EU-vaaleissa äänestetään Euroopan parlamentin uudesta valtatasapainosta ja kannoista. Menestystä on ennakoitu erityisesti laitaoikeiston ryhmille. Juontajana on Helsingin Sanomien toimittaja Anni Keski-Heikkilä. Tapahtuman aikana Tiedekulmassa nähtiin mielenilmauksia, joiden vuoksi keskusteluun tuli pieniä taukoja. EU kertoo itsestään tarinaa demokratian, rauhan, ihmisoikeuksien ja tasa-arvon vaalijana. Samaan aikaan esimerkiksi turvallisuuspolitiikan kysymykset, muuttoliikkeet ja oikeusvaltion ongelmat haastavat EU:n arvoja ja päämääriä. Onko EU:n omakuva edes oikea? Kuka toimii EU:n arvoja vastaan ja kuka puolustaa niitä? Mitkä tarinat hallitsevat tällä hetkellä keskustelua Euroopasta? Tarvitaanko EU:lle jonkinlainen uusi tarina tai idea? EU:n identiteetistä ovat keskustelemassa yleisen historian emeritusprofessori Heikki Mikkeli, tutkijatohtori Markus Ojala ja Eurooppa-tutkimuksen yliopistonlehtori Hanna Tuominen. Episode 1: Reimagining Captain Cook: Pacific Perspectives at the British Museum. Discussed by Laura Lennard, Caz Murray & Vikki Kosmalska.Welcome to series two! We're back, reviewing a free exhibition at the British Museum: Reimagining Captain Cook: Pacific Perspectives.https://www.britishmuseum.org/whats_on/exhibitions/reimagining_captain_cook.aspx It's 250 years since Captain Cook first set sail for the Pacific, but what does his legacy mean to you? Is he a figurehead of enlightenment exploration and progression or an enabler of colonisation and oppression? We focus on the British Museum's display of 14 contemporary artworks by Pacific Island artists, all of which are concerned with Cook and his legacy. These incredible works open up Pacific perspectives and invite us to re-imagine Captain Cook's legacy, raising questions around ritual, possession, (mis)understanding and what it means to be ‘civilised'.Works discussed in detail:Taking Possession: Lono (2017) by Lisa Reihanahttps://www.milfordgalleries.co.nz/dunedin/work/18526-Taking-Possession-Lono-30220-31380-34845 Civilised #12 (2008) by Michael Cook https://ocula.com/art-galleries/this-is-no-fantasy-dianne-tanzer-gallery/artworks/michael-cook/civilised-12/Cook (1981) by Aloi Pilioko Cookie in the Cook Islands (2008) by Michel Tuffery https://www.britishmuseum.org/research/collection_online/collection_object_details/collection_image_gallery.aspx?assetId=841388001&objectId=3294927&partId=1In other Art News, Walthamstow Correspondent, Caz Murray introduces Waltham Forrest as the inaugural London Borough of Culture, and Laura ‘Poirot' Lennard investigates the case of the stollen Michelangelo... Media obscures history. Not intentionally, but the effect of looking at images without a deeper understanding of the context in which the images were created will keep the viewer from knowledge of an historical event. In this FRDH podcast, host Michael Goldfarb looks at how this lack of full understanding is hampering efforts to create a coherent political strategy to oppose President Trump. He explores the seminal research into how media obscures not just history but also other aspects of life by thinkers like: George Gerbner: http://web.asc.upenn.edu/gerbner/Asset.aspx?assetID=2597 https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1997/05/the-man-who-counts-the-killings/376850/ & Neil Postman: https://quote.ucsd.edu/childhood/files/2013/05/postman-amusing.pdf He also writes about the television programs that shaped the Vietnam generation, like Beulah: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQ2l_KTDcHU This essay on how media obscures our undertanding of history is inspired by Ken Burns series "The Vietnam War." Goldfarb asks, Why American society today feels like it is coming apart at the seams because when watching Burns documentary you realize there is no comparison between the objective reality of the Vietnam era and now. The reality then: half a million troops in combat deployment, riots in American cities every summer with hundreds killed, major political assassinations as a regular feature of national life. Reality today: a sense of panic that is comparable to the Vietnam era but not based in anything like the same scale of trauma.

A year ago the British Humanist Association launched the "Atheist Bus Campaign" declaring "There is probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life". Would we enjoy life and be less worried without belief in God in modern Britain? Where do humanist values come from? What about the role of faith in school and society? Their latest poster campaign urges that children should not be "labelled" with a faith position. This paper offers a close reading of the grammar of the gaze offered in eighteenth-century prints that depict crowds of people looking at the window displays of London’s many print shops. It asks how far we can read them as accurate records of spectatorial practice, and what we can learn from the ways in which they advertise and project both their own public and their own position within the visual economy of the street in the Georgian city.
