When a young lady approaches Sherlock Holmes looking for help in finding out what happened to her father when he disappeared 10 years earlier, both Holmes and Watson are sent on a mission involving stolen treasure, service in colonial India and a secret pact among four ex-convicts. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Sir Arthur Conan Doyle described how he was commissioned to write the story over a dinner with Joseph Marshall Stoddart, managing editor of the American publication Lippincotts Monthly Magazine, at the Langham Hotel in London on 30 August 1889. Stoddart wanted to produce an English version of Lippincott's with a British editor and British contributors. The dinner was also attended by Oscar Wilde , who eventually contributed The Picture of Dorian Gray to the July 1890 issue. Doyle discussed what he called this "golden evening" in his 1924 Autobiographies/ Memories and Adventures. The novel first appeared in the February 1890 edition of Lippincott's Monthly Magazine as The Sign of the Four; or The Problem of the Sholtos, appearing in both London and Philadelphia. The British edition of the magazine originally sold for a shilling , and the American for 25 cents. Surviving copies are now worth several thousand dollars. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ang189/support

Forbes Contributor on Cyber Defense National Security and Board Strategy, named CEO of the Year 2020 by CEO Monthly Magazine, Mr. Cetnarski is a national & cybersecurity strategist and Founder & CEO of Cyber Nation Central®, a global cyber defense ecosystem bringing:(1) breach-prevention-focused cultural transformation training from the Board-down, (2) incident response capabilities to even the most complex cyberbreaches, and (3) investment capital into cybertechnologies. Through the ecosystem's breach prevention training, Mr. Cetnarski has helped strengthen the cybersecurity of hundreds of teams globally from those of UN officials and heads of state to global CEOs, Board Directors, investors, and entrepreneurs.Mr. Cetnarski brings nearly two decades of experience as cybersecure-nation-building global leader and advisor to industry and government leaders globally; as cybersecurity public-private partnership innovator; Board Director and CEO; turnaround executive and as cybersecurity technology mentor and investor; and speaker and author in the areas of cybersecurity future-tech innovation, defense, regulatory policy, and diplomacy.Previously an investment banker with UBS technology, defense & real estate groups as well as Chairman and CEO of a global tech & hospitality venture and US Congressional staffer, he holds 3 Ivy League degrees from Harvard, Wharton, and UPenn, and an Honors BA in Economics from the University of Chicago. His global viewpoint has been forged by living and working nearly a third of his life across each of US, Europe, and Asia, thus bringing a highly global perspective to the challenges of cyberspace defense. In this episode Steve and Andrzej discuss:Resilience and mindset Cybersecurity is all about behavior Cyberdefense is everyone's responsibility Supporting an increasingly better version of you Key Takeaways: The journey towards success is one that is filled with a lot of difficulty. Which is why you'll need a strong mindset that is built up out of resilience. It might surprise you that most conversations about cybersecurity are not about technology, but about behavior. Most security breaches are not caused by cyber insecure technologies, but cyber insecure behaviors. Cyber defense isn't only the tech department's responsibility, it's the responsibility of every member in the organization. Every member is a potential breach, so it's important that everyone is in the same page. If you are an entrepreneur, you have to be an optimist. Business is not for the faint of heart. You also have to have a routine that supports an increasingly better version of you everyday. “The weather outside doesn't matter, it's what your weather inside you is and how you look at every single thing.” - Andrzej Cetnarski Connect with Andrzej Cetnarski:Twitter: https://twitter.com/ACetnarskiWebsite: https://cybernationcentral.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrzejcetnarski/Email: enquiry@cybernationcentral.com Connect with Steve and Jason:LinkedIn: Jason or SteveWebsite: Rewire, Inc.: Transformed Thinking Email: grow@rewireinc.com Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine TallaAudio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. The Picture of Dorian Gray is the only novel by the Irish writer Oscar Wilde. A first version appeared in 1890 in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine from Philadelphia, in 1891 the London publisher Ward, Lock and Co. published the today known, revised and expanded version in book form. The novel, which was considered disreputable at the time, was also the subject of the indecency trial against Wilde. The main character, the rich and handsome Dorian Gray, possesses a portrait that ages instead of him and into which the traces of his sins are inscribed. While Gray becomes increasingly immoderate and cruel, his exterior nevertheless remains young and immaculately beautiful. The novel is considered Oscar Wilde's prose magnum opus. Themes include the morality of sensuality and hedonism in Victorianism and the decadence of the English upper class. In addition, the plot and the incorporated art remarks can be read as both a proclamation and a critique of aestheticism, a fin de siècle literary movement.(From Wikipedia).Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Paul is joined once more by Mateo Pallamary for his unique take on the four key areas of relationships: General love, romantic love, love of self and love of a source, or a higher power. Can you make sense of, control or contain love by putting it into a mind model? KEY TAKEAWAYS Relationships means how you relate to someone that you are connecting with. We all relate to different people in different ways and is unique depending on the energy that you both receive and present. The more I've gone toward general love the more I have become peaceful and zen-like. The closer I get to the centre, the less passion and emotion is there and the more calm it is. We come into the world as essence, being heart-centred and helpless, we observe the world and the personalities around us and develop our own personality as a tool to function in that world, which means we inherit wounds as well as strengths from them. Our personalities get so strong that we begin to think we are our personalities rather than the creator of them. The goal is to get back to being essence/heart-centred. Awareness is the expansion of consciousness and the more conscious you become the more aware you become, the more aware you become the more you see and this is the ‘Power Path' in shamanism BEST MOMENTS ‘Simplicity is the essence of genius' ‘Love isn't something that can be put into a convenient box' ‘Listen to that still, small voice within' ‘Integrity should be rule number one in life' VALUABLE RESOURCES Paul's Story: Emerging From The Forest (UK): https://www.amazon.co.uk/Emerging-Forest-Pain-Purpose-Mastering/dp/1719373272 Paul's Story: Emerging From The Forest (USA): https://www.amazon.com/Emerging-Forest-Pain-Purpose-Mastering/dp/1719373272 Mastering The Game Of Life Book (UK): https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mastering-Game-Life-Paul-Lowe/dp/1782227679 Mastering The Game Of Life Book (USA): https://www.amazon.com/Mastering-Game-Life-Paul-Lowe/dp/1782227679 Speaking From Our Hearts Books: Volumes 1-3 (Available on Amazon) World Game-Changers Group ABOUT THE GUEST Matt (Matteo) Pallamary frequently visits the mountains, deserts, and jungles of North, Central, and South America pursuing his studies of shamanism. Paul is joined by special guest Mateo Pallamary to discuss love and if there's a simple way to describe and define such a small word which has massive implications and meanings – especially if you can do it through songs and music or shamanism. KEY TAKEAWAYS We're all living our story, we can't change what's going on in the world outside of us but we can control how we interpret it and how we react to it and in the end the definition of awareness is being present and in the moment. Which matters most: time, love or money? They're all energy which can be manipulated and mastered through shamanism. Becoming vulnerable is a massive challenge because if you do that you may get judged or people may intentionally hurt you, but you have to realise that it's not you, they're projecting onto you. You can't have light without dark. You have to experience both of them in life to find the centre and, in fact, they enhance each other. BEST MOMENTS ‘True love, like the Sun's energy, is unconditional.' ‘The heart has a greater density of receptors than the brain.' ‘The essence of love is pure unconditional openness and giving.' ‘Following you heart is the path home.' This is an episode in our weekly series titled 'Primary Source Tuesday.' Each Tuesday we have a reading from a particularly interesting historical item. Sometimes it's a historical tidbit that wasn't quite beefy enough to make a full column out of; other times, an especially interesting old newspaper article; frequently it's a short story from one of the frontier literary magazines that thrived in Oregon at the end of the 19th century. Today it's an uncannily relevant editorial written by the editors of Pacific Monthly Magazine, the Portland-based literary magazine that was one of the precursors to today's Sunset Magazine.

Sometimes it's a historical tidbit that wasn't quite beefy enough to make a full column out of; other times, an especially interesting old newspaper article; frequently it's a short story from one of the frontier literary magazines that thrived in Oregon at the end of the 19th century. Today it's what appears to be a very short shortstory by Dr. Walter Cayley Belt, a physician then practicing in Newport. It's not entirely clear whether this story is fiction, or an actual reminiscence from pioneer days in the frozen Canadian prairie. The story was published in the January 1899 issue of Pacific Monthly Magazine, the Portland-based literary magazine that later merged with another title to become Sunset Magazine.
The Refugees: A Tale of Two Continents,’Conan Doyle's fourth historical novel, was first published by Harper's Monthly Magazine in the first half of 1893. It explores the events surrounding Louis XIV's Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 and how this impacts on a small group of Huguenots who are sent, as Conan Doyle put it, “flying like leaves before a hurricane.” You can read the novel here: https://www.arthur-conan-doyle.com/index.php?title=The_Refugees The episode can be heard here: http://doingsofdoyle.podbean.com/. Welcome to Campfire Classics, a Literary Comedy Podcast!! We're back with another story, three more crimes (one of them a lie), and a whole lot of juvenile banter. This week is March's "True Crimes and a Lie," but it is also our first story from one of the great American writers, Herman Melville. This story was specially selected by Heather for Ken to read specifically because of its title, "The Lightning-Rod Man." It is a wild ride with a couple of dramatic characters and a shocking number of jokes about the male reproductive organ. Or maybe that's just our hosts reading something into it that wasn't there. Regardless, it is a fantastic story, and along the way our hosts discuss the Great White Dick, green glass balls, and...yeah, it really is mostly euphemisms. Though there is also a surprising amount of geography. "The Lightning-Rod Man" was first published in Putnam's Monthly Magazine, August 1854, and despite being one of Melville's lesser known stories is a literary gem. Kevin from The Jury Room guest as he tries his hand at "True Crimes and a Lie." He's a great guest, but more importantly a great host of his own podcast, so check him out at JuryRoomPodcast.com So sit back, light a fire (or even a candle), grab a drink, and enjoy.

The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde - Book 1, Part 1 Title: The Picture of Dorian Gray Overview: The Picture of Dorian Gray is a philosophical novel by Oscar Wilde. A shorter novella-length version was published in the July 1890 issue of the American periodical Lippincott's Monthly Magazine. A revised and extended edition was published in April 1891. Revisions include changes in character dialogue as well as the addition of the preface, more scenes and chapters, and Sibyl Vane's brother, James Vane. The story revolves around a portrait of Dorian Gray painted by Basil Hallward, a friend of Dorian's and an artist infatuated with Dorian's beauty. Through Basil, Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton and is soon enthralled by the aristocrat's hedonistic worldview: that beauty and sensual fulfillment are the only things worth pursuing in life. Newly understanding that his beauty will fade, Dorian expresses the desire to sell his soul, to ensure that the picture, rather than he, will age and fade. The wish is granted, and Dorian pursues a libertine life of varied amoral experiences while staying young and beautiful; all the while, his portrait ages and visually records every one of Dorian's sins. Wilde's only novel was subject to much controversy and criticism in its time but has come to be recognized as a classic of gothic literature. Here's a three-part podcast looking at "A Christmas Sermon", an unconventional Christmas essay that appeared in the December, 1888, issue of Scribner's Monthly Magazine. In part 1 we get some background.
In this episode, I’m talking with Texas Monthly BBQ Editor Daniel Vaughn. As many of you know, Daniel contributes BBQ restaurant reviews and cultural history articles that go way beyond what you might call typical food blogging. I’ve followed his writing since purchasing his 2013 book The Prophets of Smoked Meat: A Journey Through Texas Barbecue. Daniel’s book covers all of the varied styles of BBQ cooked across the great state of Texas in a way that showcases the various ways BBQ is prepared but, more importantly, shares the stories and history behind how those styles developed. In this regard, it has a style that’s very similar to the North Carolina BBQ book written by John Shelton Reed and his wife Dale Volberg Reed, called Holy Smoke: The Big Book of North Carolina Barbecue. As I listened to the recording of my interview with Daniel Vaughn, I realized just how much ground we covered a relatively short amount of time. Here are just a few things you won’t want to miss from my talk with Daniel Vaughn: Daniel’s friendship with Anthony Bourdain during and after the publishing of Prophets of Smoked Meat BBQ restaurants that deserve more press than they get The impact Daniel's Texas Monthly BBQ reviews have on BBQ restaurants Why Daniel fears one particular style of Texas BBQ may be at risk of becoming a thing of the past How to know the best time to hit that BBQ spot you’ve been dying to try What it was like working with Sam Jones on his book about whole hog BBQ I counted, and during our talk, Daniel and I reference about 24 different BBQ restaurants. Drafting a Special Needs Trust is only the foundation of sound planning. On that foundation are additional documents and steps to take. In this episode we discuss two. First, the memorandum of intent which gives direction on wishes and day to day care. This episode covers what to put in the memo of intent, ensuring it is easy to find, being bold yet discreet in wishes that others may not like, and why you should not store it in your safe at home. The second consideration discussed is the importance of funding the trust via retitling to avoid probate. “The fraud of men was ever so / Since summer first was leafy” — Balthasar’s song, Much Ado About Nothing In episode six, we look at that vexing question of whether or not Will Shakespeare was a complete and utter conman. We’ll follow those who dug up rivers, cracked codes, turned to grave-robbing, or occasionally just wrote really, really long books to find the answer. We’ll hear from Mark Twain, Sigmund Freud, William Wordsworth, and learn some surprising theories as to why Queen Elizabeth I was the Virgin Queen (or was she…?). It’s a journey from the 1560s to our era and back again, and somehow I manage to bring up Golden Girls, England’s greatest treasure hunt, George W. Bush and Dame Agatha Christie! Confused? You still will be after listening, but I hope you’ll enjoy this incredibly long investigation of the madness that is the authorship question. Merlin Holland, Will Self and Fiona Shaw join Matthew Sweet for a discussion about Oscar Wilde's novel which was published in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in the July 1890 issue and then as a book 121 years ago in 1891. It prompted discussions about censorship and hedonism and went on to play a considerable part in the writer's downfall. Endlessly filmed, The Picture of Dorian Gray seems to communicate directly to successive generations - but how much about its writer can it really tell us. Merlin Holland, Oscar Wilde's grandson, has adapted it for a new stage version which runs at The Trafalgar Studios in London from January 18th to February 13th. Will Self's novel Dorian: An Imitation updated the story to the late 20th century. Fiona Shaw played Agatha in the 2009 film version, Dorian Gray. Producer: Jacqueline Smith

Mark Lefebvre, Kobo Writing Life Director, in conversation with Dean Wesley Smith, a USA Today Bestselling author of books in multiple genres including Science-Fiction, Mystery, Thrillers and Westerns. Currently producing novels in four different series, Smith is also the co-publisher of WMG Publishing along with his partner Kristine Kathryn Rusch and runs a series of workshops designed to help writers become smarter not only about the craft but also about the business of publishing. During their conversation, Dean and Mark talk about: · The fact that Dean wasn't born into writing, actually loathed it when he was in college (He has a Masters in Architecture) · The various careers and roles that Smith played during his life, including his past as a Pro Golfer and hot dog skier · How his goal of being a Golf Course Architect led to writing via an English course that he had to take. · The English Professor who told Smith that his writing was too commercial · The writing class that forced Smith to submit a poem to a college poetry market (at which he won second place and $300) – at the time, he had to go see the professor to ask about it because he had no idea what it meant · After this experience, Smith tried his hand at fiction, wrote a 1000 word short story and mailed it off to a market right away. Then he wrote a second story and mailed that off right away. Both stories sold immediately. · How, after these first three successes, Smith started listening to people's advice (AKA myths) about writing, and re-wrote his stories to dead, and for the next 7 years never sold a single thing · It wasn't until 1982 that Smith ran across Robert Heinlein's Business Rules of Writing, followed the advice, started selling again and has never looked back (http://www.deanwesleysmith.com/heinleins-business-rules/) The RULES o 1 – You Must Write o 2 – You Must Finish What You Start o 3 – You Must Refrain From Rewriting Except to Editorial Order o 4 – You Must Put It on The Market o 5 – You Must Keep It on The Market Until Sold · Dean's books: Killing the Top Ten Sacred Cows of Publishing and Killing the Top Ten Sacred Cows of Indie Publishing. · The magazine that Dean and Kristine Kathryn Rusch ran for 9 years, called Pulphouse. · The Starfleet Corps of Engineers Series that Dean kicked off in the Star Trek Universe – a series about the people who follow up after Captain Kirk, cleaning up his messes (which was originally meant to be an eBook back in 2000 and knocked John Grisham off the eBook bestseller list when it was released) · The challenge of writing within an existing restrictive universe, such as Star Trek, such as the reader having to hear Shatner's voice when writing the character Captain Kirk. · Smith's lesson for writers creating character voice by paying really close attention to the differences in voice you can easily see created for the Star Trek characters of Kirk, Spock and McCoy · Regency Romance as one of the only genres that Smith really can't write in · How Westerns, (the old West) and Science-Fiction are two of Smith's go-two genres for writing. · The FICTION RIVER anthology series that Smith edits with Kristine Kathryn Rusch and how this river of fiction brings in new talent along with some major names from the genre. (For example, the latest FICTION RIVER property, Pulse Pounders, edited by Kevin J. Anderson, included a previously unpublished sci-fi story by Frank Herbert) · The Oregon Coast workshops where the FICTION RIVER anthologies are derived that include a board of 6 Editors critiquing the stories live on stage and how that helps inform writers that what one editor rejects another editor might have bought · How the workshops that Dean and Kris started originated as the “Denise Little” short story workshops; because of the similarity to the way that editor/agent Denise Little liked to teach these principles · A bit about Smith's Monthly Magazine, which has both a paper and an eBook edition · How Smith sees the approximate 80,000 words that he writes each month as still “not enough” · Smith's ongoing Blog in which he shares daily insights: Writing in Public · How the teaching that Smith does is part of his desire to try to give back or pay forward to the industry in the way that the industry and writers before Smith have given so much to him · One of the biggest myths from indie publishing, regarding indie writers not being able to get their indie published books into bookstores and the “fairy dust” that has long been spread regarding that · How Smith isn't anti-traditional but is 100% pro smart-writer Other Links Dean Wesley Smith's Books at Kobo WMG Publishing Workshops WMG Publishing Lectures Fiction River Anthologies (website) Fiction River Anthologies (Kobo)

In 1903, Mark Twain published the short story “A Dog’s Tale” in Harper’s Monthly Magazine, and the following year, it was released it as a book. Though it tends to be overshadowed by his more famous works, the story received public and critical acclaim, and as Diane Beers writes in her book, For the Prevention of Cruelty,it “is to this day a persuasive literary weapon for animal advocacy.” And I agree with her when she writes, “Twain’s deceptively simple little tale gave a powerful voice to the voiceless and laid bare human cruelty and arrogance.” A lovely sad tale worthy of remembrance.
