Well, well, well. If it isn't the infamous Macaw episode... As you guys know, the possibility of a Macaw episode has been thrown around a lot on this podcast. No one thought it would happen. No one DREAMED it would happen. But yet, the wait is finally over, and what better person to help discuss one of the most intelligent species of bird on the planet than Avian behaviour expert and celebrated animal trainer, Barbara Heidenreich. Join Alice and Barbara as they get philosophical about the term "asshole" and dive deep into topics like: Blu Lu - the Blue-Throated Macaw, San Diego's Frozen Zoo, Macaw sleep cycles and more. Truly a calming presence to Alice's squirrel-like hyperactivity, Barbara is the perfect guest to slow it down and really look at the bigger picture of behaviour. Aren't we all capable of assholery depending on the circumstance? Find out on this week's episode of "Asshole Animals with Alice"! Our Charity of the Week is the INCREDIBLE Bird Endowment, founded by the late Laney Rickman, whose passion lives on in the conservation work happening as a result of her dream. Barbara Heidenreich is an expert exotic animal trainer. We met Barbara in Boston at ABAI and we were fascinated by the way she uses ABA and behavioral principles in animal training. Barbara specializes in working with animals and she works mostly with zoos and facilities that care for exotic species. She also works with veterinary professionals and conservationists. Veterinary medicine is now becoming more focused on cooperative care, reducing animal stress, and making the animal care experience fear-free. Behavioral analysis fits perfectly with this new focus, and like traditional ABA, it's centered around compassion.Just like with humans, when animals exhibit behavioral issues, there's always a reason behind them, and Barbara applies the science of ABA in her profession. Also, like people, it's always important to understand a particular species' habits and tendencies to help come up with the best behavioral solutions. She also shares a great story about correcting problematic behavior in a rare bird in New Zealand that you won't want to miss. What's Inside:Barbara's journey and how she developed her career. How the ABA principles can be applied to animal trainingStories from Barbara's experience working with animals.Mentioned In This Episode:HowToABA.com/joinHow to ABA on YouTubeFind us on FacebookFollow us on InstagramAnimalTrainingFundamentals.com

My bestie Barbara Heidenreich and I sit down - this time in person - for a conversation about what it actually means to be scientific in animal care and behavior. And why that's important. In this episode I get into one of my favorite subjects. It's not so much about knowing scientific terminology, but it does require some specialized skill sets. I do think every trainer needs to be a little bit of an engineer, a physicist, an artist and most definitely an ethologist. All these skills combine to help trainers see ways in which we can manipulate the environment to make it more likely animals will easily give us behavior that we can reinforce. The environment can include objects with which we need the animal to engage. The environment can also include the space we are going to utilize to train the behavior. This may need to be modified to increase comfort and/or to facilitate creating desired actions. All of this requires a lot of creative thinking and attention to detail. Check out the podcast to learn more and get lots of real-life examples. Visit the episode webpage for photos, links, and video examples. - Barbara Heidenreich

Fluency may seem intuitive ….on the surface. In behavior terms it is currently defined as the fluid combination of accuracy and speed that characterizes competent performance, in other words doing the right thing without hesitation. However doing the right thing in real life application can involve many different measures. In this podcast Barbara Heidenreich discusses what criteria to measure to evaluate whether a behavior is being presented with accuracy. The benefit of measuring is that it highlights what aspects of the behavior have been successfully trained and what particular aspect(s) still need work to achieve fluency. Barbara shares examples relevant to both zoo and companion animal trainers. Visit the episode webpage for video examples from the podcast.

Not all repetitive behavior is stereotypic. Many times it is the result of reinforcement. Determining why an animal is presenting repetitive behavior requires asking our selves a series of questions that can reveal triggers and consequences that maintain the undesired behavior. This can then help us develop a strategy to address the problem. In this podcast Barbara Heidenreich goes over these questions as well as defines stereotypic behavior and some practices to avoid when dealing with a true stereotypy that can make the problem worse! Fresh water dolphins like the Amazon River Dolphin face a myriad of challenges including human encroachment and habitat loss, pollution, the damming of river systems, and poaching. The Amazon River Dolphin Conservation Foundation www.ARDCF.org supports local efforts to protect a storied species and its rainforest ecosystem. ARDCF founder and director, Suzanne Smith discusses what she describes as healthy, natural interactions between dolphins and people that protect both animals and people, sustain local culture, and transform visitors to ardent Amazon conservationists. These interactions represent a small scale effort to preserve the Amazon River dolphin through the use of platforms where free ranging wild dolphins get a few kilos of supplemental fish from platform operators while visitors learn about and can observe the animals for a few minutes. The platforms are remote, highly regulated, and provide an income for the families that operate them. If the animals aren't becoming habituated to humans or dependent on a free snack, could this be a one region's way to prevent river dolphin extinction? As we've heard on previous episodes, when it comes to conservation strategies that work, one size does not fit all. And, while uncontrolled (and illegal) public feeding of wild dolphins is a serious problem in the US that harms or kills wildlife, these platform interactions might just be a way forward to help preserve river dolphins in the remotest parts of Brazil. Building upon the wisdom of Amazon traditions, practices and beliefs with findings from modern conservation biology, Amazon River Dolphin Conservation Foundation works to preserve the river dolphin from the corrosive pressures that threaten the survival of the dolphins and their world.  Plus our first "Tell me something I don't know about animals" with former guest, Barbara Heidenreich. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/leaving-behind-a-legacy-of-kindness/id1385908352?i=1000415256474 www.AnimalTrainingFundamentals.com.
