Whitley Fund for Nature 2025 winners from Brazil and Nepal tell Datshiane Navanayagam about their efforts to save the plants and animals they love from extinction.Reshu Bashyal is working to stop illegal poaching of wild orchids and Maire's Yew trees in Nepal. Both plants are prized for their medicinal properties. Reshu is the research lead at Kathmandu-based Greenhood Nepal and has interviewed hundreds of yew harvesters to understand their motivations and harvest techniques. She is now restoring 1,000 hectares of habitat for orchids and Maire's Yews, creating a community forest to promote best practices and developing an app for law enforcers to identify 100 plants that are trafficked.Dr Yara Barros has revived jaguars from the brink of extinction in Iguacu National Park in Brazil where numbers plunged to just 11 individuals. Her solutions include setting up a 24/7 rapid response unit where local people can report sightings or attacks by jaguars. Yara started her career working with the last Spix's Macaw in the wild before going to work in a zoo. (Piano music stops) Welcome to Ten Things I Like About… I'm Kiersten, your host, and this is a podcast about misunderstood or unknown creatures in nature. Some we'll find right out side our doors and some are continents away but all are fascinating.  This podcast will focus ten, ten minute episodes on different animals and their amazing characteristics. Please join me on this extraordinary journey, you won't regret it. This is the final episode of Screamers and we'll be talking about conservation. Like everything else with Screamers this episode will have a few twists. The tenth thing I like about Screamers is conservation. Each species has a story of it's own, so we'll take them one by one. Let's start off with the Southern Screamer. Southern Screamer, Chauna torquata, also known as the Crested Screamer is found from the eastern half of Bolivia south into Argentina as far as Buenos Ares Province and east through Paraguay into south western Brazil and Uruguay. The conservation status of the Southern Screamer is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources as Least Concern. This means that Southern Screamer population numbers are steady or increasing. Their population trend is listed as stable with adult individuals estimated between 66,700 to 667,000 individuals. The last time this species was assessed was in 2024. This species of Screamer is impacted by habitat loss. As wild lands are drained and deforested to create more land for cattle ranching and farming, Southern Screamers lose vital habitat, but a 27,000 acre reserve created in 2008 by Asociacion Armonia to protect the Blue-throated Macaw had the added bonus of offering protected habitat to the Southern Screamer. Barba Azul Nature Reserve protects 250 species of birds and is an important stop over for migratory shorebirds.  If you are interested in seeing the Southern Screamer at the reserve you can book a conservation birding trip through American Bird Conservancy. All fees support the reserve and American Bird Conservancy's mission for protecting wild spaces for birds. Now there are other things keeping the Southern Screamer protected, this is the twist for this species, ranchers and farmers actually like having Southern Screamer nearby as they are excellent guard birds and raise the alarm when any predators come near. Sometimes people sneak a young Screamer away from the parents and keep them on their property for exactly that reason.  Southern Screamers have also been seen eating invasive plants species, such as white clover, which means they are helping their own conservation efforts.  The Northern Screamer, Chauna chavaria, also known as the Black-necked Screamer is in a similar situation as the Southern Screamer. This Screamer is found across northern Columbia from the Atrato River and Magdalena River valleys east into the Lake Maracaibo area of Venezuela. They are also under pressure from habitat destruction for ranching and agricultural use. As of the latest surveys in 2023, the Northern Screamer is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN. Their population is stable with 60,000 to 130,000 mature adults. Locally, in Columbia and Venezuela, they are listed as Vulnerable. Conservation efforts in these countries include educational campaigns bringing awareness to Northern Screamers and their importance in the local environment. Several preserves have also been established to help protect the wetland areas that these birds rely upon. Other threats to the Northern Screamer include egg collection by humans for use as food and collection of young for the local pet trade.  The last species of Screamer, the Horned Screamer, Anhima cornuta, is found in the Amazonian regions of Venezuela, to the eastern llanos of Columbia, to eastern Bolivia and south-central Brazil. Their latest assessment by the IUCN was in July of 2024 and they are currently listed as Least Concern with a stable mature adult population estimated between 16,700 to 66,700. There are not many conservation efforts in the region specifically aimed at the Horned Screamer, but there are established conservation sites throughout their range to prevent more wetlands from being drained for ranching needs.  The subcutaneous air sacs found in all three species of Screamer keep these birds from being on the menu internationally, but locally some people do hunt them for food. It is probably an acquired taste and you need to know how to prepare the meat just right to make it palatable.  It is nice to report on species that are still thriving in our ever changing world and I am glad to know that local conservation effort exists for all three species on Screamers. We share examples of a black palm cockatoo named Jupiter, whose wings were rehabilitated using falconry techniques, and a 24-year-old cockatoo named Henry, who was initially clipped. Hillary emphasized the need for systematic and methodical training, avoiding forceful interactions, and using neutral or positive reinforcers. She highlighted the importance of generalizing recall to different environments and surfaces, and the potential issues of circular reinforcement.   A film that lives and dies by it's leading cast made up of a Mother, her daughter, and a magic Macaw, Tuesday is a dark fantastical tale about how people cope with terminal illness and impending Death.  Lola Petticrew really gives an amazing performance here that will charm the audience audience even more than Tuesday is able to charm Death.  Arinze Kene voices Death and does some very captivating motion capture with his portrayal of the stuttering Macaw.  The film really hits the ground running especially when you toss in the unhinged performance from Julia Louis-Dreyfus switching gears and turning this into a dark comedy.  But ultimately the film falls flat when it doesn't fully capitalize on the real world ramifications of Zora's actions, and instead lulls it's audience to very anticlimactic ending.  It's almost like the director knew exactly where he was going but didn't fully grasp where things were headed.  Streaming now on Youtube, Apple TV, FandangoAtHome, Amazon Video, etc ♦♦   Director: Daina O. Actress, writer and director Alessandra Williams co-stars in the upcoming drama, Lissa's Trip opposite Sofia Vassilieva and directed by Jeffrey Scott Lando and will premiere on Tubi, June 20. Williams portrays dual characters, Alex / Millie the Macaw and Vassilieva was the recipient as Best Actress at The First Glance Film Festival in 2023 and Vassilieva won Best Actress and Lando was the Best Director recipient at Puerto Aventuras International Film Festival in 2024. Williams also starred opposite Mark Wahlberg in Netflix's Spenser Confidential, directed by Peter Berg. She also co-starred opposite Wahlberg in the STX action thriller Mile 22. And, Williams, wrote and directed Green Kola, a short film comedy/parody about the behind-the-scenes world of today's Hollywood. In this inspired portrait of show business, she plays actress Nina Finch, America's sweetheart, opposite world renown French photographer Antoine Verglas, who plays himself and executive produced and was the recipient of Best Short Film at The Manhattan Film Festival in 2022 and will also Best Short at The Paris Independent Film Festival and London International Film Festival. Williams also wrote and directed an episode of a new dramedy series (currently untitled) from director/producer Timur Bekmambetov (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), which will be streamed via Netflix. A New York City native of Italian and Russian descent, William's professional acting career was jumpstarted when she was cast as an American dancer opposite Shahid Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in director Parmeet Sethi's Bollywood crime comedy, Badmaa$h Company. Prior to that, she had been a successful commercial actress in Manhattan booking over twenty commercial gigs. A life member of the prestigious Actor's Studio in New York and Los Angeles, where she has been studying for over ten years, Vino landed a top agent and began auditioning and winning prominent roles on television series, beginning with the recurring part of Gina Gershon's assistant, Lindsay, in How To Make it in America.

Shortly after “Idol,” David's first single, “Crush,” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The track sold more than 2 million digital copies to become double platinum. "Magic Nugget" is among the 30 finalists in Nationwide Insurance's annual Wacky Pet Names contest, which is designed to celebrate the most clever and creative names among pets recently insured by the agency. Even if the name Spix's Macaw doesn't ring a bell, you might recognize this bird. It's Blu, from Rio, the animated film! Also known as the Little Blue Macaw, the species went extinct in the wild due to hunting for the pet trade, loss of habitat, and invasive species. However, scientists raised a captive population of Spix's Macaws from the few remaining wild birds. Sacramento's Leticia Ordaz, a news anchor and native of the region, recently published the second in a series of children's books, Mr. Macaw: Lost in the Big City/El Sr. Macaw: Perdido en la Gran Ciudad.The story picks up after the end of the first book, The Adventures of Mr. Macaw/Las Aventuras del Sr. Macaw, with the protagonists traveling back to Sacramento from Mexico with their magical kite, which, following a luggage mixup, is lost in Sacramento, and the children need to find him.On this episode, Ordaz discusses the stories, why it's important to have them written in both Spanish and English, and why representation of diverse characters and authors is important, especially with children's books.

Author Leticia Ordaz may have a day job as an Emmy-nominated anchor/reporter at KCRA 3 in Sacramento, California, but that didn't stop her from starting her own publishing company to get her award-winning bilingual children's books into the world. On January 16, 1944, the submarine rescue vessel USS Macaw ran aground at Midway Atoll while attempting to tow the stranded submarine USS Flier. The Flier was pulled free six days later but another three weeks of salvage efforts plagued by rough seas and equipment failures failed to dislodge the Macaw. On February 12, enormous waves nudged the ship backward into deeper water. As night fell and the Macaw slowly sank, the twenty-two sailors on board—ship's captain Paul W. Burton, his executive officer, and twenty enlisted men—sought refuge in the pilothouse but by the following afternoon, the compartment was almost entirely flooded. Burton gave the order to open the portside door and make for the foremast. Three men succeeded but most of the others were swept overboard. Five of them died, including Burton. Three sailors from the base at Midway also lost their lives in two unauthorized rescue attempts.Today's guest is Tim Loughman, author of A Strange Whim of the Sea: The Wreck of the USS Macaw. He traces the ship's service from its launch on San Francisco Bay to its disastrous final days at Midway. It tells a war story short on combat but not on drama, a wartime tragedy in which the conflict is more interpersonal, and perhaps intrapersonal, than international. Ultimately, for Burton and the Macaw the real enemy was the sea, and in a deadly denouement, the sea won. Highlighting the underreported role auxiliary vessels played in the war, A Strange Whim of the Sea engages naval historians and students alike with a previously untold story of struggle, sacrifice, death, and survival in the World War II Pacific.

One of the world's most endangered birds the Spix's Macaw, or also known as the Little Blue Macaw, is starting to make a comeback. The plight of the Spix's Macaw was highlighted in the popular children's film, Rio. These birds once extinct in the wild, have just been released back into the wild. In this week's podcast we highlight the plight of the Spix's Macaw, what caused their decline, and who is responsible for bringing them back. Native to Brazil, the Spix's Macaw was extinct in the wild for over two decades. Yet, private collectors around the world were able to keep the species alive. Lewis checks in this week from sunny California! As Lewis heads up to San Francisco for a show, he has one question for Georgia Senate Republican candidate Hershel Walker…really? Herschel, REALLY? It's come out in the news recently that the former pro football player has paid for an abortion for a woman he was having a relationship with. Even though he's representing a party that is anti-abortion, does this recent revelation make him pro-abortion? Oh, and by the way, don't elect someone who can't contribute anything. That's no way to run a Senate. Anyway…moving on from that…if you're ever in the area, be sure to stop by Albertson's in Paso Robles, California. They have absolutely terrific wine at great prices. Unfortunately, our host didn't get to make a stop there this trip, but he highly recommends it if you're ever in the area and looking for phenomenal wine. Also on this trip, Lewis got to stay at one of his favorite places in the country, the Mission Inn in Riverside, California. At the Mission Inn, there are two beautiful parrots, a red feathered female Macaw and a striking blue feather male Macaw. After his shows in California this weekend, Lewis has a little time off and is heading back to the Palm Desert (where he was at the start of the week) to meet up with some friends and maybe even play some golf again. Last time Lewis played golf out there, it was so hot and just felt like the sun was right above your head.
