Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Koan: divining alien datastructures from RAM activations, published by Tsvi Benson-Tilsen on April 5, 2024 on The AI Alignment Forum. [Metadata: crossposted from https://tsvibt.blogspot.com/2024/04/koan-divining-alien-datastructures-from.html.] Exploring the ruins of an alien civilization, you find what appears to be a working computer - - it's made of plastic and metal, wires connect it to various devices, and you see arrays of capacitors that maintain charged or uncharged states and that sometimes rapidly toggle in response to voltages from connected wires. You can tell that the presumptive RAM is activating in complex but structured patterns, but you don't know their meanings. What strategies can you use to come to understand what the underlying order is, what algorithm the computer is running, that explains the pattern of RAM activations? Thanks to Joss Oliver (SPAR) for entertaining a version of this koan. Many of B's ideas come from Joss. Real data about minds Red: If we want to understand how minds work, the only source of real data is our own thinking, starting from the language in which we think. Blue: That doesn't seem right. A big alternative source of data is neuroscience. We can directly observe the brain - - electrical activations of neurons, the flow of blood, the anatomical structure, the distribution of chemicals - - and we can correlate that with behavior. Surely that also tells us about how minds work? Red: I mostly deny this. To clarify: I deny that neuroscience is a good way to gain a deep understanding of the core structure of mind and thought. It's not a good way to gain the concepts that we lack. Blue: Why do you think this? It seems straightforward to expect that science should work on brains, just like it works on anything else. If we study the visible effects of the phenomenon, think of hypotheses to explain those visible effects, and test those hypotheses to find the ones that are true, then we'll find our way towards more and more predictive hypotheses. R: That process of investigation would of course work in the very long run. My claim is: that process of investigation is basically trying to solve a problem that's different from the problem of understanding the core structure of mind. That investigation would eventually work anyway, but mostly as a side-effect. As a rough analogy: if you study soccer in great detail, with a very high standard for predictive accuracy, you'll eventually be forced to understand quantum mechanics; but that's really a side-effect, and it doesn't mean quantum mechanics is very related to soccer or vice versa, and there's much faster ways of investigating quantum mechanics. As another, closer analogy: if you study a calculator in great detail, and you ask the right sort of questions, then you'll eventually be led to understand addition, because addition is in some sense a good explanation for why the calculator is the way that it is; but you really have to be asking the right questions, and you could build a highly detailed physics simulation that accurately predicts the intervention-observation behavior of the calculator as a physical object without understanding addition conceptually (well, aside from needing to understand addition for purposes of coding a simulator). B: What I'm hearing is: There are different domains, like QM and soccer, or electrons in wires vs. the concepts of addition. And if you want to understand one domain, you should try to study it directly. Is that about right? R: Yeah, that's an ok summary. B: Just ok? R: Your summary talks about where we start our investigation. I'd also want to emphasize the directional pull on our investigation that comes from the questions we're asking. B: I see. I don't think this really applies to neuroscience and minds, though. Like, ok, what we really wa...

Just saying. A: What did you say?How dare you! 说说而已...All I'm saying... All I'm saying is I think the end part could have been a little shorter. We should do our best, that's all I'm saying. Of course, it goes without saying that you'll be paid for the extra hours you work. She's very unpredictable, so there's no saying how she'll react to the news. I'm not saying..., I just... I'm not saying it was your fault. I just think you could have checked. I'm not saying..., but... I'm not saying it's perfect, but it's pretty close.

Sign Up For MSOPI Here: https://bit.ly/msopi-nomad KEY TAKEAWAYS There is creativity, flexibility and stability with property I started out purchasing and creatively renovating wrecks of houses each time doubling up my investment through the market and adding value. A lot of it was creativity and making very individual houses. For flipping there are 2 specific markets – the cookie-cutter ‘rinse and repeat' putting in the same things every time, this is a mass-market approach. Bespoke flipping is about a very individualised approach it's a thing of love but is adored by the British market You need to understand you are retailing with houses. The cookie-cutter approach is a good starting strategy. The whole atmosphere and prestige are key requirements for the bespoke strategy. The data is really important you have to know what's going on in your area. The critical thing is finding the property discounted. Buying discounted means you have a safety margin Cities and towns are better because there is more fluidity with people, property and options. Flipping can be effective in a much wider way – you can add value through joint venturing and flipping commercial properties and land. It's important to communicate and discuss all options and risks with JV partners. Flipping is about generating lump sums of cash that can then be used to fund other things.   BEST MOMENTS ‘It's about building relationships' ‘There is always a plan B so a property only ever has 8 weeks exposure on the market before it moves to a rental' ‘I've always viewed flipping as a retailing houses' ‘You must never refurbish for yourself when you are flipping don't spend on anything you don't need to'    VALUABLE RESOURCES The Property Nomads Website https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-property-nomads-podcast/id1440016017 The Property Nomads - Stitcher Buy To Let: How To Get Started – By Rob Smallbone (Amazon)  The Good Property Company Susannah Cole Linkedin   ABOUT THE GUEST Susannah Cole Susannah is. It is possible to succeed even with very little money starting out. It only took Susannah 3 ½ years to become a property millionaire, and in her first 3 months as a deal packager, she made £12k as a kitchen table start-up with a phone, a kettle and computer. Susannah went on to source, buy or let out more than 200 properties with a value of £45million and an agreed purchase price of £30million (before refurb). “加油”的英语不是“fighting"也不是“come on"更加不是中式英语 "add oil"。今天我们来学习英语里正确的加油说法。边听录音边学习吧!最万用的是:Good luck!Best of luck!没错,就这么简单。英语“祝你好运”连带有“加油”的意思;These are the most general phrases that you can use to encourage someone: 这两句是最常用的鼓励人的句子;They can be used for a wide range of contexts: 不管什么场景,包括考试、面试、开始人生新阶段、这两句基本都适用;用“Go"来加油Go get them;Go get the best of them;Go beat them这三个说法都很常用;对于没有直接对手的考验,可以用:Go for it:加油、努力去做女生加油美国主持天后Oprah Winfrey超爱用这句;女性之间互相加油、或者男性给女性加油都可以;努力再努力Give it your 110%尽你110%的努力、最大限度的努力;怎么用?这句话在鼓励之中有要求,通常用在觉得对方需要尽最大努力或还有提升空间的情况下;鼓励正在犹豫、面临重大选择的朋友A: Should I start my own business? 我该自己创业吗?B: Just do it!/ You can do it! 放手去做、放手一搏!坚持住!挺住!Hang in there: 坚持住、挺住、会好起来的怎么用?A: This is so hard. I can't do it. 好艰难啊,我大概不行。B: Hang in there. 坚持住、挺住。加油不是“ fighting",但是可以说"keep fighting",关键是要加"keep"光说"fighting"外国人是听不懂的;更多“keep”Keep up the good work:继续加油、保持好表现Let's keep it up: 我们一起加油!这两句既是鼓励,也是认可;

So much they have to think about getting from A to B, moving the whole wedding party around that kind of things. It’s a huge expense. And in these days, when we’ve got to think about the environment and you know the kind of things that... What would we rather spend our money on? Do we rather spend it on luxury limousines? Or do we want to maybe spend it on things for the new house or something like that? Then you think it yourself, I KNOW! Let’s have the wedding in the subway. Good idea or bad idea, I don’t know.N: Well, I have to justify for this specific couple. Well, in their case, they didn’t actually have the wedding in the subway. They are just using subway as a transportation choice. So they decided to go from home to the hotel using the subway, but wearing traditional Chinese wedding customs. And they walked into the subway station with their bridesmaid and best-man. And actually it’s very sweet, cuz the bridegroom checked the regulation beforehand to make sure that they didn’t violate any rules. And they set out at 8am Saturday to avoid disturbing traffic peak hours, keeping the ride low key without any special music or arrangements during the trip. So I believe it’s a cute and sweet idea and they didn’t disturb anyone. They kind of spread their joy and they have made their contribution to promoting a green idea of living.R: I want to talk about how Bob wants to spread joy with the cat in the subway as he was referencing... I do believe? I don’t know. But you know, looking at this, I mean I don’t think we can comfortably say nobody was a little annoyed. Someone is gonna have to take the cab, not the cab, the subway. Because the cabs are maybe a little more expensive if you are cab hailing, maybe taking the subway on a Saturday. So in which case, if you’re taking the subway in the morning, for whatever reason, on a Saturday someone is, at 8am, then do you think this would annoy you? I seem to be under the impression anyone waking up at 8am on a Saturday is grouchy. Right, I would be, I would be grouchy and then I see these people having a great time, getting married... And I am single, I’m doing something at 8am in the morning. B: Oh, he’s bitter.R: And I’m like rub it in my face, could you just take your taxi with your tinted windows, So I don’t even have to see it. Bob.B: Just calm down. R: You’re gonna on the side with me Bob?B: No, not in the slightest. So do you think it’s a good idea or not a good idea before I go onto cats?R: Oh, God.N: I think it’s a good idea for them. Because they are not taking a limo. They are taking the subway. And I feel like they are not really disturbing anyone. And also a lot of netizens have responded, saying that renting a limo is not that important and their way of doing this is environmental-friendly. And it’s possibly faster concerning Beijing’s traffic conditions. So I’m agree with them doing it.B: Do you know, I think it depends on which subway line that this was going to happen on. If it’s subway Line1, then I reckon that there’s a lot of grumpy people. R: Yeah, me.B: You, for example. Sitting there, being grumpy and saying go get married somewhere else.R: Bring cats.B: But on some lines, I reckoned, on Line6. This would be fine. Everything is a bit more chilled on Line6.R: I don’t take Line6 often, so I can’t say. But definitely on Line1...B: And we’re talking about Beijing Subway here?R: Yes, definitely on Line1. I would be a little bit grumpy. Niu Honglin?N: Yeah, for me, as long as you are happily married, you will spend your day with your loved ones, friends and relatives. You can do whatever you want as long as you are not bothering anyone, you have my bless.B: But use cats.R: How did cats ever get into this? You got to explain yourself here.B: Cuz everybody loves cats.R: That’s not true. Some people love dogs.B: Or dogs. Okay, I think more people like cats. But if you’re going to do something which is really sort of... When it comes to society like getting in people’s way. Then you just would think, okay I gotta do something to make people feel happy, in which case, take a cat with you. And then, everybody would be happy. No, you didn’t get away with more. I have done it myself.R: See, this is where it starts. This is what I’m worried about guys. And I want your opinions. I starts with weddings. But then it ends up being with Bob with cats on the subway. And who knows how many cats Bob will bring with him on the subway?B: I’m not a crazy cat-man. I’m not gonna bring you like 10 cats or something like that.N: Well, let me bring the subject a little more to human wedding instead of cat wedding. For those of you who really want some creative ideas. You can also take some water ways, you can also take a bike and also a horse might be a nice choice. For those of you who want to have some adventure, you can get married on an airlift. And also you can rent a party bus to transport all your guests, relatives and friends. So whatever you want to do, just be happy and creative.R: Guys, gotta know, quick closing statements, cute or annoying? What do you think Bob?B: I think, annoying on Line1 and probably quite entertaining on Line5.R: Oh my God.N: Cute and happy and full of pink bubbles.B: And cats.R: Or maybe cats. That could definitely just be you, Bob, on this one.

Brad Post, Create the Movement: Hello. This is Brad Post, and I am with my co-host, Josh Rich. Josh Rich, Create the Movement: Good morning everyone. B: We are continuing our Tuesday Marketing Tips. Right? J: Yes, sir. B: So, how are you doing, Josh? J: Doing well, Brad. How are you? B: I’m doing well. J: Excellent. So, today, we’re going to be talking about, really, two main topics. Using link-building software. And, then, we’re going to talk about, kind of, what to do if you’re going to hire a company to build links for you. It’s a little different. So, the first one is kind of the DIY version. It’s just buying some software, and paying for links yourself. Versus, just paying someone else to do it. B: Okay. J: So, there’s a couple of things, if you’re going to do it yourself, there’s some really good tools you can use. For one, whenever you start, you need to have some sort of a link management system. B: Okay. J: Because if you’re going to be emailing bloggers and signing up for directory listings you need to make sure that you stay organized. Otherwise, you’re just going to be all over the place, and you’re not going to figure out what you have already done, and you’ll end up doing double work. B: Just like an Excel spreadsheet? J: Yeah. That’s kind of like the basic version. You use an excel spreadsheet. Or, you can just actually sign up for some paid-link building software. That’s a little bit better because it will give some analytics on it. So, the first one you can use is, is what we use, is Raven Tools. B: Okay. J: That will tell you, kind of like, what status you’re at. And it will give you some analytics, like I said, on the link, to let you know what the domain authority is. To just let you know if it’s worth pursuing, or not. B: Okay, perfect. J: Another site you can use, it won’t necessarily manage link, but if you’re just curious if it’s a good link worth pursuing or not, is SpyFu. And it will just give you some readouts on how much traffic they get, what the domain authority is, and how much people trust that link. B: Okay. J: And then there’s another software you can use to kind of just check for new prospects. To just kind of give you some ideas. And it’s called Ontolo. O-N-T-O-L-O. Not sure if I’m saying that right, or not. Like I said, that will just kind of give you some ideas where to look for links. And, then, once you kind of figured out what you want to do. You can use a software called Word Tracker. And that B: Word Tracker? J: Yeah, Word Tracker. And that will just kind of give you ideas on how to proposition the websites. On how to go about, like just, sending the initial email to try to get your link on their site. How to just make the “ask” basically. B: Okay. J: So, those are all, you know, really good softwares you can use. And, so, another way to do this too, is just flat-out buying links. And, today, that’s probably something you’re just going to have to do if you’re going to do backlinking. Unfortunately, just people know about SEO now, so they’re going to charge you for it. So, there’s a couple of things you should be aware of. A couple of ways you should go about that. First, of all, one good idea to do, is to look up to see if your competitors are using paid links. And again, you can use SpyFu for that. And if you’re paid links, then you can probably get away with not doing it too. Especially, if you’re already ranking higher than them. But, you know, if you have competitors that are just 10 links ahead of you, and they’ve got tons of paid links, that’s probably why they’re ahead of you. B: And you use SpyFu, and also, Open Site Explorer? J: Yep. Yeah. You can use both of those to figure out kind of what your competition is doing. And that’s really a good place to start. So, that way you can at least know if you’re keeping up with the “Jonses.” B: Okay. The paid links, for example, we work with a lot of attorneys. And so, the FindLaw directory is a pai...
