Well, this one is certainly a blast from the past! On this episode, we are extremely excited to welcome journalist and author, Amy Sutherland! Chris first met Amy 21 years ago (!) when she came to spend time with him and his classmates at Moorpark College's (then-named) Exotic Animal Training and Management Program (aka "EATM") to do research for what would become a book about the program (Kicked, Bitten, and Scratched: Life and Lessons at the World's Premier School for Exotic Animal Trainers). A few years later, this lead to a widely-acclaimed New York Times article about how Amy applied the animal training principles she'd learned to her husband, which shortly thereafter lead to another amazing book about the power of using good operant conditioning techniques with the fellow humans in our lives (What Shamu Taught Me About Life, Love, and Marriage: Lessons for People from Animals and Their Trainers). We had a great time catching up with Amy to chat about what it was like getting a crash course in "our world," getting her perspective on the importance of what we do, and asking us some great questions about our hopes for the future of the field.  Shout outs in this episode: NEI's own, Steve Martin! If you have a shout-out you'd like us to share, a question or a topic you'd like us to discuss, or a suggestion for a guest we should have on the show, let us know at podcast@naturalencounters.com! --------------------------------- This episode is brought to you by Magic Mind! How much does it cost you to walk a dog or stay overnight in a client's home? While we typically consider expenses such as gas, insurance, and experience, what else should we include? Jill Jaffe, owner of "Fur Paws' Sake," joins the show to discuss why she's so passionate about offering "almost overnights" instead of actual overnights to her clients. Jill draws on the lessons she learned from her spirited little pup, Lily, emphasizing that running a business involves more than just financial costs. Main topics: From freakout to freedom Stopped overnights Understanding the costs Giving alternative options Main takeaway: Don't let clients or your business dictate what you should sacrifice in your own life. About our guest: Since childhood, Jill Jaffe has had a deep passion for animals and a strong desire to provide them with professional care. Despite her career as an executive administrative assistant in the entertainment and financial banking industries, fate led her to follow her true calling. Before her corporate journey, Jill eagerly immersed herself in animal care while in college. She began pet sitting for neighbors and referrals, gaining extensive experience with a variety of domesticated pets and even helping rehabilitate wildlife. Her volunteer work at the Los Angeles Wildlife Waystation in the Los Angeles Mountains included caring for orphaned baby raccoons, opossums, squirrels, crows, turkey vultures, sparrows, and finches. During her time at Moorpark College from 1992 to 1994, she studied diverse courses within the Exotic Animal Training and Management (EATM) program, focusing on exotic animal behavior and diversity, particularly big cats and primates at the school's zoo. After facing two corporate layoffs, Jill decided it was time for a change. In the summer of 2013, she founded Fur Paws Sake Pet Sitting and Dog Walking. She quickly acquired CPR and Pet First Aid training, joined the Pet Sitters International Association, and secured business liability coverage and bonding. These measures assured her clients that their beloved pets would always be in capable hands. Starting from scratch, Jill built her client base through social media, a website for online visibility, and traditional networking efforts to spread the word about her exceptional pet care services. She cherishes the opportunity to earn the trust of every pet owner and takes great pride in delivering top-notch service in the pet sitting and dog walking industry. With over 30 years of experience, Jill has been responsible for a wide range of animals, serving friends, extended family, neighbors, and referrals. Her responsibilities include daily feedings, administering medication, potty breaks, cleaning small pet enclosures, watering plants, conducting routine home security checks, and providing companionship to pets. Pet owners consistently appreciate her meticulous attention to detail and unwavering dedication, knowing that their non-human companions are in good hands and their homes are well-maintained upon their return. Why don't more kids learn about financial literacy and entrepreneurship in school? Why are these not part of the core curriculum from kindergarten through 12th grade? Some states (like Iowa!) and local school districts do have these requirements, but way too many do not. The result is adults who don't know how to save and don't understand basic financial principles. Stop the madness! In our most recent episode, we are blowing the lid off this challenge, and bringing on the solutions! We discovered Junior Achievement last year and are in awe of how it answers so many of our concerns about financial literacy in the classroom. Our guest, Collin Lane tells us all about how JA brings experiential learning about financial principles—from finance, jobs, business, and entrepreneurship —to classrooms across the country, and how they've been doing it for over 100 years. Collin is in his second year as the director of programs for Junior Achievement of Central Iowa. Before his time with JA, he spent nearly 14 years in public education for Des Moines public schools. He taught fifth grade for seven years and was an elementary tech teacher. He served as Instructional Technology Coordinator as a member of the district-wide curriculum team. Collin has his BA in Elementary Education from Moorpark College and his Master's degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Northern Iowa. what you will learn in this episode: Why we need to prepare our kids with financial literacy How Junior Achievement has been helping young entrepreneurs for 100+ years The kinds of financial literacy and entrepreneurship programs JA provides How kids can gain an immersive experience in business that they will remember the rest of their lives Teaching kids beyond basics to get at deeper principles of financial well-being Why school districts should include financial literacy as part of the core curriculum from K-12 How to take financial literacy to the next level with college-age young people Why mentorship is the cheat code of life

Meet your trainers Laura Bourhenne & Kim Rinehardt discuss how they met and how each of them got into dog training. Laura graduated from Moorpark College's Exotic Animal Training & Management Program where she learned about animal husbandry, Operant Conditioning, Classical Conditioning and everything else that was helpful in reaching her goals of becoming an animal trainer. From there she took a seasonal job at the Animal Show at Universal Studios. Shortly after beginning that job she received a call from a family in Santa Monica asking her to train their pot-bellied pig. They also had dogs, and then got a few birds as well. Thus, began her training pets for private clients. Once her stint at Universal Studios was up she continued building her business focusing on dog and pig behavior so she could help people live a rewarding life with their pets. Laura has competed in agility, nosework and dabbled in herding to better understand those instincts (also just for fun). Laura earned her certification through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, is an Associate Certified Dog Behavior Consultant through the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, and is a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers. Kim Rinehardt's life with dogs began as a groomer and obedience competitor. Her obvious natural instincts led others to begin asking her for help with their own dogs. This started her on the path to becoming a professional dog trainer. During her dog training career she also worked at a dog rehab facility where she worked with dogs in the pool to help them gain strength and confidence. Kim has competed in grooming competitions, agility, nosework and she too, has dabbled in herding. Kim earned her certification through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, is a Supporting Member of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, and is a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers.
