If you remember the #butnotmaternity campaign during the Covid-19 pandemic you'll recall that women were sometimes left to give birth without their partners. Those restrictions for maternity care were left in place far too long affecting the mental health of mothers and staff. That's according to evidence given to the Covid-19 inquiry which this week is looking at the subject in detail. The inquiry has been listening to the impact on women from 13 pregnancy, baby and parent organisations. We hear from our correspondent who has been following it, Jim Reid, and from Jenny Ward, the CEO of the Lullaby Trust, who gave evidence on behalf of all the organisations. And we talk to Daisie Lane who tells us of her own experience and her book chronicling 150 other women's experiences.Bestselling author Sophie Kinsella, known for the hugely popular Shopaholic series and many other bestsellers, has sold over 45 million books which have been translated into more than 40 languages. Her latest novel, What Does It Feel Like?, is her most autobiographical yet. It tells the story of a novelist who wakes up in a hospital bed with no memory of how she got there and learns she's had surgery to remove a large tumour growing in her brain. She must re-learn how to walk, talk, and write again. Six months ago, Sophie shared with her readers on social media that in 2022, she had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, a type of aggressive brain cancer. It's known for its poor prognosis with only 25% of people surviving more than one year, and only 5% survive more than five years.A murder investigation has been launched after the body of a 22-year-old woman was found in south Belfast. Mary Ward is the fourth woman to be murdered in the space of six weeks in Northern Ireland. The Police Service of Northern Ireland - or PSNI - have referred the case to the office of the Police Ombudsman. Earlier this year, the PSNI released figures showing that in the five years between 2019 and 2024, 30 women and girls across Northern Ireland were killed by men. To put that into context, the population of Northern Ireland is around 1.9 million. We hear from Alison Morris - the Crime Reporter for the Belfast Telegraph.Woman's Hour is joined by the winner of the BBC Green Sport Award, the rower Imogen Grant. Campaigning for cleaner rivers, being vegan and buying fewer clothes are all things Imogen does to protect the environment. She also talks about winning gold at Paris 2024.Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Kirsty Starkey

This week on @Monday_mile_series I'm taking a stroll through Henley on Thames with a lady who knows these waters very well…@erinmwj, a Paralympic rowing gold medallist and breast cancer survivor. At 29 Erin was diagnosed with breast cancer, which has led to her now being an advocate for early detection and diagnosis. That diagnosis didn't hold her back though as she competed in the Rowing World Cup, winning gold just four days after her diagnosis and then going on to win the 2022 European Championships whilst on chemo – what a superhuman! In this down to earth chat we delve into what it takes to be a coxswain, how she learnt to find the boundary between friend and leader with her fellow rowers and how this helped them to win gold. We take a deep dive into her cancer diagnosis, how she tackled the news with a resilient and incredibly positive attitude that carried her through the rest of her treatment. His determination and spirit led him to embrace this new challenge, ultimately earning a spot on the Canadian 2024 Paralympic Rowing Team. New Zealand's had its best day yet at the Paris Olympics with our rowers taking home three medals. The women's coxless four winning bronze, the men's coxless four winning silver, and, in the double sculls, Brooke Francis and Lucy Spoors taking home the gold. Francis told Mike Hosking she's only taken her gold medal off once to shower, describing it as a good-looking medal emblazoned with a picture of the Eiffel Tower. Our newest gold medallists are also hoping to blaze a trail for other mothers to follow. Both women have been balancing motherhood and rowing since having children in 2022. Francis says they both believed in themselves, and they want other mothers to pursue great careers while also being great mothers. New Zealand has now won five medals at the Games: one bronze, two silver, and two gold. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode we mark the beginning of the Paris Olympics by looking at the story of Frederick Kelly. Frederick, known as Cleg, was an Olympic gold medal winner at the 1908 London Olympics. He then became a composer before joining the Royal Naval Division at the beginning of the Great War. Find out how he became friends with poet Rupert Brooke and how he was killed in action during the Battle of the Ancre in November 1916. We look at this battle in detail, following Cleg's story, and through the eyes of the soldiers who were there.

It was a tough decision and even tougher training process; at times he was bored, at times he wanted to give up. di Santo used anxiety and anger as powerful motivators to drive his performance as an Olympic rower. The word “amateur” differentiated men who were paid to row or steer the boat and gentlemen who rowed for pleasure. The Committee allowed those from the gentlemen amateur group to participate in the annual regatta in the men's single scull. On September 25, 1886, the first regatta took place. Until 1912 the regatta was known as the International Dutch Open Single Sculling Championships. The regatta maintained wide international renown. In 1931 the regatta was moved from the river Amstel to the temporary race course in Sloten, near Amsterdam, until it found its present site at the brand new Bosbaan in 1937. During the eighties, the Holland Beker experienced competition from a growing number of international regattas, which made it difficult to attract the top international rowers. After some German victories, several Dutch victories were celebrated in the late eighties and early nineties. There is a gap in the regatta's history in the years 2001 and 2002. Only after the refurbishment of the Bosbaan race course in 2003 did the Holland Beker Regatta Association start anew. The organisation now includes the Royal Maas Yacht Club Rotterdam – replacing the Royal Netherlands Yacht Club as the organising group in 1994-, the Amsterdam Student Rowing Club Skøll and the Royal Dutch Rowing Association. In 2004 the name of the regatta changed back to the Koninklijke Holland Beker. As Holland's most renowned international regatta, the Koninklijke Holland Beker has hosted the World Rowing Cup III in 2019. Top rowers from countries around the world have travelled to Rotterdam to compete, which made the event a great success.
