Welcome to The kbbreview Podcast, your host is Andy Davies and this is Episode Eight of Season 14. We're heading into the long Easter weekend of course, which will be a nice break before the madness of next begins as we jet off to Blackpool for the kbbreview Retail & Design Awards next Thursday. And by 'jet off' I mean the train. You don't usually have to change at Preston if you're in a jet. This episode is one of those where we pose one simple question to some retailers - how's business? These are always some of our most listened to episodes, and it's not hard to see why, the kbb market is flat at best, no one knows when that will change and, oh yes, the rest of the world seems to have genuinely gone mad.So, Andy's kbbreview colleague George Dean went off to the annual MHK Conference in Berlin a couple of weeks ago and managed to catch a few UK retailers. What's fascinating about this one, as you'll hear, is that our retailers are answering that question really by talking about how they're changing, adapting, trying new things and being pretty proactive, rather than complaining about the state of the market. It's actually great to hear and, to us anyway, that's a real sign that the independent market can do a lot to grab hold of the market and shake it, rather than waiting to be shook. John "Sinx" Sinclair is an entrepreneur and co-founder of Ustwo, a globally renowned digital product studio celebrated for its cutting-edge work in design, technology, and innovation. Founded in 2004 alongside childhood friend Matt Miller (Mills), they started working together to explore and build digital products when they were just starting to become a thing.Ustwo grew rapidly, initially specialising in mobile design, and is now celebrated for its mix of client services, self-developed intellectual property, and joint ventures. Over two decades they have built a culture of trust, collaboration and honesty where everyone can inspire each other to bring out their most creative and considered thinking. They value diversity and inclusion, believing we work better when every individual brings their perspective to the table. An award winning agency, Ustwo's accolades include a BAFTA for the cultural phenomenon ‘Monument Valley' (launched on the stage of Apple's WDWC) and were recognised at the Fast Company Innovation by Design Awards. A true advocate for innovation and collaboration, Sinx and Mills made a groundbreaking decision in April 2022 to transfer the majority ownership of Ustwo to its employees under an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). This move ensured that 62% of the company is owned by its current and future employees, reinforcing Ustwo's independence, preserving its values, and unlocking entrepreneurial potential across the organisation. Ustwo employees, or "partners," now share a stake in the company's success and are represented on the board, driving its future collectively. This Episode CoversHow Sinx transitioned from being a hands-on designer to a leadership role, implementing a leadership team, and eventually stepping away from day-to-day operations while maintaining a guiding presence. The transition of UsTwo into an Employee Ownership Trust model, how the model works, its implications for the company, and the pros and cons, including its impact on recruitment, client relationships, and the company's independence.Navigating the ups and downs of running a creative business, especially during uncertain economic times, the importance of staying engaged, adapting to market trends, and building strategies for sustainability. The importance of planning for leadership transitions and career progression to ensure continuity and growth.Sinx desire to leave a lasting legacy through UsTwo, focusing on producing impactful work, nurturing people, and proving the viability of the EOT model in creative businesses.Clarifying common misconceptions, such as the belief that employees run the company outright, and explaining the role of the trust and board in governance.LinksWebsite: UstwoSocial media: LinkedIn

Welcome to The kbbreview Podcast, this is Episode Six of Season 14 and your host is managing editor Andy Davies.Today we're looking at an area that gets to the heart of what good design is all about.Understanding and interpreting the needs of those that are going to use the kitchen or bathroom every day is a vital part of any brief - and that includes not just factoring in extended family and friends but also future-proofing for the potential needs to come. We've talked a lot about multi-generational design in the context of physicality before on the show, but today we're going to look at how usable kitchens and bathroom are vital for those with cognitive impairments too - in particular dementia.Jo Jeyes is our guest today and she's a designer specialising in, amongst other things, dementia-friendly design so we're going to find out what that means, the role of good kbb design in maintaining independence and dignity, how to broach and discuss this with clients and, of course, lots of actual practical tips. This is so interesting and really underpins the power of good design in making people's lives better.A quick reminder that the kbbreview Retail & Design Awards are in the iconic Blackpool Tower Ballroom on Thursday, April 24 and we are officially 100% sold out. However, when you have that many people there is always a chance some cancellations do happen, so, we are running a waiting list. Welcome to The kbbreview Podcast, your host is Andy Davies and this is Episode 5 of Season 14 - which means we're officially halfway through the series. This week we're delving into a subject that, slowly but surely, is becoming more common - freelance KBB designers. They're not retailers in the classic definition of the word, they don't have showrooms, but they will design kitchens or bathrooms for their clients - and those clients could be consumers, developers, interior design, architects or, indeed, time-poor KBB retailers. So why go freelance? How does it work? Who are the customers and where do they find them? How do relationships with suppliers work? And with so many KBB retailers wishing they could charge for designs, how do they sell the service? This is a really insightful conversation with three top designers already doing it - Darren Morgan, Alina Tacutanu and Anna Rock and if you run a showroom, you really need to hear their views.A quick reminder that the kbbreview Retail & Design Awards are in the iconic Blackpool Tower Ballroom on Thursday, April 24 and we are officially 100% sold out. Retained to design some of the most magnificent homes in the world, Errol Dejager is an artist as much as he is a strategist. As the founding principal of Dejager Design, a full-service interior design firm with offices in Newport Beach and Beverly Hills, he brings his more than 30 years of experience to his craft. Working with world-renowned architects and builders, his specialty is interior architecture and design in the luxury, high-end residential market. He is currently developing projects in Los Angeles, Orange County, and Miami that range from 4,500 to 105,000 square feet. Dejager's personable and creative approach has awarded him many unique opportunities to develop and build a portfolio of eclectic, elegant, holistic design work. He also prioritizes integrating technology into the design process and the home. Giving his clients the opportunity to literally walk through their homes through the design process through high-end rendering, Dejager seeks to take the fear out of decision making.  Though creating beautiful interior spaces is his core passion, Dejager's background in architecture, landscape design, and construction has given him a unique understanding of the entire process and has allowed him to be a valued team member on a luxury project. Ultimately, he is inspired by the continual expansion of technologies and collaborations he enjoys with clients, leading architects, designers and contractors.     We invite you to SUBSCRIBE! In episode 106, Erin shares how conversations have shaped their brand and how she turns those insights into empathetic action. It was after decades in the industry at big-name brands like Nike, Converse, and Nordstrom that Erin and her co-founder realized just how hard it is for plus-size women to find clothes that fit after an elevator conversation with a co-worker. That conversation sparked others that began Erin and Yi's entrepreneurial journey as the founders of See ROSE Go. Accomplished Chief Merchandising Officer with over 20 years of industry experience leading innovative strategies across fashion and retail, Erin's career began as a Nordstrom buyer. It was with Nordstrom that Erin discovered her passion for enhancing the customer experience, through empathy and an in-depth understanding of the customer's point of view. Nike Inc. recruited Erin to lead an Outlet division for Men's, Women's, and Kid's Apparel and Accessories. She was quickly promoted to direct Men's Apparel Merchandising for the Asia Pacific / China region. More recently, she drove significant growth in women's apparel, optimizing product lines and achieving exceptional GM% as the Global Women's Merchandising Director. In these roles, Erin remained consumer-centric, leading insight strategy and product creation to enhance the overall customer experience through superior products. In 2018, Erin co-founded See ROSE Go, a plus-size fashion brand with an ethos in intentional design, innovation, and mindful sustainability. Leading merchandising strategy, omni-channel distribution, and business development, Erin also successfully secured VC funding as a new founder with a newborn at home. In 2021, See ROSE Go received an honorable mention in Fast Company's Innovation by Design Awards for the proprietary tech/lifestyle fabric, CoolROSE™. In 2023 Erin received a U.S. Patent for this fabric. CoolROSE™ was invented as a direct response to issues women deal with but seldom speak about - body heat, sweat, and pilling from friction between body parts. Erin and See ROSE Go have been recognized by Forbes, CBS Money, and WWD for challenging industry norms. She was recently featured with her Co-Founder, Yi Zhou, in Authority Magazine as female disruptors shaking up their industry. It is the See ROSE Go mission to see women embrace their power and “go”. To Erin, style isn't just how a woman looks, it is how she moves and feels and the impact she makes while wearing See ROSE Go. This month, Mary had the opportunity to meet with artist and scholar, Neal Aronowitz. They spoke in Neal's studio in Portland, Oregon - a place where he works with concrete and wood, aluminum, marble, glass and electricity. Neal applies his artistic sensibilities to furniture design - specifically consoles, coffee tables and light fixtures. His style is profoundly affected by his kinship with the natural world. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Neal came to know wild nature in adventures his family would take into the woodlands and mountains of New York State. He studied art and architecture at City University of NY and Massachusetts College of Art exploring the disciplines of metalwork, glassmaking, woodworking, ceramics, photography, and multimedia sculpture. Then, to keep his young family cared for, he developed a construction business. All along, however, he remained powerfully interested and invested in the plant world - expressing his devotion through urban gardens of fruit and vegetables - and gardens of water. Now he's essentially finished with construction and spends his time pursuing his life's love of artistic expression in design. In the short time he's been giving the majority of his attention to this work, he's received great acclaim, including being the subject of an award winning documentary, HOW TO BEND CONCRETE IN 108 EASY STEPS. He's been featured in Interiors Magazine, Luxe, Spaces, Elle, and Kaza - a magazine in Sao Paulo. He won the 2017 Gray Award and was named Best of the Year in 2018 by Interior Design. He was also recognized by Artisan Design and was a finalist in the 2024 NYC by Design Awards. In this episode Neal shares the story of his artistic pursuits and then weaves that tale directly into ways that we can all be part of climate repair. You can learn more about Neal and see examples of his designs by visiting his website @nealaronowitz.com. And, in case you missed the link above, here's access to the documentary, HOW TO BEND CONCRETE IN 108 EASY STEPS. For those who are interested, we asked Neal for his recommendations on what to read to learn more about Vedanta and include those with other resources he mentioned during our conversation. We list those below.Throughout our time Neal emphasized how nothing happens separate from the physical world - from nature, its atomic and subatomic activity and order. The whole world is here and in relationship with each and all. As Neal reminds us, we're in good company. Welcome to The kbbreview Podcast, your host is Andy Davies and this is Episode Nine of Season 13.Today we're delving back into the mysteries of the brain with another look at the psychology of you and your clients and, in particular, the effect of unconscious bias on how you view them and they view you.Does the car they drive, the clothes they wear or the haircut they have mean that you form opinions on them the moment they come through the showroom door?Or, more worryingly, is the same true for their gender, race or age too?The answer, according to our guest - retail psychology expert Phillip Adcock - is an uncomfortable yes to all of them no matter what you might say. Hundreds of thousands of years of evolution have made you instantly judge everyone you meet and these unconscious prejudices are constantly battling with your conscious desire to treat everyone the same. His view is that the more you're aware of how people's unconscious minds work - both yours and your clients - the more successful you can be in selling your services. And that could mean accepting some uncomfortable truths and actively consciously choosing to go against them. And don't forget that entries close for the kbbreview Retail & Design Awards 2025 on November 14. Simon shares his critical views on the relevance and necessity of such accolades in the industry, outlining how awards can sometimes compromise the integrity of the work and may not ultimately benefit design agencies. The conversation touches on the cost implications and the often-overlooked downside of getting trapped in a cycle of constantly chasing awards. Simon's punk-rock ethos and commitment to authentic, disruptive design shine throughout the discussion, challenging the conventional wisdom around what it means to be successful in the design world. Simon highlights the hefty financial burden of entering design awards and questions their true value to clients. He explains that his agency's growth and reputation have been built on delivering results rather than chasing recognition through awards. Simon emphasizes that clients prioritize results such as increased sales and brand impact over industry accolades. With a background that includes leading a skate brand funded by Joey Ramone, Simon blends his punk roots with his professional journey to foster a unique and rebellious approach at Robot Food, encouraging brands to stand out rather than conform. Key Takeaways: The Cost of Awards: Design awards come with significant entry fees and additional costs if you win, which can be a heavy burden for startups. Client Priorities: Clients are more interested in tangible business results rather than whether an agency has won awards. Disruptive Design: Success in design comes from questioning the norm and creating emotionally and visually disruptive work. Agency Culture: A rebellious, questioning attitude within an agency can foster innovation and lead to standout work. Alternative Recognition: Rather than seeking awards, Simon advocates for cutting through the noise by delivering exceptional client outcomes. Dive into the full episode to explore these insights and more, as Simon Forster shares his candid perspectives on the design industry, the true value of awards, and the importance of staying disruptive.
