What if surrender wasn't weakness, but your gateway to more freedom, more power, and more magic? In this episode, I speak with transformational teacher and bestselling author Kute Blackson - my very first male guest -about a topic that's at the heart of midlife transformation: surrender. And not the kind that asks you to give up, but the kind that cracks you open and calls you home to your wild, feminine truth.Kute's powerful perspective on surrender as the portal to authenticity, creativity, and freedom is exactly the divine masculine energy many of us didn't realise we were craving. We talk about why surrender has been misunderstood -especially for women - and how it holds the key to navigating grief, identity shifts, and deeper embodiment in midlife.Tune in to hear Kute share:Why surrender is not passive, but powerfulThe difference between control and alignmentThe grief and letting go required to fully step into midlifeHow women can reclaim their wild, intuitive, embodied natureThe societal systems that have kept us disconnected from our powerThe masculine and feminine dance of creation, and what real partnership looks likeHow to trust the unknown and let life live youWhether you're navigating change, loss, or the call to become more you - this episode is here to remind you: you don't need to hold it all together to step into your power. It's time to redefine surrender.Connect with Kute:Website: kuteblackson.comFree 8-part course: eightlevelsofgratitude.comInstagram: @kuteblacksonPodcast: Soul TalkBook: The Magic of Surrender – Available now via AmazonConnect with me:Instagram: @pennyvandersluys - Follow my 52 Shades of Fifty Project Sign up for the Bringing Sexy Back Challenge (May 2–4): pennyvandersluys.com/sexybackDownload my free 10 Tips to Turn On: pennyvandersluys.com
The energy of 2025 continues to guide us through powerful shifts, reshaping the collective consciousness in ways that can no longer be ignored. The month ahead brings a profound spiritual change as we close the Pisces season, completing an activation beneath the surface. As we step into a new astrological year, we are not just crossing into Aries season but into a new era. Eclipse season and the Spring equinox with Mercury, Venus retrograde, and Neptune entering Aries is a POWER month. This month's energy demands our presence, awareness, and trust. Some themes we can expect as we launch into a new era include:New inventions, wealth on all levels, health and healingDiscovery of hidden treasures, order, harmony, and establishing healthy connectionsIncreased clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentienceRevelation through meditations, dreams, signs, and synchronicities in natureThe age of passive dreaming is over—this is about bringing the vision into reality.Technology is about to accelerate in ways that require ethical discussions: artificial intelligence, bioengineering, and virtual reality are not only seen as tools to some but also extensions of a person's identity. But, with that, we cannot lose touch with the true essence of things found in nature beyond AI, computers, phones, televisions, etc. Music, art, and culture will reject watered-down trends in favor of something authentic, vital, and genuine. The same applies to spirituality—what was once packaged and sold as enlightenment will be challenged, dismantled, and redefined. Spirituality is about seeking our higher self, our truth, and our connection with what we know to be our truth. Listen as Laurie shares her perspective of the month. We live in a culture that constantly tells us to push harder, achieve more, and stay on top of everything. But this relentless striving often keeps us from the fulfillment we seek. Many of us face anxiety, procrastination, and burnout as we struggle to accept that the key to a more meaningful life lies in embracing our limitations rather than fighting against them. This week, I'm honored to welcome Oliver Burkeman, bestselling author of Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals, as our special guest. Oliver's work challenges the conventional approach to productivity, urging us to face our inherent human limitations and embrace the concept of finitude. His insights offer a refreshing perspective on how to live with greater intention, focusing on what truly matters rather than constantly striving for control. In his new book Meditation for Mortals, Oliver goes even deeper into the themes of time, control, and human limitation, offering a counterintuitive yet liberating approach to living well in a finite world. His philosophy encourages us to accept our limits and let go of the need to constantly “do it all.”In this episode, Oliver walks us through the journey of moving from understanding the constraints of time to taking meaningful action. We dive deep into the concept of finitude—our finite time, energy, and capacity—and explore how surrendering to life's limitations and letting go of the need for control can lead to a more purposeful, fulfilling life.Tune in to learn how embracing our limitations can lead to profound freedom, allowing us to live fully within those boundaries and create a life of intentionality, meaning, and true presence.Topics CoveredEmbracing the concept of finitude and human limitationsHow to let go of control and live more intentionallyThe connection between productivity and surrenderOliver's journey from Four Thousand Weeks to Meditation for MortalsThe role of mindfulness in taking meaningful actionWhy hustle culture leads to burnout and dissatisfactionPractical strategies for accepting our finite natureThe paradox of letting go and achieving moreOvercoming procrastination and anxiety by facing our limitsHow to align daily actions with what truly mattersTranscriptYou can find the transcript on the episode's web page by clicking here.Oliver's Bio & ResourcesOliver Burkeman's books include the forthcoming Meditations for Mortals, about embracing limitation and getting around to what counts, along with the New York Times bestseller Four Thousand Weeks and The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking. SummaryIn this episode, Ron Hayes and Jason Loftus are joined by guest Nehemiah Ray, and they share discussions of how venturing into the wild in their childhood has developed a strong appreciation for the finer details in nature. Nehemiah Ray, a wildlife professional, shares his philosophy for raising his children to appreciate the wonders of nature. This episode digs into the importance of family, outdoor experiences, wildlife biology, and the impact of human behaviour on ecosystems. Nehemiah Ray shares his experiences with nature, wildlife removal, and the importance of teaching children to appreciate and respect the natural world. The conversation covers a wide range of topics related to nature, wildlife, and exploring the natural world. It delves into the impact of invasive species, the importance of understanding wild edible plants, the value of foraging, and the significance of being aware of one's environment. The conversation also highlights the benefits of spending time in nature, the challenges today's technology has on kids, how it limits their opportunity for outdoor experiences and the influence of childhood experiences on adult perspectives.TakeawaysTeaching children to appreciate and respect nature is important for their development.Human behavior, including the release of pets into the wild, can have significant consequences for ecosystems.Wildlife removal and the coexistence of humans and wildlife is a complex and important aspect of environmental management. Understanding the impact of invasive species on ecosystemsThe value of learning about wild edible plants and foragingThe importance of environmental awareness and spending time in natureThe impact of childhood experiences on adult perspectivesHow technology is limiting today's youth from having outdoor experiencesSound Bites"It's not about not being afraid. It's about being able to overcome it.""The impact on the ecosystem, you know, just by people releasing pets is significant.""Don't keep a pet that should be wild. And secondly, don't ever turn them loose. There's always other options. But if you go turn them loose, then the ecosystem is dealing with a problem that you didn't want to manage. So.""The grocery stores have such a small amount of foods that we eat. And granted, I know shelf life and all those types of things play a part into it, but I really want to teach them at a young age to be explorative. Don't just go with what's offered to you.""It's really easy to admire the mountains. It's a lot more difficult to admire the molehill. Being able to ... You don't have to go far. You don't have to take a trip to Yellowstone, which, I mean, that's on the bucket list for me. Fancy Scientist: A Material Girl Living in a Sustainable World
As someone who deeply values the importance of connecting people with nature, I was thrilled to have John Muir Laws as a guest on the latest episode of The Fancy Scientist podcast. Ever since completing my PhD and working with kids, I've recognized that fostering an emotional attachment to nature, especially during childhood, is a central solution to all conservation problems. Because when people aren't emotionally attached to nature, they won't know how to care about its decline and loss. These attachments are formed from experiences in nature. And what better way to cultivate that connection than through the beautiful practice of nature journaling?Nature journaling is the simple, yet profound act of using a notebook to record and draw your observations, questions, and reflections about the natural world around you. By slowing down and paying close attention to details, you not only deepen your appreciation for nature but also enhance your ability to remember and learn.John Muir Laws is a champion of this transformative practice. With a background in wildlife biology and a lifelong passion for nature exploration, he has dedicated himself to spreading the joy and wisdom of nature journaling across the globe. In an era where technology often disconnects us from the great outdoors, his mission to reconnect people with the natural world is more relevant than ever.In our conversation, John shared fascinating insights and practical tips for embracing nature journaling. We explored the benefits it offers for both children and adults, discussed strategies for overcoming the initial hesitancy (especially for us grown-ups!), and celebrated the sheer magic that unfolds when we immerse ourselves in the present moment, pen and notebook in hand.Specifically, we discussed:What exactly is nature journaling and how to get startedThe benefits of nature journaling and being out in natureThe power of nature journaling in fostering deep observation, curiosity, and wonderPractical techniques for engaging kids in nature journaling, including prompts and scaffoldingOvercoming the fear of "not being good enough" at drawing or writing, and embracing the journeyThe importance of role-modeling present, nature-connected behavior for childrenStrategies for making nature accessible and welcoming to people of all backgroundsAnd MORE!!Whether you're a seasoned nature lover or someone seeking to reignite your connection with the great outdoors, this episode is a delightful invitation to slow down, observe, and capture the beauty that surrounds us. So grab your notebook, sharpen those pencils, and get ready to embark on a journey of discovery and appreciation through the art of nature journaling.Happy journaling, my fellow nature enthusiasts!I'm Dr. Stephanie Manka (formerly Schuttler), a wildlife biologist of nearly 20 yrs with 20+ peer-reviewed scientific publications, author of the book Getting a Job in Wildlife Biology: What It's Like and What You Need to Know (https://www.amazon.com/Getting-Job-Wildlife-Biology-What/dp/B08JDYXS4G/) and founder of Fancy Scientist. In today's episode we discuss King Hubbert the technocrat and scientist with a flawed methodology and Malthusian worldview. We also go over a brief history of the Rockefeller starting with John D. Rockefeller's rapist snake oil salesman father up to the offspring that would dominate the world oil market during the Cold War years. The majority of the episode we discuss a theory outside of the conventional western geological orthodoxy that challenges the very notion that petroleum is dinosaur goo. Oh yeah, we're talking abiotic oil theory my friends. Abiotic oil would come out of the Soviet Union during the Cold War when Stalin realized that being dependent on the west for oil could be a possible death sentence for Russia so he would create a project to study all the various aspects of oil in a move that some people have compared to the Manhattan Project in scope. This is an interesting one and if the theory of Abiotic Oil is true it would change the way we think about geology and geopolitics at a fundamental level. I personally find the theory of Abiotic Oil persuasive, but I am by no means an expert in geology so take what I say with a grain of salt and enjoy this slippery ride.Sources:Myths, Lies and Oil Wars by F William EngdahlEndless Oil? Raffaello Manacorda, Lead ISTA Facilitator, shares how sex and the shadow (repressed parts of ourselves) are parts of life but are both hidden. To live and express ourselves fully, we need to dive into these parts with full transparency and radical honesty. Because of the cultural and societal nature of this repression, unravelling the hiddenness needs to be done in groups, not alone or with another therapist only...In this episode, hear Raffaello discuss:Rape fantasies which exist at the intersection of sex and the shadowHow bringing shadows into the light dissolves shame and restores joy and powerThe role of partners and close friends in identifying our shadows (and their limits for effective support)Why it's essential to do shadow work in the contexts of dedicated groupsHow leaving your shadow hidden makes you susceptible to influence and being controlledWhy the shadow is NOT a solely psychoanalytical beast — it has a physical, visceral natureThe powerful role of sexual energy and relationships in shadow workIf you liked this episode, please leave a rating and review! On today’s show, Chong and Dan address the idea of freedom, its promises and perils. We start with a popular definition of freedom ("I can do whatever I want, and not be subject to anything else") and trace its roots to the Existentialist philosophy of the 20th century. We then discuss examples of how this idea is expressed in (Western) society and culture, before tackling the problems with it. Rather than focusing on freedom, should we instead be thinking more carefully about the constraints and aspirations we wish to live by?Connect with usInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/ingoodfaithfmTwitter - https://twitter.com/ingoodfaithfmEmail - ingoodfaithmail@gmail.comShow notesFreedom - definition and roots (06:13)Pop culture definitionExistentialist philosophy - "existence precedes essence"Freedom to (do whatever I want); freedom from (any constraints)Existentialism (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)Examples in society and culture (18:13)Disney - Frozen and ZootopiaAdvertisingRick and Morty (Season 1, Episode 8)Natasha Bedingfield - "Unwritten"Youtube - Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten (Official Video)The problems with existential freedom (33:26)No such thing as freedom from everything and freedom to do anythingPursuit of freedom can be at odds with good/evil and human natureThe paradox of freedom - more freedom is not an unambiguous goodConclusion (54:13)A cautionary tale of desiring freedom from Dante's InfernoWikipedia - Dante's Satan
I'm truly honored to have Arun Gandhi on for this episode. Arun is the fifth grandson of one of my - and the world's - greatest heroes, Mahatma Gandhi. Arun was a journalist for more than thirty years. Arun serves as president of the Gandhi Worldwide Education Institute and travels the world speaking to governmental leaders as well as students about the practices of peace and nonviolence. His first of two books for children was Grandfather Gandhi. It's clearly in the Gandhi blood to fight for what's right while causing no harm. Arun's words of wisdom are inspiring and prescribe a remedy for a world filled with hate and selfishness. But what will really get you in this episode are the stories from his childhood, learning lessons from his larger-than-life grandpa who went on to become one of the most influential men in world history.Listen as we discuss:The job of being a peace farmerHow the world wants peace but has no idea what that looks likeHow peace extends to harmony between not only people, but also natureThe poison of materialism that has made us selfish, exploitative, and invested in a culture of violence to protect our thingsThe Tree of Violence, and how passive violence leads to physical violenceThe anecdote of the pencil, as told to Arun by his grandfatherActing responsibly in the "Throw-away Economy"The power of anger as a circuit breaker, and practical advice for channeling it into problem-solving rather than revenge The firm spirit of nonviolence: "I'm not fighting an enemy. I'm transforming a friend."Discussing the historical implication of the iconic photo of Gandhi spinning Finding peace in a grain of wheat: "If you keep peace in your heart, it will perish with you. Mark Huelsing is a Dad, Husband, hunter, and just so happens to work at Exo Mountain Gear, however, on this episode of The By Land Podcast, we go in a bit of a different direction. No gear talk and no hunting stories (ok..maybe one). I've always appreciated Mark's insight that goes beyond the generic gear talk. Anytime I need an outside opinion on something, he's ready and willing to offer a thoughtful perspective.I reached out to Mark and asked if he'd want to come on the show to chat. He initially told me he probably didn't have anything important to talk about, but after shooting me a few things he'd been thinking about lately, we set a time and made it happen. This is NOT a gear episode. Instead, this is more of a conversation you'd have at the end of a long day on the trail or hunt while sitting around a campfire. We cover everything from why it's good for you to be bad at something, the feeling of needing to be productive with your time in the outdoors while also wanting to relax, and the realization that some of us might not ever be the worlds greatest hunter. If you're in the mood for a conversation that explores more than just gear and stories, this is the one for you. And we're back! Episode 29 looks at the first few lines of chapter 42, which is a confusing paragraph about the creation of the universe and the yin-yang harmony. However, if we read carefully and creatively, I think we can find some powerful lessons in here.In this episode, I start by considering just one of those practical lessons: the idea of finding balance or harmony between work and rest. The rest of the episode is divided into four parts:The Tao creates one; the one creates two - on unity in the world and the dangers of dualistic thinkingThe two creates three - the "third thing" as a reality of natureThe third thing in practice - how this idea can practically affect our (1) emotional health, (2) faith/spiritual health, (3) intellectual health, and (4) ability to cultivate healthy, loving relationshipsSee more at www.coreyfarr.comSupport the show (http://www.patreon.com/crttc)
“It’s a bit of an extreme challenge. I’m sure people think I’m insane and it’s stupid, but it’s not. It’s going to work.”Jeff Rotmeyer is a special human being. The founder and CEO of two NGO's, he was born and raised on the West Coast of Canada and moved to Hong Kong 15 years ago as a fresh-faced young English teacher. In 2017, reluctant to pay lawyers for two days work instead of one, he registered two new charities on the same day. Giving up his career as an English Teacher, Jeff doubled-down on his commitment to helping some of the most disadvantaged and marginalised communities. ImpactHK serves the city’s homeless population with cooked meals, love, and friendship every single day of the week on their now famous ‘kindness walks’. Driven by a dedicated team of volunteers, the charity has helped hundreds of people with finding accommodation, drug rehabilitation, and gainful employment. Half of their full-time employees used to live on the streets, and many more have had their lives transformed as a result of Jeff’s vision for a kinder world.Love21Foundation exists to help the families of kids with Autism and Down Syndrome reach their full potential. Emphasis is placed on helping low-income and single-parent families who would otherwise struggle with the enormous financial costs and lack of access to activities that many of us take for granted. Both organisations have been enormously successful in recent years in building awareness and delivering real change, thanks in large part to Jeff’s insatiable work ethic and passion for creating a more inclusive and compassionate society. Alissa Callen's wide-open-space romances – whether set in the Australian outback or Montana mountains – give a bright lift to the darkest day. That's what her readers tell her, and she couldn't hope for a more rewarding response. Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler and today USA Today Best Selling author Alissa talks about what she loves most about writing rural and small-town fiction, and why she's thrilled her books are in school libraries. Six things you'll learn from this Joys of Binge Reading episode: Why readers love small town romanceHow you can have too much shopping and cocktailsThe one thing she'd do differently next time roundYarn bombing in Dubbo - it is a thingThe healing power of natureThe nicest thing a reader ever said Where to find Alissa Callen: Website: www.alissacallen.com Facebook: @AlissaCallenAuthor What follows is a "near as" transcript of our conversation, not word for word but pretty close to it, with links to important mentions. Jenny: And now here's Alissa. Hello there, Alissa, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Alissa: It's such a pleasure to be here. Alissa Callen - Author of rural and small town romance Jenny: Beginning at the beginning, was there a Once Upon a Time moment when you decided you wanted to write fiction, as distinct from other things you might have written. And if so what was the catalyst for it. Alissa: I think I'm that stereotypical writer who was that childhood reader. And if I look back I probably read too many books and probably needed to get another life. But I was a very avid reader as a child/bookworm. And then I did English at university because that was my thing. And I've always wanted to write and I dabbled at writing but it wasn't a definitive decision that I needed to do this. Words always been her "thing" I have four children and somehow I had time amongst raising my children. I thought 'Oh I might actually put pen to paper.' And I did! I grew up in the country. I live on a small farm now. So it was only natural that my stories played themselves out against a rural backdrop. I have also lived in America and I love the mountains over there. So I'm just really lucky that what I love to write, is actually what the market will read because I can't imagine myself writing anything else. Words have always been my thing. From a family of scientists And it's really interesting because I come from a family of scientists. We have a lot of very analytical brains in the family, and I'm the odd one out. It is interesting because through the wonders of DNA we've actually found a missing branch of my family tree and that's where I fit. There's a professor of medieval literature there. There is another person who writes, so I think writing has always just been in me and it's who I am. Jenny: You describe your books as small town and rural fiction but they are really sweet romance stories when you look at the heart of them, aren't they? Alissa: They are. I think it's very interesting because I do write for the two markets and I find that small town stories and rural fiction in Australia are interchangeable terms really. Sweet clean romance Rural fiction has such a wide spectrum. You can have small town books. You can have medical romance, you can have medical suspense, as well as rural fiction. So in Australia there's such a wide umbrella. But then for the American market they don't have the term ‘rural romance' so it's just basically small town. But their core ingredients are very similar. And I think that they are essentially romance. In another life I was a counsellor and I do know that life doesn't deliver the 'happily ever after' for everyone. So I was drawn to a genre where it doesn't matter what my characters go through. At the end there's an uplifting and feel good ending, because I know in real life that things don't always turn out that way.

Simplicity parenting, in many ways, is the antithesis of modern parenting. Simplicity parenting prioritizes a balanced schedule, predictable rhythm, and decluttered, information-filtered family environment, while most modern families rush from one activity to the next and live with crammed-full schedules in an information-soaked environment.Kim John Payne, author of Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Calmer, Happier, and More Secure Kids, was an undergrad psychology student when he first noticed striking similarities in the behavior of PTSD-affected soldiers, teenagers who grew up in abusive homes, and children who lived in warzones. “They were nervous, jumpy, hyperactive, and overstretched,” Payne says. Their nervous systems were hyperactive and hyper-attuned to the environment. In a few years, Payne began noticing similar behavior in children all over and surmised that there must be an “undeclared war on childhood,” as the kids exhibited all the signs of living in a war zone. But there were no battle lines, fronts, or bomb craters. Instead, these kids (and their families) lived quite ordinary lives. However, by that time, “overwhelmed family life had become the new normal.” And that new normal was not at all kid-friendly.“It became more and more obvious that children, and especially boys, were living in a child-hostile environment,” he says. As a result, kids' nervous systems were “out of whack” and many kids were (and are) in a near-constant state of fight-flight-freeze-or-flock. Kids (and boys especially) often reacted “as if their lives depended on it,” when they were asked to do something as simple as putting a coat on.Simplicity is the Antidote to OverwhelmThe antidote to constant overwhelm is simple, Payne says. It's simplicity. He advises parents to “dial back” and simplify their lives, and the results have been remarkable.“I can't tell you how many parents have said, ‘I feel like I've gotten my boy back.'” Payne says. Many parents also notice that their boys are back to their “quirky selves.”It's not easy, however, to push back against the status quo. “The difficulty comes when we look around our neighborhoods,” Payne says. “There are so many parents that have normalized what is not normal for a child's nervous system.” But deliberately simplifying your lives — cutting out extraneous extracurricular activities, limiting screen time and info exposure, and prioritizing play, family, and connections, can pay dividends.“If we've built in time and balance in a boy's life, and slowly built in time in nature, time with family, time with friends, that morphs into a strong inner loci” for the boy, Payne says. “As young men, they are much stronger and defined in who they are.”In this episode, Jen, Janet, & Kim discuss:The genesis of the simplicity parenting movementWhy simplifying family life can improve boys' behaviorThe link between “quirks,” disordered behaviors, and giftsHow (& why) dialing back stress helps reveal boys' giftsBalancing you family's scheduleWhy delayed gratification and anticipation are good for kidsIncreasing boys' connection to natureThe importance of playHelping kids connect to “their own true north”How simplifying family life will prepare your son for jobs of the futureBenefits of simplicity parenting for parentsLinks we mentioned (or should have) in this episode:SimplicityParenting.com — Kim's website (includes links to the Simplicity Starter Kit, his podcast, and more)Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Calmer, Happier, and More Secure Kids, by Kim John PayneVideo Game Addiction — ON BOYS episodeRichard Louv on Animals, Nature, and Boys — ON BOYS episodeFinding Ecohappiness –ON BOYS episodeSponsor Spotlight: Green ChefHealthy, Organic, Meal Kit Delivery Service.
