One of the crucial ideas in finance is that markets are efficient – that they fully reflect all available information. If so, what about market bubbles?Over the last year, people have been willing to pay exorbitant amounts for extremely odd assets such as Non-Fungible Tokens, meme stocks etc. Why do they do this? This lecture will explore some investors' systematic behavioural biases, and how these can be used to predict returns. This lecture was recorded by Raghavendra Rau on 10th June 2024 at Barnard's Inn Hall, LondonThe transcript of the lecture is available from the Gresham College website:https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/market-efficiencyGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. In every financial transaction, one side has more information than the other. For example, when someone buys a used car, the seller will know better than the buyer whether the car is a plum or a lemon. People who know their intrinsic desire to follow a craft/art but are afraid of being judged. People who are shy to ask for help (as I did initially) but muster courage to ask anyway with a willingness to accept "no". Friends like Bindu and Vidya who understand people like me and spend their time and effort to listen, write, take pictures and provide the lyrics. And many more …. I am thankful to all. Now I am stepping out of all seriousness in identifying the above groups, wiping my tears and I am LOL. I listened to this Devotional song in the 1980s using Tape Recorder. I made attempts to learn the song by writing on a paper, pausing the tape several times during short intervals of my fast paced High profile Management position. In 1997 my dependent visa H4 made me learn this song with mixed emotions of losing my signature strength of a career oriented person. After donating my tape recorder and finding that song on YouTube, I chose to learn it again. This time I took help from my friend Bindu who graciously and immediately sent me her beautiful handwritten lyrics ( my Tamil is not that good lol) after listening to the song from YouTube. Now I invite you to listen to my song learned from YouTube with no training from a teacher. Guru Raghavendra please forgive me for any mistakes. This is purely my bhakthi transformed into a song. There is no dearth of Miracles around the world.India abounds in them. There is this reported incidence of Saint Raghavendra having spoken to Sir.Thomas Munro, the then District Collector of Bellary, in the year 1800, when Munro went to confiscate the land where Saint Raghavendra had attained Jeeva Samadhi. This was gazetted in the then Madras Presidency. .When Sir Thomas Munroe was the Collector of Bellary in 1800, the Madras Government ordered him to procure the entire income from the Math and Manthralaya village. When the Revenue officials were unable to comply with this order, Sir Thomas Munroe visited the Math for investigation. He removed his hat and shoes and entered the sacred precincts. Sri Rayaru emerged from the Brindavan and conversed with him for sometime, about the resumption of endowment. The Saint was visible and audible only to Munroe who received Manthraksha. The Collector went back and wrote an order in favour of the Math and the village. This notification was published in the Madras Government Gazette in Chapter XI and page 213, with the caption “Manchali Adoni Taluka”. This order is still preserved in Fort St. George and Manthralayam.https://ramanisblog-in.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/ramanisblog.in/2014/01/23/saint-who-spoke-from-tomb-gazetted/amp/?amp_gsa=1&_js_v=a9&usqp=mq331AQKKAFQArABIIACAw%3D%3D#amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&aoh=16462908765715&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&share=https%3A%2F%2Framanisblog.in%2F2014%2F01%2F23%2Fsaint-who-spoke-from-tomb-gazetted%2F --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ramanispodcast/message

Raghavendra Kulkarni, is responsible for developing new Innovation Strategies and Business Ecosystems at Bosch. In this podcast we discuss not just internet of things (IoT) but also the concept of Economy of Things and how blockchain is an enabler for combining IoT devices to business models.   What is blockchain? How we perceive Blockchain within Bosch. Three aspects to blockchain: Decentralisation Immutability Exchange of consensus - collaboration Web 2.0 has created centralised platform monopolies. Internet of things (IoT) coupled with a decentralised ledger operates well within a decentralised ecosystem. The second aspect is immutability where you can have an immutable trail of an identity or of data. The third aspect is where you have consensus which is driven by collaboration. In principle what Bosch believes in is blockchain as a technology which will enable decentralised algorithmic consensus in the context of things.   What is Internet of Things (IoT)? Raghavendra looks at Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs for things and has identified three levels: IoT can be looked from there levels: First level is you look at a physical device. When the device is connected you look at what are the attributes of that device when it is connected to the web. The second level is making the connected device smart where you enable it to have automation attributes. The third level is making the device autonomous. Raghavendra believes the IoT is all about the connection of the physical into the digital world. IoT sits in all three aspects of the digital world: Edge - the connection between the physical object and the activities around that physical object are Middleware - is where IoT have to operate into systems of subsystems Infrastructure - the pure data   Blockchain and IoT Bosch believes blockchain will play a very important role in enabling things from automation to autonomic. IoT has enabled the automation of a number of things. Where blockchain comes in, is in enabling those autonomous devices to make decisions on their own, by making these devices into economic ones. That is the game changer opportunity in combining blockchain with IoT. Bosch as a company predominantly operates as a company in sensor software and services. In the context of blockchain, Bosch’s entire pursuit has been to enable sensing devices to become economic agents. When talking about economic agents, it’s about deriving value from those sensing devices, settling a value when you settle a transaction. Bosch believes blockchain would help connected smart devices become economic devices.   Bosch – Economy of Things   On the 15th of May 2019 at the “ConnectedWorld Event” in Berlin, Bosch announced a tagline “from the Internet of Things to the Economy of Things”. Raghavendra explained that when we talk about IoT it is really a conversation that is restricted to the technology of devices being connected. Economy of things is the principle of taking a technology and combining it to a business model. An example Raghavendra uses is if you take a machine and create a tender for it that states that for this machine to do an activity today it would cost $10. The operator would have to create cycles and set it all up. In an economy of things scenario, the machine could consider its own resources and availability and broadcast to a network its own contracts and availability. Once agreement is made it can also settle its own transactions. Additionally, at Bosch they believe the acceleration of AI adoption will happen if it is on the blockchain. With blockchain AI gets the provenance of data, the provenance of the models and if the AI is self-learning or has unsupervised algorithms it resides on the ledger.   Democratising the internet Over the last decade the internet as a technology has really commodities the hardware. Whether it is a car or a machine the value that these things have i...
