Market volatility continues to threaten the advisor-client relationship. At the end of the day, the advisor's role is not just about managing a client's wealth—it's helping navigate experiences and surprises. In this episode, ABAI's Ken Haman explains why the main reason clients hire an advisor is to manage their own emotions. He'll also dive into how advisors can go beyond wealth management to empower clients' financial futures. In addition, exploring the emotional impact of advisor interactions and how they influence client experiences—both expected and unexpected, and mastering the art of reducing client anxiety, boosting confidence and navigating volatility Also in this episode, the AllianceBernstein Digital Coach – see practice management solutions for advisor success: abfunds.com/go/digitalcoach DISCLAIMER Note to All Readers: The information contained here reflects the views of AllianceBernstein L.P. or its affiliates and sources it believes are reliable as of the date of this podcast. I'm very much honored to be joined by Drs. Carol Pilgrim and Tim Hackenberg! Listeners will recognize Tim from his very informative and popular episode on Token Economies. If you haven't heard that one, I highly recommend that you go back and check out Session 205, as well as read Tim's review paper in JABA on the same topic. Dr. Carol Pilgrim is professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. It would take me several minutes to get through all of her contributions and accomplishments that she's imparted to the field. Here are just a few: Dr. Pilgrim has served as president of its major organizations, including ABAI (as well as its Southeastern ABA chapter), the Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis, and Division 25 (Behavior Analysis) of the American Psychological Association. She also served as secretary of the Society for the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, and as a board member of that organization (note: for more background, please see here). As you'll hear, Tim and Carol reached out to me to talk about the upcoming conference that they are co-chairing. It's ABAI's 2024 Theory and Philosophy Conference. It's happening on October 28th and 29th. The onsite location is Chicago, and it will be available virtually too. While we did spend some time talking about the conference, we spent the majority of the episode discussing the importance of understanding Behavior Analysis the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of Behavior Analysis at a deep level. Specifically, we touched on: Why these topics are essential to graduate training in Behavior Analysis. Distinguishing Theory and Philosophy from Concepts and Principles. The distinctions between Theory and Meta-theory. What assumptions guide the science of behavior (and science more generally). Some examples of findings in the basic laboratory that have made their way into everyday practice. In this discussion, we also talk about this process happening in reverse too. And of course we do get in to the details about the conference itself, including how it's organized, what role this conference serves amongst the many training opportunities that exist, and much more. In short, they make their pitch for folks to come check it out. Lastly, one of the topics we touched on that I'd like to return to down the road is the epistemology of Behavior Analysis, and how that how knowing both how and why we know what we know, and distinguishing this from other disciplines, can help us interact more successfully with practitioners from other fields. Lastly, for disclosure's sake, ABAI is not sponsoring this content. However, in furthering the goal of being a transparent media outlet, I am very much open to this
Hey everybody I hope you're having a great summer so far, or whatever season it happens to be whenever you listen to this episode. Some of the things I've been doing recently is going back through the behavioral observations archives and giving episodes a second or third listen. One of those episodes was Session 193 that I published in July 2022, and my guest was Dr. Claire Saint Peter. In that episode we talked about the constructional approach, as it were, and how it relates to solving behavior problems. This topic has been getting a lot of attention lately. When I was at ABAI in Philadelphia a few weeks ago, I attended several talks on the constructional approach, which prompted me to listen to this episode again. And when I did listen to this episode for a second time I felt that there were so many really helpful pieces of information that I wanted to republish it. What I did with this episode is essentially started after the part in which Claire talked about her background and getting into behavior analysis. Now if you want to go back and listen to that story, and I think it is a good story by the way as it's a bit of a microcosm of the history of applied behavior analysis, you can certainly do so. However, for the purposes of brevity, I decided just cut out that introductory section so the overall experience is a bit more focused, especially for those of us who are listening to this for a second, third, or fourth time. With that said, I really hope you listen to this episode and it's entirety there are so many great nuggets have information. Although we talk about the application of the constructional approach to a student in a school setting, I am sure that you will make connections to all sorts of applications. I will also make this episode eligible for a continuing education unit, as I have been doing with many older episodes as well. So if you are looking to get caught up on your continuing education, go to behavioralobservations.com to see the nearly 60 episodes we have available for your continuing education. The last thing I'll say about this episode is that this is not the last thing I'll say about the constructional approach. I guess I'm saying that out loud for some accountability, because of said this before, but I want to have some other guests on to talk about this because I think it's an interesting way to look at behavior analysis and it's ability to address problems of social importance. In this episode, the hosts and Dr. Rajaraman engage in a conversation about trauma-informed care and the application of behavior analysis. They emphasize the importance of considering individuals' potential traumatic experiences and question the ethical implications of contributing to additional trauma in the name of interventions. The hosts advocate for a kinder and gentler approach, highlight the negative health outcomes associated with multiple traumatic experiences, and challenge narrow definitions of trauma. They emphasize the significance of social validity, the lived experiences of individuals, and the need to prioritize well-being and autonomy in interventions. Overall, they stress the importance of listening to and believing individuals when they communicate their traumas and adapting interventions accordingly. BCBA Flor De Amelia (Lizette) Hoffman is a mom of two and we met at ABAI. She was inspired to get into the field because of her daughter, who is now 13 years old. Lizette's daughter was diagnosed with autism at 18 months but knew something was wrong as early as 8 months when she began to experience seizures. Lizette struggled to find answers for her daughter, and she shares what her journey was like as a young mom. ABA therapy helped greatly, and Lizette wanted to learn all about the techniques to practice them on her own. Today, she works with several families who have the same passion and willingness to learn.Lizette became an RBT and then got her masters in ABA. After being told to “stay in her lane” at her daughter's school, she got a master's in special education while pregnant with her third child. “We don't ever need to remove reinforcement from the learner to achieve success.” Maasa and Sean ABAI 2022 Many behavior analysts and animal trainers are familiar with the concept of differential reinforcement and planned ignoring- an undesired behavior occurs, and attention is removed until a desired behavior emerges then attention is delivered. But this quote from ABAI 2022 has resonated with our ATBA team. Has consideration been taken about the potential long-term emotional effects that could occur when attention is completely removed? For organisms with complex verbal repertoires, it can be “easy” to talk about why the attention/reinforcer is being removed, but many behavior analysts work with learners who struggle to express emotional discomfort in ways that can be understood by the public. In this LIVE talk we meet with Maasa and Sean (of CAAWT and other cool things) to talk about the Constructional Approach, shelter dogs, and animal welfare. Constructional Approach to Animal Welfare and Training is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide free training to individuals and organizations that need training and cannot afford it. Their utilization of the Constructional Approach demonstrates how incorporating a level of compassion by implementing a conjugate reinforcement schedule can increase skill acquisition, improve relationships and rapport, and dare we say, achieve behavioural cusps that may have a life-long impact on the learner's quality of life. Learning Objectives: 1. Describe the critical components of the Constructional Approach and how it is different from traditional approaches. 2. Describe conjugate reinforcement schedules and provide examples. 3. Examine the relationship between empathy, compassion, and the Constructional Approach Take Aways- your bite-sized educational noms - Being “Constructional” isn't a procedure rather it is a way of programming for the success of the learner and their environment for long-term by using the critical features of: Current Relevant Repertoire; Terminal Goals; Systematic Approximations to Terminal Goal(s); Tracking the Performance Data - Conjugate reinforcement occurs when the magnitude of reinforcement is delivered based on the behavior emitted and its approximation to the target behavior. It's an ebb and flow of increase and decrease as the behavior is shaped up. At no point does reinforcement have to be removed from the learner. Consider the potential for an extinction burst; conjugate reinforcement can mitigate an increase in undesirable behavior. Maasa and Sean provide touch and affection towards shelter dogs and can micro-shape “pick me” behaviors simply by responding to the dog and offering more or less touch (one or two hands for example). - When reinforcement is removed, there is often a high probability of other behaviors emerging to gain the desired reinforcement, critical consequence. It can leave the learner in a state of distress and damage rapport and trust with the instructor. By using a constructional approach, providing conjugate reinforcement and the critical consequence, the learner is more likely to learn and maintain the responses, while enjoying the learning experience and building skills that will further improve their quality of life. Barbara Heidenreich is an expert exotic animal trainer. We met Barbara in Boston at ABAI and we were fascinated by the way she uses ABA and behavioral principles in animal training. Barbara specializes in working with animals and she works mostly with zoos and facilities that care for exotic species. She also works with veterinary professionals and conservationists. Veterinary medicine is now becoming more focused on cooperative care, reducing animal stress, and making the animal care experience fear-free. Behavioral analysis fits perfectly with this new focus, and like traditional ABA, it's centered around compassion.Just like with humans, when animals exhibit behavioral issues, there's always a reason behind them, and Barbara applies the science of ABA in her profession. Also, like people, it's always important to understand a particular species' habits and tendencies to help come up with the best behavioral solutions. She also shares a great story about correcting problematic behavior in a rare bird in New Zealand that you won't want to miss. What's Inside:Barbara's journey and how she developed her career. How the ABA principles can be applied to animal trainingStories from Barbara's experience working with animals.Mentioned In This Episode:HowToABA.com/joinHow to ABA on YouTubeFind us on FacebookFollow us on InstagramAnimalTrainingFundamentals.com

Get .1 ASHA CEU hereEpisode SummaryHey overworked SLP - feeling like you want to find a rock to crawl under for a minute or two? Burnout is a topic that hits close to home for me as an SLP of 15 years. In some ways, I think I started to feel that burn even before I got my CCC's. Why are we and others in the “helping professions” so much more likely to experience burnout than others braving the workforce? This week, burnout expert, Dr. Julie Slowiak, shares her own personal experience with overwhelm and under-joy in the workplace, and offers SLP's the strategies we need to recognize burnout and to address it head on. Do you find yourself critical or cynical at work? Perhaps you're not looking forward to your day-to-day grind, or you are consistently not meeting expectations (your own or those placed upon you). Whatever the sign, you might be experiencing or rapidly approaching burnout, which not only negatively impacts your personal health and happiness, but also your professional performance. Tune in to learn how to spot burnout and to learn why it might be happening. You'll also gain some mindful self-care practices to deal with burnout as Dr. Slowiak challenges the misconceived notion of self-care as just a manicure and bubble bath. Pause today, tune it, and take an hour to discover how you can hit that optimal work life flow, feel better, and be the SLP you want to be for those students and clients you hold so dear.Course AccommodationsThe transcript for this course is provided below. As December comes to a close, we're spending a lot of time planning for 2022. We're really excited about some new initiatives, and we wanted to share our plans! Our members have been fabulous, and we are so thankful for each and every one of you.The first thing we're doing in the new year is a free, three-day ABA virtual event, coming up in February (the 8th through 10th). The pandemic has proven that virtual meetings work and it's such a great way to get people together to share information. You'll hear from experts in the field and have the opportunity to earn CEUs. The ABAI conference is in May this year and we'll be there doing a workshop on writing ABA programs. We're hoping it's in person and excited to meet you live. In our membership community, we're looking for more ways for you to engage with one another. We love that we built a platform where we can all support each other and want to expand on it. We also welcomed a new member to our team who's going to be helping us with supervision and mentorship support. She'll be going through specific topics and cohorts, and we think it's such a great resource to offer. Spots are limited, so if you're interested, check out the link below to learn how to apply. If you're interested in being on our podcast or have a topic or question you'd like to submit, let us know! Dual certified SLP-BCBAs are rare in our therapist community, so many providers find it very difficult when collaborating with other professionals who overlap the scope of care. I am discussing a great professional article that tackles this hot topic with my former supervisee and fellow SLP and BCBA, Eleyonzettah E. Bonilla. The article, Interprofessional Collaborative Practice Between Behavior Analysts, and Speech-Language Pathologists, is available on ABAI.For many SLPs or BCABs, it is difficult to see when other people are doing what you are trained to do. It can often feel like you're being encroached on. This is bound to happen when many times the care requires an overlap. Eleyonzettah and I talk about how crucial it is to embrace this overlap. The article actually discusses the importance of highlighting the strengths of the different providers. When working with two providers who have knowledge about multiple different points of care, you have an advantage.Training can be a great aspect of collaboration. When working with other providers, you can facilitate role extension and role release. While you may not ask another provider to teach a skill from scratch, you can release an extension of practicing a skill by training the other provider on what you need from the learner. We do not own these skills, the skills are there as points for teaching. When facilitating a collaborative relationship, professionalism is key. Eleyonzettah and I both relate to having poor encounters with other professionals. We feel that many other SLP or BCBAs also encounter other professionals they do not care for, this does not mean every encounter has to be negative. It is important to keep language and communication clear and productive. When you're speaking with another provider during collaborative work, the patient should be first. You are a team with the goal of helping the learner.Discussing this secret problem in the ABA community, Eleyonzettah and I kept coming back to a common theme. The child, learner, or patient comes first! Our job is to facilitate learning and quality of life for our learners and collaborating with other professionals can sometimes be the only way to do that!I enjoyed this discussion with Elenyonzettah greatly and it is my hope that you found some tips or beneficial information in today's episode that you can put into practice right away! What's Inside:SLP and BCBA Collaboration. How to work with people from different fields and expertise.Translating research into everyday practice.Putting the child or learner at the forefront of the work.
I am planting my flag on the side of ABA Reform with this episode. It's the release of our highlights reel from our ABAI symposium, Toward Applied Behavior Analysis Reform: What It Means to "Do No Harm." Generally speaking, people don't go into a service profession hoping to hurt other people, but we do need to constantly be checking ourselves. When we look back over the long history of medicine, we can point to countless instances where harm was done out of ignorance because we don't know what we don't know. But this does not excuse us from the responsibility of constantly challenging our previously held assumptions to see if they hold up under scrutiny. We have to start a conversation between the professional community, and the only people who can tell us how we might be causing unintentional harm: Autistic Adults. This episode includes 5 different speakers from the Symposium titled Toward Applied Behavior Analysis Reform: What It Means to "Do No Harm" at the ABAI 2021 Convention. @ 4:10 - 16:00 Intro w/ Madison Holcomb (Camp Encourage) "A Too-Short, Very Incomplete Introduction to Masking: The Practice, Effectiveness, Costs and Ethics of Performing Neurotypicality"@ 16:00 - 22:15 Rosie Rossi (BIOS ABA Consultants, LLC) "Checking Blind Spots: Navigating Neurotypical Standards of Social Skills as it Relates to Neurodivergent Clients"@ 22:15 - 32:45 Katie Murray (The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, BIOS ABA Consultants)"Current BCBA Training: What Did I Just Learn?"@ 34:03 - 48:00 Amy Bodkin (Amy Bodkin Consulting LLC)"Towards a More Ethical and Developmental Approach to Applied Behavior Analysis"@ 48:00 - 59:54 Jamine Layne Dettmering (The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, BIOS ABA, National Louis University)You can download the entire symposium audio recording as well as a PDF of each participant's slides here: amybodkin.com/podcast-episode-6To help further reform in this field, I have created a course for professionals titled "Towards a More Ethical and Developmental Approach to Applied Behavior Analysis." Full show notes and original video can be found at https://www.thedailyba.com/tce SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: In an attempt to be reflective, responsive, and responsible, we chose to remove two episodes: 1) "Reflections from ABAI and The Lack of Operational Definitions | TCE #008" and "Listener Mail: Tired of the Bullshit & a Follow-up to Privilege and Culture" from our platform. The controversial exchange has always been about having tough, transparent, and controversial discussions about sensitive topics, with the goal of presenting multiple perspectives. Sometimes we present our own personal opinions, sometimes we play Devil's advocate, and sometimes we present perspectives that are common, yet unpopular and silent in the public domains of the community. After listening and learning over the past year from advocates, experts, and countless other resources and information, as featured in episode #21 on Cultural Awareness, we recognized that those episodes are not a valuable contribution to the conversations today and in fact may result in unintended pain. Our goals and hopes are to engage and push the conversation forward rather than backward and therefore be part of the solution. Therefore for clarity, we affirm that black lives matter, social, racial, economic injustice are the challenges and issues of our time and change only comes from joining in solidarity with those who are most harshly impacted while recognizing what role each of us plays. We are open to and have extended the option to have these conversations with potential guests and hope to feature them in future episodes. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thecontroversialexchange/message
