The Nostalgia Test Podcast

Dan, Manny, & Billy put the 1993 action/drama Free Willy to the ultimate test--THE NOSTALGIA TEST! “[They abused a whale] to make a movie about whale awareness [...] You fucking basically murdered [a whale] in the making of [Free Willy].” -Billy Okay everyone, this was a weird journey back for us because no one knew what to expect from Free Willy. Kristi Gravrock is a long time animal trainer having worked with dogs, horses, orcas, cats, dolphins and more. Her passion for training goes back to her early childhood pets before her first horse. Today, when she isn't competing in dressage, she uses her decades of experience with zoological species to train service dogs and mini horses.  While there are many similarities to training dolphins for swim programs and dogs or minis for hospital and nursing home visits, one key difference is the people involved. According to Kristi, unlike working in a zoo environment with other trainers, most lay people react unpredictably around animals  and don't know much about training.  So to be successful in the service animal space visiting people who are often frail with serious health issues, animals must be extremely well desensitized to the unexpected. This emphasis on desensitization is particularly important working with prey species like equines. Animal Care Software

We are going to talk about an old school term in weight management of free flying and ambassador birds, and that is ad lib weight. Another term might be trap weight or base weight. Reason why this is old school is that for some people implies your bird has this same reference weight throughout their lives, regardless of muscle tone, seasonality, and age and it can be downright dangerous. There are many issues with ad lib weights, such as how we figure it out without coercion or restraint, the assumption that all birds can achieve steady state, and that some birds come from a place of food trauma. Not to mention that use prescriptive numbers to assess health can be problematic. Let's level up! We look at many different metrics that help us cross reference a dynamic set of reference weights across the seasons that help us identify healthy birds and high welfare. If you know us, we are going to discuss with you actionable, practical science based training tips that help you level up your training program that you can put into place right away. Many grapple with bridging the chasm between theory and practice. If you've been there, stressing over how to implement new knowledge, you're not alone - therefore In this episode, you, the dedicated listener, will unravel the subtle layers of one such area - 'assent' in animal training.  Meet Your Guide: Hannah D. Dr. Layng is a behavior analyst with over fifty years of experience in the experimental and applied analysis of behavior. His most recent book is “Nonlinear Contingency Analysis: Going Beyond Cognition and Behavior in Clinical Practice. I could go on with a long list of Joe's professional credentials, but instead I'll say that Joe was one of the regular presenters at the Art and Science of Animal Training conference. That's where I first met him. Joe's talks were always for me the highlight of the conference in part because he prompted me to look at familiar concepts through a different lens. I always think of Joe as better than google. During any conversation he'll rattle off at least half a dozen references that need to be explored. You'll discover very quickly what I mean by that in the first part of this episode. Joe has our guest before. We've talked about contingency adduction, the effect of schedules on social behavior, and one of my favorite topics to discuss with Joe, degrees of freedom. If those topics sound too academic for your tastes, don't worry. Joe is a wonderful story teller. In every conversation Joe has left us with a teaser. In this case he begins with a teaser. Our plan was to talk about reinforcement schedules, but Joe jumped in chatting about a topic he's been exploring recently - that of private experiences. Typically, I edit out the conversations we have when we first sign into zoom and we're getting ourselves organized. In this case Joe's comments were too much fun not to share. So yes, we are going to talk about schedules of reinforcement in this episode, but first we're going to indulge in a journey down a couple of interesting rabbit holes.

Our two favorite subjects, owls and raising ambassadors. Owls are considered flagship species, which means that while they may not necessarily be directly endangered, they are species chosen to raise support for biodiversity conservation in a given place or social context. This means that due to their widespread appeal, they have the capacity to draw in an audience to more complex issues related to their ecosystems and less charismatic components. What this also means is that they can act as flagship individuals for education programs. We often say people come for the owls and stay for the vultures. But raising an owl for life as ambassador is challenging, even to be a glove bird. We want the bird's presence to reflect the care and expertise that the organization requires. In this episode we discuss what this looks like in the beginning stages and how the many mistakes we made led us to our mission of raising ambassadors over ten species of native and non-native owls. You can sign up for the Masterclass of How to Raise an Ambassador Owl and you can also find our exclusive, limited seats only 4 week live mentorship, Train with Me - Owl Ambassador Training and learn the ins and outs of this intricate and incredibly important process.
