Madison Utendahl returns to the show on the heels of an incredible career pivot and with her burnout in check. Madison has appeared as a guest on the show in her capacity as the Webby-Award-winning and Forbes 30 Under 30 director of the Utendahl Creative Branding Studio, and founding member of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Refinery29's 29Rooms, and Museum of Ice Cream. Today she arrives as the Founder of Utendahl Consulting, the magnetic voice behind BURNT on Substack, and a fractional CMO. Madison has proven that she can do it all, and her nervous system tells the story of what happens when she does. During our conversation, we talked all about what having massive ambition and a work ethic in overdrive costs and how she's healing in public. During our chat, Madison walks us through her earliest experiences with ambition, success, and burnout in school and work. She shared that she always knew she wanted more from life than others, and that she was willing to do whatever it took to achieve it. And while she has achieved incredible success, Madison has also learned difficult lessons about burnout and how it manifests itself in her body and mind. We talked about how she came to understand when she needs to take a step back and sometimes away from her professional pursuits and pivot to something new. Madison explained that this can mean a career change, shuttering a successful business, or trying non-Western therapies to find peace and healing. In this incredibly transparent conversation, Madison opens up about the highs and lows of building a fulfilling career and defining success on her own terms and with her mental health intact.Tune in as we discuss:(00:00) Welcome Madison(8:55) How Being Raised In New York Shaped Her Work Ethic(16:00) Her Burnout Triggers(17:50) Taking A Sequential Approach To Life(26:55) How Burnout Shows Up In Her Body(33:33) Experiencing Burnout As An Entrepreneur(40:20) Why She Turned Down A Multi-Million Dollar Opportunity(43:03) How She Ethically Closed Utendahl Creative(49:08) How She Became An Artist and CMO(50:45) Why She Turned To Non-Western Therapy(54:45) Dealing With Intergenerational Trauma & Anxiety(59:00) The Hoffman Process and Ketamine Therapy(01:08:14) How She Navigates Estrangement With Her Mother(01:10:25) Designing Her Day(01:24:01) When She Feels The Most BeautifulRate, Subscribe & Review the Podcast on AppleJoin the Naked Beauty Community on IG: @nakedbeautyplanetThanks for all the love and support. At just seventeen years old, Lexi found herself pregnant and facing pressure from her doctor to terminate her pregnancy after her baby was diagnosed with Spina Bifida. She was told her son would never live a normal life, but despite the fear and uncertainty, Lexi chose to continue her pregnancy and gave birth via cesarean section. Today, her son is fourteen years old, healthy, and thriving. Two years later, Lexi became pregnant again, but her second pregnancy ended in tragedy. Throughout her prenatal care, she repeatedly voiced concerns that something was wrong, yet her symptoms were dismissed by providers. Her baby was ultimately stillborn due to severe undiagnosed IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction). After these two birth experiences, Lexi lost trust in the mainstream maternity care system and turned to midwifery care for her future pregnancies. In this episode, she shares her journey through pregnancy after loss, cesarean birth, stillbirth, VBAC after two cesareans (VBA2C), and ultimately achieving a healing home birth with a 10-pound baby! We sit down with Dr Lulu Pullar, Brisbane Lions AFLW player and doctor, to unpack why sport can be the simplest pathway to belonging, confidence, and hope. We also go deep on what it takes to balance elite performance with emergency medicine, and why access matters more than talent when you're building futures in remote Australia. • the real purpose of DreameD and why “freedom to dream” comes first • football as the connector for identity, belonging, and community strength in remote Indigenous communities • Lulu's sporting background and why switching from soccer to AFL felt natural • why women's sport quality rises with access to strength and conditioning from a young age • keeping joy at the centre of sport to survive the grind of high performance • what parents and coaches can do without taking choice away from the athlete • the reality of balancing medicine and AFLW and the self-doubt it creates • how elite sport improves clinical practice through feedback, reflection, and communication • making medicine more accessible so the workforce better represents the community • lifestyle medicine and preventative health as credible healthcare interventions • what DreameD camps deliver on the ground and why connection across communities is a win • sponsorship, funding, and practical ways people can support DreameD and tell better stories from Central Australia Be sure to check us out across all forms of social media and subscribe to this channel if you want to stay up to date to the latest episodes and any other anecdotes with which we might share across these video platforms. This episode of Engage and Equip features Zane, a missionary with Overland Missions serving among the Maasai people of Tanzania. Zane shares how God redirected him from a pre-med path at UW-Madison into full-time missions, and the remarkable things he's witnessed on the ground — from a chief hearing the gospel for the first time after 20 years of pastoring, to a woman named Rhoda who dreamed of Zane and his translator a decade before they ever arrived, to a man named Edward whose life was transformed overnight after years of addiction and spiritual bondage. He also reflects on what authentic, culturally-sensitive ministry looks like in practice — going slowly, discipling deeply, and trusting that locally-raised disciples will carry the work further than any outsider ever could.   Engage & Equip is a resource designed to help form substantive disciples for the local church. They explore the weight of calling, the lies of separation, and the slow awakening to a love that doesn't need to be earned. This is a conversation about moving from fear to trust, lack to abundance, and performance to rest. Did life turn out the way you imagined it would? Most of us quietly carry two versions of our lives, the ideal one we dreamed about and the messy, imperfect one we actually live. In this Wednesday morning Kabbalah class, Rabbi Yisroel Bernath explores a powerful insight from Parshat Vayakhel–Pekudei and Chassidic teachings: why the Torah repeats the story of the Mishkan twice, and what that reveals about our own lives.Drawing from the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe and Tanya, the class examines the difference between the “heavenly sanctuary” of our dreams and the “earthly sanctuary” we build through our struggles, relationships, and imperfections. The surprising message? G-d does not dwell in the perfect life we imagine. G-d dwells in the real life we build. This class offers a calming and empowering perspective: the challenges, disappointments, and imperfections of our lives are not obstacles to holiness… they are the very materials through which we create it.Key TakeawaysEvery person lives with two realities: the life we imagined and the life we are actually living.Western philosophy often values the ideal over the real, but Torah reverses that assumption. The Torah repeats the story of the Mishkan to teach that the earthly sanctuary is not a copy, it is the true destination.G-d's deepest presence is revealed not in perfection, but in the human effort to transform imperfect reality.Your struggles, scars, and disappointments are not detours from your purpose, they are the building blocks of your spiritual home.Holiness is not found in escaping life's imperfections, but in transforming them.True beauty emerges when we build meaning, faith, and love within the life we actually have.#Kabbalah #JewishWisdom #VayakhelPekudei #chassidus #Tanya #spiritualgrowth #purpose #JewishLearning #InnerPeace #FaithInAction #TorahInsights #RabbiBernath #JewishNDG #MeaningfulLife #MindfulLiving Available now:Paperback: https://www.amazon.com/Forgiveness-Experiment-What-Would-Your/dp/1069217638Kindle: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FR2QNJL6Audiobook: https://bit.ly/4tPFZhVSupport the showGot your own question for Rabbi Bernath? Andrew was a British modern languages student in 1989. He recounts the serendipitous moment when he stumbled upon an advert for a work and holiday trip to the GDR. The trip was organized by the Great Britain GDR Society, which allowed participants to experience life behind the Iron Curtain. For just £120, students could immerse themselves in a culture that was vastly different from what they knew. The only requirement was to join the society, which piqued the curiosity of our guest, who had previously visited West Germany but had yet to set foot in the East. As the group engaged in work on a building site, they encountered East German soldiers and workers, sharing stories and forging unexpected friendships. The camaraderie that developed during these moments highlighted the human connections that transcended political boundaries. Andrew reflects on the peculiarities of the trip, from the shoddy living conditions to the surreal experience of mingling with locals who had their own dreams and aspirations. From Čapek's enslaved robots to Asimov's hopeful laws, from Wells's remote-controlled war machines to Orwell's watchful screens, the blueprints were drawn in stories. Professor Mark Brake reveals how these fictions didn't just predict the future—they scripted it. Are we masters of our creations, or have the machines we dreamed up already begun reshaping humanity itself? The déjà vu is real. The reckoning is now. GUEST: Professor Mark Brake is a leading science communicator and author exploring the hidden feedback loop between imagination and innovation. He is the author of FutureWorld: Where Science Fiction Becomes Science and numerous bestselling books examining the real science behind Star Wars, superheroes, time travel, and the multiverse. Known for translating complex ideas into gripping narratives, Brake argues that science fiction doesn't merely entertain — it quietly shapes the laboratories, technologies, and futures we eventually inhabit. Send us a textIn this final episode of the year, I'm talking about something I see all the time in my work — but something women rarely feel able to admit out loud: that the desperate longing for a baby doesn't always match how they feel once they are actually here. After more than two decades supporting women through pregnancy, birth, and those early vulnerable weeks, I've heard this story in so many different forms. Today, I'm sharing the experience of a mum I met at a recent coffee morning — Emma — who gave me permission to talk about her journey.Emma had two miscarriages before this pregnancy. She spent months just trying to get to the birth, believing that once her baby was safely here, everything would fall into place. But her birth ended up being long, heavily managed, and exhausting, leaving her feeling out of control. She also struggled with the after-effects of the pain relief she received. And when she finally held her baby, she didn't feel the rush of emotion she'd imagined. Her question to me — quiet, honest, and full of guilt — forms the heart of this episode.Together, we unpack why so many women feel this way, why these feelings don't mean anything is wrong, and how the emotional transition into motherhood is far more complex than most people prepare you for.If you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.uk Follow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann - https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresford Please remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences. Tim Berners-Lee: The man who dreamed of a World Wide Web

Outlook

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 28, 2025 37:34

The inventor of the World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee, on the unique upbringing that inspired a tech revolution. Tim Berners-Lee has well and truly changed the world. For under-35s it's almost impossible to imagine what life might have been like without him. But when he launched the World Wide Web in December 1990, no-one knew the success it would become - and most struggled to understand why the world needed the Web at all. Tim, however, grew up steeped in the knowledge that computers held the key to the future. His parents worked on the Ferranti Mark 1 - the world's first commercial computer - and raised Tim on a diet of science demonstrations and electronic tinkering. His mother Mary Lee was the family's driving force, encouraging an eclectic mix of logical thinking, creative problem-solving, camping trips and a spirit of 'watchful negligence' - all of which gave the introverted young Tim the confidence to think outside the box and find solutions for himself. So when he went to work at CERN in Geneva in his late-20s and saw how computers struggled to talk to one another, he was perfectly placed to imagine and build what would become the World Wide Web.Tim's vision for the Web was built around positivity - where anyone with access to an internet connection could freely share ideas with anyone else. He knew that the key to its success was universality, so he made the decision to give the Web away for free. As a result, Tim Berners-Lee is not a billionaire. But he says that's just the way he likes it, making him free to go for walks and swims in the Serpentine in London without being recognised. It's not all been good news though. In the 35 years since its creation, the Web has been used as a base to build social media and AI empires that Tim says don't always act in our best interests. He fears the addictive effects of social media apps on children's mental health, and has decided to stop using Instagram as he was too often getting hooked on the feed. Tim says that his latest mission is to build a form of pro-human AI as an antidote to systems owned by Big Tech, and aims to help people reclaim control of their personal data so that the Web can, once again, belong to everyone. Since striking Iran's nuclear sites and military personnel last June, America and Israel have brought the Islamic regime to its knees. A web of paranoia, triggered by Israel's systematic dismantling of Iran's terrorist surrogates and in-country air defense systems, has caused the regime to lash out against an already wary population.   The Obama-Biden administration tried for years to position Iran, and its surrogates, as a “counterweight” to Israel and the more moderate Arab countries in the region, favoring neither one side nor the other. President Donald Trump's strike on Iran and subsequent sanctions have tipped the scales in favor of Israel and the more moderate Middle East regimes. “ We don't have to be the instigators. We don't have to stage coups. All we have to do is turn up the heat and let this pot boil over. And boil over it will,” argues Victor Davis Hanson on today's edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words.”
