In a country like Austria, with a functioning healthcare system and good public infrastructure, one might think that social justice is already well advanced. But Susanne Hamscha takes a more nuanced view: “We see people in our society who have a harder time, who are less privileged – whether in terms of access to education or the labor market. Only when opportunities are truly distributed fairly can we speak of a fair society.“ This is not just a geographical issue, such as Europe, but also concerns structural inequalities within our society. Those who only look at diversity superficially often overlook the deeper causes of inequality – and thus ignore enormous potential. When people talk about sustainability, many initially think of ecology. But without social sustainability, any environmental strategy remains incomplete. After all, only a society in which people can live healthy, safe lives with equal rights is sustainable in the long term. Companies have an enormous influence on who gets opportunities, who can advance, and who is heard. They decide on working conditions, development opportunities, and corporate culture. Studies show that social sustainability pays off: a diverse and inclusive work environment can substantially contribute to success and profitability as many studies proof. However, this does not happen overnight—since this work is a marathon, not a sprint.“You always have diversity in companies. How can you use this diversity as a resource in order to do whatever it is you're doing a little bit better?”– Susanne Hamscha, Managing Partner at factor-D Diversity ConsultingBased on her work with numerous companies, Susanne Hamscha has derived three key recommendations:Focus on inclusion: Instead of just counting diversity, you should create a culture where everyone feels welcome and heard.Holistic view: Creating equal opportunities isn't just about HR, but also product development, communication, and leadership.Long-term thinking: The biggest mistake is to put the issue on the back burner in times of crisis. That's precisely when diversity can be part of the solution.Listen now and learn more about social sustainability in a corporate context!
Various kind of philosophical considerations have been offered in favor of democracy. By some accounts, democracy realizes some intrinsic value, such as equality or collective autonomy. According to other views, democracy's value is more instrumental: it tends to produce or promote certain social goods like stability, prosperity, and peace. However, a longstanding alternative tradition locates democracy's value in its capacity to make social and moral progress. Here, the idea isn't so much that democracy produces an already-identified social good, but rather that democracy fosters a kind of social and moral discovery. In Experiments in Living Together: How Democracy Drives Social Progress (Oxford UP, 2024), Michael Fuerstein draws on normative and empirical considerations in proposing a systematic account of democracy's capacity to foster progress. In 2015, the world pledged to achieve gender equality by 2030 as part of the U.N.'s Sustainable Development Goals. Nearly a decade later, it's clear the target won't be met, with the World Economic Forum estimating gender parity is still 131 years away. While some progress has been made, particularly in Europe and North America, much of the Global South lags behind—though countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Singapore, and Chile are notable exceptions. Achieving real change demands a fundamental shift in thinking and action. That's why we invited Zubaida Bai, CEO of the Grameen Foundation, to join us on New Thinking for a New World. She believes gender equality is not only essential but achievable—if we focus on bold, systemic change.
The Finnish capital, Helsinki, was ranked number one in the latest Global Destination Sustainability (GDS) Index, which was published on 16 October 2024. The GDS Index measures the sustainability of travel destinations in four different categories using more than 70 indicators. The comparison includes more than a hundred cities throughout the world that have invested in sustainability. Helsinki has performed well in the GDS Index in the past: in 2023, ranking fourth. "Being named the world's most sustainable travel destination is proof of the long-term work that has been done in Helsinki. We are developing and growing tourism sustainably together with tourism operators and local residents. The first place we have now achieved indicates that we are on the right path," said Juhana Vartiainen, Mayor of Helsinki. Visitors appreciate sustainable destinations and services The Global Destination Sustainability (GDS) Index evaluates sustainability across four key areas: Destination Management, Supplier Performance, Environmental Performance, and Social Performance. Helsinki has traditionally performed very well in the index, particularly in environmental performance at the city level. This year, Helsinki ranked first in Destination Management, Supplier Performance, and Environmental Performance and second in Social Progress. The city invests in enhancing the social sustainability of tourism by supporting local businesses on their path to sustainability and increasing resources for the development of tourist destinations. "International studies show that travellers are increasingly looking for more sustainable services and destinations. There will no doubt be increasing demand for the world's most sustainable tourist destination in the future," said Nina Vesterinen, Tourism Director at the City of Helsinki. Work continues on sustainable and smart tourism Helsinki's city strategy has set the goal of being the most sustainable and smartest tourist destination. Helsinki's Climate Action Plan for Tourism and Events also outlines Helsinki's goal of being at the top of the world in terms of sustainability, as verified by indexes and certifications. The goal has been to achieve the top spot in the Global Destination Sustainability (GDS) Index by 2025 at the latest. In addition to tourism, Helsinki is committed to reducing emissions in all its activities. Their goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. Carbon neutrality targets will be achieved, especially by increasing the share of renewable energy in heat and electricity production, as well as energy efficiency measures in buildings. The city has also invested in low-emission transport solutions: more than 30 per cent of the bus fleet in the Helsinki region has been electrified, and over 30 kilometres of new tramways will be introduced in Helsinki over the next decade. The City of Helsinki has several sustainability-related projects and measures underway. In terms of tourism, the most important of these are the development of inclusive tourism and additional investments in the participation of local residents in the development of tourism. They measure the carbon footprint of tourism, promote Helsinki's Climate Action Plan for Tourism, and support tourism companies on the path of sustainable travelling. The City of Helsinki is also interested in close collaboration with other tourist destinations on a national and international level.

David Sacks is known as a CEO/investor in multiple unicorns, and most recently a media mogul with All-In. In this episode, he sits down with Erik Torenberg to trace his intellectual and political history from his days fighting student activism at Stanford to now. We cover the political and cultural changes in the last 30 years of silicon valley, how the real distinction today is between the college-educated and the not, and how even though 2⁄3 of the country didn't go to college, their views are not represented in our institutions today. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: PhD on Moral Progress - Bibliography Review, published by Rafael Ruiz on December 10, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Epistemic Status: I've researched this broad topic for a couple of years. I've read about 30+ books and 100+ articles on the topic so far (I'm not really keeping count). I've also read many other works in the related areas of normative moral philosophy, moral psychology, moral epistemology, moral methodology, and metaethics, since it's basically my area of specialization within philosophy. This project will be my PhD thesis. However, I still have 3 years of the PhD to go, so a substantial amount of my opinions on the matter are subject to changes. Disclaimer: I have received some funding as a Forethought Foundation Fellow in support of my PhD research. But all the opinions expressed here are my own. Index. Part I - Bibliography Review Part II - Preliminary Takes and Opinions (I'm writing it, coming very soon!) More parts to be published later on. Introduction. Hi everyone, this is my first proper research-related post on the EA Forum, on a topic that I've been working on for several years, since even before my PhD, and now as part of my PhD in Philosophy at the London School of Economics. This post is the start of a series on my work on the topic of Moral Progress, which includes and intersects with Moral Circle Expansion (also called Inclusivism or Moral Inclusion), Moral Progress, Social Progress, Social Movements, the mechanisms that drive progress and regress, the possibilities of measuring these phenomena, and policy or practical implications. This first post is a bibliography review, which I hope will serve to orient future researchers that might want to tackle the same or similar topics. Hopefully it will help them to save time by separating the wheat from the chaff, the good research articles and books from the minor contributions. Initially, I had my reservations about doing a Bibliography Review, since now we have GPT4 which is quite good at purely neutral descriptive summarizing, so I felt maybe perhaps this work wasn't needed. However, given that now we have it as a good research assistant for pure facts, that also allows me more freedom to be more opinionated in my bibliography review. I'll try to tell you what I think is super worth reading, and what is "meh, skim it if you have free time", so you can sift through the literature in a more time-efficient way. The eventual goal outcome of the whole project would be to distil the main insights into book on the topic of Moral Progress with serious contributions to the current literature within interdisciplinary moral philosophy, but that probably won't happen until I finish my PhD thesis manuscript around 2026. Then after that, I'll have to rewrite that manuscript to turn it into a more accessible book, so it probably wouldn't be published until a later date. I'm also not sure just yet whether it would be an academic book on a University Press or something closer to What We Owe The Future, which aims to be accessible for a broader audience. So the finished work is quite a long way. On the brighter side, I will publish some of the key findings and takeaways on the EA Forum, probably in summarized form rather than the excruciatingly slow pace of writing in philosophy, which often takes 20 pages to make some minor points. Instead of that, I guess I'll post something closer to digestible bullet points with my views, attempting to foster online discussion, and then defend them in more detail over time and in the eventual book. Your feedback will of course be appreciated, particularly if I change my mind on substantial issues, connect me with other researchers, etc. So let's put our collective brains together (this is a pun having to do with cultural evolution that you might not understand y...

This public class, entitled "Towards a 'More Perfect Union': Race, Failure & Social Progress," was hosted by the Louisville Free Public Library in 2022, and features Dr. K. Bailey Thomas, assistant professor of Philosophy at the University of Louisville. Dr. Thomas discusses how our fear of failure ultimately impedes collective efforts in working towards establishing a racially equitable society. Many people find discussions about race to be extremely fraught and divisive, which is usually expressed as a fear of “saying the wrong thing”. This discomfort that arises when thinking and talking about racial inequity and injustice, arises from a collective social failure to be sensitive and attentive to racial privilege and oppression. In this episode, returning host Justin Schieber interviews Dr. Michael Hemmingsen on his 2020 paper titled Soul-Making and Social Progress which was published in the International Journal for Philosophy of Religion. John Hick's Soul-Making theodicy, according to which suffering exists to provide opportunities to develop our moral virtue, is a popular response to the problem of evil. In his paper, Dr. Hemmingsen argues that advocates of John Hick's Soul-Making theodicy are thereby committed to opposing social progress.

One of the central theories of classical economics is that markets respond quickly and efficiently to changes in demand. But the supply chain disruptions that left store shelves empty for much of the pandemic demonstrate that the markets aren't the efficient adapters that classic economists believe them to be. Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stiglitz explains why the tendency to believe in the market is one of the most deeply rooted trickle-down myths, and why government intervention is the best way to respond to economic downturns. This episode was originally released in May 2020. Joseph Stiglitz is a Nobel laureate economist and a professor at Columbia University. He is also the co-chair of the High-Level Expert Group on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress at the OECD, and the Chief Economist of the Roosevelt Institute. Our first episode fittingly drops on Friday the 13th, and we're covering the superstition behind what's made this date notoriously “unlucky.” From religious folklore to cultural legends, we'll uncover the mystic theories and remind listeners why it might be best to stay at home after all. We'll also briefly discuss the origin of the Friday the 13th horror franchise and cover the sadistic 1988 murder of Sharon Gregory, known as the Friday the 13th murder. Did the obsession with Jason Voorhees push Mark Branch over the edge in killing an innocent woman? Buckle up for a hauntingly jam-packed episode full of superstition, true crime, and more.Theme music: Deep Barons

A 2019 study by the Pew Research Center, surveyed Americans' attitudes across 30 political values such as guns, race, climate, immigration, and foreign policy. The average gap between Democrats and Republicans on these hot button issues was 39 percentage points. And things don't seem to be getting any better when it comes to finding common ground. In the summer of 2020, another study by Pew reported that 77% of Americans said the country was now more divided than before the COVID-19 pandemic began. But division isn't an issue solely owned by the United States. The rise in populism, old and new cultural conflicts, and economic hardships have all intensified polarization and conflict across the world. What led us to these deep divisions? Is it human nature or a product of systems we've created? How are social media and information echo chambers contributing? One thing is clear - to solve our greatest challenges people need to work together across differences. To discuss how we get there, we're turning to experts on how people and communities transcend divides. Amanda Ripley is an investigative journalist and New York Times best-selling author. Her latest book High Conflict is an exploration of what happens when people get locked in seemingly intractable feuds and how they've broken free. Amanda is joined by Eric Liu, co-founder and CEO of Citizen University. He also directs the Aspen Institute's Citizenship & American Identity Program: home to an initiative that trains people in how to have what they call: “better arguments.” To learn more about High Conflict and Amanda's other work visit amandaripley.com and for more on the Better Arguments project, visit betterarguments.org.
