Sense making in times of upheaval such as the social unrest and BlackLivesMatter protests of the past week is hard. I believe that long form, thoughtful conversations can help bring forth nuance and ground us in reality better than fragmented and hyped social media. Please enjoy this conversation about race, oppression and history with Rhamis Kent. Kent is a permaculturist based in Cornwall, UK. He grew up in the United States, and as a black man, has come to a nuanced understanding of racism and its perpetuation. This conversation explores the ways in which whiteness is a delusion based on a societal game of musical chairs, of which we've written the rules so that black people are disproportionately destined to lose. Another theme is the way in which, as Van Jones has recently called to attention, liberals and moderates are often those that undermine the Movement for Black Lives the most, in the ways that, when under pressure, they throw their black "allies" under the bus. Rhamis is well-read, and referenced a number of resources that may interest those interested in exploring this subject further. • "Permaculture and Slavery: A System Analysis" by Rhamis Kent: https://www.permaculturenews.org/2013/03/11/permaculture-and-slavery-a-system-analysis/ • Brittish compensation to slave holders: https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20200205-how-britain-is-facing-up-to-its-secret-slavery-history • "The Many-Headed Hydra: Sailors, Slaves, Commoners, and the Hidden History of the Revolutionary Atlantic" by Marcus Redkier and Peter Linebaugh: https://bookshop.org/books/the-many-headed-hydra-sailors-slaves-commoners-and-the-hidden-history-of-the-revolutionary-atlantic/9780807033173 • Bacon's Rebellion (1676-1677): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacon%27s_Rebellion • Van Jones on the liberal threat: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/van-jones-a-white-liberal-hillary-clinton-supporter-can-pose-a-greater-threat-to-black-americans-than-the-kkk/ar-BB14MgOZ • "Nothing is True and Everything is Possible: The Surrealist Heart of New Russia" by Peter Pomerantsev: https://bookshop.org/books/nothing-is-true-and-everything-is-possible-the-surreal-heart-of-the-new-russia/9781610396004
Best wishes to everyone dealing with pandemic bs. Full play text here: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/27273/27273-h/widow.html Grace, Alex, and Matt are back with another Aphra Behn work, this time her posthumously performed 1689 play "The Widow Ranter, or, the History of Bacon in Virginia." We discuss her role as a tory propagandist and as a spy rewriting recent history to glorify the heroic individual. The righteous Levellers and "delegating" the power of the people. Behn makes Bacon an Indian lover and not hater. Semernia and Cockacoeske. Bacon not a populist. The drunk colonial judiciary. Defending inheritances you recognize as unjust. The Widow Ranter as a feminist libertine ideal. Behn's lasting fidelity to hierarchy. Sources: Linebaugh, Peter, and Marcus Rediker. 2000. How memory-holed is Bacon's Rebellion? The false promise of promotional literature and the headright system. Economic anxiety and indian hating. Trade disputes, theft, jurisdiction, and the start of the rebellion. Bacon seeing no difference between friend and enemy indians. The spectre of Cromwell. George Washington's great grandfather: war criminal. Nathaniel Bacon, failson, scammer, world-traveler. Defense spending boondoggles and paying your taxes in tobacco. Selling guns to indians. Bacon's alliance/battle with Posseclay and the Occaneechees. Who's side is Cook on? Bacon uses loyalist women as a human shield, is more "Blue Lives Matter" than DSA. Bacon's bloody flux and his surviving rebellion. The merchant, Captain Grantham's, dirty trick. @Alecks_Guns, @MattLech @LitHangover References: Rice, James D. 2012. After the tumultuous ending of that storied year, it was originally released on April Fool's Day 2017 by a label that has since dissolved. In a recent interview for Ariel Wang's Sub Rosa podcast the legendary kool-aid test that accompanied its release came up, and the memory drove me to unearth it from the vaults and offer it up to the internet at large. We'll explore the philosophy, strategy, and tactics that Marxist and postmodern nihilists use to program "Social Justice Warriors," turning otherwise thoughtful, critically-minded individuals into armies of extreme leftist NPCs. Each week, we'll talk about a different aspect of "social justice" culture, drawing both from Keri's personal experience as well as current events.
Last time, we talked about the many reasons Virginia colonists were frustrated by the 1670s, including the price of tobacco, taxation, and disparities between the richest colonists and everyone else. But another issue actually sparked the rebellion. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers

Few contemporary or historical accounts of Bacon’s rebellion agree in every particular about the movement’s motivations and outcomes. For the Jacksonian Democrat, George Bancroft, Virginians had enjoyed free government for three generations on the edge of the wilderness. For Bancroft and nationalist historians, this was the prelude to the American Revolution—it was the people seizing their government, its policy-making apparatus, and its legitimacy so that the popular interest might once again govern Virginia. However, Twentieth-century historians with a more global perspective on British imperial activity recognized Bacon’s Rebellion as a racialized conflict against the Indians which transformed into a vehicle for the expression of popular discontent. In 1675 an argument about lack of payment between a colonist and the Doeg Indians sets a series of events in motion that launches Bacon's Rebellion. Join us for the thrilling conclusion of our visit to one of the sites of Bacon's Rebellion, the first significant uprising in the British North American colonies. Will Nathaniel Bacon shoot Governor Berkeley? How will the Rebellion end?? What will happen to Bacon himself??? Tune in and find out!
Ever heard of Bacon's Castle? No? How about Bacon's Rebellion? Here's a hint: 1676. Here's another hint: it was the first major rebellion against the British Crown in North America. Ring any bells? Kinda? Sorta? Well, Stewart had also kinda, sorta known about Bacon's Rebellion when he ran into two fine ladies from a wonderful group called Preservation Virginia, Jennifer Hurst-Wender and Joanna Braswell. Jen and Joanna recently took Stewart on a tour of Bacon's Castle that was so enlightening that we couldn't cram the whole interview into a single episode. So here's our first installment. We know you'll enjoy it.
Failed Revolutions continue's with Bacon's Rebellion, the most important Pre-Colonial event to have almost no information about. See how a screwball story of people killing the wrong Indian Tribe and pissing contest between in-laws, becomes one of the great metaphors and benchmarks of America's culture for the next several hundred years.
Please join us Sunday, May 25, 2014 as we welcome Dr. Jeffery B. Perry to Black FreeThinkers. We will discuss Hubert Henry Harrison who is considered the Black Socrates. Harrison is also know for his radical humanism, oratorical skills, and influence. "The Invention of the White Race" by Theodore W. Allen, especially Vol. II: "The Origin of Racial Oppression in Anglo-America"."When the first Africans arrived in Virginia in 1619, there were no 'white' people there; nor, according to the colonial records, would there be for another sixty years." Theodore W. Allen Theodore W. Allen's "The Invention of the White Race," with its focus on racial oppression and social control, is one of the twentieth-century's major contributions to historical understanding. This two-volume classic (Vol. 1: "Racial Oppression and Social Control" and Vol. 2: "The Origin of Racial Oppression in Anglo-America") details how the "white race" was invented as a ruling-class social control formation and a system of racial oppression was imposed in response to labor solidarity in the wake of Bacon's Rebellion (1676-77), how the "white race" was created and maintained through "white race" privileges conferred on laboring class European-Americans relative to African-Americans, how these privileges were not in the interest of African-Americans or laboring class European-Americans, and how the "white race" has been the principal historic guarantor of ruling-class domination in America.
This is my social studies project. Basically, it's a more elaborate (and historically accurate) version of my Bacon's Rebellion animation.
