Are you ever intimidated by spices? Unsure what spice to add to which meal? If so, you might be missing out on some incredible health benefits! Spices are packed full of polyphenols which means they offer our body something really unique. Oh, and they taste great too. So how can we introduce more spices into our meals? Kanchan Koya is here to share the science of spices and show us how easy it is to make them a staple of our cooking.
Today we're off to somewhere special, to a city called Lausanne, located on the northern shore of Lake Geneva in Switzerland, to chat with our guest, Ms. Kanchan Chanana. Kanchan describes herself as an observer, curious and a striving human who's actively broken given norms, rules and excuses for the past two decades to unlock the other side of being. She's a first-generation professional in STEM and management. However, growing up came with considerable challenges from the many norms, beliefs, and rules that she felt suffocated by. Mentions of money, for example, were simply out of the question. Her academic journey proved adventurous, starting in an all-girls government school and deciding to pursue mechanical engineering, where she was the only girl in a class of 50. Her professional career started in a male-dominated world of automotive procurement. She became the youngest buyer responsible for managing spending of more than $100 million, and this role enabled her to oversee successful and complex negotiations with top suppliers and to understand the link between money and authority. Three years later, she went on to pursue management studies in India and the United States and then joined a leading consulting firm where she worked in the US, Southeast Asia, and India, solving complex business problems for large multinational organizations. This role further expanded her understanding of money, authority, and decision-making. Some six years later, she joined the strategy function of a Global 500 corporation and found numerous systemic gaps leading to leakages in women's payslips every month, every year. This inspired her to speak up for equal pay for women at her workplace, which led to serial abuse behaviors, exclusion, non-transparency, baits, bribery, threats, and eventually a non-mutual separation. Kanchan's journey has revealed visible and invisible challenges to achieving equal and fair pay for women. She notes that in Switzerland alone, the women's pay gap amounts to more than $45 billion annually. Kanchan's story is to enable, educate, and engage women on the taboo topic of unfair pay. Team, I truly hope you're fully prepared for the conversation ahead and ready to practice some active listening because there's a powerful message that awaits all of us as listeners. Having earned her PhD in molecular biology at Harvard, Kanchan was intrigued when her research lab delved into exploring turmeric's beneficial properties—a spice deeply ingrained in her Indian upbringing, where its benefits were revered and understood through ancient tradition. This revelation sparked her curiosity about the overlooked and misunderstood facets of spices. As a mother, when she began incorporating traditional spices into her child's meals, she recognized a significant knowledge gap and fear of using spices in children's food by other parents.Motivated by this realization, Kayan dedicated her career to breaking down the barriers surrounding spices and understanding the benefits they have in our lives. In today's episode, we delve into Kanchan's unconventional journey, hoping to inspire you to embrace the less-traveled path and add a dash of spice to your holiday menu.To learn more about Athletic Brewing's award-winning non-alcoholic craft beer, go to AthleticBrewing.com and follow us at @AthleticBrewing.

Kanchan Koya grew up in a house filled with wonderful fragrances from the spices simmering on her grandmother's stove. In India, it was a common belief that spices were more than just pleasant tastes. Ancient wisdom said they had medicinal properties, and it was common for household medicine cabinets to store dried spices, not pills. Kanchan grew up to become a molecular biologist, studying in the US at Harvard Medical School. When her lab began to investigate turmeric's healing properties, the ancient wisdom from her childhood met the scientific inquiry of her adult life - beginning a lifelong obsession with the health benefits of spice. In today's episode, Kanchan and regular guest Tim Spector help us understand whether there is any scientific evidence to support the health benefits of spices, the easiest way to add spice to our diet, and which ones to choose. https://www.spicespicebaby.com/about/ (Kanchan Koya) is the founder of SpiceSpiceBaby and The Radical Vitality Podcast with a Ph.D. in Biomedicine from Harvard University and training from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. https://www.tim-spector.co.uk (Tim Spector) is a co-founder at ZOE and one of the top 100 most cited scientists in the world. Have you ever pushed down parts of yourself to fit in? I'm guessing we all have. What if you're a person of colour? How does that complexify the story? Today's guest is executive coach Kanchan Prinsloo. You'll hear how Kanchan learned to fit in, because true belonging didn't feel accessible to her – neither in society, nor in her own family. Kanchan learned to “perform” vulnerability, connection and belonging. She created a “second self” that felt acceptable and believable. Maybe then she'd feel enough. But pushing down her truth (and the secret she was hiding) felt too much, and Kanchan realized that true belonging meant exploring who she REALLY was, under the façade of the performer and the “fitter-inner.” Now in her mid-50s, Kanchan is owning her story – much of it for the first time, here on the pod. She's still in the mess of the process, which is precisely why I invited her to speak to us. She offers practical tips for “women of culture” to help navigate their own explorations. Poignant and thought-provoking. Join us. With a mission to help homeless cats, Kanchan Singh founded Crumbs & Whiskers, the first cat cafe in the U.S. While her business was thriving, Kanchan was suffering from depression and anxiety. Through her struggles with mental health, Kanchan wrote a poetry book titled “Dear Me, I Love You: Healing Trauma and Finding Self-Love.” In this powerful episode of Flip Your Script with Kristi Piehl, Kanchan shares her remarkable journey of healing and self acceptance.
In late 2014, Kanchan had it pretty good. She had a corporate job with a cushy paycheck and spent her weekends partying, shopping, and traveling. Amazing, right? You'd think so, but she was really unhappy. Kanchan wasn't doing what she loved, or making a difference, and life felt meaningless. She needed a change. So she asked herself: What have I dreamt of doing for a really long time, but never done? The answer was to travel to Thailand and volunteer at an elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai, started by one of her personal heroes, Lek Chailert. Kanchan love, love, loves animals. And wanted to do something that helped animals. But...she also loved business and believed in the power of businesses to create impact that can't be achieved by traditional charities. https://crumbsandwhiskers.com/our-founder To View This Episode- https://youtu.be/42XdBR3kZUI #CatRescue #Crumbs&Whiskers #WhoKnewInTheMoment? #CatCafe
