In the summer of 1673, two now famous Frenchmen and five others who are all but nameless traveled by canoe from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan at the Straits of Mackinac to central Arkansas on the western bank of the Mississippi River, and then back again. Louis Jolliet was a new sort of Frenchman, a natural born North American, having come into this world in Quebec in 1645, now a fur trader and voyageur. Jacques Marquette was the more usual sort, having been born in France in 1637.  By the time of the expedition Marquette was a Jesuit priest, long known to the nations of North America as a “Black Robe.” The episode begins with an overview of New France in the years between Samuel de Champlain's death in 1635 and 1661, when it languished because the Five Nations of the Iroquois had it entirely bottled up. The expedition was a marker of New France's rapid expansion after King Louis XIV began to rule in his own right that year. Along the way, our heroes become the first Europeans to visit Iowa (Go Hawks!), see some extraordinary painted monsters, learn the importance of the calumet, and find a short portage in the eastern continental divide at a place soon to be called Chicago. It's time for Colin's pick in our second Extra Time bonus episode, and we're travelling back to 1985, to a year of Irish sport that feels almost too good to be true. Watching a young Barry McGuigan defy the odds to beat Eusebio Pedroza, Ireland winning the Five Nations, and Dennis Taylor's famous black-ball final became formative memories in his childhood. However, Colin's had to learn the hard way that not every year as a fan can be like 1985!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Nine years after the Jesuits Isaac Jogues and Jean de Lelande were tomahawked by Iroquois warriors, a baby girl was born near the place of their martyrdom, Auriesville, New York. Her mother was a Christian Algonquin, taken captive by the Iroquois and given as wife to the chief of the Mohawk clan, the boldest and fiercest of the Five Nations. When she was four, Tekakwitha lost her parents and little brother in a smallpox epidemic that left her disfigured and half blind. She was adopted by an uncle, who succeeded her father as chief. He hated the coming of the Blackrobes—Jesuit missionaries—but could do nothing to them because a peace treaty with the French required their presence in villages with Christian captives. She was moved by the words of three Blackrobes who lodged with her uncle, but fear of him kept her from seeking instruction. Tekakwitha refused to marry a Mohawk brave, and at 19 finally got the courage to take the step of converting. She was baptized with the name Kateri–Catherine–on Easter Sunday. Now she would be treated as a slave. Because she would not work on Sunday, Kateri received no food that day. Her life in grace grew rapidly. She told a missionary that she often meditated on the great dignity of being baptized. She was powerfully moved by God's love for human beings and saw the dignity of each of her people. She was always in danger, for her conversion and holy life created great opposition. On the advice of a priest, Kateri stole away one night and began a 200-mile walking journey to a Christian Indian village at Sault St. Louis, near Montreal. For three years she grew in holiness under the direction of a priest and an older Iroquois woman, giving herself totally to God in long hours of prayer, in charity, and in strenuous penance. At 23, Kateri took a vow of virginity, an unprecedented act for an Indian woman whose future depended on being married. She found a place in the woods where she could pray an hour a day—and was accused of meeting a man there! Her dedication to virginity was instinctive: Kateri did not know about religious life for women until she visited Montreal. Inspired by this, she and two friends wanted to start a community, but the local priest dissuaded her. She humbly accepted an “ordinary” life. She practiced extremely severe fasting as penance for the conversion of her nation. Kateri Tekakwitha died the afternoon before Holy Thursday. Witnesses said that her emaciated face changed color and became like that of a healthy child. The lines of suffering, even the pockmarks, disappeared and the touch of a smile came upon her lips. She was beatified in 1980 and canonized in 2012. Reflection We like to think that our proposed holiness is thwarted by our situation. If only we could have more solitude, less opposition, better health. Kateri Tekakwitha repeats the example of the saints: Holiness thrives on the cross, anywhere. Yet she did have what Christians—all people—need: the support of a community. She had a good mother, helpful priests, Christian friends. These were present in what we call primitive conditions, and blossomed in the age-old Christian triad of prayer, fasting and almsgiving: union with God in Jesus and the Spirit, self-discipline and often suffering, and charity for her brothers and sisters. Unsung History

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 13, 2023 54:31

Before Europeans landed in North America, five Indigenous nations around what would become New York State came together to form the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. When the Europeans arrived, the French called them the Iroquois Confederacy, and the English called them the League of Five Nations. Those Five Nations were the Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas, and Senecas; the Tuscaroras joined the Confederacy in 1722. Some founding father of the United States, including George Washington and Benjamin Franklin admired the Haudenosaunee and incorporated their ideas into the U.S. Constitution. Despite that admiration, though, the United States government and the state government of New York did not always treat the Haudenosaunee with respect, and Haudenosaunee leaders had to navigate a difficult terrain in maintaining their sovereignty.  Today we're going to look at the relationship between the Haudenosaunee and the United States through the stories of four individuals: Red Jacket, Ely S. Parker, Harriet Maxwell Converse, and Arthur C. Parker. Joining me in this episode is Dr. John C. Winters, Assistant Professor of History at the University of Southern Mississippi and author of The Amazing Iroquois and the Invention of the Empire State. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The goal of this "high altitude" episode is to establish a framework for forthcoming episodes covering the period between roughly 1640 and 1670. We look at the geopolitical landscape in the territories of today's northeastern United States and eastern Canada in the middle 17th century. The key players are the European settlers - English, French, Dutch, and Swedish - and the most important Indian nations - the Susquehannocks, the Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, the Leni Lenapes, and the Hurons. They fiercely competed over the trade in fur, from the European point of view, and manufactured consumer products and weapons, from the Indian point of view. There would be blood. Growing up in Bay City, Michigan Nicole's formitive years were spent with a grand fondness for the paranormal. From an Early age, she began to dabble in scary and spooky endevors. As she grew up she started her own tour and investigation group.  With years of experience under her belt, she used her talents to begin writing her now famous book, Haunted Bay City, Michigan which later lead to her releases of Haunted Detroit. And soon coming another haunted book, Haunted Bars and Inns of Michigan. Detroit, the largest city in the state of Michigan, was settled in 1701 by French colonists. It is the first European settlement above tidewater in North America. Founded as a New France fur trading post, it began to expand during the 19th century with American settlements around the Great Lakes. By 1920, based on the booming auto industry and immigration, it became a world-class industrial powerhouse and the fourth-largest city in the United States. It held that standing through the mid-20th century. The first Europeans to settle in Detroit were French country traders and colonists from the New Orleans (the La Louisiane) colony. They were joined by traders from Montreal and Quebec; all had to contend with the powerful Five Nations of the League of the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee), who took control of the southern shores of Lakes Erie and Huron through the Beaver Wars of the 17th century. Also present and powerful, but further to the north, were the Council of Three Fires (Anishinaabe). Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, Virgin Lectionary: 387The Saint of the day is Saint Kateri TekakwithaSaint Kateri Tekakwitha’s Story The blood of martyrs is the seed of saints. During the summer of 1609, Samuel de Champlain attempted to form better relations and alliances with the local First Nations tribes including Wendat-Hurons, Algonquins, and Montagnais who lived in the area of the St. Lawrence River. These tribes sought Champlain's help in their war against the Haudenosaunee, also known as the Iroquois Confederacy, League or Five Nations. The founder of New France set off with his men to explore the Rivière des Iroquois—now known as the Richelieu River—and became the first known European to lay eyes on and map one of the continent's majestic bodies of water, named Lake Champlain in his honor. In today's episode we continue our series on the "deep" history of America by examining the theme of democracy, which has been experimented with here in the Western Hemisphere for thousands of years before the time of the American Revolution. In this episode, we explore how democracy existed not only during the golden age of the Maya, an idea we first introduced in Part 1, but also with the Iroquois tribe of North American Indians. Here, the sage and prophet Deganawida established the League of Five Nations, which emphasized democratic institutions here in North America one or two hundred years before the arrival of the European colonizers. Stay tuned for Part 3 of this series, which should be following soon. Website: www.alexsachon.comSubstack: thewisdomtradition.substack.comE-store: thewisdomtradition.bigcartel.comThank you, - Alex

With Russia's invasion of the Ukraine and the climate crisis, we seem to be closer to a global catastrophe and the demise of human civilisation than ever before.  Luckily, a new study has confirmed that New Zealand is better placed to survive an apocalyptic winter than most other nations. Researchers from The Univeristy of Otago and Adapt Research studied 38 island nations and judged them on 13 risk factors to predict success of post-apocalyptic survival. Nanotechnologist Dr Michelle Dickinson says New Zealand has unique advantages, including being placed close enough to the ocean to be cushioned from temperature plunges and a strong food export economy. The other nations that were in the best position to survive an apocalyptic winter are: Australia, Iceland, The Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Now, in the tail end of 2021, discourse about restorative justice and public safety lack imagination. We tend to “do what we've always done.” NYU Historian Nicole Eustace brings us the story of the search for justice following the 1722 murder of a Native American man at the hands of two White men. Covered With Night is a detailed history of how the Pennyslvania colony leaders had to learn to restore the peace – or face war – with the Five Nations. in particular, we bear witness to how the colonists never truly understood the peoples of the Haudenosaunee Confederation. In this month's book club, we read a deep history of the fallout of a murder in the Penn colony. In this history, we learn that our laws have been around shorter than we care to remember and see alternative ways of coming to justice that have existed and thrived. A powerful tail of how we, as peoples, can live together with more equity and justice – how restorative justice has worked in the world, how it could again. If only we can listen and learn.

Austin Healey, also known as the Leicester Lip, was a hugely versatile player, gaining international caps for England at scrum-half, fly-half and wing. Healey began his career with Orrell and Waterloo at wing or outside centre before switching to scrum-half when he signed for Leicester Tigers in 1996. It was this admirable versatility that proved to be Healey's greatest success and disadvantage in the game leading to him often, unfairly, being labelled as a "jack of all trades, master of none". In reality Healey was at times a fiercely intelligent scrum-half, full of snap and niggle and always aware of the chance for a sniping break. On the wing, his pace and tactical awareness allowed him opportunities at club and international level following the arrival of Fijian Waisale Serevi at Leicester. His desire to play at fly-half was granted at Leicester at the expense of Andy Goode, but Healey never reached the heights expected of him in the position. Indeed, he only won a single England cap at 10. Healey was an often outspoken member of the rugby fraternity, having spats with coaches Graham Henry, Andy Robinson and Pat Howard during his eventful career. He received his full England debut against Ireland in the 1997 Five Nations, and went on to amass 51 England caps. During his career he was a Lions tourist in 1997 on the victorious tour of South Africa and again in 2001 during the series loss to Australia. His only Test caps came as a replacement in the second and third Tests in 1997. Healey's finest moments on a rugby pitch came in the green and red of Leicester however. In the 2001 an 2002 Heineken Cup finals Healey was instrumental in bringing the silverware to Welford Road. He provided the break that led to the winning score against Stade Francais in 2001, and he scored the decisive try himself against Munster in 2002. Following the high of the 2002 Heineken Cup win, it was back down to earth when Healey was left out of England's World Cup-winning squad in 2003. This event would gnaw at Healey to the end of his career, and he never played for England again following the World Cup warm-up with France in August 2003. His retirement came at the end of the 2005-06 season following several damaging injuries. Healey then worked for Credit Suisse and served as an analyst for the BBC and Sky. In 2008 Healey took part in the sixth series of Strictly Come Dancing, following in the footsteps of Matt Dawson and Kenny Logan. In 2010, Healey was confirmed as ESPN's lead analyst prior to the UK channel's first season of Aviva Premiership rugby.

The Mohawks called the Algonquin “rondak,” a slur meaning “tree eater” because they ate the inner layer of bark during hard winters to prevent scurvy The English exhausted all of their native “mast trees,” Imported trees from Russia and Norway and Bosnia These trees needed to be 3' feet wide at the base and 36' high Had to keep pace with the Dutch, French, and Spanish This was the driver of the Pine Tree Riots Explains why the pine was on the first Flag of New England http://www.seacoastnh.com/president-meshech-weare/ https://www.founderoftheday.com/founder-of-the-day/weare https://northernwoodlands.org/wood_lit/entry/white-pine-american-history-and-the-tree-that-made-a-nation Suggestions/Feedback Do you have a topic that you would like for us to discuss? To understand their decision, Chris Calton takes a look at the long history of Indians becoming, in the eyes of Americans, "civilized". Chris Calton recounts the controversial history of the Civil War. This is the 31st episode in the third season of Historical Controversies. "Matching players to the game? Don't you mean the other way around?" Not today; And we've already discussed [customising the campaign to the players](https://dwarves.podiant.co/e/36082ec3b14f62/). ### Eran Arbel's email (1:13) > Hello good Dwarves. Long time listener, first time writer. > I'm going to start a new campaign soon (in about three months, so swift answers are appreciated, thanks). I know there are a lot of people out there who want to play and probably a lot who would like to play this (the new D&D season) so I can probably pick and choose. I have a certain style I like and I already have an idea of how I would like the game to be (challenging combat but lots of social interaction, characters who think things through and not just rush in, and players who aren't turned off with just role playing for its own sake). How do I get my wants across while not turning away potential good players and also getting the perfect group I want to play the game with? [D&D Adventurers League](http://dnd.wizards.com/playevents/organized-play) There is no "perfect" group, there is only the group that is perfect for you. Gaming groups are like relationships: the perfect partner isn't someone you find, it's something the two of you create together. ### What do I want? (3:30) ### How do I get my wants across? (5:30) * Use mechanical examples: I want exploding dice, because it's unpredictable and exciting. * Use thematic examples: I want that feeling of a world far away and strange, watch [John Carter](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Carter_(film)). * Be concise: Choose three main things that are important, that we'll see a lot in the campaign. These are WHY we play THIS campaign. * Explain what this is *not*, especially if any of your potential players know a lot about the aspects you've described. The game is in [Eberron](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eberron) - but it's not about the Five Nations. We will not be touching Khorvaire at all. Read [Odyssey](http://drivethrurpg.com/product/116551/Odyssey-The-Complete-Game-Masters-Guide-to-Campaign-Management?affiliate_id=29668) ([other versions](https://www.enginepublishing.com/odyssey-the-complete-game-masters-guide-to-campaign-management)), they probably have more suggestions. They devote a whole chapter to how to formulate a group. ### What won't you compromise on? (10:10) In order to save everyone (especially you) time and effort make sure that you start off with the thing that you can't or won't compromise on. The trick is to make sure that people understand what they're getting into right off the bat. So that people who are not interested in your type of game will know to pass. Examples may include: The gaming system; Online or in person; Geographical location of games (if applies); Genre ([be specific](http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Genres)!). Player responsibilities - how much involvement is asked of them. ### Turning away potential good players (16:25) The more specific the game you want to try, the harder it is to find players, so you should compromise. I really want to run a huge, politics-heavy [MechWarrior](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MechWarrior) game, but my group hates taking care of minute details, or don't enjoy mecha combat. Lelouch of the Rebellion (aka [Code Geass](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_Geass)) Get the cool factor right from the start. It can be a two minutes video or an opening sequence for your adventure, or a picture of the bizarre world you'll be playing in or an ancient scroll that sets the game in motion. The idea is both to differentiate you from other groups and to indicate to your prospective gaming group members that you're willing to go the extra mile.
