Intro: Welcome to another Episode of the Be Bold Podcast. We are reading from 1 Samuel 2: 12-26. This one is a doozy for me as It brought to my mind the need to do better as a parent, who is also the priest of my house. I was reminded that just because I have my salvation, does not mean that my children have a relationship with Christ. I literally had to reflect on what I am doing as a father, as a mentor, as the example of a godly man in my house. I am not doing what I could be doing. I need to do better and I pray this encourages you to grow as well in being an example of a follower of Christ to your children.  Join me on Tuesday Nights @ 945 pm and Thursday Mornings on YouTube and Twitch. Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Natalia Koss Vallejo is an activist and feminist. And although she’s motivated by her anger, you wouldn’t know it from her demeanor. She’s a diminutive woman with a lion’s roar about the issues she cares about. And she isn’t shy at all about jumping right into sensitive topics. Topics that generally aren’t talked about publicly. In this episode, we talk about how Natalia got involved with politics at a very early age. That involvement, which you’ll hear about, rose out of her difficultly in obtaining an abortion in her late teens. It was at this time that she recognized an unjust and unfair system that affected not only her, but the many women out there in similar situations. This is what I find so amazing and so bold about her. That she was so mature at such a young age to not only recognize this but to also be so motivated to make changes to the system. Her frustration with this experience launched her into work at Planned Parenthood, NARAL and, ultimately, politics. Although this is a topic she passionately talks about, that’s not what actually brought us together. The way Natalia landed on my radar was because of a sexual harassment and workplace misconduct suit (filed by a third party but on behalf of Natalia) against her boss, Bailey Stober. He was, at the time, Chair of the King County Democrats in Washington State. You’ll hear how this all unfolded but, in short, the complaint, again, filed by a third party, resulted in an internal trial against Stober and caused him to not only lose his position as the Chair of the King Country Democrats but also his full-time job at the King County Assessor’s office. This is a guy who said deplorable things to Natalia. Things that shouldn’t be said out loud in the first place let alone by an employer to his employee. (And, again, fair warning that those words are spoken out loud in our conversation so brace yourself.) Natalia and I had been trying to get together for months for this conversation but it took on new urgency after the Senate confirmed Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. After Christine Blasey Ford bravely came forward (and was basically shut down), I felt it was really important for people to hear Natalia’s story. But you have to understand that on one hand Natalia’s story is a win for women in the workplace but you still have to wonder why this is still tolerated in the workplace and why more women don’t come forward in these situations. I’m so glad Natalia also felt it important to get her story out on the Be Bold Podcast and that she made time to sit down with me just a couple of days before I left for Peru. So with that, please enjoy this conversation with Natalia Koss Vallejo. Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Today’s conversation is with Radha Agrawal. Radha is…well, Radha is a pretty freaking amazing young woman. She’s probably best known for having founded Daybreaker, an early morning dance party that’s currently in 25 cities and has a half a million people in the community. Basically, about once a month Daybreaker takes place in each of these 25 cities. These consist of a one-hour yoga session, if you so choose, that’s followed by two hours of dance. All this takes place early enough in the morning that you can participate and then go to work. Think of it like a very scaled down, early morning version of Burning Man where 300 – 600 people get jiggy with it. Where there might be a theme, people might come in costume and basically they’re just completely letting loose before they head to their jobs. I suggest that while you’re listening to this episode, maybe you can just pop over to the Daybreaker website and see if the city nearest you is on their list. And if, not there’s probably a way you can contact them and request (or even start one yourself) for the city nearest you. Anyway, what grew out of Daybreaker is Radha’s new book, Belong: Find Your People, Create Community, and Live a More Connected Life. That kinda says it all. As you’ll hear in our conversation today, she said she was getting asked a few times a week how she was able to build her Daybreaker community, so she wrote the book in response to this question that kept coming up. But she didn’t just write a book, in my opinion, she created a piece of beautiful art. Seriously, it’s one of, if not THE most beautifully designed books I’ve every come across. And it was her handiwork as you’ll hear in this conversation. She’s the one that actually designed it. Even though we call ourselves connected (and by that I mean through technology), we have become a very disconnected culture and world. With Daybreaker, Radha has addressed this current epidemic of us being so disconnected from one another. What’s she done is not only built a community but, through Belong (her book) she’s created a road map for us all to build our own communities. As you hear on all the conversations here on the Be Bold Podcast, there’s much more to a person’s story than what they are currently working on. With Radha, you’ll hear in our conversation about her life story that takes her from Canada, to school in upstate NY to work in the finance world in the Big Apple to “travel” documentaries to vegetables to underwear and, finally, to community building. With that, enjoy this conversation with Radha Agrawal! ____ By the way...I’d love to hear your feedback! Send me a note at beth@beboldpodcast.com and let me know what you think. Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Megan Biging is an ocean rower. This was (and kinda still is) so far out of my realm of knowledge that I couldn’t even conceive of what ocean rowing is. Megan, along with her rowing partner, Vicki Otmani, rowed (I mean r-o-w-e-d) across the Pacific Ocean, from Monterey, California to Honolulu, Hawaii. They spent 57 days on the water before crossing the finish line. And in doing so, they set a World Record and that was for a female pair in a Classic rowing boat having navigated that passage. Yeah. Pretty crazy. Though there are some people who have rowed the oceans on their own, meaning they are not part of an event or race, Megan and Vicki rowed as part of the Great Pacific Race. They raced in 2016 against 7 other teams, so there were either teams that included two and four members, and only six teams ultimately finished that year, Megan and Vicki being two of them. Can you imagine? I could not. Be sure to check out the show notes on the Be Bold Podcast website to see a photo of the boat. If you don’t know what an ocean rowboat looks like, it’ll blow your mind. Then, when you hear her story, it’ll blow your mind further to think that they rowed their way for 2,400+ miles over two months through hurricanes in that boat. I still can’t fathom it. Megan and I had quite a lengthy conversation, mostly because I had so many questions about logistics and trying to understand the how and why and what that led her to making the decision to spend 11 months preparing for it and then two months on the water. And then what it was like to come home after what was truly a grand adventure. Even if you’re like me and have no idea what ocean rowing is about, I know you’ll really enjoy this conversation. Because ultimately, it’s about a person who had an idea that she could do something—and even she admits this was not her “dream.” But she warmed up to the idea after seeing how excited her friend was about it. And even though on paper it looked like a ridiculous idea, she couldn’t help but follow her gut that this was an opportunity that she could not miss. She does not have any regrets but as you’ll hear, returning home was a bit of a let down. Of course, you can’t do something epic like that and then not feel a bit disappointed or depressed when you return home. It happens to me after every great trip I take! Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Today's guest is Samantha Brown. Samantha is a TV host and travel expert who spent more than 10 years with the Travel Channel hosting shows such as Greatest Hotels, Girl Meets Hawaii, Passport to Europe, Passport to Latin America, Green Getaways, Passport to China, Great Weekends and Samantha Brown’s Asia. She’s visited over 250 cities in 62 countries and 40 in the United States. What you’ll learn about Samantha is that she has an endlessly curious mind and a genuine interest in the locals wherever she finds herself. As you’ll hear in our conversation, she loved the work that she did with the Travel Channel and the encounters she had during filming but often the most meaningful experiences (for her) got left out of the final version of those shows. When she left the Travel Channel, she decided (quite boldly, I might add) she would follow her passion and put her talents and interests to work by creating a series that features those encounters that she enjoyed most. The ones that got left out of the shows airing on the Travel Channel. That’s where Samantha Brown’s Places to Love comes in, her new series on PBS. Samantha and I met up at the San Diego Travel and Adventure Show where we both spoke at the event. During our conversation, we talked about her new series and how and why it came about but we also veered into other topics including the practicalities of her travels now that she’s married with children. We also talked about how, as someone who really loves her alone time, she has a secret weapon to recharge. And that’s particularly important for someone who has so many demands on her during filming. Throughout our conversation you’ll hear her wonderfully poignant stories that helped shape who she is as a person and traveler. You’ll also hear answers to questions from Be Bold Podcast listeners. And I can say, yes, she is as chipper in person and during our conversation as she appears to be on television and during her speaking gigs.
