfather, as the case may be, is more merciful than even the father. We can take much from Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvati Ṭhākur and get his mercy to empower us to use everything in Kṛṣṇa service and also to preach Kṛṣṇa consciousness all over the world. He won't mind a bit if you sacrifice to your peace of mind to go out and give others the chance to take Kṛṣṇa Consciousness in fact this is the emblem of advancement in spiritual in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, not that we keep it for ourselves, or that we go in and stay aloof and just chant for ourselves. Now I'm going to read you just a few of his final instructions that he gave, and you'll be surprised how relevant and practical these are. So coming to the Yogapīṭha and recognizing, through understanding the philosophy of Bhagavad Gītā and Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, that a perfect relationship is available with the perfect person. It makes the heart jump to think that this could be possible. In fact, we've been disappointed so many times. Krishna says, "Vita Raghava, you have to give up this disappointment and recognize that you do have the possibility of having a relationship with me." So here at Yogapīṭha, you can make a sankalpa, "Krishna, I'm going to bring my attention to you," and that can be done. "Yāḥ śrutvā tat-paro bhavet (SB 10.33.36)," by hearing about Krishna, if you hear Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, you become inoculated from all of the foolish ways of interacting with the world, like Purūravā and Urvaśī. If you read those two chapters, then you see what you look like when you become enamored by a temporary relationship in this world where you're writing poetry that goes like this: "I love you. I love you so." And Purūravā looks foolish to us, and so as I've said over consistently during the Yatra, don't fool around. What's the name of the artist? As Elvin Bishop wrote in his song, "I Fooled Around and Fell in Love." Don't fool around. This coming to Yogapīṭha means no more fooling around. I'm going to fall in love with Lord Caitanya. I'm not going to fool around and fall in love here in this material world yet again and take rebirth, because I'm enamored of a temporary form. Get enamored of the eternal form. Carry a picture of Krishna around with you. Go to the temple, see Krishna. Take brahminical initiation. Worship Krishna on the altar. Dress him, bathe him, chant His name, take caraṇāmṛta, and think of His lotus feet. Go out and teach Krishna consciousness to others and see that everyone's just fooling around. Prabhupāda has said that the Acharya, the guru, the śāstra, can give us hints for advancing in spiritual life, but we have to do the work. There's another related point to determination and effort. You may have a good lineage of gurus, and the śāstra is always there, but we're the ones who have to apply it. A couple of other points are: practice while you have the chance; if not now, when? And I think it was Akshina Maṅgala this morning who noticed that sometimes the doors for the deities close sooner than you think. It's like, 'Oh, I'm just getting Darśana for two seconds,' and all of a sudden the door closes. We don't know when the door closes for us at any time. So, it's good to take advantage of every opportunity. And the other point Prabhupāda makes is that we have to be aware that we have to fly solo at some point. Just as when we're studying to fly in an airplane and we have an instructor there, but at some point, you have to take your solo flight. And Prabhupāda relates to the point about how it comes down to our own individual determination and effort, that we actually have to make the effort to do it and be prepared, because it'll come down to our determination that we've developed from our practice.
