Janet Michael kicked off the conversation with Captain Warren Gosnell from the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. The discussion centered around the Apple Blossom Festival, a beloved local tradition. Goz shared his thoughts on the month-long social media initiative, where he posts daily tidbits to celebrate May. Conversations touched on everything from his daughter's birthday to iconic events like Star Wars Day and Cinco de Mayo. Moving on to the festival itself, Goz detailed the highly anticipated apple pie baking contest. With 20 entries and three judges, it's an event that brings the community together. The conversation also delved into public perceptions of the Apple Blossom Festival. Goz emphasized patience and respect for neighborhood inconveniences, acknowledging the dedication of local volunteers who make the event possible. Janet chimed in with personal experiences, highlighting the sense of community fostered during the festival. Safety tips were another crucial aspect discussed. Goz advised locals to plan ahead, exercise patience, and always be mindful of their surroundings. Whether it's managing traffic or staying alert in crowded areas, these tips aimed to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Janet and Goz's banter brought a blend of nostalgia and practicality to the discussion. From reminiscing about high school football coaches to engaging with Apple Blossom queens, their stories showcased the festival's deep-rooted significance in the community. As the session concluded, Goz reminded everyone to respect community spaces, be considerate of others, and most importantly, prepare for a weekend of fun and festivity.

In this episode of The Valley Today - Public Safety Thursday - host Janet Michael sat down with Captain Warren Gosnell of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office to discuss public safety, impaired driving, and the multifaceted responsibilities of local law enforcement. The pre-recorded session offered listeners a unique glimpse into both the operational and emotional aspects of law enforcement. Captain Gosnell, or ‘Goz,' is renowned for his dedication to public safety, particularly in the realm of impaired driving enforcement. The discussion opened with an overview of Goz's participation in an advanced DUI and DUID (Driving Under the Influence of Drugs) class in Williamsburg, where he educates law enforcement officers and prosecutors on the complexities of impaired driving cases. “It's not just about the investigation; it's about ensuring these cases are successfully prosecuted,” Goz emphasized. The conversation took on a poignant note as Goz shared his personal connection to the issue, having grown up with an alcoholic father. He fervently argued that impaired drivers deserve a chance to overcome their addictions, yet underscored the devastating impact of impaired driving on innocent victims. “What if it's not the impaired person who perished in the crash?” he asked solemnly. Janet and Goz explored the perceptions surrounding impaired driving incidents, discussing the misconception that impaired drivers often walk away unscathed from accidents. Goz debunked this myth, explaining the psychological bias that leads people to remember these instances more vividly. Beyond impaired driving, Goz delved into the comprehensive structure of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, revealing an intricate web of divisions, including Criminal Investigations, Civil Process, School Safety, Administrative, and Special Operations. Each division plays a pivotal role in maintaining public safety, from serving eviction notices to running SWAT and search-and-rescue operations. Janet highlighted the community's frequent interactions with law enforcement, often through traffic stops or emergency calls. Goz addressed the perception of law enforcement, stressing the importance of understanding the broader scope of their duties and responsibilities. Special attention was given to the importance of teamwork between law enforcement and prosecutors. Goz detailed how officers must gather evidence meticulously to aid in the successful prosecution of cases, likening it to a well-coordinated effort between waitstaff and chefs in a restaurant. As the conversation drew to a close, Janet and Goz touched on the everyday challenges and triumphs faced by law enforcement officers. Goz reflected on his career with a mix of humility and pride, reaffirming his commitment to public safety and the continuous fight against impaired driving. In an era where public perception of law enforcement can be polarized, this dialogue served as a heartfelt reminder of the dedication and humanity of those tasked with keeping our communities safe. Janet and Goz's candid conversation offered a rare, thoughtful perspective that resonated deeply with listeners.

Hello and welcome to the Valley Today podcast listeners! I have some good news and bad news for you about today's conversation for Public Safety Thursday with Captain Warren Gosnell from the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. As is the custom in my house, we always start with the bad news first so the good news can make us feel better. So … the bad news: There was a technical glitch in recording the show today. We were live in the studio which means I have a bit less control over the audio and recording mechanisms since I'm not using my own equipment. It appears the first segment of today's conversation where we talked about Captain Gosnell's promotion and his new, expanded duties did not record. But the good news is that the second half of our conversation DID record so it wasn't a total loss from a podcast perspective. My apologies for the glitch but enjoy the last 15 minutes of my chat today with Goz! Janet and Goz discuss the dangers, misconceptions, and legal implications of brake checking, emphasizing it is never a good idea. They then touch on topics such as the role of passengers in traffic incidents and broader public safety concerns, including handling emergencies and the use of defibrillators. Goz shares personal experiences with lifesaving CPR and highlights the Good Samaritan laws. They also address how the show's content will evolve to include more public safety topics. The episode concludes with Goz discussing his recent promotion and offering a few light-hearted moments with Janet about their personal lives and interactions with listeners.
